- Imagine returning from a week’s vacation only to see a total stranger had taken over your home and had stolen most of your stuff.
One Utah family claims that’s what happened to them after they found a squatter who had been living in their apartment for seven days, and the neighbors didn’t seem to notice.
Genesis Gonzalez and her one-year-old son had been visiting family for a week in Spanish Fork, but when she came back Thursday night, she saw something weird.

Not a SQUATTER, that’s a TRESPASSING CRIMINAL!!!
Exactly! 😡
Not just trespassing, but thieving… cleaned out their apartment, including wedding ring? Does that amount add up to grand theft? Lock her azz up!
that was not squatting, it was a very slow reckless robbery and vandalism
Something needs to be done about squatters so they know there will be serious consequences to there actions
Something needs to be done about what creates the need to squat in the first place.
@@haroldwhite5761 Dishonesty?
I can’t imagine anyone doing this. The level of entitlement is beyond comprehension.
Millions crossing the border without a piece of paper in hand before leaving their house.. why can’t you imagine this?
@@kristinesharp6286millions? You ignoramus!
@@sharonra2000 are you telling me less than 2 million have ever crossed the border without a visa in hand prior to travel? Really? And they are coming from places where you just squat and build some sort of rough shelter or the government gives you are home at little or no cost. There was a guy on TikTok encouraging this very thing. Soon the coyote services will include this service. We are getting to the point in the country where you don’t need to be directly responsible for your debts and expenses (school loans) and people are starting to be desperate enough to just take what they want seeing others just getting with a hand out. The vets and students moved to make way for foreign national centers. Check the U.S. customs and border protection numbers.
@@sharonra2000 You are SO WRONG. IT IS MILLIONS!!! Not to mention that probably more than a MILLION are CRIMINALS. Murderers, Rapists, Violent Thieves and Terrorists! Did you vote to let them in???
Please, take off your blinding dark democrat glasses and begin to see the TRUTH. Plus, (for your own sake) don’t call names when YOU are in the WRONG. It just makes YOU look ignorant.
@@kristinesharp6286Because some people do not even think of doing something like that to other people. That’s why.
You didn't think to ask any follow up questions like what happened to the squatter and did your landlord help? Will your items be recovered and will she be sent to jail??? I wish people knew how to do good reporting these days but sadly NO!
I was thinking the same thing! The reporter didn't even mention if the thief/burglar was removed from the apartment or arrested! Not good reporting.
Doesn't matter if they arrest her. They will release her after booking and set a court date which she won't attend and be gone 😢 No restitution because she's homeless and is a criminal existing from crime to crime.
@@bigbadbubba099 That’s some scary shit.
They need to stop with these squatter laws, and re-do the law because it’s a new day🫡🤗
This isn’t even remotely covered under squatter laws. The door was clearly broken which shows signs of forced entry and the apartment complex is the only one who can sign a lease with anyone unlike the case with single family homes and random private rental deals.
@@HiThisIsMine I don’t believe that “private renter deals” story for one minute! No one is THAT STUPID! That CROOKED but NOT that stupid.
@@4KindnessGal - you don’t believe that it’s more difficult to verify a lease with individual homeowners vs an apartment complex which always is the lease holder?… okay.. cool
@@HiThisIsMine No not really. All you have to do is go to the PVA (Property Valuators Office) or the Department of Deeds. It’s public information. MANY Counties have this available online. In this day of just so MANY criminals a person should take the time to at least try and make sure the person taking your money is legit. So no it’s really not difficult at all.
I think squatter laws are for abandoned places or meant to protect a person that is legally staying somewhere, from landlords who themselves don't follow the law. Not for cases like this where they commit a crime and break into an occupied residence.
It’s burglar caught in the home. It better be in custody
I would bet money she just stole, did damage and just walked away! I would bet money on it.
She was guilty of breaking and entering. You have the right to defend yourself in your home from a home invader using deadly force if needed. Shalom
I guess I am lucky to live where the neighbors would notice immediately and take action.
