- We did it. We got a thesis written. Now it's time to hand it in! There are just a few teething problems along the way...
To see where and how my mic got wrecked: • WRESTLING ON FIRE?? | ...
Thank you so much to everyone for being a never-ending source of motivation and encouragement for me. I really mean what I say at the end - your support helped me get through the tough and tiring times of the thesis. So this one is dedicated to you all in the audience. Apologies to those of you that liked the beard though :P Particular thanks must also go to Pixelgirl and to Imogen for their help with this vlog. I love you both, in entirely different ways.
Next time will be a similar vlog about my time in New York with RUclips... and snow!

to do calculate!!!!!!
To make it count ... :)
lol nice one.
Shame about the mic but I still really like this vlogging style! It's the kind that I have used since I find it easier than talking to the camera on the go
I smiled through the entire vlog. Good job on your thesis.
Simon, I thought your style of vlogging in this video was your best style yet. It is similar to a documentary where clips are shown amidst commentary, but you accomplished it in such an interesting and fun way. I'm almost glad your microphone died because it meant that you had to adopt a new style, a style that was fresh and deserving of your final week as a PhD student. Very well done.
Hey, this narrated vlog was awesome for a change of pace! You should do one of these every once in awhile! Congrats!
I think I may have to, based on the comments!
For those wondering, it'll be easy to tell when/whether he's been granted a PhD because the video notification won't be 'Simon Clark uploaded a new video' but instead will be 'Dr. Clark uploaded a new video'.
+seviper283 you know it 😎
It's bad to go weeks without offloading and editing footage? I feel attacked.
**triggered**
Pretty ballsy move to show attempted murder in a youtube video. This will get demonetized for sure! That puny razor had no chance against me!
Simon's Beard underrated comment
Simon's Beard c
Damn, congratulations Simon! Watching you back when i was doing my GCSEs and now being a first year undergrad student, its amazing seeing your accomplishments from being an Oxford undergrad to handing in your PhD thesis! :D
I know you did not mean for the Vlog to be like this, but i really liked this style! it almost like a story time also seems less intrusive that you can live your life without talking to the camera just filming. Its different to other Vlogs... I like it!
It seems that a lot of people agree with you - I may have to do this again!
It’s nice to see a vlog that doesn’t fit in with the ‘normal RUclips style’ this was like a breath of fresh air and it was really enjoyable
So happy for you Simon! Thanks for taking us on this journey with you :) Loved how you edited this vlog with the footage you had!
If the only rule of a thesis beard is that you don't shave before you hand in, why did you shave one day before? Were you trying to catch me off guard?
I knew you were too powerful to tackle head-on!
Bamboozled again!
LMAO
Simon is so interesting and nice bloke. I've been watching him for many years!
I agree. He has quickly become a role model for me. He works towards his goals, he is good with people, and above all: he's got a really positive attitude.
Same here bro.
Coke Zero is amazing.
“To Do Calculate”. Laughed out loud! I’m defending my thesis in several months, congrats!
Congratulations, well done!!! :D As someone who's just started their PhD I've found this series very reassuring, and want to thank you for taking us on the journey with you. Wishing you all the best for your next adventure :)
so impressive that your videos are educational AND fascinating AND funny
I quite like this format
Simon/Pixelgirl are so lovely together. Congrats dude on handing in!! You'll definitely do well for your vivo!
How exciting! Congratulations ☆
Bloody well done. Well chuffed for you, it's finally (more or less) done! Congratulations ☺️
I feel so indescribably proud😭 I’ve been watching you since I was eleven years old (16 now) when I first decided I wanted to go into science. Now I have dreams of getting a phd in physics, and your videos continue to inspire me as a budding astrophysicist
Hannah Brown,
Best of luck on your journey in science!
I thought the relief of GCSE results day was bad. Boy. It gets worse, doesn't it?
This is such a cute comment :')
Haha!!😂
It felt about the same on GCSE results and A level results and degree final exams and PhD hand in to be honest! The stakes get raised the older you get, but they feel about the same
Been watching this channel for about five years now. Damn, feels like the end of an era. Congratulations!
Doctor Whoooooo? Well not you - not YET. Congratulations Simon!
From someone who has been there from the beginning, and didn't even fade when choral music took up about 90% of your vlogs - honestly learnt a lot from those ones! Keep rock and rolling. You did it :)
Thank you for staying with me for so long! :)
Ever since I discovered your channel last year, your videos propelled and motivated me through my last year of high school and my first year (so far) of my astrophysics undergrad! Sometimes when I don't feel like studying, I think of you working away on your thesis, and that often gets me right going again. So, congratulations, you truly deserve this, thank you for all you've done so far, and I can't wait to see what you come up with in the future!
congratulations simon, it really has been a pleasure to share this journey with you
Simon, congratulations on all the hard work that you have put into this endeavor that has finally ended with you submitting your thesis. You have put blood sweat and tears into this and you have come out on top. These vlogs and the tellings of your work throughout the years has been amazing and has also helped to energize me and I'm sure of countless others students, to continue or to begin the path you have just completed. You're a tremendous beacon of inspiration to anyone who wants to complete the journey. I know that I am only in my second year as an undergrad for Astrophysics, but now I feel as if this dream of submitting a thesis, to hopefully become a doctor, is truly achievable. Thanks to your documenting of your experiences it has given a new light on what it means to be a Ph.D. student. Thank you again for all of your hard work, cheers Zach.
