What you need is real lighting and camera/lens grain. The problem with Star Wars episode 4 was that everything was digital and the lighting was not organic, everything was sharp on the camera, while organic video and lighting behave differently. That is why this render still look fake and is not DOF only.

I think this is more for newscasts than Star Wars flicks where reality is much less of a concern
