I, for one, think the female scientist card game was a superb idea - spreading the word and work of some incredibly important people, while simultaneously fengshui-ing the living room?! HECK yeah my dude.
Any chance you could start selling the massive A2 posters of female scientists? I feel like a lot of us could crowdfund it through kickstarter or something
I really think it is admirable what you achieved with the cards. I'm a long time viewer and I remember when you made them, I thought it was a great idea. To hear (and now see in the comments) that some didn't like the deck - though for completely different reasons - I simply don't understand. The cards are great!! Wish I had them myself tbh.
As a girl I can say the cards are great. Strange as it may sound, I'd like to appear on one of them as a great computer scientist who trained computers to help people.
Before watching this video, the only female scientist that I know is Marie Curie (embarrassingly). It's nice to see you show an awareness of them, especially to the ill-informed audience like myself. The STEM field is quite a sausage fest, but it seems to get better with time.
I'm glad, really really that you upload more videos a week!!! Your videos inspire me a lot to study and i get motivated after i watch one! Thank you so much! Keep up the good work you are doing!
I love the idea of the cards!! And the frame! Good job simon!! I feel so lazy compared to you! I barely do anything and sleep all the time and feel constantly tired! shame on me
I'm glad I found your channel, it's really helped with motivation going into my masters in mechanical engineering. I aspire to be at least somewhat like you someday. I'm so proud we happen to have at least recently had the same mad max desktop wallpapers on our computers
I personally really liked the mini episodes. It meant I could just watch the video in one go and not have to stop and start while doing other things. Also, as a female maths student, don't listen to anyone who says anything bad about the project. It's a fabulous idea and desperately needed in science sadly.
i'd love to watch a video where you explain how you shoot and edit videos, Simon ! and I love the new vlog format! good luck with the last months of your PhD!!
great video, your vlogs always inspire me to do work but I love that your honest in your videos still. I just get the impression that you geniuely want to help people and that's so refreshing :D
Loving the new format. If your vlogs were cocaine... You basically rationed out my weekly supply of coke into 3 lovely parts so I don't snort it all in one sitting.
I just looked at your female scientists things. I am so amazed Linda Buck is on there. I work on olfaction too, just in insects not mammals, and have read her research. Gives me hope that I might find success... hahaha
You only have to breathe the phrase 'women in STEM' and the trolls arrive. Love the card game, Simon. Roll on the second addition. And I like the new format, but I could potentially end up watching fewer videos this way as I missed part two quite easily. Will catch up later but first, matlab!
I know that this is nitpicky but the image used for Hypatia is from a Pompeian fresco which was buried 300 years before Hypatia was born. The fresco is also often associated with Sappho, an ancient Greek poet.
Hey i really appreciate the work you've done on you're channel, as a first year war and security studies student at hull university its great to hear tips and tricks and someone else perspective of uni life as nobody really talks about it. I was wondering if there was any exam tips and tricks we could use when it comes to exam season? Thanks again for the work you do!
Hey Simon! Thanks for uploading these weekly vlogs, I found them very inspiring! It seems to me that you have great self discipline and do not procrastinate at all. Could you please do a video explaining some techniques you use to keep focused and concentrated, and some advice to get rid of procrastination? Thank you and keep vlogging!
Definitely make a video, or a miniseries, about the practical side of youtube! I would watch the hell out of that (and maybe even get off my arse and make some videos). Suggested topic: what are the lessons you learned from your first fifty videos? Also what is the Pixel Girl theme tune (1:04-1:08)? Is it copyright free? Could I nick it and use it as my channel theme tune if I ever get my channel up and running?
Hey, that might be a good idea for a youtuber tag/questionnaire/challenge thing if it's not already been done: What I Learned From Making My First Fifty Videos (That Were Terrible).
I'm planning on starting a proper RUclips channel mainly as a video diary, I'd be really interested in seeing the technical side of RUclips as I am a relative novice at this. Loving the work Simon, keep putting Exeter Uni on the map! #BleedGreen :)
