Based on his prior tax bill and that formula he was being taxed based on a $60,000 house so I expect his corrected tax bill is still going to be substantially higher than before because his home is worth way more than $60,000 now, in fact it was worth double that when he bought it.

Imo you pay property taxes when you sell, rent, and buy and it should be significantly more than they are now, but the yearly tax thing is weird to me. If you are considering capital gains taxes when you buy/sell a property then you shouldn’t also be ‘renting’ it from the county. Technically you are renting the land from the county if anything, but that the taxes you pay on a property goes up when the home goes up really hurts people in a way it shouldn’t. Especially when so many rich people /companies get so much out of it when the property tax is such a small % of the value they extract. That being said the taxes usually DO go to help the community a lot more than other taxes. It often funds schools and other things, which imo is wrong because it harms education in cheaper areas.

Why would the state do that? They make a lot of money doing this. Why stop? Only way to get rid of this form of theft is to put it on a voting ballot. The problem is too many people are complacent and lazy to make a change.

Yeah, the myth that Americans dont pay taxes at high rates like other countries is a total lie. Americans have a massive tax bill when you look at all the hidden fees and taxes they pay day to day.
Lucky you.
Housing is expensive. I live in the Midwest in the United States and about a mile from me we have a stretch of turn of the century brick mansions. Gorgeous houses that are historically protected. They’re million dollar houses and I know their tax are in the $6-10k range because I’ve looked them up before. But I’m in the Midwest where everything is relatively cheap. If I was in a bigger city on the East or West coat, I could easily see the taxes on those houses being in the $20-30k range.
They saw that 120K Red Corvette in the driveway and said, "We got a live one".

That is insane that he did not get help at the assessor's office. He would have had to have a huge construction project to get that kind of hike. Absolutely horrendous and shameful taxpayer service.
They told him "Everybody's tax went up." Made my blood boil. Did they not event look at his problem?
I swear they trying to tax houses out from eveeyone who manages to have one.
They want you in soviet style apartment blocks and on public transit
I live in New Jersey. I live in a ranch house like this one, but we have a basement. Our taxes are $6500 a year (seriously!) $4500 of that goes to the schools for the kids we don't have. I hope this guy gets this straightened out!
What the hell are property taxes. That's theft. What the hell. Why after buying your home do you owe anyone money?
Those taxes are for the single American women with 8 kids. You must work to provide life for others. You are a SLAVE
Every adult, homeowner or not, should pay their fair share of, what is now property taxes! Why, because
every adult can utilize police, fire, schools, garbage pickup, highways, etc. This way, these expenses
would be shared by everyone & should eliminate property taxes!

Because the cabal is in charge of literally everything!
U pay taxes on every dollar multiple times from phone bill, utilities, gas, merchant goods, wages, etc. wouldn't it be nice to actually own something the Government can't take away.
As long as you pay yearly taxes on your home it doesn't belong to you , even after being paid off 100% , there should be a one time tax when you purchase the house and that's it
Mistakes happen. That's not the problem. The problem is that after the mistake was brought to their attention, they gave him the runaround. It wasn't until the media got involved that anything changed. If the media doesn't pick up this story, then he still owes $30,000.
My taxes went up 152% in Cook County.
I began to file an appeal, but I was told it would not be processed.
The processing window was from January 1st, 2024, to January 2nd, 2024.
I believe we will soon be seeking a class action lawsuit.
Assessments are a lie!! They should be illegal!! These assessors are liars and criminials and should be in jail!!
In NY State the assessors literally come into your home and assess your quality of life.
The more pride of ownership exhibited the more you pay in taxes.
IF you decline their entry your taxes will match the highest tax within the district you reside.
They are doing it on purpose.
The goal it to take their homes...He got lucky.
The sad thing is some people paid that double digit tax. Will they get refunded, ehh.
Chicago media and people are blind. The real story hear is that if the house was worth 1 million, the local gov't can charge you 35k for property tax. Absolutely rediculous!
“Ridiculous”
Well Dems want to make the rich pay right?
Government said it was worth 1 mil even though the real value is 150k ish.
The Assessors admitted there was an error calculating values of some 4400 properties in the area. 🤷♂️
exactly. and the govt can declare its value to be whatever they want
They were hoping he would just pay it or sell.
I think they want to take ahold of that home, so they can rent it and profit
That extra money is going to the Tahoe Tiffany Heynard fund in Dolton for more billboards and wigs!!!
😂😂😂😂
Mark Scott, you are not wrong.👏

