Dressmaker here. If you're study up and take your time about shopping, you can find a $100 suit that looks just fine to anyone standing more than two feet away. It won't be anywhere near as comfortable, and it won't last as long no matter how carefully you look after it, but it'll LOOK fine. So if you're worried that you'll be an embarrassment to yourself if you don't spend a lot of money, don't be. Generally as long as the suit fits well, is of a suitable style, and doesn't have any obvious manufacturing flaws, it's not going to stand out as looking especially cheap. But if you've reached a point in your career where you're wearing suits almost every day, it's probably worth it to find a good suit. I can't overstate the difference in comfort between a polyester suit and one made from wool, cotton, silk, or some blend thereof; or the difference between one that fits correctly versus one that doesn't. People don't often realize it but in between the overheating, dampness and stuffiness from synthetic fibers and the poor posture and restricted movement caused by things like ill-fitting sleeves or narrow chests, you actually end up being more tired and stressed simply due to the clothes you're wearing--and if you're dealing with if five days a week, it adds up. That said... you don't have to spend a thousand dollars or more on a suit to have a good one. Shop vintage. You can buy a good suit for less than fifty dollars. Make sure it's of a good material and fits right in the shoulders. Then, find a good tailor. Minor repairs and adjustments aren't nearly as expensive as you might think, and a good tailor can make just about any suit look fantastic. And learn to care for your suit on your own--any idiot with hands can learn to hem their trousers, restitch lining, reinforce buttons and seams, etc. And a lot of time it's minor things like that cause a $1,000+ suit to end up in a consignment shop for fifteen dollars.
I own a couple $100 Suits & a "hair under" $1000 Suit I bought and had Tailored. I find ppl respond well to either, though I personally feel more comfortable in the expensive one. I feel it is bc so few men now even wear Suits...I mention "Suits" to the avg guy I meet & he tells me "I had to attend 2 Weddings & one Funeral, so I own one Suit, otherwise I never wear one" I have looked around for a Fancy Vintage, but find those fancy ones are always in XXL size...the Fancy brand ones in my size show that they were worn "1000 times" (the Collars or Elbows are frayed) or have Stains, or are a really out of style cut, & no Trousers to go with them. My first one was a ?700 or so Scottish make I got umpteen yrs ago new, & well made, & passed it to a friend in need. It did not seem to "wear" at all! My second I still have, a Mexx from Romania, ..the Buttons were sewn on with "3 hairs" (they used Reg. Thread instead of Button Thread) & are dangling now otherwise served me well for $500.
EXCELLENT advice and perspective. Wish I could give you more likes! I've had good luck @ outlet stores +buying the "boring" (Grey or Navy wool, pinstripe etc) but nicer quality Sale suits. Therefore it's a double discount. So I end up with a little more quality but still in the lower price range (approx $250-450). Sometimes even less for returns. Leave room in your budget to get the suit alterations! That extra 15% pays Huge dividends in appearance; especially if you have non-standard arms/legs etc.!

When I used to make wedding dresses for clients I would take the grooms out shopping for their suits and they would go for cheap saying it was for one day until I got them to put on a higher end suit and they immediately felt the difference and understood the investement.
I just recently bought my first suit and it was a "hundred dollar suit". (Navy blue from Macy's).. I got it tailored to fit me good for $30 extra. I feel so good and proud wearing it! I'm a college student and that was my price range and needed it fast.... but altogether i can't wait to get my next suit and try to save up for a nicer one.. Preferably one that has a working pocket square! Lol 😆

Made to measure is where its at. Specificallt to your measurements. You can spend $300 at IndoChino ships in 5 weeks from Hong Kong. Or $1000 Brooks Brothers off the rack and it wont fit right... Its all about youre own measurements.

Thrift shopping for suits is a great idea. My 3 favorite suits are all ones I’ve bout second hand. In fact one of them was 3 bucks, for a 3 piece suit! Other new department store suits I’ve bought for 100-200 dollars either broke, or were so uncomfortable that I don’t wear them any more.

