Overdub Sessions: Bonehead things I've done in my career.

- Here are some simple, hybrid picking guitar stacks on a Texas country song. AND a couple of stories from early on in my career. I've made MANY mistakes along the way from not understanding what was expected of me on a gig to an audition I NEVER should've agreed to. What most people don't include in their self-curated highlight reels on social media are the piles of failures that occur between our successes. We're all human. Embrace the journey, and learn to laugh at yourself.

I don’t know if you were as good as a math teacher as you are as a guitar player, but, to me, you are by far the best at sharing your knowledge as a session player… you are up there with Tim Pierce and Uncle Larry. Your sense of humility, your talent and your communication skills make you and inspiration for me. Keep on following your guts man, you truly make a difference!
Thanks a ton, man! Cheers!
For me, I like all three but Justin actually shows us the writing and recording of parts, I learn a lot form Justin.
Your story about hacking the slow-downer app had me laughing 😂. Reminds me of all the sneaky ways I tried listening to online music before Spotify came on the scene
Wow. Amazing to see your creative process and how you nail the parts. I don't know how much you had planned before you started laying down those tracks, but you appeared to be coming up with it on the fly and then just nailing it each time you played something. No red-light fever at all. And all while shooting a video. I would think that anyone who has come up with guitar parts and recorded them is very impressed by your performance. Much respect.
Thanks a ton! I've put in many, many hours doing all of it. (Well, the video thing is still kinda new). Cheers!
This my favorite channel for understanding how it all works. That tone... wow, I seek but cannot find. Thanks, Justin!
I Keep watching your channel because i always learn something, even late in life in my own small music 'career'. Its also because you come across like a no-bullshit person (I'm British and we have a real aversion to bullshit) Athough you have achieved success in your field, you are still comfortable to talk about failures and everything else that goes into doing music for a living at some level or other. Your videos are always encouraging, positive, and truly informative - thats a big deal.
That's awesome watching you work. 20+ years ago, I came close to moving to Nashville to try and become a studio musician. Was blown away by the talent I seen during the lunch hour on the strip during the week, that I opted to not move. That, and I can't read chart music. After watching you and Pierce and Bukovac, I kinda wished I had taken that leap back then maybe. Love the material. My life is blessed, and wouldn't change it, just love seeing material like this.
Like watching an artist paint a picture, it all comes together in the end....all those parts fit so well ...i think your style is amazing ...
thanks Justin for the video.
Thank you for your honesty about what it takes to “make it”. Even when having all the skills as you clearly do. Stamina and positive attitude to keep going is underrated these days.
I love these anecdotes that probably all working musicians have, the hacks, the workarounds, the gig that got away. All so authentic and fascinating.
Watching you at work is highly immersive and educational, awesome tone on that guitar too.
I used to worship high gain, what a fool I was!
That's not always where it's at. Great video.
Love the humility and ability to look back and not just share how your felt about new experiences, but the struggles and ability to laugh and share your story 🙏🏻
Good stuff! EMAW💜
Awesome playing as always. Love the stories!
Love your playing on this man! That tele sounds awesome!
It’s so much fun watching you work. It inspires me to become a better player.
Nice playing as always. Thanks for sharing your journey.
Great stories Justin, many of us can relate. My failures were way more colorful and memorable than my successes, but still I ride! Thanks for sharing your experiences, advice and insights. Nice Tele too!
As a touring musician now working in cybersecurity. I love this story so much. The slow-downer app part makes my heart happy. You rock dude.
Pearls of wisdom, Justin. Love the channel !
A thoroughly enjoyable watch. Loved watching the build up of layers and great interluding stories. ❤
Love the stories, man
What a fantastic video have a wonderful day Justin also happy new year ❤😊
Hey Justin, thanks for the stories and examples!
Man I enjoy every one of these videos Justin.. learning 10 songs full stop for an audition is crazy. Hope 2024 is a good one for you amigo
Your channel is quickly becoming one of my favorites Justin. Great, valuable content. Thanks for sharing your experience.
