I'm surprised "Contest Winner's Tabard" never makes these lists. Considering only one person from each faction per server ever got one I don't even know how many years ago. It was my most prized possession
Because people don't know it exists. The rarest "mainstream" items people actually take into account are the oldschool unarmored epic mounts, of which there are still about 1000 remaining in active accounts - I estimate the maximum amount of Contest Winner's Tabards in existence at the time of them being handed out was around 350 (2 factions per realm with around 175 servers world wide), and I would think the ones remaining will absolutely be less than 50. Probably less. I've played since launch and have never stopped playing and the only one I have ever seen in game is my brother's, who also still plays. And that's coming from someone who knows what to look for, your average player won't look for a tabard, let alone know or understand what they're looking at even if they did happen to see one.
Went and did some thorough research after commenting out of curiosity and I have found the exact amount of winners on wayback machines - the total is 292. 194 on US realms, 98 on EU realms, so 97 US realms and 47 EU ones, 144 total, a little shy of my 175 estimate. I have also found a Reddit thread stating TWELVE US accounts currently active own this tabard in their collection from SIX YEARS ago, meaning my initial estimate of 50 (or less) was definitely generous, and is likely closer to 20 at best. Pretty insane considering the aforementioned amount of 1000 total Oldschool Ride owners in the world with a currently active account.
I finally got Invincible a few years ago. I also have the haunted memento - which has been on my main since I got it way back in the pre-expansion event..
I have been farming the Invincible for years. One day i decided to bring out my friend in ICC aswell, just to clear it together. Since doing it with someone else is less boring. Without thinking that the mount actually would drop....We got at the lich king, Killed it. And BAM, the mount. You know what my ''friend'' said, ''WE ROLL FOR IT.'' I was not having it actually but changed my mind when she started her roll. She rolled a 6. I was like, GREAT. How small is the change i dont win it now. Lmfaooo i was sooo wrong. I rolled a motherfking 3 and she rolled out with the mount after her first run. Fk that shit.
I had the Haunted Memento from the Wrath prelaunch event, but lost it by forgetting it in the mail as I bounced stuff back and forth between characters when I was almost completely out of bag/bank space. I forgot it on a character and by the time I remembered, it was too late to recover it from the auto-deleted mail. The Memento got nerfed several times. It was problematic because the specter it spawned could and would frequently get stuck in one spot, and when the holder zoned it would spawn another, which could also get stuck. So as the holder moved around they could spawn practically unlimited specters that could get stuck and they stayed until server rest. Times this by the tens of thousands of players on each server and that single item and its spawnable mob started dragging the servers down, giving major performance issues. They changed it so it would only spawn a max of one specter per so many minutes. They could still get stuck but it as long as it was on its internal cooldown, it wouldn't keep spawning them. It was still problematic so they nerfed it again and again, until today the item itself does literally nothing any more. But they put a toy in the game that replicates the effect (and of course with a cooldown.)
The item still spawns specters today. I see it all the time on my paladin. The specter pops up and it triggers a cower animation. I've never paid attention to how often it happens, but I see it at least a few times a day I'd guess.
I deleted mine, and didn’t know why I was being attacked randomly by undead for years afterwards when I discovered that it was due to the Haunted Memento!
Actually they added the Thistle tea recipe into the game, and you can buy it now from either the rogue headquarters in Stormwind or the rogue class hall in Legion
I only played in 2004-2007 and quit the day before the first expansion came out. The Talisman of Binding Shard only dropped once in history, it was on my server (Archimonde). That is presumably the rarest item of all time.
No Talisman of the Binding Shard at #1? Legendary necklace in vanilla was accidentally added to the loot table of Baron Geddon. After it dropped for the first time, it was immediately hotfixed and it was taken off the loot table. So 1 drop and 1 drop only in the entire history of the game. It's unclear if it was a GM item, or a working model of what became the Bindings of the Windseeker quest drops.
I still have some quest items on my account from before cataclysm, like the pre NERF version of Dartols Rod of Transformation which iirc had no cooldown.

I used to have a Chromatic sword. Not for long tho. I was levelling a prot pally on a low pop server, encountered Scalebelly randomly, killed it, looted the sword and then promptly sold it to the vendor because I was using a one-handed plus a shield.
4:59 i remember still that time when i got that mount, i farmed it a way that i cleared raid expect Lich king, created private raid party, logged out, went another character, asked to join in that party, went to my main to accept that request, then back to other character, i went inside a raid, leaved that party and because Lich king was only boss left, i could just teleport to his Chamber and kill Lich king and because my main did not clear raid it was easy way to farm mount and then just repeat this with every character what i had. Eventually i got my mount. Ofc i have not played about 5+ years anymore. I dont think i anymore even have my wow characters because i have not been that active to log in my battle net account to keep it active so my wow profile would not get deleted.