Dude, I've been to New York Fashion week, wearing a Zara suit that I didn't even tailor, yet I was getting compliments after compliments on my outfit 😂. 99% of people have no clue, as long as the cut is nice and you don't let them inspect the suit😂😂😂
C'mon Justin. These days one can buy a decent wool suit under $150. As of right now a Michael Kors suit you can buy for $220, second for a half a price, what makes the price $165 a piece, in D&K. I'm not promoting D&K, I just added to my wardrobe 2 beautifully fit Michael Kors suits from that store. That's all. Even I have more than enough suits.
A real class Kiton Napoli suit? Well, to my... "embarrassment" i don't have one, I don't have money to pay extra $80% just for a brand tag. If I'd stumble into a sale, and only I'd stumble into a sale, I would consider to buy another Brioni or Dior. Otherwise, Michael Kors, at the moment, did the trick. One doesn't have to buy 3K suit to feel, look and actually be stylishly dressed. And don't be so touchy on the subject. I just felt the guy fell for your narrative. In his $160 suit, he may look better than you in your 5k Kiton Napoli or me in my best "nothing to brag about" 1k suit... ;) Cheers.

Today I checked out a local tailor here in the Philippines. Their standard suits are at Php 8,000 or about $160. I think I'm gonna give it a try and hope for the best. Thanks Sir Raphael. :)
Just for the record, Joseph A Bank vintage suits are great. 30 or 40 years ago it used to be a great men's store that was destroyed by corporate. If you're vintage shopping just look for the vintage red label. If you see that you've found a great suit from days gone by!

This was so handy to help educate on what to look for in suits. I see all these mass produced suits that are clearly the cheapest made suits for 3-500 dollars. I don't mind the cheaper looking stuff but I don't want to pay more for less. I personally go shopping when the seasons change. Suit fashions are changing or going out of season and I go to the lesser stores - such as Kohls or JCPennies here in America, and I buy my suits (with pants) for 20-25 dollars because of clearance racks. It may not last for more than 2 years - but at 20 dollars you can quickly cycle through them and get a newer style multiple times a year
The Canali suit you mentioned, I’ve had 3 of them. I still have one that I love and get compliments on. People like touching the arms or shoulders as It feels so smooth and cool to the touch. It feels that way to wear also. The trousers/pants have wider legs than others I’ve worn and feel absolutely superb! It is the most expensive of the three I’ve paid for @£80 from eBay! It is double-breasted. The others were a grey double-breasted and a navy single -breasted. I love the feeling they give me. Goodness knows how good a bespoke suit from Savile Row would feel?! A good suit makes me walk tall. People treat you better too, when you wear a lovely suit.
I’ll be honest, I have never seen a suit for less than $189 at Jos A Bank. And that was $100 off. Best suit I’ve ever bought so far, super 100 wool not stiff at all. Yes it was fused but honestly I don’t find it insulating nearly as much as the polyester one I have.
Great vid, just picked up a nice Canali Milano suit on sale. There is no comparison to one I bought a couple years ago (if that even) for $250. The second I moved my arms up, the entire jacket would move, so that point you made on low cut arms was spot on. You can also feel the glued portions in the jacket. Would never recommend for anyone to buy a suit for under $500 - at least here in Canada. They are almost just as bad as ones that sell for $100. Even my tuxedo rental for a friends wedding wasn't that great, and it was 'fitted.' The Canali Milano is a masterpiece (relatively speaking of course, lots of other great companies around) for the price point. The second I put the jacket on, it instantly felt snug, comfortable, and little restriction in movement. At least now I have my old one to compare if my friends ask if there really is a difference.
I have a Burberry suit that costed around 1,200 dollars. I must say it is excellent in fit and quality. I have owned it for about a year or two and it still looks great.
A few points: 1. He doesn't mention having a good, old-school tailor at all. An expert tailor can make a guy in an average suit look like James Bond. Details like moving buttons up or down, changing angles/draping, lengthen/shortening a half an inch to fit, anything is doable and the suit will fit like a glove. 2. Fashions don't change fundamentally with suits for real men. Trendiness goes out of fashion all the time to make another sale. 3. The English bespoke suits are what serious professional men should be aiming towards. Mine are made in Wales ($$$ VAT taxes aside...) and whether you're standing, sitting, etc.no-matter-what, it looks perfect 100% of the time. 4. A decent shave/haircut/etc are part of the well put together man. Details demonstrate character and looking like a middle aged rabbi in a wrinkled suit when you're 20 years younger looks terrible.
Your best bet is to just go to J. Press or Brooks Brothers and buy a $1,600 suit off the rack. The price of the suits they make -- by hand in the US out of Italian wool, cashmere and silk -- is nothing if not phenomenal for the superb quality...damn near unbeatable (outside Asia, anyway) And once a year they have their "Buy 2 for $2,000" annual sale, too.

