      Antonio,
      If I may request,
      While time is precious - would you perhaps take the time in taking conversions from the inches to centimeters when talking about them to your viewers?
      The metric system is more widely used and I feel it would become more comprehensive to those others out there who aren't used to the inches measurement.
      1 inch equates to 2.54 centimeters,
      While it's an easy concept to convert as is miles to kilometers, not many are used to the exact conversions. It would help a ton!

      NZ -- I totally agree with you, which is why I would often search for and buy $2000+ pre-owned designer suits (e.g., Canali, Armani, Zegna) in pristine condition on ebay for around $200-300. It takes some patience, but it's worth it. Sure, I would usually need some minor tailoring for an additional cost, but overall it was a great deal, and I would get tons of compliments when I wore those suits, often being told that I looked like some movie star. Antonio did not specifically mention "the drape" of a high-end suit, which is what really makes it stand out. Corollary -- I would never buy a suit from an ebay vendor who did not take returns, because as good as the item might look in the online ad, it might not be as good in person, or feel as good, or have the same color, etc., so you always need the option to return it. Ebay vendors who say, "Seller does not take returns" never got my business.

      you could buy one from a consignment store. they always have clothing that are two or three seasons old but no one will be able to tell because it's a suit.

      Every man should be able to afford a $2000 suit. If they cannot then that means they are not working to anywhere near their full potential.
      The average salary is $50,000 and it is not hard to actually earn 25% to 50% higher than this.

    • @TomRNZ
      @TomRNZ 7 лет назад +38

      bighands69 What an absurd statement. The average salary (US, I'm assuming) is irrelevant. The average salary is measured across ALL jobs, which means that to say that EVERY man should be able to afford a $2,000 suit is demonstrably untrue. A person's salary depends on how much their job pays, not on what the National average is. It also depends on location. Not only does location influence how much a person is paid, but because cost of living varies from location to location, it also has an impact on how much money a person has left after expenses.
      The National average that's measured across all jobs means nothing to me. I don't make $50,000 a year (which incidentally isn't the National average in my country anyway), so it means nothing to me what the average is, and my city is an expensive city in which to live. I have a multitude of expenses that must take priority before I could even entertain the thought of spending a couple of grand on an item of clothing.
      So no. I personally can't afford a $2,000 suit, and neither can EVERY man.

    I travel to Hong Kong and Thailand at least once a year and update my wardrobe with tailored suits, jackets, slacks and shirts every year. A suit tailored and cut to your measurements and then fitted twice is like an armor upgrade in the boardroom. On an average, I spent $250 for a suit with 2 pairs of pants and 3 shirts, all custom tailored, with my name embroidered in the suit coat and my initials on the sleeves of my shirts. It is worth the trip!

    • @mattjohnston2
      @mattjohnston2 8 лет назад +16

      Jared Fontaine would I pay 3k for a suit? Not likely, no. Under the perfect circumstances, and if I made the money to do it, maybe.
      I did, however, pay roughly $1,000 for my suit, and you can tell the difference in how it looks, how it fits and feels. Custom fit clothing isn't cheap, but if you can afford it it's worth it.
      Besides, why would you watch a video comparing a $200 suit to a $2,000 suit if you're going into it with preconceived notions that a 2k suit is never worth it anyways? Sounds just like a waste of time to me.

    • @jaredfontaine2002
      @jaredfontaine2002 8 лет назад +3

      Matt Johnston I always want to keep an open mind. Also technology has changed so maybe the $3k would wick away sweat and keep you dryer or actually do something. I am not against spending a lot of money but you have to justify it rationally and this video doesn't. Am I going to get a good job if I have a $3K suit? Just like the majority of luxury goods they are just puffery. No difference between a luxury car and a cheap one. Even if there differences are they really worth 100 times the price? I don't think so...

    • @shaneguyton7132
      @shaneguyton7132 8 лет назад +1

      +Jared Fontaine I have a $5k suit and 3 $1k tweed jackets a few 3-$500 suits and many 1-$200 suits. The $5k suit and $1k jackets material is thick and the patterns are very intricate and something you don't see on a daily basis. And the woman take notice. the others depending on the material are not that much different. But if buying something is going to hit your pockets deep. Take it from someone that has a variety of suits it wouldn't be worth the price. I'd rather had several $200 suits then 1 $2k suit.

    This was a fantastic video! Very informative. Years ago, I bought an expensive Ralph Lauren suit, didn't wear it for years, and then got it fitted and updated because I lost weight. It's like I have a brand new suit. I have a couple of mid-price range suits I did the same thing to, and they actually look and wear better than when I bought them. However, my next move will be to have a suit made for me. I'm thinking Brooks Brothers.

I worked directly with Marton Mills, who graciously sent me fabric samples. The tailor was a regular MM customer so you can order a jacket in any of the 50 or so MM tweeds. The luxurious feel of British-woven 100% new wool cannot be overstated, and the jacket looked and felt fantastic when it arrived. (I went with a Gun Club Check.)

