      @@bkorven How reliable or unreliable is this engine? Is it better than Audi 4.2 TDI?

    • @bkorven
      @bkorven  2 месяца назад

      @@Ministry_0f_TruthSorry about my late reply.
      Some known problems:
      - Failing glow plug module
      - High contamination in the intake from EGR
      - Engine mounts wearing quickly
      - Head gaskets needing replacement usually after 250k-350k km
      Other than that, a very reliable engine on the whole. I don't know much about the reliability of the 4.2 TDI, but I do know that the timing chain is located at the rear of the engine. I.e. the whole transmission needs to be removed from the engine, and the engine removed from the car, to replace 😅

    Hi bkorven, I have to say you have an amazing V8 machine! Love the sound! I drive C30 AMG (stock) and I am wondering if u would advice any mods to increase the power and sound or rather keep it in an original state. Regards Lukas

    • @bkorven
      @bkorven  10 лет назад +6

      Thank you! Wow, a C30 CDI AMG, nice. Does it come with a DPF? If so, I would personally replace it with straight piping and then remap the ECU. That should improve your exhaust sound, but it would also make you able to make more power, since the DPF is quite restrictive to exhaust flow.
      You should probably be able to put out around 300bhp, with DPF delete and a proper ECU-software. Just make sure you have the needed software at hand, before you delete the DPF.

    • @bkorven
      @bkorven  9 лет назад

      If you keep the stock exhaust system in one piece you can easily swap back to it again. And the ECU-software can be restored to default at any time as well.

  • @bkorven
    @bkorven  10 лет назад +5

    Lucifero Caduto Having the gear set in C or S won't make a very big difference(rather have it in S for more easily keeping lower gears), but in order to have full acess of the power going to the wheels you need to put the car into "Dyno Mode", which will fully turn off all electronic assistance including ESP. Then it's just hit it and go :)
    Even if you click the "ESP off" button at the center console, ESP won't be fully turned off. One won't be able to make a proper burnout.

    • @EnricoRomanoWeb
      @EnricoRomanoWeb 10 лет назад

      I had the dubious .... even the drift are 'controlled' by the ECU and void. But there is a way to deprive the ESP completely?

    • @bkorven
      @bkorven  10 лет назад +2

      Lucifero Caduto You must enter "Dyno Mode". If you have a W211 like me, you do this by clicking the "reset button" 3 times quickly, with the engine off and the key turned to first position. That will open a hidden meny, where you can scroll with the arrows on your steering wheel down to something like "ESP dynometer test". Toggle on/off with +/- on the steering wheel.
      Remember to turn off "dyno mode" manually, settings won't reset by restarting the car.

    As for the 7G-tronic I heard about some upgrades available for them to increase their performance and better handle higher levels of torque and power...for example Weistec Engineering is a company which offers many improvements for Mercs in general but their TCU upgrade and so called "bullet proof" transmission really caught up my attention. What do you thing of them( in general ,Weistec was only an example) or have you ever considered as a future investment? I ask you because your E-class really pushes to extreme the 7G with it's truck-like torque values :))

    • @bkorven
      @bkorven  9 лет назад +1

      Reinforcing the transmission does sound like a reasonable mod with this amount of torque, but to my surprise the transmission is handling it perfectly fine. I've been driving at this stage for a long time and for a long distance, there are no signs of harm. My TCU-software is upgraded(by Kleemann), but I'm not able now to tell the difference in performance, I didn't really pay attention right at the moment and it's been a long time since. Hehe yeah I've really stretched the limits on this gearbox!

      Check if the head gaskets has been changed. I haven't had any problems myself, but have heard failing head gaskets to be common with higher milage. Take it for a proper test drive, and note the coolant level before and after. Smell the coolant expansion tank, if you don't mind being a little weird 😂 A smell of fuel is a sign of failing head gasket.
      Otherwise I'd just check the overall condition of the car. I don't know of alot of problems with these engines.