I just bought a vintage Loro Piana suit handmade in Napoli, Italy for €300. Retail price was +€2000. The guy I bought it from only wore it once I believe. As you can imagine the quality is immaculate. I am very content.

I remember my first suit in H&M for $100 when i was in U.S. It isnt really that high quality since i just want a suit that i can suit sometimes. Recently during the Covid pandemic, i bought a set in Tokyo worth JPY10,000(original price JPY20,000) around in $100 usd and its way better than the old one that i bought.

I once got a vintage car coat at a thrift shop. When I went to a tailor to sew on a button. I asked how much the coat might sell for, (it was about 1975) the coat, I believe was from the 1940s, and he started off his answer with,”Well, if you could find a wool of this quality...,” then said $250. Keep in mind this was in 1975 or so, when $250 was $250. I don’t think I was paying half that for a nice apartment. With sales discounts (nobody wanted it), I paid 67¢.
This was a delight to watch because the differences are laid out in a matter of fact manner without pulling any punches. This might be over simplifying but I always felt that if you are not getting measured for a suit that will be custom sewn for you, you will be getting a cheap knockoff imitation. Instead, use that $100.00 toward the price of a great suit that you will be proud to own and wear.
I got an Ungaro suit for $20 in a vintage store and looked terrific in it, based on the compliments. I will have second thoughts on spending $1000 even if I could afford it because you can get a good one for $20.
I bought some suits in S Korea (Itaewon) 15 -18 years ago and I still have them. They still fit OK, but to me they're a little out of style. In your opinion, are they worth keeping and having them re-worked to be a little more stylish? They may be showing some signs of having a glued liner (puckering ...) after this video, I'm going to pull them out and check them over again. Thanks for the post!
I have a $100 and a $1000 suit. This is all 100% true. If you can afford it, try one out, you won't regret it. My $1000 suit is an off-the-rack Ralph Lauren from Dillard's of all places. Of course the fit isn't perfect being OTR but it fits a whole lot better and is ten times more comfortable than any cheaper suit I've ever owned. And they're made in Canada and not slapped together in some sweatshop in Nicaragua. Well worth the money and I plan on adding many, many more to my collection. I plan on stepping up to RL Purple Label as well one of these days.
oh when I study in fashion school in London, a friend of our teacher works as a handcraft mans tailor in high luxury fashion house for years told us there aren't any different between hand sew and machine sew in terms of finally effect. It just made to measure services and material and artful design make a huge difference in the quality of the garment compare from what you can get for cheaper price brand
Its ultimately just a sign that the garment is likely to be over a higher quality overall, not necessarily that the hand stitched collar is automatically better.
Not many people who work in the fashion industry would drive hone the point of ”buy vintage and not fast fashion, think of the workers at the factory and the environment”. You earn some serious trust for that. This fall I’ll replace my cheap, worn out gloves with some stylish quality gloves from Fort Belvedere. Only sucks that I live in the EU and have to pay import duty, but they’re probably worth it.
I'm so thankful for Thrift stores, because I'm retired on a fixed income, and I really don't want to spend $1000 to $3000 on a suit when I have other financial responsibilities like the inherited house I have that needs some TLC. So once again I'm so thankful that I'm aware of the good deals from second hand stores, they're a life saver for many wardrobe purchased items I have.
Buying quality items at thrift stores and spending a few bucks to get them tailored is the BEST way to buy men'swear on a budget. Not even a question. I routinely see suits and sportcoats in the $500-1000 retail range selling for $20-30 at thrift stoes, usually with minimal wear. Most clothes get donated because they don't get worn, not because they're damaged. This means you can often find clothing in good condition with minimal wear.
I love my "cheap" suit. Fits perfect, doesn't feel cheap. And I can move in it. And I saved £900 on it from not spending £1000 :D More money to buy more suits!