Well was she arrested for breaking and entry and grand theft?
Nope. Free to go.
They didn't go into those details they didn't go into those details because maybe it depends on where they're at cuz I live here in Layton I guarantee they would be locked up and arrested for breaking and entering and Criminal Trespass guaranteed they don't play around in most areas in Utah now where this is at in Salt Lake they didn't go into details so we don't have that information @@Karoke77
That's not a squatter, that's an intruder
They are ALL INTRUDERS!
That’s not a squatter. That’s a burglar that stayed too long.
The suspect told the wife that the apartment was hers now. That's a squatter.
@@mssmiles0503 the absconding and sales of their personal belongings with forceful entry of removing doorknob makes her a burglar first. It was an inhabited dwelling.
The definition of squatter: a person who unlawfully occupies an uninhabited building or unused land.
So now what? What charges are being filed? Where is the squatter? Was she taken to jail? Great reporting 🙄
According to a different TV report on another station, Harding was booked for criminal trespassing. The family still has not gotten their belongings back.
The made the charges as low as they could. What about the THEFT?
@@4KindnessGal Charges may be added as evidence is gathered. What's your hurry?
Why are you calling this person a squatter.
More appropriately this was a burglar.
The suspect said the apartment was hers now to the wife. That's why.
It’s trendy and gets clicks. Unfortunately it trivializes the horror people go through who are victims to actual squatters.
I guess we all have to get alarms and cameras now
With MILLIONS of Criminals, Terrorists and Mental Patients running around, you bet we do!
Charge the person with Breaking and Entering, and theft. Not just a squatter.
This has become so far beyond ridiculous. Call the " squatter hunter"-the next booming employment option bcuz of this BS.
What’s with the destruction of the cabinets? Why did she ruin the house? These squatters are getting out of control!
It’s CRIMINALS!
This squatter business is out of hand!
Should have called the police as soon as she saw the door and NOT knocked on the door
If I came home to someone in my house, there would be blood 🩸
This has gotten beyond insane and needs to be stopped completely in its tracks now....beond insane and stupid .....
Idiotic that they couldn't say if this woman was arrested!
That's why I no longer watch our local news. Now I just look at newsfeds that interest me. This feed tells me reporters aren't reporting the whole story. Plus, they are woke. The woman broke in. She's a criminal.
just start suing the government for allowing it to go on when it happens to you
Just try that and see what happens.
@@4KindnessGal when it happens or if i will
@@4KindnessGal im not a coward they don't scare me lol
So, did they arrest the thief? INCREDIBLE!
When my friend goes on vacation(he lives in Florida). He has someone stay at his home while he is gone. For this very reason.
What a horrible person.
There is a movie where humans drop off all criminals on a different planet to live with each other. All these crimes make me wonder if we should be doing the same.
It's Twilight Zone Times.
Other countries ARE DOING THIS!!! They are sending them HERE!
It's easier to steal a house than a car in Utah.
Outrageous!
The criminal will be out on the same day and into a new place by evening.
Do this to me, your existence ends. 1872 Dodge City, KS rules, baby.
Good for you! Now you're talking old school ways of doing things. Protecting wats your's.🤔🤗
😕and the neighbors didnt call the police??..waow.
These take over laws need to be revoked. Squatters should be subject to immediate arrest and removal.
Well, that was an interesting HALF of the story - what happened after they called the police? Was the squatter arrested? Did the couple get any of their stuff back?
Why not tell the complete story?
NVM - I found the details on another station's website - Harding was booked for criminal trespassing, and the family still has not gotten their belongings back.
@@omi_god they were sold or trashed.
90% of police: We can't do anything, its a civil matter for court.
But she was attacked. SELF DEFENSE (outsmart the criminals).
