    This video shows the breakdown of the Terminator rotating Assembly. Having a fully forged rotating assembly vs cast is what helps the terminator hold over 1,000 HP.
    This video linked below shows a great summary of how the world was reacting as Camaros/FIrebirds would struggle with the terminator, and how the Terminator now chased down Z06s.. all as Forums and RUclips now came forward, and had the ability to broadcast it to the world.This is why we have 707 HP Hellcats, 650 HP Z06s, ZL1s, ZR1s, CTS-Vs etc running around now. The Terminator really did revolutionize the muscle industry. Chevy was basically like "ok we're fucked' and shelved the Camaro for the next 5 years. Even the new Camaro in 2009 was slightly slower than a stock Cobra lol.

    Awesome video! That's why I love these Cobras! No wonder they're so coveted and were made in short supply in their time. Between the forged internals and 2 man teams building the engines, so much care went in to production that it was difficult to produce them in high numbers. I would still take an 03-04 Cobra over the newer GT500's...

    • @dannyjohnsonsgarage
      @dannyjohnsonsgarage  7 лет назад +5

      QuikBrdr83 totally. The GT 500 was a pretty sad product in the fact that Ford went after getting more money rather than providing affordable power-from the man Colletti himself

      Scrun Johnson I agree...Hoping that something synonymous as a "GT500" and a product with the Shelby name on it sells. I love a nice 67 and 69 fastback, but the 03-04's will forever be my favorite mustang and they definitely broke the mold with design and ingenuity for the modern time

      The SVT cobras were so great , that Shelby and Ford could not help it but leave snake badge on the newer mustangs in remembrance of the SVT COBRA. In the book they take a left over 03 cobra engine sold through ford racing and strapped it to a dyno and they made 501hp at 6500 and 461ft-lbs. They so underrated that engine at 390hp. You may have it, if you dont you should check out a 1/4 scale model 03 cobra engine cool stuff. Thanks for the videos this ones old but I just seen it now.

    The crank weighs 52 pounds, I've personally bought and weighed one.
    99-04 cobra had tumble port otherwise known as C heads with different versions. 99- early 03 manufacture dates had DA heads. Mid 03- early 04 had DB heads. Mid- late 04 had DC heads. DC was the final revision of the heads to combat the infamous head tick due to overheating coolant in the head over cylinder number 6,7,8. It can be prevented if the head is still good by the head cooling mod. 93-98 4v mod motor had swirl port otherwise known as B heads. B heads had 2 individual intake ports on the head whereas C heads have 1.
    Ford went with the iron block because they wanted the engine components to all be made in America. Those teksid blocks have been pushed over 1k whp.

I am old enough to remember pre terminator ford lol...when mustang gts had barely over 200 hp to the wheels stock. The regular cobras and mach 1 was pretty good for their time but these things were unreal performance per dollar ratio. To think...an 01 cobras msrp was anout 32 grand...a year and a a half or so later the msrp on these was 34 grand or so...there was no 02 because they took a min to finish developing this car so it became an early 03 model. For that 2 grand extra over the 01 on msrp you got the t56 over the tr3650...you got a fully forged bottom end and a blower to boot...not to mention 17x9 wheels stock vs 17x8 on 01 models...they came with bilstein shocks stock and were half inch lower by comparison....they had dope as fuck for the time electro luminisent gauge faces (01s were white face but not EL glow) plus they had an aluminum flywheel and driveshaft stock...not to mention the other various things that were better than the 01...the hood wing bumpers side skirts all that subtle changes but so mean...it went from Being no comparison with any vette let alone a z06 to being a true contender for a z06 that was 20 grand cheaper. Younger guys just dont understand how amazing these cars were in 03...today with lots of 600-800 horse cars around people get jaded...these were doing that waayyyy before it was the "norm". I remember chevy guys arguing the z06 was better blah blah...i would say hold up a second guys...take a second to think were actually seriously comparing a mustang to a top of the line z06 vette...unreal. before these that was unheard of. Love these and in 2 years im finally gonna go hunting for one. Wanna pay off my daily 280 whp fiesta st first (pretty fast for what it is
      ..weighs 2600 lbs lol). Been wanting one of these since i was 19 when they came out. Ive had 3 89 gts...5 speed...a 94 a 95...a 97 cobra and 03 mach...neverna terminator...yet