I was just thinking it would be super cool if you did videos after some time about different types of scientists/engineers (or any other STEM career) and gave an overview of them. I think it would be very helpful for people trying to decide what they want to do for a living. Just a thought! Also I really love this channel and find so much joy in your videos! Thanks Simon. -Zoey
the new video format is nice. :) I'd be interested in hearing a little more on your hall of fame pertaining coding mistakes. I think it would be a nice little laugh. thanks for all you do Simon, love your vids
I'd like to see the Code Grumbles bits. Makes me feel less shit about my own silly errors when others do it too. And yeah the youtube side of stuff - editing etc would be great too. I liked the vlogs. I like both styles, too, short and longform is good.
Now that you mention it - suggestion! Make a video on student loans* in the UK! Or at least expand a bit on it: what's your situation as a PhD student, if you've ever had any issues getting by, etc. I'm from Sweden and have been studying in Spain for the past 4 months (not at a university however). I'd be interested to know what the situation is like in the U and I'm sure other foreign viewers would be too! *student economy in general
I'm new to your channel, my cousin recommended you! (He's studying genetics, says he gets inspired by your vlogs). Awesome stuff. Would love to see the technical stuff, too. Keep on!
Hey Simon, I love your videos. It'd be really cool if you could do a more practical video about your RUclips workflow and editing process. Keep up the good work.
Simon!! I start my first calculus-based physics course this fall & I was wondering which types of maths and concepts I should be familiar/competent in before jumping in. Planning to study physics at uni & right now I'm studying kinematics-vectors-2D projectiles. Thanks!
Matthew Zárate Hi, I'm a TA for a class that sounds similar to the one you are describing. I would recommend being very proficient in derivatives, namely the relationships between position/velocity/acceleration, and knowing how to solve systems of equations with two unknowns. (IE. Solving for x and y from 2x+7y=3 and 76x+4y=23.) This is assuming that you've taken calculus 1.
I'm hopefully going to be a female scientist one day and I love the fact that you made the picture. You're so inspirational thank you so much for your videos
I haven't seen the female scientist thing but that is such a cool idea! As a female who will hopefully be a scientist one day, very inspiring :) Also, im guessing I am roughly a foot shorter than you .. and I am only a few kg lighter. Shit.
So I'm not Simon, but I do know that in the UK (and specifically in the sciences) rather than applying to do a general PhD and then choosing your topic, you apply to do a specific topic that will usually be offered by a university with an expert in the field to supervise you, so Simon would have applied to Exeter specifically to do his project. Quite often (again specifically in the sciences) there's funding attached to the project as well.
Hey Simon, I'm off to Manchester to study Astrophysics in September (H e l p!) You've probably answered this before, but do you have any tips for managing workload at uni? I really like the new style of vlogs, they're much more accessible as I like to watch all the videol in one go but don't have to set aside 45 minutes or so to do so Best wishes, Jack
Hey Simon, I'm not surprised by the fact that you created a card game. Nor by the fact that you shared my video (execute.nobledeed();). What startled me is that you lost 3kgs in 2 weeks! Holy Clark! And thanks again for sharing, looking forward to the video on editing tutorial. :)
I would love to hear more about the hall of fame ;p it'd make me feel so much better about all the coding mistakes I've made over the years! Also, why are people so sensitive about you talking about female scientists? I think it's funny that a few people are so upset or, dare I say it, "triggered", especially when they seem like the type of people who say feminists are overly sensitive. seems like they're projecting, honestly. People will be people, I suppose. On another note, I love this format for the vlog now. I've been feeling very spoiled because of how often videos are coming out now!
Hey Simon, I was just wondering what you think is the reason behind the lack of women in STEM? Just curious as a female final year physicist, and from my experience, I think it's the attitude some of our male counterparts have towards us. Loving the vids!
Can you do also some card with male? I like the idea but maybe have 1/3 cards of male. Could work also better for child... So if there are a male and a girl togheter ...also the boy could fell involve
PIXEL GIRL AND PHYSICS BOY! NOT THE HEROES EXETER WANTS BUT THE HEROES THEY NEED!
I, for one, think the female scientist card game was a superb idea - spreading the word and work of some incredibly important people, while simultaneously fengshui-ing the living room?! HECK yeah my dude.