That is the exact reason I will never ever go out of my house for longer than 20 hours 24 would be too many. I am not leaving my house anymore and I will not go on vacation. I will not these people are nuts. They have lost their minds they will move into anybody’s house, they don’t care. They know that they do not have the right to do it but they do it anyway it’s insane how people are behaving absolutely insane.
why are they calling this squatting?? it s clearly robbery! stupid news!
If it happened in my state, that home invader would have free housing in jail for the foreseeable future.
We should be low key and keep residence seems still occupied when we go on vacation and not telling everyone especially on social media.
Are there no security measures in place?
There are some, but the very operative word gets u up and out!
@@evemurton1133what in the holy hell does that mean?
@@evemurton1133 Your post makes no sense.
I think someone who knew this family told the CRIMINAL that the apartment would be empty a few days. This was not a house with no car in the driveway with an overgrown yard. This was an apartment empty for just a few days. I would watch for my clothes and my babies clothing on the people I knew!
@@4KindnessGal The perp left items in front of the door, and waited to see whether anyone moved them. When no one did, she knew it was safe to break in.
You don't need to come up with different explanations or conspiracy theories about "someone else" - the video explains what happened.
How interesting that they don’t show a picture of the suspect or offer a description. 🤨
Let’s get the correct phrasing for this incident. It was a home invasion and theft. It’s my opinion that using the term “squatting” softens the reality of the situation.
People need to learn Utahs castle docrine laws.
The laws don't allow the use of deadly force unless you or someone in the home is under IMMINENT threat of deadly violence. If it's just a squatter, your castle doctrine rights consist of calling the cops.
Yes in this case. They were in imminent danger especially when the lady starting screaming at the homeowners she coulda easily put her down and said it was castle doctrine.
@@NaviTheNavajo If there was no weapon present, there was no imminent threat. Just yelling at someone is not an imminent threat of harm. It appears you have a limited understanding of what the castle doctrine consists of. We have no duty to retreat, and we are allowed to use deadly force in defense against an imminent threat of violence. Yelling is not that.
@@omi_god whatever our presidents are felons it's lawlessness out here so who really cares
@@omi_god you might want to actually read the law on the books in Utah. UT code 76 2 404.
Update please 😮
Government respecting the 2nd Amendment rights of citizens would solve the squatter problem.
Squatters have more rights than the property owner!
It's good to have onsite manager
sooooo....what happened to the squatter?
The CRIMINAL was arrested for Trespassing only. I read it in someone’s comment. I don’t know if it is true or not.
And what did the police even do? I'm sure nothing. Poor lady, too much stress for her at 7 months pregnant
I recommend adding in a second deadbolt, higher than the first. (Make sure to give a key copy to landlord) I'm not a fan of the intrusiveness of Ring doorbell cams, but if you live around a lot of other people (apartment complex) it may be worth it. With current situation, people are becoming desperate & too many illegals are here & NONE of them will respect our laws.
Was she arrested? What happened?
What will happen?nothing these people need to go to prison I am afraid for my grandchildren to grow up here
"What will happen" depends on what a Utah judge decides. The accused has been arrested and charged with criminal trespass. The cops haven't said what other charges, if any, will eventually be laid against the arrestee.
@@omi_godGive her a break. She has valid fears. Although in this case I think someone told the Criminal those people would be away for a few days.
It’s not like it was a house with no car in the drive and an overgrown yard. It was an apartment and it was just a few days.
@@4KindnessGal Why not pay attention to what the video actually says happened? As it points out, the person who broke in knew there was no one home. No one had to "tell" her.
@@omi_god Exactly what did the video say which contradicted what I wrote? No one had to tell her? Well what were the indicators that they were gone? What brilliant deductive reasoning did the criminal use?
@@omi_god By the way, I OBVIOUSLY paid attention. So why did you say that? I think you just don’t like that someone pointed out that the criminal was probably given that information.
Welcome to the United States!
why shotguns were invented.
Wow that is just heartbreaking and sad I don't give criminals an inch we do have security and we make it known.