    Very interesting video. I find it intriguing what makes an engine so strong. I never realized the 2V rods were so tiny, that's insane. I have a Silverado with the LM7. It's essentially an iron block LS. It has 6 bolt mains, 1 piece front and real main seal, and really nice flowing heads. Hot Rod was able to bolt up some turbos and dyno 1200 horsepower with the stock rotating assembly. I think the only thing they beefed up was the head bolts, they switched to ARP bolts. The engine has over 200 quarter mile runs and countless dyno pulls. It's always been amazing to me they mass produced such a strong engine. Mine will last forever as I run synthetic oil and only pull a trailer once or twice a month.
    Does anyone know how strong the Coyote engines are ?

    • @dannyjohnsonsgarage
      @dannyjohnsonsgarage  7 лет назад

      Robert Smith yes. I own a Silverado as well and it's running strong with 220k+ miles. Good engines, very simple. Coyotes are doing well on numbers because they have high compression ratios and e85 is available, so they can make 1k HP but their rods are powder forged, so still on borrowed time after awhile

I know the pistons are 4032 material instead of 2618. How long do you think the engine will hold on a Ported Eaton with 14 pounds of boost (500rwhp)? Would 100k miles be possible or am I foolish for not going 2618 material? My goal is a 100k mile sealed engine.

      its also kinda interesting that they were actually snapping rods! it shows how hard all that cylinder pressure at relatively low rpm is on everything, I run my stock 5.8l bottom end at 600 ft lbs all day and hear others do more just fine, takes a lot less pressure to make that torque as well as the less violent boost from a turbo instead.

    I've been a huge fan of this car since it debuted in sonic blue at the autoshow. I owned two sn95's and this is the last sn95 I want to own. Thanks for sharing this video. The real reason why the terminator was created because the 01 Cobra was performance matched to tuned up svt focus. John Coletti wasn't so happy about this in his iron fist lead foot. One day I shall own SB Terminator.

The 2014 GT500 is completely different muscle car and the S550 cars are really refined. The SN95's to me are perfect blend of modern and muscle car. YouShouldReallyContemplate Suicide i'm doing a video series on rebuilding the 4.6 L engine. The first thing you will want to do is buy the book how to build a 4.6/54 engine. I am reading through that book now to redo the build step-by-step, so watch my videos on pulling and disassembling the cobra engine and stay tune for the rebuild.

    hello I'm about to start a rebuild on my mach 1 engine and I was wondering how similar the 03/04 mach 1 engines are to the 03/04 cobra engine. Like could I use the forged crank and pistons with the the mach 1 block or would I also have to buy a block. Reason for rebuild is I spun a bearing about a year ago and want to turbo or supercharge the car in the future that's why I'm asking about the forged parts out of the cobra. Thanks

    • @dannyjohnsonsgarage
      @dannyjohnsonsgarage  7 лет назад +1

      Excalibur1009 the Mach 1 has the same cylinder heads and crankshaft (if the car is a 5 speed manual. The automatics came with a cast crank). The block on the Mach 1 is aluminum, but could still hold decent power. The connecting rods and Pistons would need to be changed out to forged ones. The Mach 1 also has a higher compression ratio of 10:1, so your piston selection would be how you would drop the compression ratio lower, which is safer on boost

      Loscar5oh I was actually going to make a video on 5.0 vs terminator engines lol. It's all about goals. Both are great platforms, and without rebuilding the engine, the coyote's biggest advantage is making great power while being n/a with high compression (though it also makes good power with low boost being high compression- you just can't push it too hard, but you don't have to- it makes a lot of power from the high compression ratio). The terminator is also a Goliath for boost and safe to do so at 8.5:1 compression ratio...both great engines