Things get intresting when you start talking about 200-400 dollar suits. Some are like overpriced 100 dollar suits (Zara...) while others are build just like a 1000 dollar suit that had too much of the budget in the brand and too little in the rest. Your 400 dollar Suitsupply is typical one that beats the quality of many (fashion brand) suits well in the 1000 dollar price range...
If you're on a budget, get a suit in the best fabric you can and have it altered by a tailor! A decent tailor can really upgrade the fit and feel of a suit and give you much more bang for your buck, as it were.
Weather permitting, a fine peacoat or fine wool winter coat works perfectly on a cheap suit, it becomes the centerpiece of your look and your confidence helps hide the cheapness of a suit as well

Another thing, try restoring a cheap suit that got wet! never looks the same whilst a good suit you can dry out and lightly press and it still looks great. Packing a cheap suit usually spoils it but a good suit you can pack small ( Inside out and armholes facing ) and it still looks good. better to buy a second hand good suit than a new cheap suit. I have mens tweed jackets that are 60 years old and my favorite evening jacket was a man's one from the late 30's ! Quality NEVER goes out of style and it can make a man. And Don't get me on the subject of shoes !
In Romania, clothing is cheaper because 1 ron(our monetary unit) is around 4.5 euros, not sure about dollars. And here there are some brands wich make suits by hand with only natural fabric, and they are about 80-100 euros. And they are great.
I wish this site was available 40 years ago. I managed to st humble through with worsted wool,moderately narrow lapels, two buttons, double vented and spent $ 300/500 years ago. During my working years I had winter and summer suits ( more poly ) breath ability and comfortable movement were key.
He also puts Jos A Bank on the same level as H&M. That's just not true. The mid level suits at Bank are $400 unless they're on clearance and they're much nicer.
I get my suits custom made in Thailand for $200, high quality cashmere with Thai silk lining. Best fitting suits I’ve worn or my father has worn. They will try to upsell you and overcharge but if your a repeat customer they will do it for that much. If you want the info for my tailor there pm me. They will even give you a guide to measure yourself and send them the info, but they don’t guarantee the fit in that case. They have mine on file so unless I gain weight it’s perfect. Also, I was able to haggle better because my wife is Thai, but they said they will match the deal for anyone I send their way.
I wish you had brought up german fusing in this video, some of the best light weight suits in the world utilize german fusing and it is just as good as horse hair canvasing
I only wear TITEM suits. Handmade in Hungary, each of them are tailored for the future owner. Tisza shoes are also quality, but you can find cheaper, real leather quality Polish shoes also here for your outfit.
If someone want good fashion-forward suit, they should look for Saint Laurent/Celine (anything Hedi Slimane, really), or Tom Browne. Saint Laurent is made by Zegna, construction is very good, but, as you said, they all are skinny fit, and armholes are tiny there, everything is quite restrictive, but you look like a celebrity in them.
I love to shop vintage, and I've found some beautiful wool pea coats, but with jackets, as well as pants and shirts, almost everything is too short for me. Jacket sleeves are often 2" - 4" too short. Most jackets are sized "R" (regular) and I always need long, which are generally hard to find. I tried on about a dozen vintage jackets yesterday and only two were close to fitting nicely, but I would have liked at least another inch on the arm length. With pants it's less of a problem, because there are usually more of them that I can sift through (and even when they are marked "30 long" the "30" can vary from 2" short to 4" too long). Long sleeve button-up shirts are almost impossible for me to find. I can get the right length only when I go into the XXL sizes, but then there is about 6" or more extra fabric around the centre.
4:53 Pet peeve of mine, too!! Nothing you can do to raise the armhole, even if it were worth it. I've bought some inexpensive suits that I know I can do this with that won't be too costly of complex - some of them I've done myself by hand. These can be off the rack or second-hand (TIP: second hand suits at thrift stores - look at the stores located in upscale neighborhoods, you'll find some very quality pieces for $20-50). I've made my own Halloween costumes since I was 10 and am self taught, but I have successfully: raised sleeves, brought in the waist through the seat of trousers, raise the back of a jacket, made functioning buttons/surgeon's cuffs, tapered through the leg, brought in the jacket side/waist suppression, pick stitcked, slightly tapered jacket sleeves, removed the buttonhole stitches and re-stitched to bind the edges (going for the cut, then stitch and not stitch then cut, and even removed old canvassing and relined with sewing facing I found of wool (not sure that's a good procedure, but it was half canvassed and the fusing was loose, so I removed what I could and replaced the removed pieces, stitching them in with what was not removable and anchoring it with an invisible pick stitch ... sure that's not how you do it, but it worked extremely well. I had it fully canvassed with a full chest and lighter facing in the sides and along the vents), replacing plastic buttons with horn that I bought on eBay or the fashion district ... Pet peeves of my own: 1) The peak or notch of the lapel being too low down! 2) Low armholes 3) No waist suppression / waist pulling when buttoned 4) Belts with three-piece suits - or belt loops with black tie (GRRR!) 5) Vents that pull open! 6) I have a love for roped sleeve-heads 7) Non-wool/natural fabrics (seasonal, but linen, seersucker, silk, even cotton are natural) 8) The drape!!! Need the right drape. 7:43 - You can get a suit bespoke in Hong Kong, SIngapore, etc that is better quality in material that an off the rack Brioni, Armani, etc. if you can pick the fabric. Tailors in NYC do this, where they have bolts and swatches of whole cloth that you can choose from. ALSO - if you are into Savile Row suits, look off of Savile Row: Conduit St, Jermyn St, Etc. Those tailors are usually newer to it and trying to build up to that "Savile Row" echelon. They have probably apprenticed under the top tailors and are looking to make their name. Still costly, but with a savings of maybe 1,000 GBP or so.
One last personal note: I love trousers with side-tabs. I'm 6'0 and 185lbs, slender athletic ... I wear a 33" waist comfortably depending on the cut +/- 1" (the waist sizes are never true and people don't cut them for your true waist anymore). My chest, under the arms around the pectorals, will measure 40" which is perfect for a 6" drop, but it always looks big off the shoulders. And the waist is always too big then on the jacket. Now, I recommend, highly, checking every jacket and not just looking at size as some are cut big and some small. I find a 38R works for me (still usually take the sides in a bit and shorten the sleeves) - off the rack - but sizes fluctuate off the rack. Always slip it on and check the shoulders, it's the one thing you cannot change! Cheers

