I have this tent. I backpacked with my wife in the sierras during the spring and I was carrying tent, communal items and food, and my own gear . The *killer features* that made this a favorite: 1) I can setup and take down the tent solo without backaches, and 2) the wife was warm and slept well in mid to late 20 degree weather.

Hi Tom another cracking and typically detailed review! I’m a big fan of this tent and nearly bought it myself, so great to hear you are enjoying it. The 220cm inner length did make me think it was was tight for me height wise. But as Hilleberg recommends, pitching vestibule into wind should solve any issues of the rear sloping wall pushing the outer onto inner and in turn, causing this to touch your sleeping bag. Took me a while to get my head around this with my Jannu and I actually reached out to Hilleberg who confirmed it to be correct, as it goes against 99% of conventional wisdom of pitching rear into wind! The steeper angle for the vestibule really does enhance the usable space. Also love the simplicity of pitching it offers with just 2 pole sleeves. Health to enjoy! Cheers Gary

I like pitching the "front" of a tent into the wind anyway because the bugs tend to gather down in the lee of the foot end, so not a lot of issues with bugs entering when getting in and out of the head end. But, I'm 5"10" and I use it solo so the interior dimension is fine, especially if I sleep with a diagonal orientation.
I am a tall user ( 1.92m ) and went with the Nammatj 3. It’s only 200gr more, but is 105cm inner tent height as to 95cm with Nammatj 2. It’s perfect for me and my 25kg dog ( Springer Spaniel ). I can lie slightly diagonal in the tent and not touching the inner tent at all. Most likely also due to the 10cm extra height the sloping at foot end is less pronounced as with Nammatj 2. I looked at the Keron, but Hilleberg stopped making the Keron 2 and the Keron 3 is just way too heavy ( over 4kg ) and taking too much space in the backpack. Then the Kaitum 2 could have been an alternative, but as with all their Red label tents, the vents have no mesh layer! Its either closed or fully open. Not nice in Summer with a million mosquitos and flies or in winter during snow+wind. So if you are tall as me, look into Nammatj 3. The weight difference and packsize compared to Nammatj 2 is neglible.
Hey thank you for this comment.. Great advice... I use my tents alone so would never have thought about the Nammatj 3.. Absolutely agree as 200g is such a little difference in weight and makes a big practical difference in reality due to the extra pole hight as you say altering the rear sloping angle.. Would be tempted myself... I honestly was not aware of the weight difference as never considered a 3 person tent... Once again thank you for sharing a great solution for taller users.... ATB Tom
@@TOMHEANEY100 Hehe. i myself also never considered it before, but found it in a Norwegian discussion group. The Nammatj 3 isn’t really a 3 person tent in my opinion, but see it more like a comfortable 2 person tent. I see it being nice for one tall person, as you also get an extra wide vestibule, so more space there too. Handy in winter time me thinks. But more importantly you can use any sleeping mat you like without worry it being too thick, wide or too long. 😉 When I go with my wife and son plus dog, we use the Helsport Spitsbergen Exteme 3 and that one is a true 3 person tent with its 180cm squared wide and two vertical walls.
Yep, I went with Nammatj 3 for solo use in the snow. Even though the vestibule is great I like to have my gear in the tent and free up the vestibule space for cooking etc. Once you dig in, it is quite a good amount of space. I love the GT but just cannot justify the extra weight and volume for one. 200g though from the Nammatj 2 to 3 was an easy decision. It is a bomber tent 👍
Hi Tom, I’ve been looking out for another review from you for ages, so it was great to see another film. As always, a fantastic production, and I thought the audio was super. This was a really detailed review, and made me think about a tent I’ve never really considered. I’m interested to hear that you’ve sold your BL Soulo, I did consider selling my Staika for one but glad I didn’t now. Interesting also to hear you say that BL tunnels are the strongest in the wind. Hi Phil, I hope that you are well.... Fab to hear that you enjoyed this video and really appreciate the positive feedback.. Here is the actual quote from Hilleberg.... " We purposely do not give any wind speed ratings for the tents. When you get a number indicating wind speed strength the tests are usually done by bolting the tent down in the floor and then turning the wind machine on and measuring the wind speed. It is not a very good way of measuring what really happens when you are actually using the tent outdoors since the wind can turn and also one of the first things that can happen in severe weather is that the pegs come out - or even worse that the tent cant be set up. The average working speed that we use is around 112 km/h but that is not necessarily the max speed - again, we do not give one specific number for it. For extreme wind we would recommend using a black label tunnel tent with extra guy lines and doubling the poles. Hope that helps! ATB Tom

Tom, Thank you for the information. I will drop by our local REI store later today ( Friday here) to try the Granite pack. I have always been a Gregory guy, but as I've gotten older (74) I'm looking at alternatives. Currently, I am planning a few overnight backpacks to test out a few new items I purchased. My backpacking buddy has been dealing with the death of his mom ( she was 102) and his wife who has had a series of nagging illnesses. We had a three-week trip planned for Wyoming's Wind River area, but due to her medical situation, the trip was postponed. Wyoming is a great place to hike, with spectacular mountains, all total it is one of our favorite places to visit. Together we have many trips into the "Winds." I bet not many tents could survive a night of consistent 40-60 mph winds...maybe 15 in the world. Even fewer can actually be SETUP by yourself in such conditions. You are absolutely right. Hilleberg designs are the real deal

Definitely the best in depth easy to understand and comprehensive review I have seen, just wish you had a nallo as that's the tent I have just purchased although is a similar tent so for strength and ventilation I think this review fits with the nallo. Enjoyed watching so thanks for that

Great to see you back Tom and reviewing tents. Since your last one I have purchased a Staika and very pleased with it. However, it was a close run thing between that and the Nammatj but the length at 6ft 4" swayed me to the Staika.
Hey thank you for your positive comments and just great that you have purchased the Staika as its a great tent... You would definitely have struggled in the Nammatj 2 for length. I hear from another comment that the Nammatj 3 is a great option for taller people. Its only 200g heavier than the 2 and being slightly higher makes the angle at the foot end a little steeper giving more usable length and if you can sleep slightly diagonally makes a difference too.... Great review! For me the Hilleberg Niak is my goto 3-season solo tent and I have an Keron 3 as my harsch weather/base tent. But as I live in Sweden more then often harsch equals to lots off snow and cold rather then wind. In the cold, space for bulky gear is gold even solo bringing a 3 ppl tent. I probably would get away fine with the Nammatj 2 solo but I cant really motivate cost for the 1Kg:isch saving. Also in the Keron length isn't a problem :) Nice color, all my Hillebergs are sand!

I camp on it so often as its not a killer of a walk to get to, has a water source saving me 1.5kg in weight and is nice and exposed so throws up plenty of wind on most occasions to make the camp interesting and usually keeps the midges away.. Great stuff Tom and does look an interesting tent. Have to say that I am going back away from lightweeight tents and looking at space and comfort. Actually looking at tents in the 2.7kg + range as I feel stronger fabrics and space is more important to me now than saving a 1kg or so. Atb and keep up the great videos.

Tent looks awesome! I opted for the Nallo 4 for me and my son. Load of space for 2 and red label is good enough for 99% of uK camping. Only 3kg between 2 people
Hi Looked at buying a Nallo on many occasions but opted for the Nammatj as I have already experienced 60mph winds here in Northern Ireland in August... I just thought I would prefer the strongest poles and fabrics.. Like you say though the Nallo is good for most of the conditions here in UK winter.. ATB and enjoy that tent... Tom