    NICE VIDEO FOR THE KIDS TODAY WHO HAVE NO CLUE WHAT THEY RE DRIVING, nice job. Subscribing,
    Disagree with some of what I watched so far. The the Teksid block was 96-98 only, however there have been a few to slip through and show up in some 99 and 01 cobras, it would be interesting note if the German forged or Kellogg.
    ALSO DISAGREE ABOUT YOUR ASSESSMENT ABOUT THE BLICK CHANGE, THE IRON BLOBK IS USED AT FIRST GLANCE BECAUSE ITS PRECEIVED AS STRONGER, BUT WAS MAINLY COST CUTTING,.....FOR TEKSID ALUMINUM BLOCKS ARE SUPER STRONG. GOOD FOR 1000 HP+ PLUS MUCH MORE DESIREABLE FOR THE WEIGHT SAVINGS. ESP WITH A BLOWER BEING TACked on

    • @dannyjohnsonsgarage
      @dannyjohnsonsgarage  6 лет назад

      Keep in mind if Ford’s official statement for going to iron was for strength, that’s what I would report over an opinion about it being for cost savings. When you consider the aluminum blocks available to ford in 2003-2004 (as found in the Mach 1, which is a WAP block-meaning Windsor assembly plant), the iron block is stronger than what they had. The Teksid blocks came from italy and were heat treated and tanked, and without that process Ford did not have an aluminum option that would be stronger. Also, since teksid blocks appeared in 99 and also a handful of 01 Cobras, it would be incorrect to claim it was 96-98 only

      Edward Thayer the teksid blocks were manufactured from Italy via the same company that builds the blocks for Ferrari. They are heat treated and strong enough to hold just about anything you'd put to them. The WAP (Windsor, Ontario plant) aluminum blocks are a different story, but still okay. Interestingly enough, the aluminum blocks have 4 bolt main cap studs vs the iron with only 2

      Morbid SVT COBRA I'll have to look at the specifics, but I believe the sn95s had the b heads and somewhere between when and the new edge they went to c heads, but the Cobra/Mach 1s had a revision (likely to accommodate the blower and flow better) so you can do an eaton swap on a 99/01 but it needs some kind of adapter

    • @Karadon1969
      @Karadon1969 7 лет назад +2

      The 99 and 01 Cobras did have C heads. In 99 if you remember ford had an issue with the cobras not making the power they stated due to: restrictive intake manifold (which was a new design), heating issues around cylinders 6-8, and a exhaust that was too restrictive. Ford has a TSB out for this and fixed these Cobras at no cost to the owners. This was obviously fixed for the 2001 cobra. Also you can do an eaton swap on a 99/01 Cobra because of the head design. You cannot use a terminator eaton on a 96-98 without a kit (if one exists) or extensive modifying. The head you showed in the video @Scrun actually looks in good shape. Is the owner going to get the coolant crossover mod done during the rebuild? I would recommend it.

    • @dannyjohnsonsgarage

      Vincent Pampanin They have a similar DOHC layout but are not the same. The Mach 1 standard transmission car (5 speed) has the cobra crank and heads but not the cobra connecting rods or Pistons. The compression ratio on the cobra is 8.5:1 whereas the Mach 1 and marauder have 10:1.
      The automatic transmission Mach 1 engine as well as the marauder do not have the cobra forged 8 bolt crank, so they only share cylinder heads with the cobra. The cobra has an iron block and the Mach 1 and marauder have aluminum blocks.

      Thank you. Perhaps it was heat “tanked”? Does that sound familiar? Of course this is all second hand information, so thank you for your patience and understanding

      At the end of the heat treat process the blocks come out of the hot oven and dropped into a water tank to shock the blocks. It's quite a site to see, lot's of steam and boiling water shooting out of the water tank as a dozen blocks drop in. I really like your videos!👍👍 I have a 03 azure blue Mach1 and love it! Thanks again!😁😁👍👍

      Doug's Guitar Lounge Would you happen to know what makes te teksid blocks better? I heard they are much stronger from some process, but it must be something different than explained it appears

    • @dougsguitarlounge3617
      @dougsguitarlounge3617 5 лет назад

      I don't know why the teksid blocks are better, I have never seen one in person, but from the pictures I have seen the wap block looks better than the teksid block. But like I said I haven't seen one in person. So I have no way to check casting hardness and thickness.

