@Leely Moonstar great stuff. It's better than tip toeing around situations like James said. As long as its constructive truths, there's no issues from our part, but how it's recieved is always the problem.
HI James, love these new videos of you explaining and breaking down the work of other stylists. I am a hair instructor and I actually play your videos in class for my students, we all enjoy your videos so much, very informative and educational. You are amazing at what you do, positive and brilliant too. It's always great to get positive constructive feedback, it helps us all improve and better our skills. Thanks for providing us with such awesome education and sharing your knowledge and skills with the world.
To 'critique' something simply means to provide a detailed analysis of the work produced and is a common teaching tool. So, yes, very important in any field of work! To 'criticise' is to express disapproval and, unlike 'critique', is not really designed to teach or be helpful, lol. So, I totally agree with what you're saying at start of video. X
Two of my favorite hairstylists in the world!!! It would've been great if there were someone there to critique my work in my earlier days starting out in this industry. I wish videos like this existed back then. I always enjoy it and looking forward to your next video. Thank you!
Wonderful John doubt I am super pleased I fall into your two favourite stylists in the whole wide world! I feel very fortunate throughout my entire career I’ve had people critique me and it has shaped the status that I am today
I love Sanja’s work as much as I love yours! Both of you have help me improve my skills ❤️ thank you for all the time you dedicate to all of us stylist!!!
I really learnt a lot from her. She is an amazing teacher and she is highly skilled and talented. I'd like to thank you for explaining these techniques. You also do an amazing job.
Very much how I expected your critiquing and commentary. Sanja has sometimes added visual drawings of sectionings..and in most vids, I seem to have an eyebrow raise, smile and an "aha". Thanks for these, James...always appreciated.
Hi James👋 I have not thought once that your critics have been criticism. What I love most about you and your comments is how honest they are! Thank gawd finally someone has put into actual words what NOT TO DO! Finally someone who has called out what is “not great technique”, that these stylists should already know... do they forget or do they just not care??? I’ve seen over and over beginners doing exactly what the person before them did and it’s not always the best way of doing things. Having correct technique is everything, knowing the rules first and following the rules first is everything. “Other ways” come later but that’s not what general public should witness as first rate especially when going in for services like that of Missy Sue’s or Guy Tang’s or the other guy who’s name I’ve forgotten. S
im so glad you critique the work in this videos, its very helpful and im learning so much, please continue doing this in your videos, the scissors over comb i knew i was doing it wrong , i was trying to do the comb at the same speed as the scissors lol now i know where i was wrong, thanx James;-)all this little things make such a difference, and i agree, its no talking in Sanja's videos, so i would not notice certain things that you pointed out, she is so good with her work! keep up the great work and looking forward to your next video, you are a great teacher James;-)
Thank you James for this video ! Sanja is my fave female hairstylist! She has a same kind of technique like you probably thats why :) Looking forward to the next Sanja / James reacting video Xx
Great video! This haircut is amazing! I agree that critique is so important to be the best we can be. Related to that is good coaching. You can't coach someone without offering critique. Critique is not saying a piece of art is bad or good, or the creator is bad or good. That is a subjective opinion. It can be simply breaking down and explaining the elements that went into making a thing. Sometimes there are *problematic* elements at play that should be examined so we're not just consuming art being presented to us (in this case, a haircutting demonstration video) passively and blindly. There's no need to be offended by critique if it's offered in good faith. At the end of the day, no one is obligated to accept all critique either. (Hopefully, it's given careful consideration first). I've been given critique that I need to be faster, book more clients in a day, double book, etc. At this point, I think I've done all I can do to be efficient as possible with my timing from helpful advice; however, I am on the autism spectrum and that fast-paced, ping-pong scheduling does not work for me. If I followed their advice I'd be terrible at my job, my confidence would be shattered, and I'd just quit. But if I do things my way (the "wrong" way), I have good results, happier clients, happier me, and I'm still making money.