      A close to identical exhaust system can likely be built at a local shop close to where you're at in Germany, Jüterbog or Malterdingen(or go to Denmark). Give Kleemann a call or send them a mail for details.

      Hi! Thank you!
      This is hard to give a short answer to, so warning for a long reply! I will paste a little from a previous reply by me to someone with a similar set of questions.
      The car has been more or less free from issues. The biggest issue that has happened with this car was when AirMatic failed. One of the air cushions lost pressure, and that was very pricy to fix. Has happened to this car once (during the last 13 years). Another periodic issue, although a much lesser one, is the cylinder pre-heat system acting up. Sometimes the glow plug indicator light comes on, and sometimes it dissappears again. It just means cold starts are sometimes a bit rough, and the problem should not be hard to fix. This seems to be a common issue with these engines.
      Another thing good to know is that these engines are infamous for having the intake manifold and intake ports severely contaminated by soot, that sticks to the surfaces. This seems to be unavoidable with the EGR in operation. An EGR delete will prevent this problem.
      All in all, this car has been very reliable, and I love it! Milage just passed 200k km.
      When buying one I'd say try to look after what options you personally value. These cars could come with many different extra options/specs from factory. Panoramic roof, for example, is a rare but very nice option some of these came with. Paddle shifters is another very rare but also (to me) nice option. Avantgarde? Sport package? Harman/Kardon extended sound system? There are some stuff to consider, as I mentioned.

    @Albages11 10 лет назад

    I only hace one question, and I'm not trying to be mean... but what's the point of having a diesel if u are going to tune it like you do? anyway, your car looks awesome and also does ur pipe sound... but shouldn't it be better just getting a petrol engine?

    • @bkorven
      @bkorven  10 лет назад +4

      It's a good question ;) But there's no short answer to it...
      Yeah most people would not choose diesel for performance, and that's probably mainly because they just don't associate diesel with performance. Also, most people are obviously determined that their diesel powered car could never have exciting exhaust sound. Absolutely not true :D
      Would it be better to get the equivalent petrol engine over this diesel engine? That would be the E500 5.0 N/A V8. It has got 388hp/530nm, and should be faster than a stock E420 CDI(314hp/730nm). With a simple chiptune/software upgrade only, the power of the 420 CDI easily rises to 370hp, while not much would be gained with the 500, perhaps another 10-15hp. Add proper exhaust mods to both cars and they can now be expected to have about the same amount of power, somewhere around 410-420hp.
      Thing is though, with 414hp as I have in my E420 CDI, I can still get as low consumption as 7L/100km, while cruising gently. I don't think even a stock E500 could be close to that.
      So with the tuning I've done I get loads of power, a nice growly exhaust sound, and unchanged or perhaps even improved consumption on long distance trips. You could hear the potential in exhaust sound of this car when it was stock, but it was soooo quiet! Now do you see the point of the tuning I've done? This 420 CDI is perfect for tuning! And this is not just any diesel engine, I don't know what you're compairing it to, but I wouldn't bother tune a dull 4-cyl diesel engine.
      Another very crucial point is the power band. The E500 does not feel quick at all (in comparisson to the E420 CDI) unless you keep the engine over 4.5k rpm. It's a short power band, so that's where you'll want it if you want the most out of the engine. With the E420 CDI it does not really matter if you're at 3k rpm or 1.5k rpm, you'll be surprised! It has a very wide usable power band. In other words, since you don't do kickdowns all the time in the real world street driving, an E420 CDI feels much quicker, if you see what I mean. Such brutal force.
      The E500 has more tuning options on the after market though, since it's more popular. There are for example complete supercharger conversion kits!
      But one thing I highly value with the E420 CDI is that it's so uncommon.
      I could go on...
      Anyways, my whole point is, It's not as easy as just to say it would be better to get a petrol engine. There are pros and cons. Sometimes it's just a matter of preference.
