Excellent video production. I am going to apply this chipping / rust technique to my current rat rod bicycle build. Thanks!
Its always fun to comeback and re watch these videos! Thank you for sharing it!
that is fascinating thanks for sharing - subbed 👍
Thanks so much.

Truly love your videos, best tutorial vids on youtube, I've watched this particular one multiple times, love it.
Keep up the great work!
Awesome work!!! I especially like the airbrushing through the gauze technique.
+Phayzyre105 Thanks. We'll do a proper video on that technique soon.
Scale War Machines Please do, I cant wait to watch it!
Did this video ever make it? I'd love to check it out!
@@Chainmailninja ruclips.net/video/pPIYONJAKt4/видео.html For you or anyone else looking, I had to track it down as well.
@@Anthony-bs5ov Thanks!!
Looks like it should, alot of work but the result looks real!
Skill level 100 ! So f'ing awesome. Looks amazing.
From one miniaturist to another, one Giant (but very small) high five! Superb work, bravo.
Wow I had no idea the salt technique was a thing, this can save so much time
Do worry if the air dislodges some of the salt. I don't know yet for sure, but I suspect little salt grains got into my airbrush and are causing severe paint clogging. I will keep you posted on what I find out. Great results from salt chipping, but any methods you can use to keep all minute salt grains in place, and from being around painting area. Just one micro salt grain in the airbrush can make you wish you never built models
Very good production values for this video. Consider me subscribed!
Thanks Dan - appreciate it.
Scale War Machines i have already subscribed.. this is amazing, thanks, brother in models
Thanks +Petr Kotlitel - we appreciate the comment.
Probably the BEST tutorial i have ever seen, well done and thank you.
great idea - i think i will not be bored in the next winter - like this, thx ;)
Thank you for showing this technique!
Completely demystied an amazing technique. Thank you so much.
some people are restoring rusty models, while others are making them look like rust, crazy world 😎👍
Definitely worth subscribing! I just learned something new!
very good looks very nice Im considering doing this to my real car.
Thumbs up for a like.
I like the idea of a real layer of paint pealing up to reveal beaten metal underneath. I remember the very popular Honda Prelude from the early 80's with it's rack and pinion steering. But it's paint job was a joke, exposing pale metal and undercoat only a few years after it's purchase. They all had this look. No, I do not want to celebrate that with the paint peel technique. I'm thinking old neon signs.....
Awesomeness!! Earned my subscription. Thanks
I bet if you tap lightly on the side of this car little pieces of rust fall underneath it !
Great job !
Good technic how rust tutorial for scale models , thanks for sharing
Great job! I like it very much! Greetings from Functional model building Munich Uli
Awsome I love the way it turned out on the military model. But the VW was just classic of the ones I have seen being in an area that uses salt on the roads. Adds some really authentic look to the model. I may use this on a model but I have to figure out what car I want to do it to. Probably a 1955 GMC Blue Chip 150 would look really good with this.
I know theres a very little chance of this question being snwered on such an old video but can you do this if you dont own an airbrush?
Answer inbound! The answer is, sort of, the principle's the same but naturally the effect tends to work best with thin sprayed on layers and that also gives a more realistic and faded paint effect which is then enhanced by the salt erosion. If brush painting though, you will naturally dislodge the salt also. Have a look at 'chipping fluid' videos or the 'hairspray technique' - that might work better. Videos on the channel showing it!
@scalewarmachines thanks man! I don't have an airbrush but I've got a warhammer project that this will look perfect on.
Wow! Best vid I've seen! Thanks 4 sharing! Have A Super Blessed Week!.....Gus

superb video👍👍👍
Great video,Im doing a motorcycle and was looking up images of rust to duplicate and seen your Volkswagen which led me to your video. I wont be able to use this technique on the motor cycle i'm doing but was very impressed with what you did and just had to say Great Job.
Thanks Ed.
gold hands thanks for video
This is gangster!
Very helpful .
Cool video. Mike Espo .