Thank you for a lovely comment Trisha yes you are exactly right there are points when critique/coaching doesn’t always help I think half the art of coaching somebody is knowing when your journey together has finished and they need a new coach/mentor to take them further on their journey no matter where we are in our journey I think we can all do with somebody to point out how we can improve we can’t always see ourselves as we get older as well we can take the critique with a grain of salt should we so wish
I'm not a trained hairdresser, but am professional in other fields - and I find your teaching excellent. I've done amateur hairdressing all my life, and with just that level of experience, I can certainly follow what you're saying and understand WHY you emphasise certain things. Just saying. X
Thank you very much I’m very pleased you enjoyed the videos even though you’re not a hairdresser it always surprise meal and non-hairdressers enjoy these videos I say non-hairdressers obviously you do it as an Amateur so it’s really nice to be able to help all kinds of hairdresser not just professional 👍🏻👍🏻
Great critique James, I liked it. Yes you are right the industry lacks lot of these constructive criticism. That’s bc we are too divas when we do our best and $$ start coming in 😆 like to show it off to others many don’t like to share either. In make up is the contrary , artists love to share tips and tricks. But w. hair is different!
Agree James you are really the best ,we all love you so much and your very appreciated most definitely are very talented thanks again for your videos love them !!! 💜💜
You are right to critique , some Hairstylists have learned to become very sensitive to any kind of critique that is given. I wouldn't go around and tell a hairstylist about what they do wrong infront of others, this can be embarrassing for some , and I wouldn't critique a hairstylist ,unless I was in a position to do so like you are James. We all make mistakes and we learn from them over time. If someone criticizes your work, go look at videos like this and see if you are doing something that could be corrected and correct it in future cuts.
Thank you very much the curious hairstylist glad you enjoy it just to let you know I did get your email and I tried to respond to you twice but for some reason it will not send the email
hello again my favorite hair dresser :) i was thinking the other day. and i came to an understanding that changed my perspective on hair cutting. in beauty school it was really hard for my to understand what actually happens to each hair when i use Layering , Graduation, Over directing, or using finger angle, Elevation, 90/45 degrees. it was really confusing because there were so many terms that made me think that each of them is actually a whole different separate method of hair cutting. yesterday i was laying in my bed thinking, and i came to a conclusion that all of those terms could be merged into one which is "Over direction" hair cutting is all about using the laws of Over direction to create a heavy or light shape. in some cases we over-direct using vertical sections to achieve the shape in some we use diagonal or horizontal to achieve the shape. 90 degrees or 45 degrees are also forms of over direction that we apply to each section. the meaning of Over-direction = thinking how to build lighter or heavier shape in to a certain direction , by increasing or decreasing the distance that each hair has to travel to reach the cutting point. Head shape= it is just a parameter that we must think about because it affects the amount of over direction. what do you think ?
Well I’ve just read through this comment and you are exactly right you’ve had an epiphany when it comes to what happens to Hair when you cut it thing angle and over direction determine the shape and conversely over direction can be responsible for the entire shape irrelevant of using any specifics so yes you’re absolutely right congratulations
@@TheLifeOfHair thanks for the reply :) just a small question: as i see it, finger angle is just carving into the hair, the pattern that over direction may have created alone. most of the shapes that finger angle creates can also be created by correct over direction. why people are using finger angle to create their shapes anyways? my guess is that it is easier for them to imagine the end result and the shape of the haircut by using finger angle. or is it more than that?
Very much depends on the haircut you are trying to achieve think angle determines things like certain graduations for instance if you’re cutting a traditional graduated bob with a 45° finger angle then it is both a combination of over direction and finger angle that creates the shape if you are talking about long layers haircuts like then you do not you need to use finger angle quite so much you can use over direction to create concave there are many circumstances where a combination the two are required to make a shape For instance this haircut the finger angle is square but the over direction is to the previous section so it is important for the shape to keep the thing angle Square as it is building up wait in the corners and the other direction is building a weight travelling towards the front hairline hence the dramatic length in the Fringe
I think you’ve been very kind. If someone of any trade with is going to make a video, they have a responsibility to follow safety and manufacturer guidelines.

Yes she didn’t actually cut that area during the wet cutting phase she just resection it off I think it gives you a good marker to besection of the crown area as I said in the video scenario with a lot of movement as I’m sure you are aware. She just ended up dropping it all down and cutting the top dry that is obviously how she saw best to deal with the natural hair growth patterns