      Most cars at $2,000 require another $3,000 to get it up to scratch I’ll let that sink in to you for a moment a $5,000 car expect to pay $4,000 to get it up to scratch , I know this how I’m a mechanic and have bought many cheap cars only to find out they need a bulk load of work after most people run them into the ground , people don’t look after their cars and if $2,000 is a decent car then you are clearly dreaming

    Nice informative video Antonio. I myself have been interested in classic menswear quite a lot for last two/three years. The difference and main factor for me is always the material/fabric out of which item is made. Learning about materials/fabrics really helped me to focus on quality items (for not necessarily much higher price).
    I don't know if you have made a video about it but video focusing on a way how individual can identify/distinguish the materials/fabrics (and their respective varieties) in person while visiting the store would be great. The tags are not telling the whole story unfortunately (i. e. long vs short cashmere fibers) or information on them might even be false.

    I have 5000 dollar Tom Ford suits in my huge suit collection. My suits are 25% luxury brands, 25 % high street or what Americans would call mainstream brands and 50% are bespoke or what American' call tailor made. Any off the rack suit I buy high street or luxury is altered by my tailor or in-store no matter how well I think it fitsadjustments make it look much better.

    It was 1982, and I was getting ready to get married. I had been in this country for only a handful of years. I was green as green could be. No friends, no immediate family, no RUclips to ask questions. I searched in a few stores, and finally walked into Sears. I bumped into this three piece brown suit. It fitted well, so I bought it and got married in it. After all the festivities we took a plane from Boston to West Palm Beach. Waiting for the bags at the carrousel, this well dressed guy say hi, and complimented my suit. Good taste he said. I have a Pierre Cardine suit just like that one. I smiled on the inside, and replied. Good thing you're not wearing now. Yes, he said. From that day on I haven't paid attention to labels, or paid ton of money for my clothing. Thanks for the video.

    Talent, skill, productivity, and efficiency are critical to success. But image and projection often times pay even greater dividends in your career. I would wager that the expense of several top end suits will be returned to you ten fold by the time you retire from your chosen field. The best investment you can make is in yourself.

      I have a 7.5k cucinelli and to be honest, I don’t see much of a difference from say canaglia and so on. In my opinion, it is mostly about branding such as Loro Piana. Why is it that a Mongolian turtleneck made with the finest cashmere you can find costs 10 times less than a Loro Piana with similar style and material?? It’s because of branding

    I have found that my favourite places to get a suit are Suitsupply MTM and Cad and the Dandy for bespoke.
    Unfortunately I''m too short to get a suit from Suitsupply even made to measure, but their coats and shirts are perfect for me.
    For suits, I go to Cad and the Dandy on Savile Row in London. I paid about £1500 but when you take into consideration it's a fully bespoke suit made on Savile Row, I think it's an amazing price. Not to mention it only cost that much because of my choice of fabric. Their fully hand made range starts from £1000 I believe, and I would highly recommend them.

      Not well. I'm not saying that SuitSupply is bad, i actually like them a lot. Understand that Savile Row has been doing the suiting game for A LONG TIME. To become a tailor there you have to go through decades of training.
      SuitSupply may be a better construction than your average suit, but it's still geared to the masses. Savile Row is Bespoke, with multiple fitting to get it right. It fits you and only you.
      I work for a luxury suiting company, not a designer company that slaps a label on there to hike up the price, but an Italian company with a well established reputation.
      Being in the business, i have met people that have been willing to let me see some of the items they have had made on Savile, and it's a league of it's own. Meticulous attention to detail.

    Some people don't understand value. 1) money is not a real entity. It is only a representation of value. There is no factual "right price" for anything. 2) value does exist beyond functionality. i knew my tailors name and she knew me, i called her mum, now sadly she died the other day, but i can recall sitting for days on end watching her lay out fabrics and pin tracing paper masks to it chalking this line having to stand and get measured, as a child i just accepted thats what all mums did, no, she was exceptional, she could have run her own clothing brand my first wife was disabled she bespoke designed her wedding dress no less, she had spinal curving and so one shoulder was lower than the other, not her dress, the shoulder was built up by hand, in fact when she had to buy clothes off the peg she would pull them apart cut them down and re sew them, now i have not her ability but it has instilled in me the knowledge of what a good tailor does, and know what now i know instinctively what is right and how it is right, small details when a seam will last when a cut is in line with the weave and will stretch or resist stretch even, all of these things i never knew i knew, i do miss my mum a lot, i dont think we went to many clothes shops just fabric shops and her sewing machines she had several digital ones and the old basic singer cast iron ones that she loved,

Most of the guys can't tell, don't know and don't care what material the suit is made of. If you use a suit everyday, then it makes sense to invest and pay more on something of better quality.

