      If you want to do an actual accurate comparison to see how the cab's are affecting the tone you would need to use the same to speakers in each cab. Just saying! Part 2? lol

      @@jamescassidy4045 agree...also he would need to use a microphone thats back away from the speaker cabinet. he has the speakers close mic'd. which makes this video really just a speaker comparison.

      I think the guys shopping ampheads and speaked boxes need to know what it sounds like 6 to 10 ft away with a blastbeat and a bass cab going... one gut sitting in a room by himself with a mic 2inches from a speaker might as well have a stereo10w or a digital pedal. So if I take my horizontal recto and stand it up vertically it will sound 90 degrees off?
      We only mic one speaker live even if it’s upside down
      In the studio anything goes
      Cone, off cone
      One or two mics for me r121 and sm57 plus 1 room mic I’ve been liking
      AKG C 414 XL II lately but the Manley reference are an interesting change up
      3 tracks then performance doubled
      For 2 more tracks for each guitar
      And a DI for reamping
      Lots to play with
      And all tracked as dry as possible

    I could tell a difference, but I think it would have been a more successful comparison if you played the same riff in both cab one after the other without discussion in between, because by the time you got to the 2nd cab after talking during setting up the horizontal cab, I had forgotten what the vertical cab sounded like. If you A/B them, you can hear the contrast much better.

    • @ZackSeifMusic
      @ZackSeifMusic  Год назад

      Glad that you enjoyed the video! There are so many factors to consider, but at the end of the day the cabinet itself and the speakers matter just as much if not more than the actual amplifier that you use. Most high gain amps can sound similar with the proper speaker cabinet, mic placement, and speaker itself.

      @@ZackSeifMusic I would love to hear a comparison between a vertical 2x12 and an oversized 4x12 rectifier cab. I have a 2x12 vertical and am always wondering what I'm missing out on without a 4x12.

    • @ZackSeifMusic
      @ZackSeifMusic  Год назад

      @@jones786 A good amount of low end and low mids, however those frequencies would always be cut in studio and also live to make room for the bass and kick. It does sound and feel really good on stage so because you have more surface area and more “air” being sent your way because it’s a bigger speaker enclosure pushing sound waves at a higher volume in your direction.
      However I do find it rather impractical to have a 412 live these days unless you have a road crew or play venues large enough to justify the space and stage volume. Its nice to have one in a home studio just to get the tone and feel of a 412, but at the end of the day you’re still only mic’ing a single speaker for the most part maybe two. It’s definitely a personal preference thing, I just prefer the form factor and the tone of a 212.

    I preferred the toke from the horizontal.
    That being said it’s the difference o have heard with 4x12 slant cab marshals vs straight marshall cabs.
    Slant cabs are always brighter .
    I’ve spoken to a few people who believe it’s just that the speaker is slanted towards your hear so that’s why you believe it’s brighter but videos like this one and others prove it’s just the build.
    Even if you close mic it will still sound brighter, same goes for differences in front ported cabs and cabs of different designs, even if you close mic, the difference is still there in recording .
    I think naturally one would eq to each cab . I enjoy my slant 1960 a. I think the extra top end makes it a lip more dynamic and not flat . I think a straight cab with an open back option can help close the bridge though .

I thought I was getting ready for a massage... :) just a quick tip if that's ok if your comparing the sounds possibly run 2 tracks on your recording equipment Track a Vertical cab Track B Horizontal. Record 10 seconds of clean crunch and single note lead. Drop the 2 tracks onto your editing software. Play back the recorded sample you can jump to track A then Track B to compare, with clean repeat process on crunch then repeat on lead single notes.I found it easier to demonstrate and compare the differences in short sound samples back to back rather than stringing them all together then doing the same with the other cab. Yes I did notice the vertical was very tight possibly still needed a few more hours to break in. Thanks for the demo Mesa Boogie is such nice gear very expensive in Australia.

    I realize this video is a couple of years old, but I have some constructive criticism:
    I would have preferred to hear the clean channel tones back-to-back, then the crunch tones back-to-back, then lead tones back-to-back. That would have made it much easier to discern the differences in tones (rather than clicking back and forth).
    Also, the elevator music was unnecessary (or at least a little too loud) and made it more difficult to hear what you're saying.

I have played the SLO cab and loved it (bought the SLO 30 sitting on top and figured the VHT 2x12 would sound fine with it), so I’m finally taking the dive. One thing I’ve done more on horizontal cabs that makes the biggest difference is switch speakers. Before you ditch a cab, try pairings of V30 & G12H/T/H Anniversary/Redback/Greenback, etc., be sure to ohm match too. Why does the horizontal sound so much better? Is it the age of the speakers? Very different. If it is the age, then I assume the vertical will get better as well.

    • @ZackSeifMusic

      Speaker age does matter, as does the dimensions of the cabinet itself. It’s also personal preference at the end of the day as well.

      i totally agree, the sound was much crispy and clear you could definitely hear the full range of sounds in the horizontal versus the vertical is much gainy.

    You keep every time the mic directly at front of one speaker, I doubt or you can hear any difference. You should keep the mic at least 1 meter or more from the middle of the cabinets to hear the real difference.

    Mesa cabs I have owned many are very stiff sounding to me because of how they are built..
    I dont like the mesa horizontal cab at all, its bloated as hell and doesn not have good mids.. Thats my opinion when having one, and long sold it.. If you mic them into a mix or live you likely wont tell much difference, im speaking how they sound in a room.

    • @ZackSeifMusic
      @ZackSeifMusic  Год назад

      What are the things I like most about speaker cabinets, is that you have so many options in terms of size, construction, wood and materials, the speakers themselves, and microphone options as well as where you place them. You can get drastically different results just by changing one of those components.