Hi Tom, you're my favourite reviewer on RUclips I think! I'm also a Hilleberg fanboy, having slept, owned or tested almost all of them now, any gaps I have are firmly located in the Yellow label as I'm too fond of durability and 4 season application to compromise strength. Having said that, I sell them as part of my job and have been on trips with Hilleberg so I feel relatively confident with them, though I'm always learning more. I agree with your points, Hilleberg has been very privelleged to have had the strength in its reputation/sales to resist any pressure to alter, adapt or re-design their products, they have enjoyed tweaking them as they see fit, due to incredible demand. The UK after sales market is very strong, this is not the case everywhere in Europe though. I also firmly believe 2 additional pockets are overdue and that a foot end alteration to maximise the length/height ratio would be warmly received, the two additional peg loops at the foot end do not contribute that much. I owned the Nammatj 2 and sold it after sleeping in it two nights, simply because of the foot end forcing me to sleep diagonally, although I am only 5"11. I will probably purchase it again though as I was naive to how genuinely impressive the Nammatj 2 is compared to the Soulo for example in terms of weight, space and durability. It would be very interesting to see your take on the Kaitum 2 and the Allak 2 by comparison, as I feel these two come equally close to perfection at a similar weight. Thanks for another great review!
Hi Green Panda, thank you so much for your positive comments as someone who has so much experience of Hilleberg tents.. I am always learning too... I caught the inner of my Nammatj recently in the zipper and had to carefully free it up.. Not only was the fabric not holed but not even a mark on it.. try that with a 20d fabric.... Great to hear that someone listens to my rant about the pockets and rear peg loops etc... and agrees of course ha ha... I know Hilleberg suggest extending the pull out points at the rear but this only pulls the inner and outer apart at the bottom and not the middle and up where the separation isn't good in moderate winds... As another commenter pointed out the Nammatj 3 is only 200g more and slightly taller resulting in a steeper angle at the foot of the tent giving more usable volume length. Sleep diagonally as you have done before and that could make a fair difference... ATB and thank you once again... Tom
@@TOMHEANEY100 No problem, you are welcome. You are bang on with the problem not being rectified with additional peg points, the tent sags further up. It isn't a fatal flaw but it is a limitation. I used the Nammatj 2 as a single person 4 season tent, and I don't much fancy carrying a 3 person tent (and additional weight/unnecessary space) to combat this. If you are willing to compromise a little bit on material strength and quite possibly require double poles earlier than a Nammatj would, a Kaitum 2 provides great space for approximately the same weight and you eliminate completely the issue with sloping walls
@@TOMHEANEY100 Despite being a big Hilleberg fan (I've 4 at present, had and sold others), I really enjoyed your comparison video between the Unna, Akto and Soulo, I respect and admire all of them but all them have such serious drawbacks that I always go back to their 2 person tent range and the Nammatj 2 really is one of the absolute best, ticks so many boxes. You're a tall fella so it would be interesting to see how you fare in the Allak 2, especially with 10mm poles for exposed camps. Could be a match made in heaven, if you are willing to eat the cost (Allak 2 + 3 extra 10mm poles isn't cheap) plus a total weight around 3.5kg. But it is incredibly strong, free standing, superior ventilation and it's 2 person. If you're ever in Denmark let me know and you can test it out though we don't have any "summits" 😅
Hey Tom! Greetings from the Rocky Mountains. Excellent video as always! Love hearing your insights, perspectives, and overview of the different features of the Nammatj. We are the same height (6'1"). Though I like the idea of the Nammatj, seeing how you fit inside the inner tent confirmed that the Keron or Kaitum will be my next Hilleberg. I have an Allak 3, Rogen, and Anaris - all excellent at their intended purpose. Recently I picked up a set of 10mm poles for the Allak 3. Overkill for most of what I'll see here in the Rockies, but wanted that extra stability. Wow, I underestimated how big of a difference the 10mm poles would make! Hi Tom, I discussed with you previously to pros and cons of the Akto v the Soulo BL which I was struggling to decide upon. I went with the Soulo in the end but let it go as it wasn’t what I practically needed. I also had an Unna and a Nammatj 3, which for whatever reason I also let go and now only own a Niak. This video has me thinking about a Nammatj again as it is so easy to pitch and versatile. Only issue I had was condensation in some conditions, I really struggled with it.. Great video👍
Hi Nick, good to hear from you and sorry to hear that the Soulo didn't work out... I eventually sold mine obviously in favour of this due to the much better space to weight ratio... All tents have their pros and cons and as I frequently say when you seal out moisture from the elements then you seal it in to some extent too. There is no doubt that having the fly right to the ground limits ventilation all round the tent. Most of the American brands don't do this but then that exposes the lower of the tent to splash back and spindrift. I suppose a compromise might work as Hilleberg 3 season tents have a much higher cut on the fly and a higher bath tub to protect the inner tent. I just never have condensation here in Northern Ireland as its always windy and I usually actually pick windy nights to go camping as this is what I enjoy.... I hope this helps..ATB Tom

It was more to see how quick I could get basic shelter in the rain. Just stumbled on this video and appreciate its a year old. What i would say with mine year's ago literally on the first trip i changed the guy structure intitially using paracord and taut-line hitches prior to getting matching guys and linelocks (i tend to go very remote locations where the failure of the tent could not only be risky but also really uncomfortable re having to bivy for prolonged periods. I do not understand why Hilleberg made the guys on the black label go to the same pegging point (probably with weight obsession that people have these days). Hilleberg or not once the guys fail the tent will fail very quickly in storm + wind. I have cut the guylines to give me 8 guys on the side (replaced with 4 new ones to give me improved lenght and pegging sites), and have actually tied on 4 addition guys to the top side anchor point. This gives me lots of options; 1) Low to Moderate wind - i put the 2 guys on 1 peg (as per default) 2) High Wind - I put each side guy (8) onto its own peg 3) Storm Force + I roll down the extra guys on the sides give's me 12 points. Also have tied on 2 additional guylines onto the ends. I cannot emphasis the difference this makes in stability when staggering the angles but also in terms of safety during storms. At present you lose a peg and your tent can fail prior to getting out to sort in the storm. This way even if a peg gets ripped out, you are still anchored, it is for this reason alone i think hilleberg really messed up with thining of the 4 side points, losing a peg means you lost the whole side protection for the pole. Lastly if you can get them in and say its on wet moorland, Delta pegs are fantastic. Have used my Nammatj all over the world in hurricane force winds from the Arctic circle to high altitude. Cracking bit of kit, its a palace if solo, and as you say its not much different to the Soulo in weight. I actually like it for extended bikepacking on really long trips as on down days and in bad weather it just give's me so much more options than the soulo or Akto inside to service and mend parts. I think they all have a place however and enjoy all 4 i have. Lastly great video BTW, your right about the 10mm poles, i use a Nammatj pole on my Akto (same lenght) as ordered an additional one and it makes a considerable difference on the Akto in high wind, again i think on the solo tents with 1 pole like the Akto and Enan for the difference in weight its worth a 10mm pole from the get go!
Hey thank you for taking the time to write this very detailed comment.. I totally agree regarding the guy set up. Many people are having to bail on their camps or get damaged poles due to guy failure usually by not staking the pegs properly.. I dont thing it matters too much what pegs you use as long as you have enough of them... I personally back up all my windward pegs with one or two more and adding extra guy lines supports the poles from all angles should the wind direction change... Hilleberg run a tight business and I think extra guy lines and additional pegs just add to their costs.... Just like adding pockets to the Nammatj.... They sell so many tents just as they are and dont really develop them too much unfortunately IMO... BEST wishes Tom

If alone can sleep at an angle for more room. Nice thing about the nammatj compared to the nallo, is the top doesnt flatten like it does in the nallo when it's narrow end is pitched into the wind.

Great review. I have this tent. I use it solo. It is tough as nails. Very reliable. I also have a Keron 3. I use that as a two man mostly on northern canoe trips. The Keron 3 is also tough as nails. You really can't go wrong with Hilleberg tents. I also own a MH Trango 3.1 which is also an excellent reliable tent. But, between the Keron 3 and the MH Trango 3.1, I prefer the tube tent design of the Keron 3 slightly.
Hey, Robert that's amazing to hear from someone who owns a tent like a Trango 3. I have owned two Trango 2 s and they are well featured and comfortable but managing single handedly is more tricky than the Hillebergs.. The Hillebergs just feel step up in quality too.... Hi Tom, I really loved your rethinking on this tent, not that you were originally incorrect, but rather as life changes so does our thinking, and here is a prime example. I have watched some of those high wind examples of the Nammatj, and there is a tremendous amount of deformation, but you are absolutely right the poles stand firm, and the fabric doesn’t tear. The weight/space/strength/ease of use ratio is irresistible.

As always a great comprehensive test, all Hilleberg tents are spot on, you just have to spend the money, trouble is with tunnel tents and single pole tents, they all flap, they take the wind well but flap, as long as you can live with the flapping it’s ok, personally if I did. It have kids to look after I may well would consider a Hilleberg but for now my Vango Mirage is my storm tent, also 3kg, this test shows just how spacious and well made this tent is. Why can’t they make x/l tents like Rab do with the bags, at 6’3” on a 7 cm mat it just shows not much thought is given to tall campers. Keep em coming

But I think if you crank up the tension and have the guy lines angled forwards and backwards it helps pull the fabric more taught.. XL versions would be nice to... ATB Tom
Great review btw. I love my Nam 2, it just does everything so well. Out of my other Hille's it's the one I reach for the most. I'm thinking of getting rid of my BL Soulo as I hardly use it compared to my Nam. Why take the Soulo when for a couple of hundred grams more you can have so much space and luxury...keep up the good work.
Hi Bruce, I hope that you are well. This is exactly why I bought the Nammatj 2 after owning a Soulo BL... For 200g you have a little sacrifice in strength but massive gains in space and comfort... I would use it 99 percent of the time and if I needed more strength I would slip my Akto pole into the windward side as the poles are the same length. Incidentally I always use one of my Nammatj 2 poles in my AKTO.... ATB Tom

Yeah, the Blaze 60 is amazing and a step down from my previous 70 L Osprey... I must admit though that the 60 is even a bit big now that I am getting more lightweight gear. Still a saving of nearly 1700g on the Osprey which is massive on one item. I also really like the design and features of the pack so you have to compromise somewhere.. Tom
Awesome review as always Tom. The nammatj is a brilliant tent. I, like you went from tunnel (double poled fjallraven abisko lite 2) to geodesics ( crux x2 bomb and x2 storm ) as I originally found the fjallraven too flappy. The material was so loud but tbf the poles were barely moving. I’ve got videos of the fjallraven in recorded 42mph winds and it looks fantastic…….it was just the noise unfortunately. The crux in either storm (2.9kg) or bomb ( 3.4kg) offer supreme protection and stability but obviously inner pitch first presents a different experience when putting up. On reflection the best all rounder was probably my kuiu storm star, strong enough to handle major winds and snow loading, pitches all in one and at 2.6kg is a good weight. Negative was the quality against fjallraven and crux, just not there.
Hi thank you for your detailed comment and sharing your experience of tents.. I have owned a Crux X2 storm but I bought it from Bay and it was tired so I sold it on. It certainly has a great strength to weight ratio but I wasn't impressed with the construction quality and the inner set up with the thin pole slieves... Great to hear of the Kuiu storm star as I have looked at it a couple of times and it looks pretty good.. Sorry to hear of the quality though which is why I rave about the Hillebergs so much... As you told me in your response for my comment two months ago, that you wanted to buy this tent I was looking forward to your review which you have done a great job of course. I made up my mind in the meantime as well and purchased the same tent and used it last week in Germany on one of the northern islands. The weather was quite good and I have to say, that I don’t regret in purchasing this tent over the hilleberg soulo , Which I wanted to buy actually instead. It gives you much more space, it’s almost as strong, and has much more livability and I completely agree with you. I will post today and tomorrow a couple videos, that out of course not your quality, mainly short clips about 30 seconds but you can give me a like as well if you like on the tent. I think it’s great and I look forward to use this for many years, as I look forward to your review as you said from thehilleberg Kaitum…keep it up