Is so not funny because Dolton and Chicago Heights are two separate cities in Illinois… as usual raycists never take a day off.
Smile with Equality..
the fact that you have to call a news station in order to have someone fkking LOOK AT THE ISSUE. are you fukking kidding me??? nobody does their damn job. this should have been a red flag that employees relayed to supervisors and got researched.
This happened to me years ago. I just bought my home and the city sent me an assessment for 3x the value of what I paid for the home. It was highway robbery. Fortunately the office did not give me the run-around and they sent someone out who gave me a fair assessment of almost exactly what I paid for the home (it was still a little over what I paid, but it was close enough that I was fine with that).
TRUMP 2024 OR ELSE
I want to know how many people panicked and did something stupid because the assessor's office didn't just say "so sorry, our mistake, we're sending updated info."
TERRIBLE government incompetence!
Even if your house is worth 1M dollars, your property tax should be minimal.
I agree.. Due to Californians coming to Bend OR., my friends home he spent $77,000 to build, is now " assessed" at 1.2 million... He might have to move from HIS home now due to sky high property taxes due to Californians moving there and raising the cost of housing......
Yup at that rate in 30 years you've paid for your house twice.
Boise is the same, but even at a million dollars the taxes would be around $6000 not 30,000. something's very fishy there in Illinois.
At 35k per year on a million dollar property, you’ve paid the entire value to the state in 28 years. They’d steal the value of the home before a 30 year mortgage is paid off at this tax rate and you’re still out the interest money. Insane.
Yes, like 0%
If not now, but when would you all like to admit that taxation is theft?
This comment makes no sense. You drive on roads, you have schools, you can drink water from your house, and more. How do you think that was paid to create?
@@michellem6826 I’ve heard that argument before. My point is this is just another way showing us that we are all being taxed to death. I hope you can wrap your mind around the concept of taxation and realize the gravity of the situation we all find ourselves in today.
@@michellem6826 I drive on roads I have been forced to build so the government can easily send armed men with weapons to my house when ever they feel like it say after a property tax hike. @@CyndiP1111 taxation is a needed in a civilized society to care for the community. I don’t support exploitation but I don’t think only people with money deserve medical treatment, homes, schools, and more. I hope you can wrap your mind around that concept.
@@michellem6826 and while some taxation may be needed to provide for the common good, it should not be oppressive. If you study history, you know that the men and women rose up against taxes on tea, whisky and stamps to name a few. Back then there were no taxes on income and property and while that was a much harder time for people to live in, they endured, worked hard and now we find ourselves living in the world today.
Taxation today is fueled by greed and corruption and stealing all of your time and energy so you can live a meager existence. I think that we can do better than that, in fact I KNOW it.
I’m not here to argue with you personally. It’s obvious that you must enjoy paying all of the taxes that you do and if you feel that way, I’m not going to attempt to change your mind about it.
Have you ever had a bold vision of the future?
I HAVE, and it looks really good.
Devastating! If he had not contacted the NEWS they would have NEVER taken accountability. This has happened to so many others & it's an intentional scam. Homeowners BE AWARE!
I don't understand the system in the US, if you have to keep paying property taxes then is the property really yours? isn't that still state property?
The first they need to do is get rid of incompetent city workers, they work there but won't help and act like it's normal for this man's taxes to go up that high.
Disgusting... Taxpayers should be protected..
TRUMP 2024 OR ELSE
No taxation without representation!
Government won't care unless you get the media involved.
No mistake: Cooks County was caught attempting property theft. A criminal lawsuit is the only defense ( because the County will only regroup and then come for your property again).
Mistakes made should be few…not 4,400. When people being these mistakes to the property assessor’s office they should seriously look into it instead of giving people the run around. Crook County!
Exactly. I work in an assessors office in another state.. There is no way 4,400 properties would go out with that kind of an error. W e have data analyst wizards that would have raised the red flag long before the tax notices go out.
Property tax (on a primary residence) is unconstitutional, and collecting it from folks who can’t afford it is violence.
Edit: a few friends in the replies seem to think I give a fuck what they have to say, lol.
Property tax is a state issue. The constitution focused pretty squarely on the national government and restricted almost nothing from the state governments. Definitely didn't say they couldn't tax people.
It is state law. This allows a county to fire polices schools roads.
It’s not violence
I think you need to look up the definition of "constitutional", and "violence" while you're at it.
🤣😂😂
There was no "error" this is on purpose. People like me warned other people this was going to happen 6 years ago, but you all laughed at me.
Why is this happening? The economy is that desperate