P.s. This form of vlog worked well, you should try it out again sometime!
How completely wonderful to see the moment of hand in after all those agonising code-related twists and turns of the journey! I know the viva is still to come but what a very great victory the handing in was after everything you had had to wrestle with - huge congratulations, Simon :) And I loved the unconventional approach resulting from the sound issues - it was the perfect solution!
Congrats Simon 🎉
I know it is too early to congratulate you, but well done. You deserve your PhD, we have seen you work so hard, struggle, overcome your doubts and went crazy till the end. You will nail the viva
First of all, congratulations!
Must have been such an amazing, uplifting feeling!
Second of all, absolutely enjoyed the video! The editing has been on point as well as the new perspective on storytelling.
Captivating - those 22 minutes flew by like a Christmas break.
I think Patreon supporters should be invited to the viva 😂
Forget the mic problems, this was a really really nice vlog
Congratulations on your incredible journey, you have inspired, motivated and survived
Thank you so much for sharing your journey
Is it weird how proud I am of you? I have been watching your PHD series for over a year now and it really helped me through graduating high school and now my first semester of University
Been watching since your "How to study effectively" video, I watched it so many times because it helped me keep motivated through university. I hope you can fulfill your dreams and keep inspiring this growing community. Congratulations, quasi-Dr. Clark!
The relief on your face, and the jubilation in your eyes is palpable. You've earned it. Congratulations!!!
CONGRATS SIMON! You've motivated me to do well in my GCSE Olevels and now I'm taking my A Levels this year!!!
Congrats Simon well deserved! It is a credit to all your work through the past few year. Good luck with your Viva and cant wait to see your next adventure with RUclips!!!!
Massive congratulations, Simon! We're all proud of you. And thank you for sharing your journey with us! :)
Congratulations! This vlog style was actually perfect since it's obviously flashback. Condolences about the microphone.
Congratulations! You really deserved this! You have been an inspiration for me for quite a long time now, I'm so happy to see you've finally handed in.
Congratulations! I absolutely loved this vlog. Not just because it involves you finally handing in your thesis, but also because of the format. Great way to solve the audio issue and sort of fitting since it's the culmination of the series. I can't wait to see how this channel evolves now that you're a full-time video maker. Thank you for letting us follow along on your PhD journey.
Well done mate, saw you a few times back when you were in Oxford and I was doing A-levels at that time, now I'm in uni, well into my course. Your journey has been inspiring to say the least and even though I am studying for exams right now, I am happy right now...until it gets closer to exams and cannot procrastinate as much.
very proud of you Mr Clark! I also really enjoyed the format of the vlog
Congratulations! It feels like I'm catching the torch since you submitted the day before I started my PhD :-)
Good luck with your studies! It's a lot of work and stressful but worth it in the end. Just remember - it's the journey that counts, not the destination!
Hey, I don't comment much but I've been watching since around the start of your PhD vlogs. Congratulations, I can't imagine how happy you must be!
Thank you! :)
I hadn't realised how emotionally invested I was in this journey until your hunch was right and I practically punched the air! Thank you so much for sharing this experience with us :)
I think you definitely made the 'vlog' work, I didn't mind the mix & match style at all!
Congrats on finishing!
Congratulations!!! I can't describe how much more exiting this vlog makes my previously shitty day!
We did it!
We did it!
We did it!
Yay!
Lo hicimos!
Yay!
Whoo!
Hurray!
...We did it!
...Whoo!
Congratulations on getting it done!! I saved this video for when I had finished my PhD, and I am submitting tomorrow. Thank you for this vlog series; it motivated me a lot during my endless days and nights in front of my laptop, surrounded by piles of books. I'm sure all PhD students are spared many years in purgatory for the suffering they endure. Now to freedom!
So what happened?
You did a great job bouncing back from technical problems to your usual vlog style. I actually really enjoyed this version just as much as your other style! Congrats on handing in your thesis, and I can't wait to see what you do next! :)
Congratulations Simon! One of the happiest videos Ive ever seen
Congratulations!! I'm so happy for you. You deserved it. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences. These videos gives me motivation for my future (however scares me either) but I still want to do a Phd in physics too.