This has become my most watched youtube channel. There is always a great take away from every video. Thanks for these videos. The tone you have goin in this one is awesometisity personified!
Love it 😂 being young and starting out makes one very innovative. Love the story about SlowerDowner and Audacity. I used to do something similar in GarageBand
Thanks for posting these man. Idk why but I've always been self-conscious about writing charts for sessions at the house, especially if the changes are kinda tricky. Maybe it's just the comfort of your home thing, I'm not sure, but seeing you do a chart verifies that for me. Thanks dude
thank you for sharing your story. great as always!!!
I love the insights. Thanks
Nice stories and guitar playing. Thanks!
Oh wow, once again I REALLY dig what you're playing (AND what you're saying) all the bass-t from kayo
The teaching Math at K State was that gut check job! 😂 I think all of us out here chasing the music bug have been there. Love this!
Love it man!
Flashbacks of "Footloose"....and I mean that in the most positive way! Awesome playing!! 48k!!!!!
watching every video you put out has really taught me how good this stuff can sound just getting the sound right at the source.
Good stuff Justin. 🔥
I love that tone you have going with your biscuit, I use a similar tone using my Katana and my MIJ biscuit . Very cool tune and your riffs are stellar !
Really Awesome!!🎸🎸🌟 🎸🌟🎸
I love the Slow Downer app story. Genius at work there.
I absolutely love your playing! I can’t tell you how much I would love to get you on some of my songs!
Email me. It's on the "about" page of my channel. Might not show up if you're on a mobile device
Great playing !!!
It's great to see you, Bukovac and Pierce printing FX to the tracks you do. I always found it so much less inspiring when producers pestered me to record bone dry.
Great tone, parts and pocket.
Holy smokes, your pocket is great!
I love how quickly you can get to the right phrase.
I love how you "park noise" of your strings
You’re so good!!🎸🎸🎸🌟🌟🌟 soooo Cooool!!! 🌟🌟🌟
Dig, you nailed those bends towards the end! Fun track. I love country guitar, but never get to practice and play it. Country lyrics, ehhh, depends.
Biscuit sounds great ,
I never gelled with my musical hometown, Portland, so I roam Oregon playing solo. Music is an experience that I have trouble categorizing in terms of success and failure. Cheers Justin!
Lived in LA in the 90's. Every cook at El Pollo Loco was a guitar player and In-and-Out had the drummers. Nashville was a good choice!
Yeah. There are thousands of us here, too.
And big hair was invented by guitar players going from hairnets at El Pollo Loco to the Whiskey a-Go Go
I’d love to see an instructional video on 3-5 country lick examples you feel could inspire (like at 16:30). Keep up the good work. *you’re the only “country” player I follow haha
Just a note about Audacity. This has been my goto audio DAW with MANY features to help me learn guitar. And you it can slow the tempo down WHILE maintaining the pitch. AND it is free and runs on Windows, Macs, and Linux.
Amen!!! I've been shoehorned into being the bandleader on a lot of gigs in the last few years and I make it a point to never audition anyone on more than 3-5 songs: you can learn everything you need to know about someone if you pick LESS material in MORE different styles and keys!
I was in LA when the studio scene was still thriving and was writing for Mix and other mags. Things began to change in the late 80s when people started building their own studios and MIDI was taking over. Most of the studios I visited in LA are gone. And most of the studio players have moved on to other places.
I know that this is not an instrumental song featured here but, I was always partial to rock guitar instrumental music minus the vocals. The chord progression that we heard was spruced up enough that it was highly enjoyable to hear even if it was created to be a country song. I always wondered why there weren't many instrumental songs made. Maybe it goes to show that I am in the minority and most people had rather have their music include a human voice. Guess that is okay too.
Hey Justin, I love your channel. I was hoping you could give me some tips on how to develop my ear. Thanks!
Like everyone else who commented, I live your playing! What really irks me, is I can play some of the exact same CHORDS as you, but they don’t sound killer… or even cool! lol!