When I used to make wedding dresses for clients I would take the grooms out shopping for their suits and they would go for cheap saying it was for one day until I got them to put on a higher end suit and they immediately felt the difference and understood the investement.
I just recently bought my first suit and it was a "hundred dollar suit". (Navy blue from Macy's).. I got it tailored to fit me good for $30 extra. I feel so good and proud wearing it! I'm a college student and that was my price range and needed it fast.... but altogether i can't wait to get my next suit and try to save up for a nicer one.. Preferably one that has a working pocket square! Lol 😆

Made to measure is where its at. Specificallt to your measurements. You can spend $300 at IndoChino ships in 5 weeks from Hong Kong. Or $1000 Brooks Brothers off the rack and it wont fit right... Its all about youre own measurements.

Thrift shopping for suits is a great idea. My 3 favorite suits are all ones I’ve bout second hand. In fact one of them was 3 bucks, for a 3 piece suit! Other new department store suits I’ve bought for 100-200 dollars either broke, or were so uncomfortable that I don’t wear them any more.

Dude, I've been to New York Fashion week, wearing a Zara suit that I didn't even tailor, yet I was getting compliments after compliments on my outfit 😂. 99% of people have no clue, as long as the cut is nice and you don't let them inspect the suit😂😂😂

C'mon Justin. These days one can buy a decent wool suit under $150. As of right now a Michael Kors suit you can buy for $220, second for a half a price, what makes the price $165 a piece, in D&K. I'm not promoting D&K, I just added to my wardrobe 2 beautifully fit Michael Kors suits from that store. That's all. Even I have more than enough suits.

A real class Kiton Napoli suit? Well, to my... "embarrassment" i don't have one, I don't have money to pay extra $80% just for a brand tag. If I'd stumble into a sale, and only I'd stumble into a sale, I would consider to buy another Brioni or Dior. Otherwise, Michael Kors, at the moment, did the trick. One doesn't have to buy 3K suit to feel, look and actually be stylishly dressed. And don't be so touchy on the subject. I just felt the guy fell for your narrative. In his $160 suit, he may look better than you in your 5k Kiton Napoli or me in my best "nothing to brag about" 1k suit... ;) Cheers.

Today I checked out a local tailor here in the Philippines. Their standard suits are at Php 8,000 or about $160. I think I'm gonna give it a try and hope for the best. Thanks Sir Raphael. :)

Just for the record, Joseph A Bank vintage suits are great. 30 or 40 years ago it used to be a great men's store that was destroyed by corporate. If you're vintage shopping just look for the vintage red label. If you see that you've found a great suit from days gone by!