Wow! Thank you for the great video on ratting out one's project. I was able to purchase the rust & dust paints here in the US. Subbed!
Thanks!
That is amazing, I never seen that before.
Nice Technique! Thanks... will be doing this on a WPL B36 RC!!
Nice Job. Thanks for the Video. What Color Hue are the gray/blue?
It's as per the instructions - it's supposed to be Bahamia Blue (?) or similar. Mixed as per Tamiya's instructions using a light blue, a green & something else probably Gloss white. In the 1964 Beetle kit you get the ratio & color refs.
That looks so convincing, I got tetanus just from looking at it.
That paint job is awesome!!!
Wow! That looks amazing! I was bought some rust washes today so I may try this out!
Nice idea like and abo for you !!!LG.RC-FAMILY-FUN 🙊🙉🙈
good car
Your VW bug looks great. I will share it to some friends of mine.Greetings from Braunschweig very close by Wolfsburg. Best C...
Sir I've seen all these videos, and just discovered yours. A couple before yours were impressive, rust through using tin foil and such, but you are a true artist doing this. I only hope you continue because your work is mind boggling realistic as real! One thing I notice is folks distress the wheels and tires, but don't cut the tires flat to the rims? My discerning eye draws first thing to the tires, and wants and expects to see rims holding the weight of the vehicle and tires separated and looking like not a fraction of a pound of air has existed for years. Cut those tires up to the wheels straight across, dig it into realistic mini stones or something with some shrubbery growing around it and you have something better than the most famous artists. As far as I am concerned. And I have buddies who would find great value in this work, and not much in any painting. In other words them and I would fork over good money for your art in this field, but none for Picasso and such. There is so much more to this art than a brush and a canvas that if up is up and down is down the best of the best (creators of this artform) works will be commanding the top painters prices in the future. Stay in the game you have this mastered and I have a strong feeling this art is gonna explode forever in popularity. You are truly a special artist. God bless always
I've been making model cars for 20 years. Its only been the last couple years i started really getting into distressed and wrecked. I did body work for years, and everything had to be perfect. Its quite fun to do the same but opposite process. Thanks for this tip.
Nice technique, i think the hairspray technique is great as well.
I tried this technique on a locomotive roof using these products, and the results were amazing! One problem I ran into was, the water would bead up over the Life Color rust paint. I used dish detergent to rememdy this but, it seemed to use a lot of it. I would normally use isopropyl as a wetting agent but, obviously, I would not use on top of paint.
As a beginner I would have liked to know what primer it was and what you sealed the rust layer with. I realise this is probably obvious to anyone who has done this for a while. Loved the video though. Thank you.
I've been looking at all different kinds of weathering techniques for a project of mine. This is helpful! And I should invest in an airbrush.
Use a hot needle to make rust holes in the bodywork
your insane your stuff is amazing u make it look easy
Is this possible without and airbrush? Probably would look weird if paint it with a brush but at least using some x coloured spray can.
clawhammr666 You can do with an aerosol can (rattle can) but you will have less control - this works by spraying different intensities of top coat over the salt that's why it's suited to an airbrush. A paint brush method is never going to work but anybody can try with a spray can.
can this method be done with any type of paint? acrylic/enamal/etc
This is very useful also for model plane such as WW2 Japanese planes
Awesome!! What rust brand is good to buy ?
Incredible, just incredible. I've always loved diecast cars of all sizes, but I'm only recently being exposed, no pun intended, to artificial weathering and how it's an art itself and I'm not gathering tools and resources to try my hand at some of my misc diecasts that I don't care much more. It's weird, I suddenly see beauty in rusty shit boxes on the road lol
amazing! would have bet the salt was used to rub away the blue top coat but it was the opposite way round with the top coat on top of the salt! I think I would be way too scared to try this on my 15mm tanks though
This is fantastic. Would it work on laser cut MDF? I know water and MDF don't mix but there will be minimal exposure and it's already been primed with Halfords grey primer. I have previously ballasted the baseboards with 'a lot' of water on top of primed MDF baseboards with no adverse effects. It is a girder bridge on a model railway and I think will look great weathered like this.