Do you think the Xerothian Firestick should be on a list like this? It's from the warlock mount quest. The appearance is unique and only a warlock with the ability to summon the boss in dire maul could get it for you.
While not an item, but the hunter pet that was a summoned pet from Dustwallow Marsh pre-WotLK revamp the zone got that had a look like Karoma (Spirit Beast tameable), but was an regular wolf. You needed a certain amount of haste, a trinket to use with haste plus Bloodlust and luck because you needed to get Tame Pet below the time the mob despawned which was like 8 seconds. It was only available for a little while due to needing quite a bit of haste and it was not very widely gotten. you left off Pet Rock, which was available only by pickpocketing a certain furbolg mob in azshara before the cata redesign of the zone. no longer in game.
Haunted Momento was a Grey item which meant you could've easily vendored it by accident... Adding more to their rarity. I think in Pandaria then made it White to prevent that. I know, because I've carried one since Wrath-Prepatch.
the love rocket was given from the resurrection scroll awhile back from inv 10 or 20 friends to play wow ur at least try it out. i never heard about the event thing
I got pendulum of doom 2x in real vanilla for my 39 twinks. What is funny is in 2019 when the game came out again, I was pissed that I could not find it again. Now I understand how lucky I was. To think about it now. Seal of Command procs in 2004 on my lvl 39 paladin twink sealed my fate as a paladin main forever.
You totally forgot the legendary Talisman of Binding Shard!! It dropped in MC Vanille only 1 Time. After that Blizzard took it out of the game but the player was allowed to keep it
1:05 that's not how drop chances work. If it's 1:3,333, 3,333 attempts is still not "confirmed", it could legitimately never drop for a person or even an account. In Pokemon Shining Pearl I failed a 30% chance to fish a Fineon... 25 times in a row, getting it on my 26th fish (also one of the 25 magikarps was a full odds shiney). An X:Y is always an X:Y. It's just Z instances of X:Y. Unless there is a pity, but I doubt there's a pity system in wow drops.
Huh. I guess my paladin has had one of the rarest items in the game in her inventory for the last fifteen years. Who knew? That haunted memento has been sitting in my final bag with all the other odds and ends for years. The ghost occasionally pops up and triggers a cower animation.
when we get under the 0.whatever range of Lootchance -> tbh i don't have the time for this nowadays xD the rarest i ever got was being the Lucky One to get Mimiron's Head out of 25 Players in Ulduar back in the Days xD
Meanwhile in Lineage 2 - this one of strongest monsters of that particular level has 0.002% to drop this item. No worries - it either requires whole party or full buffed character :). Oh and if you would craft it, hunting materials etc is pain and lower monsters dropping it have 1/333333 chance to drop it ... oh and they can drop 4 other items with same chance so virtually chance is 4 times lower from every mob. And RB dropping it has only 2.5% chance but as rb requires a lot of preperation (unless server is modified for way easier gameplays).
@Epic Gamer - Just a fun story i want to share. Back in the Pandaria era there was an incident in the Goldrinn realm where a Gnome named Thenagi became a Legend for acquiring the Invincible from a toxic Streamer that was live streaming. At the start of all organized Raids its common for the Raid leader to determine if a specific item that drops will be theirs or not. The Streamer named Johnny in no moment said anything that any item should they drop would be reserved to him. They finally arrived at the Lich King him self and killed him, the Invincible dropped and he started screaming on the stream saying it was his tho he never said anything before and didnt put lootmaster options so everyone rolled. Thenagi rolled a 100 and got the mount, Johnny started swearing and insulting Thenagi who trained the mount. You can find some videos of the incident on RUclips if you want to check it out and have a laugh. xD

Haunted Momento was a Grey item which meant you could've easily vendored it by accident... Adding more to their rarity. I think in Pandaria then made it White to prevent that. I know, because I've carried one since Wrath-Prepatch.
What about the Black Qiraji Battle Tank?
I have NEVER seen hammer of vigilance drop from ToS
the love rocket was given from the resurrection scroll awhile back from inv 10 or 20 friends to play wow ur at least try it out. i never heard about the event thing
I have Hailstorm....didnt think it was rare.
Also have a Haunted Memento.
As well as my hunter has a tamed grimtotem spirit guide.
After that Blizzard took it out of the game but the player was allowed to keep it
There is a unique variation of the mecha strider mount given out to a single player by accident as well, which is unobtainable by any other means
I actually had the Haunted Momento and Invincible on my Paladin! And my Rogue had the Thistle Tea recipe!
Slowed that down at 3:29 and still couldn't hear the m in game world. 🤔
Its cool to know I have one of these (Haunted Memento) its a reminder to myself of better times in WoW, and of my childhood
1. Big Love Rocket.
2. Haunted Memento.
3. Pendulum of Doom.
4. Chromatic Sword.
5. Invincible.
6. Thisle Tea.
7. Spellshock Leggings.
Honestly I might actually have one of those swiftistle tea recipes lying around on one of my old childhood characters.
I go the Big Love Rocket this year. Could not believe my luck!
Huh. I guess my paladin has had one of the rarest items in the game in her inventory for the last fifteen years. Who knew? That haunted memento has been sitting in my final bag with all the other odds and ends for years. The ghost occasionally pops up and triggers a cower animation.
I have a curious item I have held on to since vanilla: A warlock Firestone. It doesn't do anything any more but it's still there lol.
I feel like this was a missed opportunity to mention precious lucky ribbon
When icc was relevant invincible was 100% drop but was lowered after cata dropped
On my 1st character I got a disgusting oozing and caught the turtle mount. I did not know either of them even existed. 😂😂😂
spellshock leggings are selling for 800g on my server. i had the mog didn't even know it.
Thistle Tea is easy as pie to get now; it was added to the Rogue Order Hall in Legion.
I got the haunted memento, honestly I thought it was from argent dawn event!
when we get under the 0.whatever range of Lootchance -> tbh i don't have the time for this nowadays xD
the rarest i ever got was being the Lucky One to get Mimiron's Head out of 25 Players in Ulduar back in the Days xD
Wow I feel like an OG rogue that is able to make thistle tea. Let’s see how much it will sell for on the AH in Cata
The rarest of all time is of course > The sword of a thousand truths.
I knew spellshock leggings would be here. I saw plenty of PoDs on twinks in Classic, I saw one pair of spellshocks all classic
Tailisman of the Binding Shard ... only ever dropped once
Yeah that's it.. just commented about that lol Had forgotten the name
Invincible? Rare? It only took me 10 years and hundreds of runs to get it... Such an amateurish feat.
I got the chromatic sword drop from the uber bugs at the aq opening event 😃
You can find some videos of the incident on RUclips if you want to check it out and have a laugh. xD