One of the few things that California got right was Prop 13, which was done by the voters not politicians. It says the base tax value of your house is what you paid for it and it cannot go up more than 1% a year unless you made major improvements. Even then that only adds to the base value.
Income TAX….property TAX….sales TAX….and now our county is implementing an equipment tax for commercial lawn mowers, tractors etc. Its getting beyond ridiculous. I bought a property two years ago to live on and operate our small business out of. The property was is disrepair. Im handy, so I spent approximately 18 months, out of pocket, fixing it up for my family. County came by this year and tripled our taxes. We didnt change the use of the property, didnt rezone etc, just cleaned up, painted, new doors/windows, built a fence etc etc. i now pay mthe equivalent of hundreds of dollars per month to the county because I didnt want to live in a dump. Its sickening
My dad when he was alive, built a wrap around porch on his home. They increased his taxes till it was equal to paying for that porch every single year. Punishment for improvements. How stupid is that. That is why some people just leave it as is.
Yes the outside of my home looks from the hood, wooden pallets over the windows and garbage everywhere (junk) but I only renovate the inside. I worked as a real estate agent. I know how these assessors games are. I could care less what the front of the house looks like but the back and the inside is gorgeous.😂❤ and they lowered my tax bill to only 1300 because they said it looked like a crap
@@rrrealqueen You're lucky they didn't cite you to clean it up. That's their next opportunity to add to their coffers.
A few years ago in Santa Monica, CA, they wanted to add a VIEW tax depending on if you could see the ocean/beach from your windows. Now you see homeless encampments from your windows.
My wife and I bought a 35 acre property with a house and a few outbuildings. We added a 1/2 acre pond a little over a year ago. Our assesed value went up $ 274,000 on our next tax bill. Not up to $274,000..... up that much from original assessment. That's a joke.
Sounds like the county wasn’t willing to look into the issue or acknowledge an issue until the news got involved.
Utterly shameful.
It's time for the government and local government remember what Americans fought the British for. Take your taxes to your grave.
Even if the house was worth a million .... 30 thousand is still insane
So glad for this news channel investigates. They didn’t care and was not trying to do anything for this man. Shameful.
Why don’t they make a mistake the other way? Property tax bill for 2024: $1. It’s always in their favor!
They never make a MISTAKE in your favor.
The town employees thank you for their big raises this year.
A friend of mine who lives just outside of Chicago told me last year his 2/2 condo he paid $185k for about five years ago was assessed at something like $2.2 million dollars. He said whoever did that mixed it up because of the 2/2. He the city or whoever realized it when the condo next door to him same thing 2/2 just sold for $220k.
That's what they do add zeros... Demons they are.
This is why I keep on top of my county tax assessors office. I am locked in for age 65 and over but they have other discounts and exemptions which I qualified for now that retired and living on social security. Whatever county you live in call them or stop in. Very worth it.
With this kind of incompetency they may "correct" the bill by assessing a higher value and raising the bill. Folks need to get out of crook county immediately. RUN, don't walk. My home in Lake County Indiana also saw a higher tax bill this year. It went from about $1,400 a year to a little over $1,700 but it's cheaper then IL, and my home has 3 bedrooms an attic, first floor, & basement on a 1 & a half lot. I am so glad that I left Illinois in 2006, and I have not looked back.
The electric, gas, and insurance companies pull the same scamming bs in Illinois. The whole state is done.
Taxes are a scam . I live in Austin Texas. My house is a 3 bedroom, 1100 sq ft worth about 250,000 dollars. I pay over 5,000 per year in property taxes. And FOR WHAT....???
Me too!.......my taxes went from 80 dollars to over 160 dollars! I'm appalled!
Yep. Me too. Left Cook County and moved over the border to Lake County in 2018.
Best thing I ever did. My taxes have gone up $600; mostly to pay for that new High School.
The issue is everyone with a mortgage who had this is going to see the payment go up for the 30k tax bill they will likely see $3000 additional a month added to escrow payments for this year.