This was so handy to help educate on what to look for in suits. I see all these mass produced suits that are clearly the cheapest made suits for 3-500 dollars. I don't mind the cheaper looking stuff but I don't want to pay more for less.
I personally go shopping when the seasons change. Suit fashions are changing or going out of season and I go to the lesser stores - such as Kohls or JCPennies here in America, and I buy my suits (with pants) for 20-25 dollars because of clearance racks. It may not last for more than 2 years - but at 20 dollars you can quickly cycle through them and get a newer style multiple times a year
The Canali suit you mentioned, I’ve had 3 of them. I still have one that I love and get compliments on. People like touching the arms or shoulders as It feels so smooth and cool to the touch. It feels that way to wear also. The trousers/pants have wider legs than others I’ve worn and feel absolutely superb! It is the most expensive of the three I’ve paid for @£80 from eBay! It is double-breasted. The others were a grey double-breasted and a navy single -breasted. I love the feeling they give me. Goodness knows how good a bespoke suit from Savile Row would feel?! A good suit makes me walk tall. People treat you better too, when you wear a lovely suit.
I’ll be honest, I have never seen a suit for less than $189 at Jos A Bank. And that was $100 off. Best suit I’ve ever bought so far, super 100 wool not stiff at all. Yes it was fused but honestly I don’t find it insulating nearly as much as the polyester one I have.

Great vid, just picked up a nice Canali Milano suit on sale. There is no comparison to one I bought a couple years ago (if that even) for $250. The second I moved my arms up, the entire jacket would move, so that point you made on low cut arms was spot on. You can also feel the glued portions in the jacket.
Would never recommend for anyone to buy a suit for under $500 - at least here in Canada. They are almost just as bad as ones that sell for $100. Even my tuxedo rental for a friends wedding wasn't that great, and it was 'fitted.'
The Canali Milano is a masterpiece (relatively speaking of course, lots of other great companies around) for the price point. The second I put the jacket on, it instantly felt snug, comfortable, and little restriction in movement. At least now I have my old one to compare if my friends ask if there really is a difference.

I have a Burberry suit that costed around 1,200 dollars. I must say it is excellent in fit and quality. I have owned it for about a year or two and it still looks great.

A lot of RUclipsrs tell you that suit is better due to quality, but tend to forget to tell you to buy what you can afford 1st....

A few points: 1. He doesn't mention having a good, old-school tailor at all. An expert tailor can make a guy in an average suit look like James Bond. Details like moving buttons up or down, changing angles/draping, lengthen/shortening a half an inch to fit, anything is doable and the suit will fit like a glove. 2. Fashions don't change fundamentally with suits for real men. Trendiness goes out of fashion all the time to make another sale. 3. The English bespoke suits are what serious professional men should be aiming towards. Mine are made in Wales ($$$ VAT taxes aside...) and whether you're standing, sitting, etc.no-matter-what, it looks perfect 100% of the time. 4. A decent shave/haircut/etc are part of the well put together man. Details demonstrate character and looking like a middle aged rabbi in a wrinkled suit when you're 20 years younger looks terrible.

Your best bet is to just go to J. Press or Brooks Brothers and buy a $1,600 suit off the rack. The price of the suits they make -- by hand in the US out of Italian wool, cashmere and silk -- is nothing if not phenomenal for the superb quality...damn near unbeatable (outside Asia, anyway)
And once a year they have their "Buy 2 for $2,000" annual sale, too.

I remember my first suit in H&M for $100 when i was in U.S. It isnt really that high quality since i just want a suit that i can suit sometimes. Recently during the Covid pandemic, i bought a set in Tokyo worth JPY10,000(original price JPY20,000) around in $100 usd and its way better than the old one that i bought.

I once got a vintage car coat at a thrift shop. When I went to a tailor to sew on a button. I asked how much the coat might sell for, (it was about 1975) the coat, I believe was from the 1940s, and he started off his answer with,”Well, if you could find a wool of this quality...,” then said $250. Keep in mind this was in 1975 or so, when $250 was $250. I don’t think I was paying half that for a nice apartment. With sales discounts (nobody wanted it), I paid 67¢.
This was a delight to watch because the differences are laid out in a matter of fact manner without pulling any punches. This might be over simplifying but I always felt that if you are not getting measured for a suit that will be custom sewn for you, you will be getting a cheap knockoff imitation. Instead, use that $100.00 toward the price of a great suit that you will be proud to own and wear.