I own an Abisko View 2 and love it even thought it’s heavy for a 3 season tent as the materials are superb and I feel like it could stand up to anything. I have looked at an Abisko Shape 2 and was quite impressed although personally I just don't like thin fabrics and the 20d main fly with 40d floor is too light for me... The Keb Endurance 2 a bit heavy whereas Hilleberg have many options in between.. When I am so happy with Hilleberg its too much of a risk to change. However I would love to get a chance to review a Fjalraven tent at some point as I am sure they are great tents... Tom
Great review, as always! I just made the choice to get the Nallo 2 GT, which is similar to the weight of the Nammatj without the GT. I have other BL, RL and YL tents for other conditions, but for me the GT is nice and the red label is sort of a compromise in nearly all conditions, but surprisingly, from real-life use, the one that I reach for most year-round.
Hey thank you for your comments. It's great to hear of your tent collection and which you use the most.. I kind of went in a similar direction and sold this BL and went for a RL Jannu... The Nallo 2GT would be nice to add to my collection as I was very impressed by the Kaitum 2 GT when I tested it. Probably too many choices of Hilleberg s around the 3kg mark ..😁😁

Cracking review as always Tom. There are varying packed weights from suppliers between 2.5 -3kg. Have you weighed the full pack size excluding a footprint.
Hi William, thank you for your positive comments.. Yes I had the tent fly and body in an Osprey 20L dry bag and 14 pegs instead of 18. Total weight was 2890g if I can remember correctly. If conditions are not mad and the ground for pegging is good then you can get away with 10 -12 pegs no worries at all. I even use many of the v pegs from my Akto and this nudges the weight down a little further.. For summer trips you could be running close to 2.8kg... ATB Tom
Watched this last night Tom as getting itchy feet again and looking at the Nammatj 2 and the GT version - not sure if you've tried the GT ? Either way, good review and handles some gnarly weather with ease. I've seen the Hille video with Petra pitching it with their wind machine - was impressive. I've also seen some interesting debate about tunnel tents amongst 'the forums' which suggest that many people don't tension them enough (length wise) and that they need to be placed under a lot of tension to perform at their best. Vango led the way would you believe with their internal guy or 'TBS' system in their tunnel tents, to provide some extra lateral rigidity. I really like the look of the Nammatj, especially the GT - that said, I've just taken delivery of an MSR Tindheim 2 and will hopefully put that through it's paces - ATB, Chris
Hey Chris really great to hear from you....Not tried the GT I am afraid but it could offer a lot of strength, space and durability for the weight... I favoured this Nammatj 2 over the BL Soulo as much more space and only 200g heavier... After this being my second Nammatj I still have finally decided that the flappy inner is just too much for me. The tent wont break but it's just too noisy and drafty inside the tent in winds of 40mph and over. You are totally right regarding the tension length wise. When the wind hits the back or front of the tent it pushes the pole back towards the other pole. This causes a loss of tension in the middle panel and it snaps, cracks and pops... In turn this is transferred to the inner and creates quite a drafty environment.... BUT on a GT you could face the vestibule into the wind and the vestibule panel and pole would take up the slack and the wind force may not be transferred to the inner tent... Its never easy and some small logical considerations can make a big difference.. Great to hear that you have got your hands on the Tindheim so I will be very interested to hear your thoughts on that one.... Hey All the very best wishes... Tom
I wish they made a Nammatj 4 GT..., as an alternative to a heavier Keron 4GT... seems to be a gap in their line up, considering the Nallo/KAitum in the red label class...
Hi, Hilleberg make so many tents at a similar weight so not many gaps but still some I suppose.. At the end of the day they are still a business so hard to tell exactly why they don't make a Nammatj 4 GT.. As the Nammatj is a black label tent designed for the harsher conditions maybe the poles are getting a bit long to keep up the strength when you only have two poles supporting the structure.. Certain design s work well at a certain size but when you make it too big then it needs more poles to support it.. Ok to some extent in a Nallo but then that's a red label... Just my thoughts... Superb review Tom - very useful information. I'm still torn between a Nammatj and a nallo for anything that my Akto and Anjan can't do - so many choices! The GT version of these tents also look excellent but I'm not sure if the added weight makes it worth it.

Hi Tom. Have enjoyed your tent reviews immensely. For my adventures through Fiordland NZ I seem to have narrowed my search down to the Hilleberg Nammatj 2. Key Reasons: Fiordland is extremely wet and windy so 4 season desirable with heavy duty bathtub floor. Ability to erect inner/outer simultaneously, and in windy conditions. For me a 2 person is desirable/necessary as the Soulo, for instance, would be too claustrophobic for me. Fiordland is notorious for sandflies, so cooking from within the tent is not an option (for me). I carry an extra fly to cook under unless at his altitudes where sandflies don't hang out. My question: Is there another Hilleberg tent that I should be considering that meet these primary criteria. Cheers and thanks for all your good work.
Hey, take a look at the Allak 2, there is nothing this tent can't handle, it is basically a bigger soulo with two entrance. I own the Soulo RL, Nammatj 3 GT (for my Huskys) and the Allak 2. I'm 1.80 tall (6 feet) and often spend two or three weeks in my soulo alone, this tent is actually spacious inside and I always feel comfortable. I use it with a groundsheet and you can roll up the entire inner door and have plenty of space. From your criteria and I assume weigh is also a factor I would highly recommend the Allak 2, amazing space and ventilation, super sturdy in all kinds of winds, two vestibules for entrance, wildlife viewing and gear storage. If you camp with another person go for the Allak 3, alone or with dogs and gear Allak 2. Never underestimate the ability and flexibility that a freestanding tent gives you, ground is not perfect under the tent (stones, roots, ants, no shadow), just move it to another spot in seconds ;) Cheers from Switzerland
Hi Brent, thank you for your comments... Its always a tough one with so much choice. I see below there is a good recommendation of an Allak...One of my good friends has a Jannu and Allak and he definitely prefers the Jannu in high winds.. Many many differences of opinion...While I have never tested an Allak I have tested the Staika which has a similar design and it wouldn't be my choice. I think you are on the money here with a Nammatj 2 as I personally find the Soulo small with very limited vestibule space.. If weight is not a killer then the GT version is an option or even the Nammatj 3 as its only 300g heavier than the 2.. Overall durability is a factor for me and while many will say that the red labels are durable enough I personally prefer Black Label Specification. I recently caught the zipper on the inner fabric of this tent by accident (and accidents do happen). When I eventually freed it up the fabric was not even marked.... . ATB Tom

I have used a similar design MSR Hubba 2 person tent that I do like for interior volume and 2 side entries. But it has many down sides. I am leaning heavily towards the durability of the Black Label. Where I'm going (Fiordland) the weather is truely extreme.
@@brentsharp9808 If the weather is this extreme you should also look at the Hilleberg Tarra, it's basically a tunnel tent like the Namatj but with the strength of a dome tent, it has vertical inner walls on each side and is extremely comfortable and and spacious . I don't own it myself, but did test it for several nights.
I’m in the predicament of buying the Janna or the nammatj. I need help in deciding. Weight isn’t an issue as they are the same. For me it would be strength and noise in high winds and strength in snow load.
Jannu.. better in high winds as it's more aerodynamic and also less noisy.. I sold this Nammatj and bought a Jannu for this reason.. I have two other videos perfect to help you on my channel.. Jannu vs Nammatj and my new Jannu under a massive snow load.. Nammatj definitely has more space for two but Jannu has enough.. The flapping of the Nammatj in winds eventually got to me especially in the camp comparing the two tents side by side.. I hope this helps.. Tom
So buy a 10mm pole for the Akto and use it's 9mm to double pole the 'head end' of the Nammatj2 ? The GT version has enough 'garage' space for bikepacking with a Moulton bike.
Having both tents means I can change the pole configuration as required. No extra poles were bought.. I use the Nammatj 2 pole frequently in my Akto and just brought the Akto pole extra here in case I needed it... Yeah the GT version have serious vestibule space.. Been tempted many times.. Hi Alan, I hope you are well.... Sorry for the delay in my reply... I have the Granite Gear Blaze 60. Had it about 6 months and used it for 10 camps I am sure. It saved me 1700g over my Osprey which was a massive saving in weight. The pack is amazing with simple yet effective storage solutions. I dont need or want all the bells and whistles of some packs as I like to keep things simple when in challenging conditions. I love the massive side pockets and hip belt pockets. It feels very high quality and really well made. It's also not just a dry bag with straps if you know what I mean. The 1700g weight saving is such a pro that it easily outweighs the two slight cons... The first con compared to my Osprey is ventilation. Thats not a big deal but worth mentioning. The second con compared to the Osprey (Old model Argon 70) is comfort carrying loads above about 11kg. Up to about that weight and lighter it's very comfortable but over that weight the Osprey blows it away.... That is the only real down side IMO It was made worse by Outdoor Gear Lab rating the osprey Aether and the Blaze the same 8 out of 10 for suspension and comfort (not a chance) especially with the heavier loads. Also not helped by the fact that Granite Gear also claim the pack is comfortable carrying 50lbs or 22kg... This is a serious over estimation IMO again. But the comfort issue is not an issue for me as in winter my pack weight now ranges between 8 and 9kg and the pack with that weight is sublime... Let me know if I can help you any further. Not done a review yet but will eventually get around to it... Have you any trips planned? ATB Tom