Dan's here!
Hahahahahahahaha thanks for promoting my code
Any chance you could start selling the massive A2 posters of female scientists? I feel like a lot of us could crowdfund it through kickstarter or something
Fawaz Shah if there's enough demand then we could certainly try!
Can you also make male scientist top trump cards, to keep the meninists happy xD
facepalm
Ya I want the female deck poster, maybe not single cards, but like a poster of them place on one poster
I wasn't sure at first, but I really like the new vlog style. It feels somehow more personal and relaxed. Keep up the great work, Simon.
Very excited for what's to come on your channel Simon! Definitely keep up the mini-sodes + info getting into RUclips-ing.
Your David Attenborough shirt is amazing :') I'm becoming more jealous of your collection.
As a girl I can say the cards are great. Strange as it may sound, I'd like to appear on one of them as a great computer scientist who trained computers to help people.
Hope you are working on it. Machine Learning is a very exciting field
Indeed! It is very exciting!
+Jeewantha Bandara I have tomorrow my finals so trust me, I'm working on getting into great ML university all day long :D
These are my future thoughts as well! It seems really exciting
How does that sound strange?
Before watching this video, the only female scientist that I know is Marie Curie (embarrassingly). It's nice to see you show an awareness of them, especially to the ill-informed audience like myself. The STEM field is quite a sausage fest, but it seems to get better with time.
i only knew her too
I am constantly amazed by u honestly - such work ethic !!
I was using Sony Vegas for my videos and recently switched to Premiere. Both are great editing systems, but Premiere is certainly more advanced.
The cards look sooo good in that frame. Like all the goals, aesthetics and all of that. I need them in my life. 😍
Very much a fan of the new vlog format! Keep up the good work!
the card deck idea is brilliant! it makes me like you even more. and i love that you printed and framed it! keep on going!
The card idea was fantastic.
I'm glad, really really that you upload more videos a week!!! Your videos inspire me a lot to study and i get motivated after i watch one! Thank you so much! Keep up the good work you are doing!
I heart ❤️ Grace Hopper. I did a paper on her. Researching her was a pure joy
Your edits are hilarious... You've come a long way!
Honestly I dont understand Anything about the science talk but I really enjoy your vlogs!
So great to see those female scientist cards again! Reminds me of the time lapse you made of the decks being assembled. That was so cool to watch! :)
I love the idea of the cards!! And the frame! Good job simon!! I feel so lazy compared to you! I barely do anything and sleep all the time and feel constantly tired! shame on me
I'm loving this 2 vlogs in 1 week thing!!
*3 vlogs! Check the playlist :)
yes simon it would be great to show us how to edit
I loved this vídeo. The idea on the greatest women in history was amazing. Congrats Simon. Cheers from Brazil.
Great vlog this week!
I'm glad I found your channel, it's really helped with motivation going into my masters in mechanical engineering. I aspire to be at least somewhat like you someday. I'm so proud we happen to have at least recently had the same mad max desktop wallpapers on our computers
love the new format 👍Ur doing great keep up the good work
You trying to avoid the comment war was amazing :') i love the card game, lovely idea xx
I personally really liked the mini episodes. It meant I could just watch the video in one go and not have to stop and start while doing other things. Also, as a female maths student, don't listen to anyone who says anything bad about the project. It's a fabulous idea and desperately needed in science sadly.
I'd love to see a dedicated video about the 'practical' side of making videos, like camera gear and editing etc!
i'd love to watch a video where you explain how you shoot and edit videos, Simon ! and I love the new vlog format! good luck with the last months of your PhD!!
Thanks! I think I'll need it...
You've got this !!! And your code seems to be working ?! I'm sure you'll be able to soon see the end of the tunnel ;-)
great video, your vlogs always inspire me to do work but I love that your honest in your videos still. I just get the impression that you geniuely want to help people and that's so refreshing :D
Yeah, editing and filming talks are great. Cheers mate
The minisodes are a great idea!
And liking the technical/practical stuff about the channel
good video, excited for the future. would love to see more editing detail.... 👍
Loving the new format. If your vlogs were cocaine... You basically rationed out my weekly supply of coke into 3 lovely parts so I don't snort it all in one sitting.