I got an Ungaro suit for $20 in a vintage store and looked terrific in it, based on the compliments. I will have second thoughts on spending $1000 even if I could afford it because you can get a good one for $20.

I bought some suits in S Korea (Itaewon) 15 -18 years ago and I still have them. They still fit OK, but to me they're a little out of style. In your opinion, are they worth keeping and having them re-worked to be a little more stylish?

I have a $100 and a $1000 suit. This is all 100% true. If you can afford it, try one out, you won't regret it. My $1000 suit is an off-the-rack Ralph Lauren from Dillard's of all places. Of course the fit isn't perfect being OTR but it fits a whole lot better and is ten times more comfortable than any cheaper suit I've ever owned. And they're made in Canada and not slapped together in some sweatshop in Nicaragua. Well worth the money and I plan on adding many, many more to my collection. I plan on stepping up to RL Purple Label as well one of these days.
oh when I study in fashion school in London, a friend of our teacher works as a handcraft mans tailor in high luxury fashion house for years told us there aren't any different between hand sew and machine sew in terms of finally effect. It just made to measure services and material and artful design make a huge difference in the quality of the garment compare from what you can get for cheaper price brand
Its ultimately just a sign that the garment is likely to be over a higher quality overall, not necessarily that the hand stitched collar is automatically better.

Not many people who work in the fashion industry would drive hone the point of ”buy vintage and not fast fashion, think of the workers at the factory and the environment”. You earn some serious trust for that.
This fall I’ll replace my cheap, worn out gloves with some stylish quality gloves from Fort Belvedere. Only sucks that I live in the EU and have to pay import duty, but they’re probably worth it.
I'm so thankful for Thrift stores, because I'm retired on a fixed income, and I really don't want to spend $1000 to $3000 on a suit when I have other financial responsibilities like the inherited house I have that needs some TLC. So once again I'm so thankful that I'm aware of the good deals from second hand stores, they're a life saver for many wardrobe purchased items I have.
Buying quality items at thrift stores and spending a few bucks to get them tailored is the BEST way to buy men'swear on a budget. Not even a question.
I routinely see suits and sportcoats in the $500-1000 retail range selling for $20-30 at thrift stoes, usually with minimal wear.
Most clothes get donated because they don't get worn, not because they're damaged. This means you can often find clothing in good condition with minimal wear.

Things get intresting when you start talking about 200-400 dollar suits. Some are like overpriced 100 dollar suits (Zara...) while others are build just like a 1000 dollar suit that had too much of the budget in the brand and too little in the rest. Your 400 dollar Suitsupply is typical one that beats the quality of many (fashion brand) suits well in the 1000 dollar price range...

The stiching by machine is all together as suppose the hand stich is has spaces in between.
If you're on a budget, get a suit in the best fabric you can and have it altered by a tailor! A decent tailor can really upgrade the fit and feel of a suit and give you much more bang for your buck, as it were.
Excellent advise although a $100-350.00 suit that is well worn (fits well) can look very good!

Weather permitting, a fine peacoat or fine wool winter coat works perfectly on a cheap suit, it becomes the centerpiece of your look and your confidence helps hide the cheapness of a suit as well

Another thing, try restoring a cheap suit that got wet! never looks the same whilst a good suit you can dry out and lightly press and it still looks great. Packing a cheap suit usually spoils it but a good suit you can pack small ( Inside out and armholes facing ) and it still looks good. better to buy a second hand good suit than a new cheap suit. I have mens tweed jackets that are 60 years old and my favorite evening jacket was a man's one from the late 30's ! Quality NEVER goes out of style and it can make a man. And Don't get me on the subject of shoes !
In Romania, clothing is cheaper because 1 ron(our monetary unit) is around 4.5 euros, not sure about dollars. And here there are some brands wich make suits by hand with only natural fabric, and they are about 80-100 euros. And they are great.
I wish this site was available 40 years ago. I managed to st humble through with worsted wool,moderately narrow lapels, two buttons, double vented and spent $ 300/500 years ago. During my working years I had winter and summer suits ( more poly ) breath ability and comfortable movement were key.

He also puts Jos A Bank on the same level as H&M. That's just not true. The mid level suits at Bank are $400 unless they're on clearance and they're much nicer.
I get my suits custom made in Thailand for $200, high quality cashmere with Thai silk lining. Best fitting suits I’ve worn or my father has worn. They will try to upsell you and overcharge but if your a repeat customer they will do it for that much. If you want the info for my tailor there pm me. They will even give you a guide to measure yourself and send them the info, but they don’t guarantee the fit in that case. They have mine on file so unless I gain weight it’s perfect.
Also, I was able to haggle better because my wife is Thai, but they said they will match the deal for anyone I send their way.

