    Introduction (from DickStaub.com):
This is Dick Staub and today we're bringing you a rebroadcast of an interview I conducted with Rich Mullins last April. You know, at the time, no one would have thought that just a few months later Rich would be taken from us to be with God. I bring you this interview with Rich in hopes that it will remind you of Rich's very real walk with God, his love for people, his honesty, and transparency. And I know that Rich's hope would be that his life and music would prod you to a deeper and more rough-edged walk with the God who Rich liked to call "awesome." And now, a rebroadcast of the Rich Mullins interview from last April.

so precious... just met this man through his music this year. He says more about the love of God and his need for a savior than anyone I have ever heard. Thank you for sharing this amazing interview.
Hope to see the movie soon.

What I loved most about Rich was that he never tried being Christian, famous, wise or any of that. He just was what he was. He didn't dwell on the past and he didn't fuss about planning the future. He lived unashamed in the present and to me that is truly living a life of faith.

Thank you from the depths of my soul for providing this recording to be heard.
These lessons from Mullins that I have been blessed to become aware of have inspired me to wake up and live again.
His influence in my spirit has given me courage to stand up and be more than a screen door!

I will wholeheartedly agree. I don't know if Rich had much use for uptight religious folks or gabbers and grabbers.Thats what made his teachings so practical and real...impregnated with truth

Rich had no real intentions of becoming a Catholic. There were things about it that he appreciated but also Biblical differences he could not get past. He was into being a Christian, not being in a particular Religious denomination.

@@michala96 No, Christy, that is not accurate.. Rich actually made plans to make a general Confession of his entire life the following day 9/20/97 with Fr. ( now Archbishop) Paul Coakley and to make his public statement of faith and Confirmation and First Holy Communion with Fr. Matt McGuinness the next day 9/21/97. A general Confession is required of an already baptized Christian who is entering the Catholic Church, and it is NEVER done unless that person is actually becoming a Catholic! I can assure you, that after doing so, there is no chance that Rich Mullins, who ardently desired to receive the Body and Blood of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist would have been able to wait two weeks before receiving Holy Communion for the first time. He was already a committed Catholic in his heart! (And by the way, that "very good friend" that you are referring to was his producer, Jim Chaffee, who conducted a Presbyterian Memorial service for him in Nashville, asked everyone at that service to KNEEL out of respect for the church that Rich was entering. Even HE knew that Rich was indeed, becoming a Catholic.) Read for yourself richmullinspirituality.blogspot.com/p/letter-from-father-matt.html

@@michala96 The friend to whom you are referring was well aware of Rich's plans to enter the Catholic Church, and she has never claimed that he was not. He told his friends, his producer, even the Kruse family with whom he was staying the last three weeks of his life that he was converting to Catholicism. Despite what you may have heard, his relatives knew that he was converting, although some of them were opposed to it. His first cousin told me this herself!

@@alphb58 Actually, only two days. He had an appointment to make a General Confession of his life on Saturday, the day after his death, and he was planning to be Confirmed into the Catholic Church and make his First Holy Communion the very next day, Sunday, Sept. 21, 1997.

I've never heard anyone say they didn't like a song they wrote and recorded unless they're speaking in terms of wanting to re-do some aspect, such as the arrangement or mix. That's not the same as not liking their own song.

Rich was very pro-life and was actually involved in the pro-life movement. I believe, from what he said during this interview, that his issue was with movements themselves... especially in the church... and how people often attach themselves to a movement because there is something else missing in their lives... and so they involve themselves in movements that are emotionally charged. In this case, he's talking specifically about cults, the pro-life movement, and liturgical movements... but he could have just as easily been talking about any kind of political or religious movement. Here is the full quote:
"Well I-I, you know I-I, the-the-the big word for me is cynicism. It just seems like people have despaired of a lot. And there-there are two reactions to that. One is to, you know, like I-I-I basically feel like the enlightenment has played itself out. And it’s uh, it’s done all the damage it can possibly do. I mean, I don’t know how much more damage the idea of that logic is kind of supreme is going to do, but I think, you know, we got to the bottom of logic, and-and it doesn’t really cover-cover the material. And so people have either uh, they-they either escape it by uh, becoming uh, increasingly sensual so they’re more, you know-in the church which is what I’m more familiar with. I mean, you know-you look at all these movements where there’s a lot of emotional ecstatism and-and uh-uh, you look at the-the-the pro-life movement and you kind of go, man, this is all about creating a safe little environment for you and your wife and your gloriously perfect children. Um, you look at um, there’s a large return of people to-to uh, a more liturgical-going back to liturgical-stuff. Uh, and-and when I talk to a lot of people who are involved in that, it-it-it’s purely the-the sensual drive. It-it-it has everything in the world to do with the good feeling they get when they sit through a good liturgy. And you kind of go man, there’s great things about a good liturgy. There’s great things about a solid family. There’s great things about uh, having an emotional, experiencing your faith emotionally, and all that. But uh, all these things are-are kind of-of a way of saying it doesn’t really make sense so how can I feel it? And-and then the, you know, then you see the-the rise of cults and you kind of go, I-I think people are just kind of-we’ve-we’ve become so doubtful that we’re kind of going, man, how do we-life is full of uncertainty, which it is. Um, how do we get around that?"

    • @amyschlegel1180

It is a bizarre statement, since almost everyone I know who is pro-life couldn't care less about those things. What they do care about is saving the lives of innocent pre-born children and helping pregnant women and mothers in every way they can. Rich knew that, since he himself was very pro-life. I believe that he was talking primarily about so -called pro-life politicians, many of whom are not really pro-life. I also think that Rich was somewhat negatively influenced by Brennan Manning and some of his followers, who were fairly liberal and who tried to find ways to excuse their own wishy-washy attitude about the pro-life movement!
To his credit, despite sometimes sticking his foot in his mouth, Rich was pro-life in both word and deed. He took part in a number of rescues at the infamous Tiller abortion clinic in Wichita, he gave a concert in support of those who participated in the "Summer of Mercy" rescues, and he gave many concerts to support and benefit pro-life causes.

He misread the scripture or forgot it. Money isn't the root of all evil. The LOVE of money is the root of all evil. People need to keep more than 10% to pay bills and hopefully retire one day. Health care costs alone can wipe out a person's savings. Do we just say, "That's fine, I'll go untreated, then die and be in heaven sooner?" Strange.