Love the card game, Simon. Roll on the second addition.
And I like the new format, but I could potentially end up watching fewer videos this way as I missed part two quite easily. Will catch up later but first, matlab!
yes please do an editing tutorial

I always wondered what HP model you are using. It's practically in every video, but i can't see the model number. Can you please help me out here?
Your videos are awesome man!! It is a dream of mine to study in england!

ViolaQueen12 thank you so much
I'm not trying to sound rude or smarter than you, but why is knowing how to solve systems of equations with two unknowns a big thing?
I'm hopefully going to be a female scientist one day and I love the fact that you made the picture. You're so inspirational thank you so much for your videos
I don't like filming but I love to edit and practice editing. Is there any resources where I can edit this kind of format of video?
Oh god, imagine a full deck with all the scientists throughout history
I haven't seen the female scientist thing but that is such a cool idea! As a female who will hopefully be a scientist one day, very inspiring :)
Also, im guessing I am roughly a foot shorter than you .. and I am only a few kg lighter. Shit.
you do inspire a lot of people by your balance between phd singing and videomaking. when is book club episode coming
0:25 When you're not a PhD student and just awkwardly sitting there not understanding the joke...
Yes please more editing tips
when you were admitted to your PhD were you allowed to choose any topic in physics?

Can you do videos on cryogenics I want to learn more about it seems so cool
Please catch up on your BookTube and goodreads group.. PLEASE!!!!
What do you plan doing after the PhD?
Living that FITOTRON 5000 lifestyle.
lmao loving the pixels

tbf I'm still amazed that people are watching the vlogs haha

Why don't you get a stipend anymore? I thought they usually cover each year of the PhD?
7:39 Nice nail and gear sticker ;)
Coding Howler Hall of Fame! Yes please
thumbs up, good job , you are the best
Hey Simon, I'm not surprised by the fact that you created a card game. Nor by the fact that you shared my video (execute.nobledeed();). What startled me is that you lost 3kgs in 2 weeks! Holy Clark!

Just curious as a female final year physicist, and from my experience, I think it's the attitude some of our male counterparts have towards us.
Loving the vids!
An interview with Pietro Boselli would actually be quite interesting! Can you make that happen?
Are you planning on putting your thesis online for us to read? I would find it interesting.
When it's finished, yes!
Simon Clark Great!
Would like to know how long it took to make the 'pixel girl' animation. Probably a while.
Only about 15 minutes actually! I've gotten good at making something look like it took like a long time to make haha
I would really appreciate videos about how you make videos Simon! :) #thumbsup
I would love to see videos about editing!
What stream is he always watching?
+Daniel Lewis and Ben save the world! On twitch.com/yogscast
Don't you get distracted by the sunlight hitting your monitor screens? I personally hate that
Highly rate the pokemon surfing theme
You should renew Maryam Mirzakhani's card since she passed away a couple of months ago
There are worse: I once spent 2 weeks debugging python code that had one extra indent on one line...
13:08 what the hell is wrong with the face . Hahaha😀😅😄
Are you a Hamilton fan Simon? I saw a "Burr shot first" sticker on your laptop.
I definitely prefer the short vlogs
Can you talk about the hall of fame next vlog?
top 10!
Can you do also some card with male? I like the idea but maybe have 1/3 cards of male. Could work also better for child... So if there are a male and a girl togheter ...also the boy could fell involve
I dont believe this guy will ever finish his PhD
You and me both mate
Any advice for someone wanting to study Physics at university?
Focus on getting your maths really good - particularly algebra, calculus, and vectors!