A few months back you reviewed the Jannu and seemed really taken with it. What was it in the end that made you go for another Nammatj rather than the Jannu? Also I notice reading the comments here that it sounds like you also seriously considered a Nallo - again same question what made you decide against that as well. Many thanks
Hi Graham, thank you for the comment and buying me some coffees it is honestly really appreciated.. I was definitely very taken with the Jannu as you say and would still consider one in the future but here are the reasons for the Nammatj - Its a Black Label and I love the fabric and pole durability of the Black Label tents. I was wanting a super strong tent for high winds and like I said in the video, Hilleberg themselves state that their strongest tents for wind are Black Label Tunnels that are double polled. I have an Akto where I can use the Nammatj pole in it to make it stronger as its the same length and I can double pole the Nammatj at the windward end using my Akto pole. Flexibility is kind of handy... With the red label Hillebergs I kind of feel I should use a foot print (Just incase of any accidental floor damage) but I don't bother in the Nammatj. So with a Jannu I would prefer a foot print and this would take its weight to 3.5kg 500g heavier than the Nanmmatj 2. The Nammatj 2 also has greater volume in the Vestibule and very fast to erect in harsh conditions. The Jannu is easy to erect in the wind but all the clips and guys etc make it fiddly and more complicated and it takes longer... I am very friendly with the Guy who lent me his Jannu so I hope to do a head to head video in mad conditions sometime soon... Again the Nallo 2 is red label and with a footprint its getting so close to Nammatj 2 in weight. Someone pointed out to me that the Hilleberg 9mm poles are actually only about 8.6mm but the 10mm are actually 10.2mm. This makes for quite a difference and having handled the 10mm poles they are so much thicker and stronger than the 9s. Fabric strength and durability again too for so little weight... The Nammatj and Keron series are for on the move travel, not for basecamping. The saivo, saitaris, and tarra are for basecamping so they have the 8-10 pockets you are looking for

Hi Paul, thank you for your comments and awesome to hear that you enjoyed the video.. I take it you have watched the Hilleberg video ruclips.net/video/9tCSIvYk1zk/видео.html. Apart from that the Hilleberg tunnels with twin vestibules have vertical door walls which really increases the real world length of the tent.. The Jannu too is a bit longer but then also has the sloping rear wall... There is no easy answer. I am hopefully testing a Kaitum shortly so will definalety make comments on its length... ATB Tom

Hi David, thank you for your positive feedback...Tentes 4 Saisons have a green Nammatj 3 at the moment and I have bought 3 Hillebergs from them and really good... No experience with Nallo s I am afraid... It all depends on the use and also the interior volume is definitely less as the rear pole is shorter in the Nallo. The Nammatj is a little easier to handle in high winds due to the 10mm pole. If you want to camp in exposed locations in the winter then the Nammatj. I have on two occasions been deciding on either and on both went for the Nammatj but that's because I camp frequently in harsh conditions.. I just didn't want to be camping on a summit when it was kicking off and wish I had a stronger tent.. If that's not the type of camping you think you fancy then the Nallo. I hope this helps as I understand its not an easy decision and many people will tell you different things... Did you know that the Hilleberg "10mm" are really 10,25 mm and the "9mm" are really 8,64mm ? That mean the difference between them are really 1,6 mm, explain better the difference in strenght. Another funny thing, my HB Nammatj 3 bought 1997 have the 9mm poles ! I just saw it a few weeks ago because I got the tent out, put it up to check everything since my brother is going to borrow it, wam´nted to make sure everything was ok. Guess if I was surprised to see imprinted on the poles 8,64 mm ! I contacted Hilleberg about it and they confirmed. They didnt have red label tent at that time.

I need a new tent and it's a toss up between one of these and another Quasar. I totally understand the pitching first and the ease and speed of pitching argument, but ultimately, it relies on 4 begs to hold it up, snow loading is a problem and it's noisy. I see why a buddy of mine uses hers in the Arctic, skis at the front, poles at the back and it goes up like an umbrella. But for me on a mountain, it won't work on rocks and it snows a lot more. Both of which, this tent doesn't like. And until I win the lottery, I can't see myself buying one of each! Thoughts?
Hi Dave, dont buy the Nammatj.... You dont want to like the Nammatj so you will look and concentrate on its weaknesses.. Snow loading is not a weakness as its rare that snow will build up on the roof... How many times do you get wet snow with no wind?? If that happens then manage it before it becomes a problem and knock it off from inside the tent. The snow will build up on the sides, front and back of the tent which are all super resistant due to the vertical walls and 10mm poles... the vestibule will handle snow better than a Quasar as its held by straps and not bungie cord which stretches allowing the vestibule to deform and disappear under the load... All tents rely on pegs for wind resistance and you again just need to manage this.. BUT here is the massive BUT.. To say its more noisy in wind is an understatement... It's mad from banging and flapping creating drafts inside too. When you go from an inner first tight fabric to this flappy inner you will hate it just as I did coming from my Tango's and Mountain 25... I couldn't live with my first one so I sold it... Eventually... I thought I would give it another go and same problem. In 40 mph winds it's just really uncomfortable. I camped with a friend one night using the Nammatj and a Jannu side by side and the Jannu was way more comfortable in the wind as its inner is actually very taught. So I feel a nice new shiny Quasar or Super Quasar would be nice and a very safe bet as you know what you are getting. best wishes Tom
Hi Tan, thank you for your comment.. I absolutely did prefer a 70 but now I have moved to a 60 and its more than enough. I think the size alone of your tent has a big influence.. When I am using my one person tent then a 50 would actually do... My argument before for the 70 was that I could just throw everyone in to it and not have to worry an=bout micro packing everything. Now though weight is more important and I saves 1700 7 by moving from an Osprey Argon 70 to a Granite gear Blaze 60... I hope this helps... ATB Tom

Hi Alan, I only have used the Blaze I am afraid.... It's a super well made pack with awesome construction and attention to detail. Simple too which is actually what you need when the conditions are a bit more challenging. Granite gear are also good at responding on Instagram so I suspect that some of these characteristics carry over from pack to pack.... Gregory packs just not as popular here in the UK.... ATB Tom
Hi Tom, I asked you a while ago about recommending a two man four season budget tent, I think one on the list was a vango but I'm not sure. Anyway somehow all the files on my tablet have been wiped. Hi Jonathan, try something like a Vango Halo 200 or 300. They have good space and twin vestibules and are pretty much freestanding which is handy for campsites. Decent enough weather resistance too.. For a little more money look at the Robens Pioneer 2 or 3 EX.... I obviously cant do all your research but if you have a look at some options and let me know I can point out some pros and cons... I agree on the length as well. I'm 6ft 2in and just cannot buy one. I can't justify spending $1000+USD on something that I'm going to struggle fitting in...not worth it. Good review otherwise!
Yeah its a pity.. I hear the Nammatj 3 is the answer.. 200g heavier which is very little but the extra overall height means the real wall is not sloping in so much and you can sleep diagonally too.. I d love to see inside a 3 myself... ATB and thanks for thus very relevant comment.. Tom
I suppose it just depends on what tents you already have and the type of camping that you do.... If you have a Nammatj 3 GT then not much point getting a Nammatj 2 so a Nallo 2 would be a better option for something different.... ATB Tom

Hi Alan, they are a bit different.... Tarra nice with the taught inner which is less flappy and noisy in higher winds... Extremely stable and spacious for two. Nammatj 2 GT for the weight saving and serious vestibule space. Nammatj is very stable too but more flappy due to larger panel size.. My pick would probable be the Tarra but also look at the Keron 3 which has more internal space than both and is 4kg... Never an easy decision and they all have for and against just individual preference.... Let me know which one you go for if you decide to pull the trigger... ATB Tom
I know its hard to do, but I would love to see a side by side in the same spot in hard wind test of two same model Hilleberg tent, one of them with double poles. Would it be possible to preorder with extra guyline attathment point kind of in the middle of the two short ends, the plece you had a lot of flappings ? or have a skilled seamstress (with experience of slippery silnylon) to do it ?
Hi Bo, at some point when I further test the Nammatj I can show the difference of double poles possibly but the wind really needs to be at least 50mph plus maybe even more to see any difference. regarding the side guy points, No Hilleberg would not be interested I think in this. @@TOMHEANEY100 Thanks for quick respons! I love the way you did the "Soulo black label" versus "Soulored label" ! If I remember right the difference in wind performance was minor once all the guy lines where up. What it didnt show, of course, was the long term durability, so for someone going for a long trip, months long or more, in harsh condition I would definitely go wit black label.
While Iike tunnel tents like this, I cannot stand the noise of all that exposed fabric. They flap like crazy in strong wind and deform a lot. I prefer tents with smaller panels between supporting poles so the tent is more rigid and taut.
Hi, thank you for your comments... Yes this was the reason I sold my previous red Nammatj 2 in favour of more poles to reduce the panel size and hence flapping in the wind.. The problem though for me is the extra weight and most or these designs are inner first pitching.. I also love the quality and durability of this tent.... When the guy lines are tensioned at an angle forwards and backwards they help pull the poles and fabric apart reducing some of the flapping. Also when the wind gets over 50mph all tents are fairly noisy.... ATB and thank you for sharing your experience... Tom
It's quite large because of the overall tent volume and heavy duty strong fabrics which will just not compress as well as lighter ones.. But this tent is for space, strength and durability so pack size has to take a hit .. Hopefully that helps.. best wishes Tom
@TOMHEANEY100 you don't happen to the packed measurements? I'm planning a multimonth motorcycle camping trip so weight doesn't matter as much as durability. But shape & size will matter when getting saddlebags & a top bag.