Thanks again. :)
Congratulations!!!! I’m a high school senior right now and I plan to major in astrophysics and attempt to go for a PhD myself. Watching your videos has been really inspiring and I hope that one day I’ll get to have the joy of handing in a finished thesis.
5lovestarr your dreams are unattainable. Life is hopeless. Give up
@@elilangley5922 I’m three years into community college for physics now and am currently putting everything together to transfer to a university as a Physics/Astronomy double major for the fall of 2022. It’s slow going and I definitely did go through a period of feeling like I should give up last semester, but I’m glad I didn’t and while my career goals have changed, I’m still eager to attempt to get a PhD one day. I like to rewatch Simon’s vlogs for educational motivation because sometimes we all need a little boost. I’m sure you didn’t mean to try to put down my goals with your comment and if you did, then I’m sorry you felt I couldn’t attain them. I hope whatever goals you’ve had these past three years are being reached and if you’re struggling too then don’t worry! I’m sure with hard work we can all get to where we want to be just like Simon did 😁
Congrats Simon. I've been watching since 2015. You are a true inspiration. Motivated me to go to grad school this year or next year. Your consistency and balance is my goal
Are you going to upload the thesis?
Would love to see it!
Hi Simon, bingewatching your youtubechannel like a netflixserie atm. Really liking your content. So, here my thanksletter for you. Thanks, for being here my man!
Congratulations Simon. Much deserved. Thank you for sharing your experiences with us.
Well done! It’s sad to see it all come to and end, but I’m happy at the same time mainly due to the fact I can tell you’re exhausted by it all. Best of luck in the future Simon, you will exceed at being a scientific communicator much like you have at academics! Thank you for being a stable of inspiration, hard work, dedication and commitment in my life for the past two years
Aww man, Simon. Congratulations! I remember you from back when you were given tips on how to get into oxfords, or a university in general and it helped me big time. I'm happy to see that all your hard work has payed off. Well done!
So happy for you Simon! Watching you go through your tough times at Oxford and now seeing you end up here has been amazing.
Thank you for coming on the journey with me!
Simon Clark can't wait to see what you get up to in the future!
Hey Simon just wanted to say thanks. You inspired me to take a physics A-Level and I fucking love it. Thank you so much. All the best in the future!
I'm so happy for you! Congratulations for turning in your thesis. I have watched your content for over a year now and damn this vlog made me emotional! Last summer I decided to finally embark on my own academic journey. I am now on my second quarter of an undergraduate degree at the ripe ole age of 30. It is the best decision I have ever made in my life and I honestly think your vlogs planted the seed -- at least in part -- you show the human side of higher education, which made me feel less intimated to pursue my own academic goals. Thank you for making unique content and sharing your life and knowledge in a way that inspires engaged minds, fun, support, and honesty. Here's to becoming a Dr soon!
Wahey! That's so amazing! Congratulations for taking the plunge, and I'm glad I was able to at least in part encourage you to do so!
I had the biggest smile on my face watching this video, thanks Simon for all the vlogs and congratulations!
I've just submitted my thesis too. Thank you Simon. You somehow motivates me going through hard times for the past one year. At least I know I'm not the only one facing frustration and emotional pain.
Wahey, congratulations!
Congrats on finishing, what an achievement, and good luck with the viva! I watching this very early this morning before uni started, and seeing how passionate you are about your field made me motivated to work harder on my degree, so thank you!
Congratulations. You are not only inspirational but a wonderful presenter. I have three masters, and as an old boy in his fifties whose eldest child is currently doing a physics BA, you have, as well as others, helped motivate me to apply to do a Phd. Many, many thanks.
This is such a lovely comment, thank you! I hope you have the greatest success with your PhD
I finally reached your "handing in my PhD thesis" video, saw all your previous "life as a PhD student' video's and was so excited to see this one. Well deserved:-)
Loved this, loved the style as well (even though it literally had to be done like this), it felt like you were talking to us more directly? Not that you don’t in the usual vlogs but with such a big thing it was nice! And congrats on finally handing in, good luck on the viva
I has been watching you since you started your PhD and I think a little before too... such and amazing channel and is incredible that we don't know each other but seems I know you and you know me and your viewers because we were here all along.
I really like this style of vlog for a change, it was really nice- even if it was a happy accident!
Also I can't believe you've finally done it, I remember finding your Oxford vlogs years ago and it feels like the end of an era... Quite strange!
Congratulations!!! You made me feel like wow, I want to do a thesis too!
May God help you!
Congratulations!
Great edit too btw!
Congratulations Simon! This is so amazing. You are absolutely inspiring yet still so down to earth and humble!!
Congratulations! Strongs for the viva still to come. Referring people to your channel all the time and starting my phd as soon as UCT get the papers in order. Enjoy the new adventures ☺👌
Exciting! I am so looking forward for that moment of delivery. Now only one more big boss to defeat and it will be Doctor SImon. Congratulations !