    • @dougsguitarlounge3617
      @dougsguitarlounge3617 5 лет назад +1

      I found out the difference between the teksid block and the wap . The wap is 8lbs lighter so the casting is thinner in the valley and upper main web. When approaching 1000hp the blocks are pron to crack there. Ford corrected this in the 05 and newer wap blocks. So the 05 and newer wap block should be as good as a teksid. The wap block has a better main cap design than the teksid also. Keeo up the great videos!👍👍😎

    How much would it cost to build your own cobra engine

    • @dannyjohnsonsgarage
      @dannyjohnsonsgarage  5 лет назад

      The machine work is where you get hit hard. Plan on $10k. You’re better off buying one from a wrecked car for $6k or the whole drivetrain for $10k-$12k

      JoshW817 easy $10-$15k as you probably know when it comes to engine building. I'm doing my best to help my buddy out- but that's more proof on how nice it was to have a built engine from the factory. Too bad this one leaned out. It had plenty of life left in it

    So here is what I got from this vid....use the right gas for this car and basically you have a bulletproof engine capable of obliterating anything made today. GOT IT.

    All cobra cars had 8 bolt cranks

      King Jerel thank you. I was pretty sure that was the case, but didn't want to make the claim. Not sure on the 93-95 5.0 Cobras/Cobra R.

      Danny Johnson I'm sure about the pushrod era but all 4.6 cobra cars did and the aviator, marauder and mach 1 engines did as well..I was watching thinking I hope he doesn't say mahle poisons pistons lol but you you know your shit!! The zolner pistons were the weak link and the back two cylinders failed due to the coolant passage issues that I think were revised in the 2004 year.. You can do the crack pipe mod to remedy this and finally I think the high-speed 6 gear runs made them fail too bc the 6th gear ratio was so tall

      King Jerel yeah, long highway pulls were definitely not wise. I'd like to do the cooling mod on the heads if I remove the Trans and have a nice straight shot. Just as a tid bit of info, the automatic Mach 1s, marauders, and even the aviator had a 6 bolt non, forged crank. That was the only disadvantage. Welcome to the channel

    I thought the teskid block was the strongest one 🙃🤔

    • @dannyjohnsonsgarage
      @dannyjohnsonsgarage  5 лет назад

      For being aluminum it’s about equal- but ford no longer had the teksid block available in 2003 as they were phased out in 2001 to be replaced by the windsor assembly plant (WAP) aluminum blocks. Those also won’t really have problems under 1,000hp, but not being heat treated like the teksid was could have experienced some flex

      They didn’t call it the terminator for nothing. I have a friend at work who said his best friend had a 02 Trans Am and literally cursed and threw the magazine down when he saw a pulley put the cobra at 450rwhp. Cool story

      Lol I raced my friends 2016 Mustang GT he paid around 50,000 or so for. I beat him with my Cobra he was not very happy at all. I just have a few bolt ons and cat back

    If its SOOO good of an engine, why stop making them and stop using them on new fords? Look at the ls on chevy..

    • @dannyjohnsonsgarage
      @dannyjohnsonsgarage  6 лет назад +1

      Jessi Gutierrez 1. As mentioned, Ford did not have the necessary parts available and went with better aftermarket parts on a joint venture. Once the terminator was completed, ford used their own parts that are cheaper (and not as strong) on the GT500. 2. The LS engine has evolved into many variants (LS1, LS2, LS3, LS7, LSA, etc.) so it’s not to say the LS hasn’t changed just like the terminator engine has also evolved into the 5.8L trinity and the 5.2L Voodoo V8.