I have this tent. I backpacked with my wife in the sierras during the spring and I was carrying tent, communal items and food, and my own gear . The *killer features* that made this a favorite: 1) I can setup and take down the tent solo without backaches, and 2) the wife was warm and slept well in mid to late 20 degree weather.

Hi Tom another cracking and typically detailed review! I’m a big fan of this tent and nearly bought it myself, so great to hear you are enjoying it. The 220cm inner length did make me think it was was tight for me height wise. But as Hilleberg recommends, pitching vestibule into wind should solve any issues of the rear sloping wall pushing the outer onto inner and in turn, causing this to touch your sleeping bag. Took me a while to get my head around this with my Jannu and I actually reached out to Hilleberg who confirmed it to be correct, as it goes against 99% of conventional wisdom of pitching rear into wind! The steeper angle for the vestibule really does enhance the usable space. Also love the simplicity of pitching it offers with just 2 pole sleeves. Health to enjoy! Cheers Gary

I like pitching the "front" of a tent into the wind anyway because the bugs tend to gather down in the lee of the foot end, so not a lot of issues with bugs entering when getting in and out of the head end. But, I'm 5"10" and I use it solo so the interior dimension is fine, especially if I sleep with a diagonal orientation.
I am a tall user ( 1.92m ) and went with the Nammatj 3. It’s only 200gr more, but is 105cm inner tent height as to 95cm with Nammatj 2. It’s perfect for me and my 25kg dog ( Springer Spaniel ). I can lie slightly diagonal in the tent and not touching the inner tent at all. Most likely also due to the 10cm extra height the sloping at foot end is less pronounced as with Nammatj 2.
I looked at the Keron, but Hilleberg stopped making the Keron 2 and the Keron 3 is just way too heavy ( over 4kg ) and taking too much space in the backpack.
Then the Kaitum 2 could have been an alternative, but as with all their Red label tents, the vents have no mesh layer! Its either closed or fully open. Not nice in Summer with a million mosquitos and flies or in winter during snow+wind.
So if you are tall as me, look into Nammatj 3. The weight difference and packsize compared to Nammatj 2 is neglible.
Hey thank you for this comment.. Great advice... I use my tents alone so would never have thought about the Nammatj 3.. Absolutely agree as 200g is such a little difference in weight and makes a big practical difference in reality due to the extra pole hight as you say altering the rear sloping angle.. Would be tempted myself... I honestly was not aware of the weight difference as never considered a 3 person tent... Once again thank you for sharing a great solution for taller users.... ATB Tom
@@TOMHEANEY100 Hehe. i myself also never considered it before, but found it in a Norwegian discussion group. The Nammatj 3 isn’t really a 3 person tent in my opinion, but see it more like a comfortable 2 person tent.
I see it being nice for one tall person, as you also get an extra wide vestibule, so more space there too. Handy in winter time me thinks.
But more importantly you can use any sleeping mat you like without worry it being too thick, wide or too long. 😉
When I go with my wife and son plus dog, we use the Helsport Spitsbergen Exteme 3 and that one is a true 3 person tent with its 180cm squared wide and two vertical walls.
Yep, I went with Nammatj 3 for solo use in the snow. Even though the vestibule is great I like to have my gear in the tent and free up the vestibule space for cooking etc. Once you dig in, it is quite a good amount of space. I love the GT but just cannot justify the extra weight and volume for one. 200g though from the Nammatj 2 to 3 was an easy decision. It is a bomber tent 👍

I’m interested to hear that you’ve sold your BL Soulo, I did consider selling my Staika for one but glad I didn’t now. Interesting also to hear you say that BL tunnels are the strongest in the wind.

Hi Phil, I hope that you are well.... Fab to hear that you enjoyed this video and really appreciate the positive feedback.. Here is the actual quote from Hilleberg.... " We purposely do not give any wind speed ratings for the tents. When you get a number indicating wind speed strength the tests are usually done by bolting the tent down in the floor and then turning the wind machine on and measuring the wind speed. It is not a very good way of measuring what really happens when you are actually using the tent outdoors since the wind can turn and also one of the first things that can happen in severe weather is that the pegs come out - or even worse that the tent cant be set up. The average working speed that we use is around 112 km/h but that is not necessarily the max speed - again, we do not give one specific number for it. For extreme wind we would recommend using a black label tunnel tent with extra guy lines and doubling the poles. Hope that helps! ATB Tom

I have always been a Gregory guy, but as I've gotten older (74) I'm looking at alternatives. Currently, I am planning a few overnight backpacks to test out a few new items I purchased. My backpacking buddy has been dealing with the death of his mom ( she was 102) and his wife who has had a series of nagging illnesses. We had a three-week trip planned for Wyoming's Wind River area, but due to her medical situation, the trip was postponed. Wyoming is a great place to hike, with spectacular mountains, all total it is one of our favorite places to visit. Together we have many trips into the "Winds." I bet not many tents could survive a night of consistent 40-60 mph winds...maybe 15 in the world. Even fewer can actually be SETUP by yourself in such conditions. You are absolutely right. Hilleberg designs are the real deal

Definitely the best in depth easy to understand and comprehensive review I have seen, just wish you had a nallo as that's the tent I have just purchased although is a similar tent so for strength and ventilation I think this review fits with the nallo.

Great to see you back Tom and reviewing tents. Since your last one I have purchased a Staika and very pleased with it. However, it was a close run thing between that and the Nammatj but the length at 6ft 4" swayed me to the Staika.

I hear from another comment that the Nammatj 3 is a great option for taller people. Its only 200g heavier than the 2 and being slightly higher makes the angle at the foot end a little steeper giving more usable length and if you can sleep slightly diagonally makes a difference too.... Great review! For me the Hilleberg Niak is my goto 3-season solo tent and I have an Keron 3 as my harsch weather/base tent. But as I live in Sweden more then often harsch equals to lots off snow and cold rather then wind. In the cold, space for bulky gear is gold even solo bringing a 3 ppl tent. I probably would get away fine with the Nammatj 2 solo but I cant really motivate cost for the 1Kg:isch saving. Also in the Keron length isn't a problem :) Nice color, all my Hillebergs are sand!

Great stuff Tom and does look an interesting tent. Have to say that I am going back away from lightweeight tents and looking at space and comfort. Actually looking at tents in the 2.7kg + range as I feel stronger fabrics and space is more important to me now than saving a 1kg or so. Atb and keep up the great videos.

Hi Looked at buying a Nallo on many occasions but opted for the Nammatj as I have already experienced 60mph winds here in Northern Ireland in August... Hi Tom, you're my favourite reviewer on RUclips I think! I'm also a Hilleberg fanboy, having slept, owned or tested almost all of them now, any gaps I have are firmly located in the Yellow label as I'm too fond of durability and 4 season application to compromise strength. Having said that, I sell them as part of my job and have been on trips with Hilleberg so I feel relatively confident with them, though I'm always learning more. I agree with your points, Hilleberg has been very privelleged to have had the strength in its reputation/sales to resist any pressure to alter, adapt or re-design their products, they have enjoyed tweaking them as they see fit, due to incredible demand. The UK after sales market is very strong, this is not the case everywhere in Europe though. I also firmly believe 2 additional pockets are overdue and that a foot end alteration to maximise the length/height ratio would be warmly received, the two additional peg loops at the foot end do not contribute that much.
I owned the Nammatj 2 and sold it after sleeping in it two nights, simply because of the foot end forcing me to sleep diagonally, although I am only 5"11. I will probably purchase it again though as I was naive to how genuinely impressive the Nammatj 2 is compared to the Soulo for example in terms of weight, space and durability.
It would be very interesting to see your take on the Kaitum 2 and the Allak 2 by comparison, as I feel these two come equally close to perfection at a similar weight. Thanks for another great review!
Hi Green Panda, thank you so much for your positive comments as someone who has so much experience of Hilleberg tents.. I am always learning too... I caught the inner of my Nammatj recently in the zipper and had to carefully free it up.. Not only was the fabric not holed but not even a mark on it.. try that with a 20d fabric.... Great to hear that someone listens to my rant about the pockets and rear peg loops etc... and agrees of course ha ha... I know Hilleberg suggest extending the pull out points at the rear but this only pulls the inner and outer apart at the bottom and not the middle and up where the separation isn't good in moderate winds... As another commenter pointed out the Nammatj 3 is only 200g more and slightly taller resulting in a steeper angle at the foot of the tent giving more usable volume length. Sleep diagonally as you have done before and that could make a fair difference... ATB and thank you once again... Tom
@@TOMHEANEY100 No problem, you are welcome. You are bang on with the problem not being rectified with additional peg points, the tent sags further up. It isn't a fatal flaw but it is a limitation. I used the Nammatj 2 as a single person 4 season tent, and I don't much fancy carrying a 3 person tent (and additional weight/unnecessary space) to combat this. If you are willing to compromise a little bit on material strength and quite possibly require double poles earlier than a Nammatj would, a Kaitum 2 provides great space for approximately the same weight and you eliminate completely the issue with sloping walls
@@TOMHEANEY100 Despite being a big Hilleberg fan (I've 4 at present, had and sold others), I really enjoyed your comparison video between the Unna, Akto and Soulo, I respect and admire all of them but all them have such serious drawbacks that I always go back to their 2 person tent range and the Nammatj 2 really is one of the absolute best, ticks so many boxes. You're a tall fella so it would be interesting to see how you fare in the Allak 2, especially with 10mm poles for exposed camps. Could be a match made in heaven, if you are willing to eat the cost (Allak 2 + 3 extra 10mm poles isn't cheap) plus a total weight around 3.5kg. But it is incredibly strong, free standing, superior ventilation and it's 2 person. If you're ever in Denmark let me know and you can test it out though we don't have any "summits" 😅
Hey Tom! Greetings from the Rocky Mountains. Excellent video as always! Love hearing your insights, perspectives, and overview of the different features of the Nammatj. We are the same height (6'1"). Though I like the idea of the Nammatj, seeing how you fit inside the inner tent confirmed that the Keron or Kaitum will be my next Hilleberg. I have an Allak 3, Rogen, and Anaris - all excellent at their intended purpose. Recently I picked up a set of 10mm poles for the Allak 3. Overkill for most of what I'll see here in the Rockies, but wanted that extra stability. Wow, I underestimated how big of a difference the 10mm poles would make! Hi Tom, I discussed with you previously to pros and cons of the Akto v the Soulo BL which I was struggling to decide upon. I went with the Soulo in the end but let it go as it wasn’t what I practically needed. I also had an Unna and a Nammatj 3, which for whatever reason I also let go and now only own a Niak.
This video has me thinking about a Nammatj again as it is so easy to pitch and versatile. Only issue I had was condensation in some conditions, I really struggled with it..