People who do this don't give a f*** about you and they will steal your baby clothes and your wedding ring.

Prayers important. It reminds us that this s*** does happen and it has its impact.
If you pray stop using foul language. You hurt the cause of Christ.
What happened? Did she get arrested?
The cheek of these people
Hope they had renters insurance
Was she arrested?
That wouldn't work with me, sometimes I don't leave the apartment for a couple of weeks or even look outside the door. Plus I have two deadbolts on the door and one has an electronic lock that can only be opened with my phone when I'm not home. It has no external keyhole.
Nice security, sad though that we have to resort to doing all that to protect our homes.🤔😏
Where was maintenance or manager, they never noticed the door knob was removed? Also it pays to know your neighbors and let them know when you will be out town.
It was probably a neighbor or an acquaintance who told the criminal that they would be away for a few days. This was an apartment, not a house with no car in the driveway and an overgrown yard. How did the criminal KNOW they were away?
How do they get in??????
This story left more questions than answers. CBS needs to work on their journalism skills.
Where’s the rest of the story? Come on KUTV 2. That was half a$$ reporting
Exactly 💯, so is that considered a full report? BS 🤔🤨
when you break into a home and steal their property it is not "squatting".
Thank you government for allowing these criminals to have the freedom to break these laws without any consequences..
So was she arrested?
I wonder how this CRIMINAL knew that these people were not in their apartment? Probably someone who knew they were going away for a few days.
They are going to need a go-fund me. I hope the robber gets a long sentence. Things are really out of hand.
Why didn’t the apartment manager notice this?!
What’s more shocking is that people will actually go and sign up for these push alerts…
Im sorry did they say the Coroner's wagon is parked outside 😮
Im afraid of just walking into the wrong apartment, how can squatter's not have heart attacks everytime they hear a sound? I would be a nervous wreck in someone's home without their knowledge for just 2 mins!
That is so scarry! This psycho people entering other people's houses.
Needs to stop.
How about the landlord what are they saying?
So was she arrested? Charged with theft, and assuault?
Report as a robbery.
That’s why I always have a trusty house sitter
It’s called breaking and entering.
Well wait, what happened? Did the lady get arrested?
She needs to install cameras.
Wow l can't believe it for real what happened 2 them Crazy Woman For Real 😡
Disgusting woman. Stealing from a young family, especially something irreplaceable like a wedding ring. Ransacking their entire home, stealing baby items, and then acting so aggressive towards the mother. I'm sure she'll be prosecuted to the full extend of the law. 🙄
Are you kidding??? That is not true at all! Why did you even say that? It makes no sense at all.
@@4KindnessGal - Did we not watch the same video? 0:05 - 'Stole most of your stuff'. 1:07 - They talk about the woman screaming and being aggressive. 1:37 - 'He saw his apartment had been ransacked. 1:51 - She stole baby clothes and the mother's wedding ring. How on Earth are you questioning what I wrote? I'm not asking facetiously, I'm truly curious.
Im confused- how is this a squatter instead of a burglar? So if I decide to break into someone’s house, maybe rummage around for anything valuable enough to steal, and get caught- I can just quick yell ”Squatter!” and it’s all okey dokey?
Sweet! Weekend plans!
Sure sounds like it would to me. 🤔

So what you are saying is nobody heard or saw anything?? SMH. That sucks for the people who really live there. Hope she enjoys jail where you can live for free and get three meals a day.
🤔in a apartment and nobody see that person broke in not neighbors, janitorial, manager wow

that's more than squatting.... thats robbery ... a felony... horrible reporting from this channel ....

It’s NOT funny.
I wore my ring through pregnancies. I figured I can take it off later if I do swell up. If your doctor objects in case you need emergency care, ask them to adhesive tape the ring onto your finger in the event surgery or resuscitation is needed.
I saw another CBS Thumbnail with a " Sawfish " / Turn that " Squatter " Over to " the Sawfish " He' l know what to do !