Yes, absolutely
I just finished a weathered truck, and used a simliar process. I did not use the multi colored doors and fenders like you did, but I wish I had. Good job!
What air brush and paints are you using, I've tried to use watered down acrylic paint but the airgun just doesn't spray the paint?
Iwata mostly in this video with either Tamiya or Lifecolor acrylics. Always thin with their own brand thinners for simplicity and each paint brand is different. Test on a scrap model but the level of thinning, air pressure and needle size all make a difference. Try thinning more with their own brand thinners - start with a mix that's 50/50 paint/thinner and high pressure on the Airbrush, then reduce pressure in increments, if paint runs, spiders or doesn't atomise (dry), then up the paint ratio progessing towards 80/20 until the airbrush can't spray it any more or splutters even as you increase the pressure. Then you will know your paint mix ratio and ideal pressure range.
Hey man, fantastic job.
COngrats.

Reworking a King Tiger I built in the 90's, going to use the "salt job" rather than chipping fluid as the outcome looks amazing! At 1:37 you mention "seal to protect the rusty base" I'm assuming that refers to a matte varnish? Thanks.
Yep - sealing is any kind of varnish, matt, satin, gloss, Klear etc.
This is incredible.
Very nice video and very nice effect !!!! I just tried it and it’s very realistic!!! Just a question I had some kind of light white foggy layer after I applied the Matt varnish coating... is it an effect of leftover of salt or is it my varnish ? I use Vallejo ultra Matt varnish ... thank you for your advice
Could be the varnish, we've had this before with Vallejo varnish (it's still our favourite matt varnish though). If you want to bring it all back, see our video on Tamiya Clear Paints. We got rid of precisely this effect on the GMC truck in the film with a thin coat of their warmer Clears.
Very good video ... I like it! You have interesting content.
Can't say with any certainty as never done it!
i painted my model a digital camo, do you think i can reverse the order ? first cover the whole model with salt and then remove it from the places i want to chip ?
We don't see why not. As long as you seal each coat, you can do it as many times as you like in whatever order you like.
Very nice
This is fantastic! I'd do it myself, but I think it'd be a tad more difficult on 1/152th scale cars
Short clip, simple method. No bloody waving hands, talking heads. Just pure information.
Is that an observation or a criticism! LOL! Thanks for commenting.
hi i'm kinda newbie with this kind of hobby, may I ask what kind of color do you use in painting rust? i prefer tamiya paint
brand. Thanks!
We answered this over on Facebook but for those interested in Renzo's comment, in the Tamiya range go with any of these. Their browns, linoleum brown, NATO Brown, Dark Brown etc. Don't forget you can mix shades too. And why not experiment with a bit of Dark Copper too. Basically you need to layer and or mix shades to get a convincing effect.
Thanks. I have very lightly sanded with 1200 sandpaper the rust brown color and got a very nice mottled finish .
Very nice!
Hi great video for sure, can i ask a question? what did you use before applying the salt (wet one) is a clear coat or any else? thanks :D
Reyhan Ramadan just a thin coat of varnish or Klear - although it's not always necessary but recommended to protect the paint.
good job
I thought hairspray was needed to achieve this effect using salt, especially with water based paints. Am I wrong?
This video uses both techniques. So you are wrong, kinda.
wow, amazing.
Can you use this technique with metal bumpers or just about anything that would look like rusty metal? Bumpers, headlight covers, etc.
Yes you can but for smaller parts you might want to use a "chipping" solution or you can watch our video on chrome weathering.

Thank you. I will check it out😀
Great and informative video thanks for sharing your technique. 👍🏼😃
No problem 👍
Hello.nice work and Many greetings from Germany Peter
this is brilliant! wondering if this method could be used with acrylic paints or other mediums as well. I'm a mixed media artist and I use a ton of different mediums.....I'll have to give this method a go and see how it turns out. thanks so much for sharing!!
