me: oh what a nice video to watch at my study break me sees the length: oh no me eventually: you know what a half an hour break with some tea is okay ah i just want to survive this exam/committee week phew but i believe i can manage, good luck y'all guys whatever you are busy with, have a nice productive week!
The amount of engagement you have with your audience is insane considering the sheer amount of people commenting. You're super helpful and responsive and all the while managing a PhD. Just thought I'd thank you for being such an amazing youtuber :)
Your ' How to study effectively' video was how i accidentally discovered your channel and since then I have watched almost all of your videos, your enthusiasm is contagious, and your vlogs and videos have helped me in strange ways...your doing great work!!!
I've only started watching your videos, like a week ago actually, but you've inspired me to try harder in school. Your life is what I want my life to be like in the future. I'm currently doing my undergrad at a University in Canada and my program is Computation Systems with a specialization in Computer Science, and another specialization in Software Engineering, with a minor in Biology. It's a bit of a mouthful but I kind of like that. Hopefully one day I'll do my masters thesis at Waterloo University (which is like THE computer science school in Canada) and then maybe I'll study abroad to do my PhD. I never thought I'd be able to do it myself, but just watching your life, it's so much how I want my life to be and you've inspired me to try harder in school so I can actually achieve this goal. You've also inspired me to get back into reading, just general reading not textbooks but like novels, so that's cool too! Thanks for being cool, thanks for inspiring me to try harder, and thanks for being you. :)
Free food in academic events is my favorite part, too!! Your Wednesday deep reflexion was meaningful. The gift exchange was hilarious! And your family time was so cute. Finally, merry Christmas to you!! And... If I have to mention the most outstanding things of this year, got to know you is in the top 5. Endless thanks for sharing your PhD journey with us!! You've been a role model, even when you're in science and others, like me, in social sciences.
I love your videos documenting a week in your life. Its a structure that seems to work quite well for your style and every time it pops up in my feed I either watch it or make a note to. Thanks for sharing!
Hi Simon, I think it's really cool you found your niche here on RUclips whilst giving us an insight to your life. Rationally speaking your target audience is in a niche market, so I wouldn't worry too much about getting subscribers, and in the end of the day you shouldn't live for that. My suggestion, as you probably figured out for yourself: Do what you do want to do, so that RUclips becomes a perk that goes with it. I consider you a great ambassador for people who want to know what it can be like to study, whilst supplying the world with useful knowledge, which is what you do. I sincerely hope you succeed with accomplishing something related to your studies, so that society might benefit from it. Kind regards, Leon
Hey Simon, honestly no idea where your videos came from just popped up in my recommended a week ago. Whatever the changes youtube made is working with your Chanel, great content man keep it up if you can haha!
Please do more, I love this format/ vlogging style. I know you busy with your theses and PhD work so prioritise that and your choir but do make more vlogs! YOU alongside Jake Wright have inspired me to actually start trying in school and I'm predicted straight 8s and maybe 9s :D
As a Physics PhD student in America, I just want to thank you for your vlogs. I appreciate the way you depict life as a PhD student, especially with the view into your singing. Please do continue to include aspects of life outside of your research because I think it is important to show the world that we are human too. We cannot just constantly do research without some break. We do sometimes sleep in or forget meetings. I think sometimes people have a view of scientists as machines and that is simply not the case. Congratulations on all your recent RUclips success and I hope you find time to continue to make videos! Also good luck with your research!
I really enjoy your videos Simon, all of them! You motivate and inspire me so much so thank you for everything! And remember that what you do, makes people happy :)
Dude these are so awesome!! As a second year college student and serial procrastinator, it's both very inspiring and cathartic to see you on the grind over there. Happy holidays from Alaska!!
I feel you on the R front. I've had an entire module dedicated to using it for ecology and immunology codes this semester and it's been... interesting to say the least!
Simon I'm a first year doing maths and climate science msci at Exeter love your content and your discipline inspiring, looking forward to seeing you around campus talking into a camera then watching the footage here! Haha
These weekly vlogs are so much more enjoyable imo and I wouldn't be surprised if we see more and more daily vloggers switch to that format because let's be honest, it's probably a healthier way of doing this + produces continuity. Props for staying ahead of the curve Simon!
The honesty at the end of Wednesday was super engaging and whenever you look like you're having lots of fun the video just seems to fly by. Great work, hope you get the code working, get some sleep
Your videos are always intriguing. I don't know how you manage to create balance between all the things you are doing. What I have really been enjoying about your videos are the context you give. I am thinking of graduate school, but I have not yet decided what I want to study.
"say something interesting" Me : The Mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell Simon : The Mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell Top Notch Memeing
this was pretty good simon! I do agree, something in youtubes algorithm has made your channel bigger. TBH, i am not even sure how i got started watching your videos, you just popped up as a suggested channel. I must say, i enjoy them! Keep up the good work.
I don't even know how I found you, whether it be a chain of watch nexts or the recommended. I do find your discipline inspiring as an undergrad and wish you the best for the new year.
As a simple A Level student this genuinely is one of the most interesting peeks into the life of a university student I think I have ever seen, I love it :D. I also love the whole style of take it as it comes, and the way of making a PHD in atmospheric physics amazingly entertaining.
JingleJam woohoo! I just started watching your videos last week and I've got to say I'm loving them. As a physics major in the states, its great fun to see what a PhD student has to go through day-to-day. Keep up the great work!
personally I love the chapel choir/singing bits - brings back a lot of fond memories of days as a chorister. *lie down* *try not to cry* ... *cry a lot*