Hi Nick, good to hear from you and sorry to hear that the Soulo didn't work out... I eventually sold mine obviously in favour of this due to the much better space to weight ratio... All tents have their pros and cons and as I frequently say when you seal out moisture from the elements then you seal it in to some extent too. There is no doubt that having the fly right to the ground limits ventilation all round the tent. Most of the American brands don't do this but then that exposes the lower of the tent to splash back and spindrift. I suppose a compromise might work as Hilleberg 3 season tents have a much higher cut on the fly and a higher bath tub to protect the inner tent. I just never have condensation here in Northern Ireland as its always windy and I usually actually pick windy nights to go camping as this is what I enjoy.... I hope this helps..ATB Tom

Just stumbled on this video and appreciate its a year old. What i would say with mine year's ago literally on the first trip i changed the guy structure intitially using paracord and taut-line hitches prior to getting matching guys and linelocks (i tend to go very remote locations where the failure of the tent could not only be risky but also really uncomfortable re having to bivy for prolonged periods. I do not understand why Hilleberg made the guys on the black label go to the same pegging point (probably with weight obsession that people have these days). Hilleberg or not once the guys fail the tent will fail very quickly in storm + wind. I have cut the guylines to give me 8 guys on the side (replaced with 4 new ones to give me improved lenght and pegging sites), and have actually tied on 4 addition guys to the top side anchor point. This gives me lots of options;
1) Low to Moderate wind - i put the 2 guys on 1 peg (as per default)
2) High Wind - I put each side guy (8) onto its own peg
3) Storm Force + I roll down the extra guys on the sides give's me 12 points. Also have tied on 2 additional guylines onto the ends.
I cannot emphasis the difference this makes in stability when staggering the angles but also in terms of safety during storms. At present you lose a peg and your tent can fail prior to getting out to sort in the storm. This way even if a peg gets ripped out, you are still anchored, it is for this reason alone i think hilleberg really messed up with thining of the 4 side points, losing a peg means you lost the whole side protection for the pole.
Lastly if you can get them in and say its on wet moorland, Delta pegs are fantastic. Have used my Nammatj all over the world in hurricane force winds from the Arctic circle to high altitude. Cracking bit of kit, its a palace if solo, and as you say its not much different to the Soulo in weight. I actually like it for extended bikepacking on really long trips as on down days and in bad weather it just give's me so much more options than the soulo or Akto inside to service and mend parts. I think they all have a place however and enjoy all 4 i have.
Lastly great video BTW, your right about the 10mm poles, i use a Nammatj pole on my Akto (same lenght) as ordered an additional one and it makes a considerable difference on the Akto in high wind, again i think on the solo tents with 1 pole like the Akto and Enan for the difference in weight its worth a 10mm pole from the get go!
Hey thank you for taking the time to write this very detailed comment.. I totally agree regarding the guy set up. Many people are having to bail on their camps or get damaged poles due to guy failure usually by not staking the pegs properly.. I dont thing it matters too much what pegs you use as long as you have enough of them... I personally back up all my windward pegs with one or two more and adding extra guy lines supports the poles from all angles should the wind direction change...
Hilleberg run a tight business and I think extra guy lines and additional pegs just add to their costs.... Just like adding pockets to the Nammatj.... They sell so many tents just as they are and dont really develop them too much unfortunately IMO... BEST wishes Tom

That’s a great review, Tom. Should be a ‘go to’ for anyone considering this tent. That ventilation takes some beating - it must create a good flow through in a breeze. Sheep poo…: we have a lot of that here 😂

If alone can sleep at an angle for more room. Nice thing about the nammatj compared to the nallo, is the top doesnt flatten like it does in the nallo when it's narrow end is pitched into the wind.

Great review. I have this tent. I use it solo. It is tough as nails. Very reliable. I also have a Keron 3. I use that as a two man mostly on northern canoe trips. The Keron 3 is also tough as nails. You really can't go wrong with Hilleberg tents. I also own a MH Trango 3.1 which is also an excellent reliable tent. But, between the Keron 3 and the MH Trango 3.1, I prefer the tube tent design of the Keron 3 slightly.
Hey, Robert that's amazing to hear from someone who owns a tent like a Trango 3. I have owned two Trango 2 s and they are well featured and comfortable but managing single handedly is more tricky than the Hillebergs.. The Hillebergs just feel step up in quality too.... I really loved your rethinking on this tent, not that you were originally incorrect, but rather as life changes so does our thinking, and here is a prime example. I have watched some of those high wind examples of the Nammatj, and there is a tremendous amount of deformation, but you are absolutely right the poles stand firm, and the fabric doesn’t tear. The weight/space/strength/ease of use ratio is irresistible.

Hi Tom long time no tests ! As always a great comprehensive test, all Hilleberg tents are spot on, you just have to spend the money, trouble is with tunnel tents and single pole tents, they all flap, they take the wind well but flap, as long as you can live with the flapping it’s ok, personally if I did. It have kids to look after I may well would consider a Hilleberg but for now my Vango Mirage is my storm tent, also 3kg, this test shows just how spacious and well made this tent is.
Why can’t they make x/l tents like Rab do with the bags, at 6’3” on a 7 cm mat it just shows not much thought is given to tall campers.

Great review btw. I love my Nam 2, it just does everything so well. Out of my other Hille's it's the one I reach for the most. I'm thinking of getting rid of my BL Soulo as I hardly use it compared to my Nam. Why take the Soulo when for a couple of hundred grams more you can have so much space and luxury...keep up the good work.
Hi Bruce, I hope that you are well. This is exactly why I bought the Nammatj 2 after owning a Soulo BL... For 200g you have a little sacrifice in strength but massive gains in space and comfort... I would use it 99 percent of the time and if I needed more strength I would slip my Akto pole into the windward side as the poles are the same length. Incidentally I always use one of my Nammatj 2 poles in my AKTO.... ATB Tom

My first pack was a Granite Gear Crown VC 60 and loved it, it was just too large.
Yeah, the Blaze 60 is amazing and a step down from my previous 70 L Osprey... I must admit though that the 60 is even a bit big now that I am getting more lightweight gear. Still a saving of nearly 1700g on the Osprey which is massive on one item. I also really like the design and features of the pack so you have to compromise somewhere.. Tom

I, like you went from tunnel (double poled fjallraven abisko lite 2) to geodesics ( crux x2 bomb and x2 storm ) as I originally found the fjallraven too flappy. The material was so loud but tbf the poles were barely moving. I’ve got videos of the fjallraven in recorded 42mph winds and it looks fantastic…….it was just the noise unfortunately. The crux in either storm (2.9kg) or bomb ( 3.4kg) offer supreme protection and stability but obviously inner pitch first presents a different experience when putting up. On reflection the best all rounder was probably my kuiu storm star, strong enough to handle major winds and snow loading, pitches all in one and at 2.6kg is a good weight. Negative was the quality against fjallraven and crux, just not there.
Hi thank you for your detailed comment and sharing your experience of tents.. I have owned a Crux X2 storm but I bought it from Bay and it was tired so I sold it on. It certainly has a great strength to weight ratio but I wasn't impressed with the construction quality and the inner set up with the thin pole slieves... Great to hear of the Kuiu storm star as I have looked at it a couple of times and it looks pretty good.. Sorry to hear of the quality though which is why I rave about the Hillebergs so much... As you told me in your response for my comment two months ago, that you wanted to buy this tent I was looking forward to your review which you have done a great job of course. I made up my mind in the meantime as well and purchased the same tent and used it last week in Germany on one of the northern islands. The weather was quite good and I have to say, that I don’t regret in purchasing this tent over the hilleberg soulo , Which I wanted to buy actually instead. It gives you much more space, it’s almost as strong, and has much more livability and I completely agree with you. I will post today and tomorrow a couple videos, that out of course not your quality, mainly short clips about 30 seconds but you can give me a like as well if you like on the tent. I think it’s great and I look forward to use this for many years, as I look forward to your review as you said from thehilleberg Kaitum…keep it up

Hey Tom ... I have a new left hip! My surgery went well and was able to come home after a long 12.5-hour day. Three weeks of hanging at my apartment and no driving, but this surgery is well worth the time off. Most people sleep with their legs bent a bit, so the length should be OK even for tall people.

I own an Abisko View 2 and love it even thought it’s heavy for a 3 season tent as the materials are superb and I feel like it could stand up to anything. I would be interested to hear your thoughts on their range of tents.