    first off a 5'9" that weighs 150lbs will not wear the same suit as a 5'9" that weighs 250lbs. the 150 pounder will wear a 38R while the 250pounder will wear a 52R and the cut will make a difference. an american cut has natural shoulders and relaxed fit, european cut will have military shoulders and boxy athletic, british cut will be in-between. the sizes also differs as quoted from above, a size 38R can be just regular meaning it has a 6" difference from the chest size to the waist size meaning the waist from the 38R will be 32", there's also an athletic fit which will mean an 8" difference or more depending on the maker, and then there's a portly, meaning the chest and waist difference will be 2" or even 0" difference chest to waist. the regular signifies the height, so an R or regular suit can be worn by mostly 5'9" to 6', a long(L) will be for 6'1" to 6'3", XL from 6'4" above, then theres the short(S) for 5'8" or less, now these are just general guidelines, rule of thumb is that the coat should cover your seat part properly. all ready made suits have to be altered for individual fit, but one should start with the proper size first. now if you are oddly shaped or need something bespoked, then you will require a custom made suit or a made to measure suit. hong kong tailors roam the united states and normally have trunk shows in hotels and their custom suits are not expensive and will normally take 1 week to deliver. or go to China were you can buy italian suits with high quality italian wools from the best fabric houses of italy(ie Lora Piana etc) for less than $200 for the most part probably even a $100.

    wow, 1000+ comments, heh!
    ok, so, i came into a little bit of money, i used it to go back to school, get a very nice laptop, AND buy six custom-made shirts and three custom-made [aka bespoke] suits.
    what an experience it was. i showed up to a hotel room, and a guy there measured me from top to bottom and all around. at first i was a bit nervous as a girl alone in a hotel room with a strange guy, but he was incredibly professional. one interesting thing is that he didn't measure my inseam. i asked about that and he said it was unnecessary.
    the hotel room had a lot of tables, and all the surfaces were covered with pattern books of fabric. he asked me what i want to suits to be made of. i had no clue so he educated me on that. did you know that wool can be very light and not make you hot? i didn't. anyway, i chose fabric for my suits and for my shirts.
    one thing i will say is that i am not 100% happy with my pants. they are nice and well-made, but they are a little more 'girl' than i would like. i'm going to take them to a tailor here and have them made a little more 'boy' like. more of a slim fit.
    a really cool thing is that they embroidered my name into my jackets.

    I think a more important question to ask is at what point the difference starts to become hard to spot. When shopping for stuff in general there is almost always a "sweet spot" at which point you will get a noticeable upgrade from the cheap competitors without spending money on an increase in quality you'll barely even notice.
    For instance I think most people will notice a difference if they go out and buy two pairs of headphones at 20 dollars and 150 dollars respectively. The 150 dollar ones will almost always feel much more comfortable, more robustly built, sound better in terms of frequency balance and "open-ness" and might come with better warranties and possibility of getting spare parts. Now, tell the avarage consumer to test a pair of headphones at 150 dollars and another pair at 500 dollars. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the avarage consumer either wouldn't spot the difference or would find it to be very subtle. The first upgrade makes sense, the second one seems a bit unnecessary.
    So let's say I want to be a well-informed customer who wants to pay enough to be fairly sure to get the quality but not so much that I spend over that point. Which price range should I be checking out? I'm curious.

      +damillionmalania Good question. Start at $400-$500 range. Also, read reviews about a certain brand you want to buy. E.g. Suit supply, Modern Tailor...

    Cerutti... bought it when I was over weight, still looks fantastic... and as for fabric and attention to detail, you'd have to buy it to believe it. No I'm not a show off millionaire, I only a cook.

    Best not too expensive Italian brands for suits are: Boggi (around 500 €), Libero (250 €) and Gutteridge (200 €). Boggi and Libero are based in Milano, Gutteridge in Naples.

    I managed to purchase a couple of Brioni and Loro Piana suits at a discount price and got few as a gift and now I really can't go back to cheaper suits because the difference is so significant when compared to mid-range Hugo Boss suits etc..

    some of the nicest upcoming brands i know of are:
    eleventy, they make some really nice and modern clothing
    m0851 is a canadian brand which sells only leather goods, and it is AMAZING, plus its relatively new and modern in design
    COS is the "deluxe spin-off" of H&M. It might be better known than the former 2 brands, but i still feel like i needed to share it.
    BTW great work Antonio, keep it up

    In the 90's I bought nothing but Zenga suits and my brother in law is still wearing them. Key to maintaining them is dry clean them only when absolutely necessary. Have them pressed when wriggled.

    Time is also a factor when buying a suit. My most recent suit I had to get for an event where all of the men were asked to wear color of suit that I did not have. I put off buying it until a week before I needed it. With the taylor it ended up costing close to $1000 but it fit and felt worse than $200 suits I have that were just off the rack. What I should have done is follow the advice in the video and have a taylor make a suit from scratch by picking out everything (fabric, liner, buttons, etc) to my liking. This would probably take at least 3-4 weeks of time. Go custom if it will be over 1 grand.

    I have recently found a great fabric company Gladson, that makes woolen fabrics that I would put up against Hickey-Freeman. I have all my suits be-spoke so I do save quite a bit. The feel of the wool is tremendous particularly the winter weights. It lacks just a hairs difference from Holland and Sherry, which I have, but I am happy with the Gladson fabrics and the Holland and Sherry. They both have their fabric swatches on line.

    If any of you are in London then I would recommend Charles Tyrwhitt. They're a really good suit company who really care for you. They're not to expensive either, with an average 2 piece only costing ~£300. Alterations cost a bit more but it's really worth it and they keep working with you until you're 100% happy with your results.