I know that feeling, I hate it too when people hand out stuff on campus! Best method is to avoid eye contact and just walk by as if nothing was there haha :D
Always felt like we'd really get on as people and you seemed like the kind of guy I'd be friends with - then realised you're from Bath too so that would explain it! Loving the weekly videos :)
Simon, as much as I do love your videos and you give me so much motivation to do my own work and pursue my personal ambitions... RUclips will last for a long time if not forever. Your PhD, however, will not. We will be here when you decide to and to not make videos. Focus on your work and enjoying your life away from RUclips. Last thing that I think any of us would want to see is for you to be so wound up in pleasing us, your viewers, and not yourself and then quitting all together. Like I said, for the viewers that genuinely like you, your commitment or lack there of of content will not sway us. You'll always have the loyalty of followers who like you just for being you.
Many thanks for these videos, as a PhD student in UEBS, I feel very proud of what you are doing and many times your experience echoes so well with mine although we are in entirely different disciplines, keep up with the good work Simon :-)
This channel has been inspiring as I stumbled upon it searching on some PhD videos. A 1st year PhD econ student and it has been quite the adjustment, and I suppose I am still adjusting to it. Still, thanks for your vlogs, made me realize just how much I do need a life outside the studying. Cheers, and looking forward to the videos as they come. P.S. Don't obsess over the youtube stats too much.
"Fortran is the new one." Lol, I never thought I'd hear that one (it is about 60 yrs old now). Look into bullet journal btw, it's a low overhead way to keep track of everything. Thanks for the vids, keeps me distracted from my own work!
As a PhD student (Data Science) myself, I really enjoy your videos and stand in solidarity with your doctoral journey. Myself, I'm much more of an R and SAS guy, though I think it's only because I don't know Python (yet). All of the best and merry Christmas here from sunny South Africa!
I passed on Jake and Sam's RUclips channels to my kids. They like Minecraft too and look forward to watching their videos later today. Another good weekly vlog! I'm glad you are doing so well on your channel.
I've been binge watching your videos for the past 5 day or so and I'm totally inspired. thank you for all these videos and I hope you can keep it up and reply to comments haha
this is a very fun vlog to watch. it's longer, but it's so entertaining especially because I am also interested in more education eventually a PhD. and I love science and music!
Hey Simon, so I am going back to college at 24 and I feel stupid about it. Wish I would have done it sooner but it took a lot of life lessons to finally figure out what I wanted to do. Your videos have seriously made me look forward to going back to school and getting my degree. So thank you for that.
Hey Simon, i really enjoy your content since I'm getting my bachelor in energyengineering atm! It seems like I'm not alone in this, since you've gained almost 20K subs in December :) Keep on the good work!
I actually found your channel through the new RUclips algorithm. It kept showing up in the right side of other peoples Vlogs, as a recommended Video. I'm very happy that I checked it out
I really like your videos! Because we have finals coming up, I have been watching your content in order to motivate myself to be a student like yourself.
I just recently discovered your videos and as someone that almost majored (in the US) in the sciences but chose music instead, I'm finding them really interesting. Y'all certainly have some great choral music over there!
Great video! I feel your pain, I am a computing student, nearly everyday for me is programming. I use mainly Java, C# and JS (Used python as well a few years back). If I have a problem with my code and google doesn't have the answer, I find making a flow chart is helpful, shows you the functions and where stuff is going wrong. Case diagrams too can help - but they are far too time consuming.
man i can't believe that when you filmed this back in 2016 I was about the same age as some of your cousins... I was about 13 and a half at that point. and you would have been what, twice my age, simon? Now (2022) I'm a college student (second year) around when I discovered your channel in 2020 or 2021.
Hey Simon, it was great to meet you on that Thursday when i was at Exeter for my physics interview. It went well (I hope) and you were right I actually really enjoyed it! Hope you have a great Christmas man
Thanks for putting out these videos.... I'm in school getting my undergrad in nursing and trying to decide if i want to keep going and get my Ph.D. Wishing you success on your thesis!
SimonOxfPhys are you like 18? cause u look pretry young to be a PHD student! Youre smart! What are ypu trying to become? physics professor, scientist, astronaut?
Went to the bath spa with my girlfriend a while back, a great date :D Managed to go very off peak and was able to get the rooftop pool mostly to ourselves ;)
I love this, keep this up Simon. Watching these takes the pressure off from my exams
Curtis lol literally same situation here hahahaha
I'm in the first year of College, the pressure of university reaches this far down but these videos are relieving. Same thoughts exactly Curtis!
Nice to see other people in the same boat as me haha. Good luck with your exams!
njrom you too ! ^^
me: oh what a nice video to watch at my study break
me sees the length: oh no
me eventually: you know what a half an hour break with some tea is okay
ah i just want to survive this exam/committee week phew but i believe i can manage, good luck y'all guys whatever you are busy with, have a nice productive week!
I'm supposed to be correcting papers. Yet, here I am having a morning break with Simon and some coffee. What's half an hour? Right?
I subscribed yesterday Simon. I just started studying at uni myself, and you have allready inspired me to study harder/more effectively. Thank you!
You're welcome! And thank you for subscribing :)
Yo bro what are you studying?
The amount of engagement you have with your audience is insane considering the sheer amount of people commenting. You're super helpful and responsive and all the while managing a PhD. Just thought I'd thank you for being such an amazing youtuber :)
Aw thank you
I thought I'd never hear of fortran again. The only code I have ever learned....
Simon deserves his own show on tv! His content is always on point 🔥👌🏽💯
You know you're a physics nerd when you pause on his notes...
Been hooked on these vlogs recently
Your ' How to study effectively' video was how i accidentally discovered your channel and since then I have watched almost all of your videos, your enthusiasm is contagious, and your vlogs and videos have helped me in strange ways...your doing great work!!!