I have looked at an Abisko Shape 2 and was quite impressed although personally I just don't like thin fabrics and the 20d main fly with 40d floor is too light for me... The Keb Endurance 2 a bit heavy whereas Hilleberg have many options in between.. When I am so happy with Hilleberg its too much of a risk to change. However I would love to get a chance to review a Fjalraven tent at some point as I am sure they are great tents... Tom

Great review, as always! I just made the choice to get the Nallo 2 GT, which is similar to the weight of the Nammatj without the GT. I have other BL, RL and YL tents for other conditions, but for me the GT is nice and the red label is sort of a compromise in nearly all conditions, but surprisingly, from real-life use, the one that I reach for most year-round.
Hey thank you for your comments. It's great to hear of your tent collection and which you use the most.. I kind of went in a similar direction and sold this BL and went for a RL Jannu... The Nallo 2GT would be nice to add to my collection as I was very impressed by the Kaitum 2 GT when I tested it. Probably too many choices of Hilleberg s around the 3kg mark ..😁😁

Cracking review as always Tom. There are varying packed weights from suppliers between 2.5 -3kg. Have you weighed the full pack size excluding a footprint.
Hi William, thank you for your positive comments.. Yes I had the tent fly and body in an Osprey 20L dry bag and 14 pegs instead of 18. Total weight was 2890g if I can remember correctly. If conditions are not mad and the ground for pegging is good then you can get away with 10 -12 pegs no worries at all. I even use many of the v pegs from my Akto and this nudges the weight down a little further.. For summer trips you could be running close to 2.8kg... ATB Tom

Watched this last night Tom as getting itchy feet again and looking at the Nammatj 2 and the GT version - not sure if you've tried the GT ? Either way, good review and handles some gnarly weather with ease. I've seen the Hille video with Petra pitching it with their wind machine - was impressive. I've also seen some interesting debate about tunnel tents amongst 'the forums' which suggest that many people don't tension them enough (length wise) and that they need to be placed under a lot of tension to perform at their best. Vango led the way would you believe with their internal guy or 'TBS' system in their tunnel tents, to provide some extra lateral rigidity. I really like the look of the Nammatj, especially the GT - that said, I've just taken delivery of an MSR Tindheim 2 and will hopefully put that through it's paces - ATB, Chris
Hey Chris really great to hear from you....Not tried the GT I am afraid but it could offer a lot of strength, space and durability for the weight... I favoured this Nammatj 2 over the BL Soulo as much more space and only 200g heavier... After this being my second Nammatj I still have finally decided that the flappy inner is just too much for me. The tent wont break but it's just too noisy and drafty inside the tent in winds of 40mph and over. You are totally right regarding the tension length wise. When the wind hits the back or front of the tent it pushes the pole back towards the other pole. This causes a loss of tension in the middle panel and it snaps, cracks and pops... In turn this is transferred to the inner and creates quite a drafty environment.... BUT on a GT you could face the vestibule into the wind and the vestibule panel and pole would take up the slack and the wind force may not be transferred to the inner tent... Its never easy and some small logical considerations can make a big difference.. Great to hear that you have got your hands on the Tindheim so I will be very interested to hear your thoughts on that one.... Hey All the very best wishes... Tom
I wish they made a Nammatj 4 GT..., as an alternative to a heavier Keron 4GT... seems to be a gap in their line up, considering the Nallo/KAitum in the red label class...
Hi, Hilleberg make so many tents at a similar weight so not many gaps but still some I suppose.. At the end of the day they are still a business so hard to tell exactly why they don't make a Nammatj 4 GT.. As the Nammatj is a black label tent designed for the harsher conditions maybe the poles are getting a bit long to keep up the strength when you only have two poles supporting the structure.. Certain design s work well at a certain size but when you make it too big then it needs more poles to support it.. Ok to some extent in a Nallo but then that's a red label... Just my thoughts... Superb review Tom - very useful information. I'm still torn between a Nammatj and a nallo for anything that my Akto and Anjan can't do - so many choices! The GT version of these tents also look excellent but I'm not sure if the added weight makes it worth it.

Hi Tom. Have enjoyed your tent reviews immensely. For my adventures through Fiordland NZ I seem to have narrowed my search down to the Hilleberg Nammatj 2. Key Reasons: Fiordland is extremely wet and windy so 4 season desirable with heavy duty bathtub floor. Ability to erect inner/outer simultaneously, and in windy conditions. For me a 2 person is desirable/necessary as the Soulo, for instance, would be too claustrophobic for me. Fiordland is notorious for sandflies, so cooking from within the tent is not an option (for me). I carry an extra fly to cook under unless at his altitudes where sandflies don't hang out.
My question: Is there another Hilleberg tent that I should be considering that meet these primary criteria. Cheers and thanks for all your good work.
Hey, take a look at the Allak 2, there is nothing this tent can't handle, it is basically a bigger soulo with two entrance.
I own the Soulo RL, Nammatj 3 GT (for my Huskys) and the Allak 2.
I'm 1.80 tall (6 feet) and often spend two or three weeks in my soulo alone, this tent is actually spacious inside and I always feel comfortable. I use it with a groundsheet and you can roll up the entire inner door and have plenty of space.
From your criteria and I assume weigh is also a factor I would highly recommend the Allak 2, amazing space and ventilation, super sturdy in all kinds of winds, two vestibules for entrance, wildlife viewing and gear storage.
If you camp with another person go for the Allak 3, alone or with dogs and gear Allak 2.
Never underestimate the ability and flexibility that a freestanding tent gives you, ground is not perfect under the tent (stones, roots, ants, no shadow), just move it to another spot in seconds ;)

Hi Brent, thank you for your comments... Its always a tough one with so much choice. I see below there is a good recommendation of an Allak...One of my good friends has a Jannu and Allak and he definitely prefers the Jannu in high winds.. Many many differences of opinion...While I have never tested an Allak I have tested the Staika which has a similar design and it wouldn't be my choice. I think you are on the money here with a Nammatj 2 as I personally find the Soulo small with very limited vestibule space.. If weight is not a killer then the GT version is an option or even the Nammatj 3 as its only 300g heavier than the 2.. Overall durability is a factor for me and while many will say that the red labels are durable enough I personally prefer Black Label Specification. I recently caught the zipper on the inner fabric of this tent by accident (and accidents do happen). When I eventually freed it up the fabric was not even marked.... . ATB Tom

I have used a similar design MSR Hubba 2 person tent that I do like for interior volume and 2 side entries. But it has many down sides. I am leaning heavily towards the durability of the Black Label. Where I'm going (Fiordland) the weather is truely extreme.
@@brentsharp9808 If the weather is this extreme you should also look at the Hilleberg Tarra, it's basically a tunnel tent like the Namatj but with the strength of a dome tent, it has vertical inner walls on each side and is extremely comfortable and and spacious

I’m in the predicament of buying the Janna or the nammatj. I need help in deciding. Weight isn’t an issue as they are the same. For me it would be strength and noise in high winds and strength in snow load.
Jannu.. better in high winds as it's more aerodynamic and also less noisy.. I sold this Nammatj and bought a Jannu for this reason.. I have two other videos perfect to help you on my channel.. Jannu vs Nammatj and my new Jannu under a massive snow load.. Nammatj definitely has more space for two but Jannu has enough.. The flapping of the Nammatj in winds eventually got to me especially in the camp comparing the two tents side by side.. I hope this helps.. Tom
So buy a 10mm pole for the Akto and use it's 9mm to double pole the 'head end' of the Nammatj2 ? The GT version has enough 'garage' space for bikepacking with a Moulton bike.
Having both tents means I can change the pole configuration as required. No extra poles were bought.. I use the Nammatj 2 pole frequently in my Akto and just brought the Akto pole extra here in case I needed it... Yeah the GT version have serious vestibule space.. Been tempted many times.. I have however reviewed the Kaitum GT which gave me the feel for a GT model and the Vestibule was super impressive.... GT models just don't suit me as they are too heavy and bulky for me to carry.. Hi Alan, I hope you are well.... Sorry for the delay in my reply... I have the Granite Gear Blaze 60. Had it about 6 months and used it for 10 camps I am sure. It saved me 1700g over my Osprey which was a massive saving in weight. The pack is amazing with simple yet effective storage solutions. I dont need or want all the bells and whistles of some packs as I like to keep things simple when in challenging conditions. I love the massive side pockets and hip belt pockets. It feels very high quality and really well made. It's also not just a dry bag with straps if you know what I mean. The 1700g weight saving is such a pro that it easily outweighs the two slight cons... The first con compared to my Osprey is ventilation. Thats not a big deal but worth mentioning. The second con compared to the Osprey (Old model Argon 70) is comfort carrying loads above about 11kg. Up to about that weight and lighter it's very comfortable but over that weight the Osprey blows it away.... That is the only real down side IMO It was made worse by Outdoor Gear Lab rating the osprey Aether and the Blaze the same 8 out of 10 for suspension and comfort (not a chance) especially with the heavier loads. Also not helped by the fact that Granite Gear also claim the pack is comfortable carrying 50lbs or 22kg... This is a serious over estimation IMO again. But the comfort issue is not an issue for me as in winter my pack weight now ranges between 8 and 9kg and the pack with that weight is sublime... Let me know if I can help you any further. Hi Tom. Thanks for another great review of a Hilleberg tent in its element. Your reviews really are the best. I currently have a Trailstar but it's too flipping breezy for winter camping! A few months back you reviewed the Jannu and seemed really taken with it. What was it in the end that made you go for another Nammatj rather than the Jannu? Also I notice reading the comments here that it sounds like you also seriously considered a Nallo - again same question what made you decide against that as well. Many thanks
Hi Graham, thank you for the comment and buying me some coffees it is honestly really appreciated.. I was definitely very taken with the Jannu as you say and would still consider one in the future but here are the reasons for the Nammatj - Its a Black Label and I love the fabric and pole durability of the Black Label tents. I was wanting a super strong tent for high winds and like I said in the video, Hilleberg themselves state that their strongest tents for wind are Black Label Tunnels that are double polled. I have an Akto where I can use the Nammatj pole in it to make it stronger as its the same length and I can double pole the Nammatj at the windward end using my Akto pole. Flexibility is kind of handy... With the red label Hillebergs I kind of feel I should use a foot print (Just incase of any accidental floor damage) but I don't bother in the Nammatj. So with a Jannu I would prefer a foot print and this would take its weight to 3.5kg 500g heavier than the Nanmmatj 2. The Nammatj 2 also has greater volume in the Vestibule and very fast to erect in harsh conditions. The Jannu is easy to erect in the wind but all the clips and guys etc make it fiddly and more complicated and it takes longer... I am very friendly with the Guy who lent me his Jannu so I hope to do a head to head video in mad conditions sometime soon...
Again the Nallo 2 is red label and with a footprint its getting so close to Nammatj 2 in weight. Someone pointed out to me that the Hilleberg 9mm poles are actually only about 8.6mm but the 10mm are actually 10.2mm. This makes for quite a difference and having handled the 10mm poles they are so much thicker and stronger than the 9s. Fabric strength and durability again too for so little weight...

