  • I filmed another week in my life! This week I write a key part of my thesis, sing in several services and a performance of Handel's Messiah, actually succeed in some coding, edit some videos, stand up to a lunkhead, and take a mysterious flight to Belfast...
You guys really seemed to like the last vlog so I thought I would do another like it - if you have any suggestions of what you'd like to see, do comment! And if you liked what you saw then please do give it a like and maybe subscribe to the channel :)

Aw man, I started my PhD with such a strong "no working evenings or weekends" attitude. And then, ever so gradually, I started going home a bit later, and very occasionally I'd come in on a Sunday to get a few bits done.
Then, five days before I was due to submit, I found a mistake.
I was at that stage where pretty much everything was up in my head and I was able to convince myself within just a couple of minutes that everything would be fine - all I basically had to do was go through half a chapter and remove some (but not all) of the dots... Of course, that sounds much easier than it actually was...
I eventually finished at 2am or so. I'd missed the last bus, so I had to walk home in the rain (it was about 45 minutes walk) - and because it was August I hadn't thought to bring a coat or an umbrella, so I got pretty damn wet...

Don't ever stop doing these vlogs. They keep me going everyday. I am in the exact same boat.I'm 23 I work 50 hours a week at my job, I am in school for computer information systems security I am also currently working on an algorithm to run a drone autonomously with my friends and I have two children. Exhaustion just becomes a close friend that you can't escape.

The phrase, "Last night we went to a house party after the Messiah," literally had me in stitches. You had me laughing all throughout. Also, your voice during your solo, sounded rich and buttery; not parched. I look forward to future vlogs! Keep up the good work toward PhD, singing, and RUclips! I am new to your channel but I am definitely subscribed! Best wishes to you and yours, from the Pacific Northwest!

by the way, I go to the cinema on my own sometimes, too...but it annoys me how it is received as something not normal that only lonely people do... I actually do it because I can't be bothered to ask one of my friends, or no one is free and I just really want to see the movie..why is it normal to watch one alone when you're at home, but as soon as the screen is big, it's weird? I just think it's crazy that people are so uncomfortable with the idea of someone enjoying being in their own company..

It's been a long while since I have posted. You have a lot going on! Don't worry about the coding. It will all work itself out, just give it time. Sometimes getting up and walking away from the project for a bit helps brings problems into perspective. Your music sounds great, as always. Handel seems to be a prerequisite for the Christmas holidays. Thankfully, Christmas break is just around the corner so all we student/teachers can take a much needed break from the insanity that is education.

Its nice to see a PhD from another field, I'm final year PhD in Medical Sci (I study how inflammation causes type 2 diabetes and how we can intervene and treat it) and we get the same kind of problems. I solved one problem with an experiment to be slammed with another. You're right though, it's nice to be able to start writing parts of your thesis, finally feels like progress has been made!
Also the staying late thing, totes normal. I do around 8am to 9pm at the moment, just too much to do in the lab, plus thesis writing, plus paper writing as well. The last year is the worst but we're almost there stay strong!

To answer your question about having too little work early in the phd and too much work later; I am a second year phd student doing astrophysics and feel slightly different. Hi Simon, your vlog really inspired me to think about PhD, though I'm a first year undergrad, I can't wait to see more of your videos.

As an undergraduate who is considering postgrad/PhD study, I love all the content that you make about your PhD. I'm also an Anglican-Choral-Music-phile, so it's great to watch that content too! Coll Reg

I really love these vids! I am planning on heading back for an Economics PhD and the fact you're using recursive methods in your code makes me think this is probably what my life will be like in 5 years. Definitely seems like fun, but incredibly hard work!
    I can't wait!

I always have too much to do (but I do remember the early days of free time at work). Also I am so jealous that you can 'leave things to run' and results magically appear

I'm always working on my PhD in the evenings and weekends as I do it in addition to my normal job, which is quite common in many countries for PhDs in medicine :)

It would be really nice if you can record a lil bit of the session with your supervisor. Just to kind of get an idea how the supervision works in PhD. I know it may be difficult depending on your relationship with your supervisor but if its possible please consider it!

I'm a third year PhD student (Criminology). I'm guilty of not being able to separate work and non-work spaces, so I leave work on time only to then work at home, or even in bed (!) when it's hectic. I applaud your ability to separate your responsibilities - even if you do leave work late, you then separate that from RUclips work and home life.
