In every form of society, some groups are disenfranchised. When a society errs on the side of individualism, the weakest or most inactive people are marginalized. When it errs on the side of collectivism, the strongest, most able and driven people are thwarted. Try to imagine which of these groups is more likely to fight back and win. If history has taught (some of) us anything, it is that this is a false dichotomy; that all extremes are horrific. By far, the greatest share of evil in the world comes from overcorrection -- people assuming that, if one thing is so bad, its opposite must be good. And, so, the pendulum of history swings, from one catastrophe to another. Each generation overcompensating, raising its children and forming its institutions in a reactionary fervor, only to wind up in the same situation which originally inspired the backlash which it was lashing back against. Until we can compromise and find a middle way, this will continue indefinitely. We should take Hegel's synthesis and not Kierkegaard's either/or as our guiding model.

The most individualistic societies in the world are the ones to which most migrants are desperate to move to. That should tell us something, whether we like it or not.

You can have an I attitude and still care for Your community I always thought of individualism as you being from the group you think differently you don't exist to please everything that group the group wants rather you help your fellow man on a individual level I don't wanna have A hive mind and think the group I prefer freethinking

Well, would been nice to hear your thoughts about men compared to women. If the women tend to pick collectivism, and that they move a society vs this... the more power they get.

The word was at ideological level not long ago in China and former Soviet Union. And it had been so in the 1920s in Europe as indicated in the video. In academic world, it is interesting if anyone holds your idea about collectivisim nowadays. Both individualism and collectivism have lost their ideological implications in the East and the West. Self in science now is devided into two categories: independent self and interdependent self. The latter is collectivism at individual level roughly speaking. More than half of the world's population today are killing their sense of self than those not, unfortunately in your standard. But you are not alone in having the impression that collectism is not positive, even science got it right very recently and scientists take for granted that the general public know their findings as quickly as they publish them. In my country, lots of ordinary people think individualism is equivalent to selfishness and is morally wrong, which is totally a misception and inaccurate as a matter of fact.

individualism kills the sense of responsibility towards others (while we live in a society, all we do affects others)
Yeah, if we take the definitions as this man explains, both ways have pros and cons
Maybe a middle point would be better