Should work with anything water based like acrylics or mediums but probably might work with enamels or oil based paints too,
Awesome! I'll give it a shot and let ya know how it comes out!! :) thanks!!
Very well explained! Step by step to the desired result! Top!
Hello. Great job. Loved it.
Can you make small Chipping with this on tank IT are the salt corns to big? Great video by the way :)
Yes no problem. Just use smaller salt particles
Great video. Thanks for your tips 👍
what a video i saw a lot but your is easy nice and very good in details liked subscribe youtube facebook Chanel thanks for uploading
+Shah GC Thanks a lot.
I've seen a few methods for creating that rusted out look, and yours is by far the best looking. All the others left the rusty areas looking too...sparkly. They didn't have the strange, dried out look rust spots get. I am totally subbing this channel.
I have a Transformer I want to do this to.
Next time use a old Vintage 356 Porsche !!
Great work. before the salt what do you use to protect the rust effect ? ı used some clear mat varnish on the rust but the rust effect turned out very dark brown. as ı know we have to protect the rust before start it chipping
+bursasporturk You can of course protect using matt varnish or Johnsons Klear, but you don't always need too. You can just apply it over the pure paint if you used a primer & let it dry properly.
Thanks for the tutorial. I've only started learning to paint models for about 3 months. It's been really fun with lots of trials and errors.
1:36 do I seal it matte? I assume it's matte.
Seal with matt or clear, you can matt it all down at the end. The sealing protects the underlying paint.
Very interested in this technique. Do you need to use Enamel paints for the base coats since you are working with water or can you use acrylic with no issues?
No you can use acrylics - if you are worried, seal with varnish or Klear - otherwise this still works even if the acrylic is unprotected. Just make sure it's fully dry.
Can i ask whenever i do the salt technique the salt sticks to the paint and doesnt come off easily do you know how i can fix this? Thanks and cheers
Firstly, make sure the base-coat dries thoroughly first. Use slightly higher quality rock salt that you ground down into smaller chunks. Do not use too much water. Finally, rub it off rigorously after the top coat. You'll see we use a toothbrush and a mini-drill with a brush attachment to try to remove any specks. However, you might also see that something often still remains in the shots, despite the above steps. So you can also rub down with a really fine sanding stick and a bit of water to get rid of any remnants.
So awesome! Many thanks for share!
Host can I make chrome trim doors on my vw beetle 1/18 and my Fiat 500 1/16 ?
+Sethi1st In other words How can I paint chrome trim on doors? Easy, mask off with high-quality masking tape (e.g. Tamiya) & spray with your best silver, metallizer or chrome shade - then remove masking. If you are after good results Alcad paints should work well but require careful usage. If you're after a real mirror finish you can also bare metal foil which is rubbed on & cut to shape. If you want to add your own chrome trim, you will need to apply small details using plastic card glued on then carefully sanded to form the trim parts.
that looks amazing! I just started a "Ghetto Civic" build, and this would make the undercarriage look extremely realistic. thanks for the tips!
WOW ¡¡ Congratulation ¡¡
where is the flat tire... thank you
Can you be so kind to give me what air brush machine you have and paints brand you use thank you so much this video is awesome
The best way to see the equipment we generally use is to watch our playlist, The Airbrush Show series. From memory this was a Revell Omega Compressor with and Iwata HP-CH and Iwata Eclipse CS. Paints are as you see mainly Lifecolor and Tamiya with some Vallejo.
nice, thx for tutorial
RePriMo Wargame Terrain, so take a look please :)
That beetle looks brilliant I’m wanting to do to my Leeann body would this work on plastic ???
phil kennedy do you mean Lexan - like in a RC body shell? In principle it would work but wouldn’t it be reversed? Don’t you paint Lexan from the inside?
Scale War Machines yer but I’m thinking I’ll have to paint on the outside to get this effect ? Cause that bug is fantastic