The Nammatj and Keron series are for on the move travel, not for basecamping. The saivo, saitaris, and tarra are for basecamping so they have the 8-10 pockets you are looking for

Hi Paul, thank you for your comments and awesome to hear that you enjoyed the video.. I take it you have watched the Hilleberg video ruclips.net/video/9tCSIvYk1zk/видео.html. Apart from that the Hilleberg tunnels with twin vestibules have vertical door walls which really increases the real world length of the tent.. The Jannu too is a bit longer but then also has the sloping rear wall... There is no easy answer. I am hopefully testing a Kaitum shortly so will definalety make comments on its length... ATB Tom

Hi Tom, I have come across you on RUclips researching Hilleberg tents. Great reviews and plenty of good information.. thank you. I was looking for a Nammajt 2 or 3 (possibly a GT) but there is no stock available at present. I can get a Nallo 2 or a 3GT. Have you any experience with these tents?
Hi David, thank you for your positive feedback...Tentes 4 Saisons have a green Nammatj 3 at the moment and I have bought 3 Hillebergs from them and really good... No experience with Nallo s I am afraid... It all depends on the use and also the interior volume is definitely less as the rear pole is shorter in the Nallo. The Nammatj is a little easier to handle in high winds due to the 10mm pole. If you want to camp in exposed locations in the winter then the Nammatj. I have on two occasions been deciding on either and on both went for the Nammatj but that's because I camp frequently in harsh conditions.. I just didn't want to be camping on a summit when it was kicking off and wish I had a stronger tent.. If that's not the type of camping you think you fancy then the Nallo. I hope this helps as I understand its not an easy decision and many people will tell you different things... I’d have to get it shipped to an address there and sent over which is not a problem. I’ve decided to purchase a Nammatj now that I can get them. However I have to decide on whether to opt for the GT version or not.
@@davidperry6018 Not an easy decision.. The Nammatj 3 will have a great vestibule for starters but the GT will be massive.. A fair difference in weight and pack size too.. But if you need or fancy the space then definitely a winner.. Tom
Did you know that the Hilleberg "10mm" are really 10,25 mm and the "9mm" are really 8,64mm ? That mean the difference between them are really 1,6 mm, explain better the difference in strenght.
Another funny thing, my HB Nammatj 3 bought 1997 have the 9mm poles ! I just saw it a few weeks ago because I got the tent out, put it up to check everything since my brother is going to borrow it, wam´nted to make sure everything was ok. Guess if I was surprised to see imprinted on the poles 8,64 mm ! I contacted Hilleberg about it and they confirmed. They didnt have red label tent at that time.

I need a new tent and it's a toss up between one of these and another Quasar. I totally understand the pitching first and the ease and speed of pitching argument, but ultimately, it relies on 4 begs to hold it up, snow loading is a problem and it's noisy. I see why a buddy of mine uses hers in the Arctic, skis at the front, poles at the back and it goes up like an umbrella. But for me on a mountain, it won't work on rocks and it snows a lot more. Both of which, this tent doesn't like. And until I win the lottery, I can't see myself buying one of each! Thoughts?
Hi Dave, dont buy the Nammatj.... You dont want to like the Nammatj so you will look and concentrate on its weaknesses.. Snow loading is not a weakness as its rare that snow will build up on the roof... How many times do you get wet snow with no wind?? If that happens then manage it before it becomes a problem and knock it off from inside the tent. The snow will build up on the sides, front and back of the tent which are all super resistant due to the vertical walls and 10mm poles... the vestibule will handle snow better than a Quasar as its held by straps and not bungie cord which stretches allowing the vestibule to deform and disappear under the load... All tents rely on pegs for wind resistance and you again just need to manage this.. BUT here is the massive BUT.. To say its more noisy in wind is an understatement... It's mad from banging and flapping creating drafts inside too. When you go from an inner first tight fabric to this flappy inner you will hate it just as I did coming from my Tango's and Mountain 25... I couldn't live with my first one so I sold it... Eventually... I thought I would give it another go and same problem. In 40 mph winds it's just really uncomfortable. I camped with a friend one night using the Nammatj and a Jannu side by side and the Jannu was way more comfortable in the wind as its inner is actually very taught.
So I feel a nice new shiny Quasar or Super Quasar would be nice and a very safe bet as you know what you are getting.

Hi Tan, thank you for your comment.. I absolutely did prefer a 70 but now I have moved to a 60 and its more than enough. I think the size alone of your tent has a big influence.. When I am using my one person tent then a 50 would actually do... My argument before for the 70 was that I could just throw everyone in to it and not have to worry an=bout micro packing everything. Now though weight is more important and I saves 1700 7 by moving from an Osprey Argon 70 to a Granite gear Blaze 60... I hope this helps... ATB Tom

Hi Alan, I only have used the Blaze I am afraid.... It's a super well made pack with awesome construction and attention to detail. Simple too which is actually what you need when the conditions are a bit more challenging. Granite gear are also good at responding on Instagram so I suspect that some of these characteristics carry over from pack to pack.... Gregory packs just not as popular here in the UK.... ATB Tom
Hi Tom, I asked you a while ago about recommending a two man four season budget tent, I think one on the list was a vango but I'm not sure. Anyway somehow all the files on my tablet have been wiped. Hi Jonathan, try something like a Vango Halo 200 or 300. They have good space and twin vestibules and are pretty much freestanding which is handy for campsites. Decent enough weather resistance too.. For a little more money look at the Robens Pioneer 2 or 3 EX.... I obviously cant do all your research but if you have a look at some options and let me know I can point out some pros and cons... I agree on the length as well. I'm 6ft 2in and just cannot buy one. I can't justify spending $1000+USD on something that I'm going to struggle fitting in...not worth it. Good review otherwise!
Yeah its a pity.. I hear the Nammatj 3 is the answer.. 200g heavier which is very little but the extra overall height means the real wall is not sloping in so much and you can sleep diagonally too.. I d love to see inside a 3 myself... ATB and thanks for thus very relevant comment.. Tom

Hi Alan, they are a bit different.... Tarra nice with the taught inner which is less flappy and noisy in higher winds... Extremely stable and spacious for two. Nammatj 2 GT for the weight saving and serious vestibule space. Nammatj is very stable too but more flappy due to larger panel size.. My pick would probable be the Tarra but also look at the Keron 3 which has more internal space than both and is 4kg... Never an easy decision and they all have for and against just individual preference.... Let me know which one you go for if you decide to pull the trigger... ATB Tom
I know its hard to do, but I would love to see a side by side in the same spot in hard wind test of two same model Hilleberg tent, one of them with double poles.
Would it be possible to preorder with extra guyline attathment point kind of in the middle of the two short ends, the plece you had a lot of flappings ? or have a skilled seamstress (with experience of slippery silnylon) to do it ?
Hi Bo, at some point when I further test the Nammatj I can show the difference of double poles possibly but the wind really needs to be at least 50mph plus maybe even more to see any difference. regarding the side guy points, No Hilleberg would not be interested I think in this. @@TOMHEANEY100 Thanks for quick respons! I love the way you did the "Soulo black label" versus "Soulored label" ! If I remember right the difference in wind performance was minor once all the guy lines where up. What it didnt show, of course, was the long term durability, so for someone going for a long trip, months long or more, in harsh condition I would definitely go wit black label.
While Iike tunnel tents like this, I cannot stand the noise of all that exposed fabric. They flap like crazy in strong wind and deform a lot. I prefer tents with smaller panels between supporting poles so the tent is more rigid and taut.
Hi, thank you for your comments... Yes this was the reason I sold my previous red Nammatj 2 in favour of more poles to reduce the panel size and hence flapping in the wind.. The problem though for me is the extra weight and most or these designs are inner first pitching.. I also love the quality and durability of this tent.... When the guy lines are tensioned at an angle forwards and backwards they help pull the poles and fabric apart reducing some of the flapping. Also when the wind gets over 50mph all tents are fairly noisy.... ATB and thank you for sharing your experience... Tom
What's the packed size of the tent?
It's quite large because of the overall tent volume and heavy duty strong fabrics which will just not compress as well as lighter ones.. But this tent is for space, strength and durability so pack size has to take a hit .. Hopefully that helps.. best wishes Tom
@TOMHEANEY100 you don't happen to the packed measurements? I'm planning a multimonth motorcycle camping trip so weight doesn't matter as much as durability. But shape & size will matter when getting saddlebags & a top bag.