RUclips algorithms sure have changed, I keep seeing new channels in my feed and yours is one of them.
AWWWWWWWWW NO SWIM SHORTS?! PLZ SIMON
Next time I'll include some just for you Brian ;)
Ok that's gay
My current dichotomy is watching your educational vlogs relentlessly to completely procrastinate through my own degree. Good job.
I literally look forward to these videos all week. In the meantime I end up re-watching the previous week!
Honestly think this is my favourite channel at the moment. Given me both motivation to kick on and revise.
Free food in academic events is my favorite part, too!! Your Wednesday deep reflexion was meaningful. The gift exchange was hilarious! And your family time was so cute.

dont know why, but when i watch this , It gives me motivation to study for my exams haha
"I AM exhausted basically all the time" yep, that's a pretty good description of me too, in this end of semester ^^
Hey Simon, honestly no idea where your videos came from just popped up in my recommended a week ago. Whatever the changes youtube made is working with your Chanel, great content man keep it up if you can haha!
So glad this video came after my final cuz God knows i would have been watching this instead of studying.

I'm a fellow physics student making videos about my experience - would appreciate any feedback :)
If only you knew that you are going to be a successful youtuber yourself with 500K subscribers :)
You just surpassed Simon

You are getting me through my final year here at Cardiff. Dabbling with MATLAB now so it's nice to hear someone else is keen!

As a guy subscribed mostly to sports and fitness channels, gotta give it to that youtube algorithm. They have done well by bringing me here
Glad to have you on board!

Enjoy the few weeks off and happy Christmas. Was delighted to see the 'aurora borealis' and that you enjoyed some steamed hams by video's end :)
I will reply to your email shortly, I haven't forgotten!
Take your time dude, its a busy time of year. All in good time
I can't stop watching these vlogs and I don't know why
These videos are great! Keep up the good work Simon, and keep going with the yogscast-references :D
I like how even in the midst of working on a Phd, there seems to still be plenty of time for genuine fun.
The best vlog. Feels like I'm walking around with you! Great editing too.
Awesome video Simon! Love the vlogs and hope we see more of the chapel choir.
I subscribed like yesterday and I'm probably going to be watching your videos for as long as you make them, so no pressure...just height.
this is a very fun vlog to watch. it's longer, but it's so entertaining especially because I am also interested in more education eventually a PhD. and I love science and music!
I love these so much, and the little bit about motivation was even more motivational

I really like your videos! Because we have finals coming up, I have been watching your content in order to motivate myself to be a student like yourself.

Well we did write most of it ;)
I don't care about science at all, I just like hearing this guy talk. He's interesting and knows how to entertain.
Your videos are amazing. Thank you for taking the time to make them and share it with us
Awesome vlog! Can't wait for more content :)

If you get the chance of doing an advent calendar, you really should, their days are numbered!
Went to the bath spa with my girlfriend a while back, a great date :D Managed to go very off peak and was able to get the rooftop pool mostly to ourselves ;)
Amazing vlog videos (: currently 3rd year undergrad in physics and astronomy. PhD looks very fun and challenging!
Remount I'm going for undergrad in physics and astronomy too!
wooh space physics buddies
I physics masters student and I definitely agree about how much time is taken up by admin.
please explain abit more of the physics used in your phd on the channel please. Loving it so far.
I just found your channel and love that this exists. Science is cool again!
You're a Yogscast fan too? Whoa! ... I'm too busy to watch Jingle Jams sadly, but if you find the time, then I should be able to as well :3.
Great vlog mate. I think Jake is reasonably happy with his performance! :-)