Just congrats, massive respect for your accomplishment!
Enjoyed your journey thus far Simon! Congratulations on submission. 💥 And yes you have motivated me so thank you too! You have been an amazing you tuber and student. 🍾
Simon, over the past year, it's been a genuine pleasure to watch your progress. As a soon-to-be Ph.D. student myself in the fall, your content has really made me excited for what the future holds.
Stay awesome!
This was the best vlog I have ever watched. I watched the entire thing with a smile on my face! I will admit that I haven't seen your videos in a few months (like you say, laser focused on other things and being human falls by the wayside!) but I've watched you since undergrad and I can't quite believe that you're so close to being a doctor now. You're an academic badass and I'm proud of you (even if I don't know you in person!)
Simon, I’m what you would call a “silent subscriber”. Although I don’t comment on many videos, I do watch them all and am inspired and motivated after watching each one. I have followed you since your Oxford days and I am so proud of how far you’ve come and very excited for the things to come! Congratulations on submitting your PhD and I look forward to the future of this channel! Keep up the great work Simon.
Thank you for breaking your silence to write this comment - and thank you for following my work for so long!
Congratulations Simon!! That's an amazing achievement! I applied for Uni this year and got into my chosen course that hopefully will turn into the madness of a PhD at some point in the future. I'm doing Medical Science and Japanese and am so excited.
I have to say that watching your vlogs over the past year or more really inspired me to want to continue learning and was part of the reason Uni has been stuck in my head for the last year so thank you for rekindling that curiosity for learning that hadn't been there for me in a while. I am super thrilled to see what kind of videos you make now you've finished your PhD. Congrats again! :D
Medical science AND Japanese?? Showoff :p
I'm glad I've been able to rekindle your fire for studying, and thank you!
Man, it's to bad that I had discovered your vlog before now, Simon. This stuff is motivating, to say the least. Truly inspiring!
Congrats! (Even though I saw it on other social medias months ago). A different vlog style but just as good! I've been watching for over a year and there's no chance in stopping now.
Yaaaaay :)
CONGRATULATIONS!!! Nothing beats the feeling of submitting completed research work gods =))))) I hope you get to do all the things you want to do after your PhD, and I would also just like to thank you for being a continuous source of inspiration to grad students like me who are still in the process of completing our degrees, and even non-grad students :3 Rest assured I'm gonna keep rewatching your research journey and vlogs when I feel like I need some *intellectual company* while doing my own thesis =)) Congrats again! :D
Freaking awesome, congratulations! Been watching since undergraduate and I won't be stopping now! Hope to do a PhD some day myself, if it ends up going in anyway like yours or if I have even an ounce of your attitude, that'll be me happy. Well done again!
Been following for years man... Shoutout to you for finally doing it! You definitely inspired me. Watching your journey has inspired me to work harder on my journey in science undergrad.
It has been great to follow your journey Simon! Cheers from a fellow Earth Sciences PhD (luckily also finished now :) A lot of respect for your multitasking and creativity!)
It’s videos like this that make me reminisce over the journey you have been on. I remember when I first started watching your videos, about 4 or 5 years ago. It’s just so weird. I don’t know what I’m on about but I’m getting a weird emotion and I don’t know what it is :p
When are you going to get ur next Ph.D.?
Gears Exposed one isn't enough?
You can get multiple??
Tntpker yes
Sheeettt
Yes, you can, but it's kind of pointless. You might as well just get going on your own research. There's really not much of a reason to get a second PhD unless, for some reason, you wanted to get one in a completely unrelated field (I'm talking like, he has a PhD in the sciences, if he wanted to teach in the humanities or something, it maybe would make sense to go back for another PhD. Otherwise, there's really no reason for another PhD.)
Congrats, Simon! Hopefully I'll be in your position in the next 12 months, too!
Congrats! The 'new' format is surprisingly engaging, I look forward to the next vlog
I'm a physics student, every time I think of giving up I watch ur PhD vlogs and it motivates me to keep going. thank you simon Clark.
Whoo!! And my comment about pixelgirl still stands ;) Proud of you bro ❤️
I can't completely express how much I appreciate these vlogs and how you're shared you're journey to this point. I'm currently studying Physics and regularly lose motivation and hope and putting in the time to watch a video of yours genuinely makes my mind better. Congratulations on the hand in and Thank you always.
Thank you for beeing this lovely storyteller from a scientific angle. Everytime you upload I know i’m going to be entertained for the next half an hour
Congratulations, Simon! I've loved watching your PhD videos for about a year and half now, I wish you the best of luck!
This is a happy/sad video. I have been watching since week 1, you motivated through my own college work as i'm doing my thesis this year and i'm sad to see it's all over. I wish you good luck in your future endeavors.