I only wear TITEM suits. Handmade in Hungary, each of them are tailored for the future owner. Tisza shoes are also quality, but you can find cheaper, real leather quality Polish shoes also here for your outfit.

If someone want good fashion-forward suit, they should look for Saint Laurent/Celine (anything Hedi Slimane, really), or Tom Browne. Saint Laurent is made by Zegna, construction is very good, but, as you said, they all are skinny fit, and armholes are tiny there, everything is quite restrictive, but you look like a celebrity in them.
I love to shop vintage, and I've found some beautiful wool pea coats, but with jackets, as well as pants and shirts, almost everything is too short for me. Jacket sleeves are often 2" - 4" too short. Most jackets are sized "R" (regular) and I always need long, which are generally hard to find. I tried on about a dozen vintage jackets yesterday and only two were close to fitting nicely, but I would have liked at least another inch on the arm length. With pants it's less of a problem, because there are usually more of them that I can sift through (and even when they are marked "30 long" the "30" can vary from 2" short to 4" too long). Long sleeve button-up shirts are almost impossible for me to find. I can get the right length only when I go into the XXL sizes, but then there is about 6" or more extra fabric around the centre.

4:53 Pet peeve of mine, too!! Nothing you can do to raise the armhole, even if it were worth it. I've bought some inexpensive suits that I know I can do this with that won't be too costly of complex - some of them I've done myself by hand. These can be off the rack or second-hand (TIP: second hand suits at thrift stores - look at the stores located in upscale neighborhoods, you'll find some very quality pieces for $20-50). I've made my own Halloween costumes since I was 10 and am self taught, but I have successfully: raised sleeves, brought in the waist through the seat of trousers, raise the back of a jacket, made functioning buttons/surgeon's cuffs, tapered through the leg, brought in the jacket side/waist suppression, pick stitcked, slightly tapered jacket sleeves, removed the buttonhole stitches and re-stitched to bind the edges (going for the cut, then stitch and not stitch then cut, and even removed old canvassing and relined with sewing facing I found of wool (not sure that's a good procedure, but it was half canvassed and the fusing was loose, so I removed what I could and replaced the removed pieces, stitching them in with what was not removable and anchoring it with an invisible pick stitch ... sure that's not how you do it, but it worked extremely well. I had it fully canvassed with a full chest and lighter facing in the sides and along the vents), replacing plastic buttons with horn that I bought on eBay or the fashion district ...
Pet peeves of my own:
1) The peak or notch of the lapel being too low down!
2) Low armholes
3) No waist suppression / waist pulling when buttoned
4) Belts with three-piece suits - or belt loops with black tie (GRRR!)
5) Vents that pull open!
6) I have a love for roped sleeve-heads
7) Non-wool/natural fabrics (seasonal, but linen, seersucker, silk, even cotton are natural)
8) The drape!!! Need the right drape.
7:43 - You can get a suit bespoke in Hong Kong, SIngapore, etc that is better quality in material that an off the rack Brioni, Armani, etc. if you can pick the fabric. Tailors in NYC do this, where they have bolts and swatches of whole cloth that you can choose from. ALSO - if you are into Savile Row suits, look off of Savile Row: Conduit St, Jermyn St, Etc. Those tailors are usually newer to it and trying to build up to that "Savile Row" echelon. They have probably apprenticed under the top tailors and are looking to make their name. Still costly, but with a savings of maybe 1,000 GBP or so.
One last personal note: I love trousers with side-tabs. I'm 6'0 and 185lbs, slender athletic ... I wear a 33" waist comfortably depending on the cut +/- 1" (the waist sizes are never true and people don't cut them for your true waist anymore). My chest, under the arms around the pectorals, will measure 40" which is perfect for a 6" drop, but it always looks big off the shoulders. And the waist is always too big then on the jacket. Now, I recommend, highly, checking every jacket and not just looking at size as some are cut big and some small. I find a 38R works for me (still usually take the sides in a bit and shorten the sleeves) - off the rack - but sizes fluctuate off the rack. Always slip it on and check the shoulders, it's the one thing you cannot change! Cheers