Shoot. Audacity itself can slow down entire songs. Maybe it didn't do that back then.
Thanks for sharing your experiences and insights.
It might’ve, and I just didn’t know it
Why does it look like the master out on your interface is clipping the whole time? But the other green meter looks great. It sounds amazing.
wondering do you think about transitioning of the predominant parts between the layerings to play live ?
You really rock Justin. Should I say country. Well, who cares, what you do is really really great. Again again, thanks… Btw, you have a great tone for sure, but could you ever consider using ex the new’ish UA Dream or similar? Just curious…
I’ll have to check it out!
Had a similar experience to the one you recall at 8:30. That was the moment I knew I preferred doing guitar and music as a hobby. If I can’t get paid to play my own stuff, then I’d rather get paid doing something else. I always admire how you guys can just go with it and get the job done. That’s like a super power I don’t possess 😂.
Totally get it. I think of it as straddling the line between artist and plumber. Some days you really are creating art; some days you show up with tools to do a job. It's all good.
Justin,
Excellent video content. I really enjoyed your creativity and stories. It let's me laugh at myself in my beginner journey at 71. 😊
I enjoyed your story about using Slowdowner in conjunction with Audacity. I have done the exact same thing! I too couldn't fathom spending the 40 bucks at the time for Slowdoner, although I eventually ponied it up. 😂 And Audacity is probably the single best product for the poor working musician, or anyone who wants to record on computer. I'll buy the beers next time I'm down Nashville way! 🍻
Fun to watch this and hear the stories. Are all the effects recorded to the guitar track or to a separate track?
I usually print them to the guitar track
For the intro's las note, what if you did a 1 semitone hammer on up to that last note? I think it would make that whole into roll better.
Enjoyed the video. Good info as usual. Do you run your phaser before or after your drives?
It's after the Throbak fuzz. It's a Mobius patch.
Hey Justin, digging you channel. Question for you on the Sarge amp, do you know how the sarge amp compares to the Road amp,did you even try one of those. Really like you tone with the Sarge, but they are tough to find at a decent price but seem to be more road amps out there. Thanks for your time.
I’ve only played a Sarge and a Super Sarge (it’s the same circuit with two more power tubes, so it has more headroom). I haven’t played one I didn’t like.
just wondering . with all the layering of guitar parts how do proform it live I love th sound I have done the same on some of my recordings. But always felt the lack live not giving the aud. the true sound of the song.
That’s a fairly lengthy answer. I’ll do a video on this soon
A bit Alan Jackson maybe? I like it, great playing 😊
those drums tho!
@Justin - did you track the solo on Shannon Labrie’s “It’s Political” from 2013? If so - I would *love* seeing a video run though of how that came together as it’s one of my favorite guitar solos of all time. 🤘🤘
Yep that's me. Such a great record to be a part of. Shannon is great.
@@JustinOstrander so awesome man, absolutely brilliant playing. This is my official request for a video on that song or that whole record :)
I don’t like country but I like your videos 😊
hey Justin , I see that your ox box is dark. What are you using to track/record that amp? is that the cab mic’d in your garage?👊great story bro…thnx for sharing it! And of course killin playing.
It's the cab in the garage, yep
In your opinion is there anything comparable to your Sarge amp that is low wattage and somewhat affordable? It sounds sort of tweedy but much sweeter to me. Love your channel man. Rock on
It sounds like a cross between an AC15 and a 5E3 Deluxe to me. I have heard other players sound really good through the Swart stuff. Maybe that’s kind of similar?
Just to be clear I have used backing tracks to give the music a more record sound.
Man, that comment about teaching college math and the kids hating it and hating you - yeah, that’s why I don’t want to teach anymore. (I went into administration.)
I know Terri Clark!!!! Chick with the hat!!!!:) and that's from 30 years ago!
I learn something every time I watch your videos. You pointed out in a recent video where you were critiquing a band that they soloed over the vocals. When you get a song how do you know where the vocals are in the song?
They are usually there when I’m tracking. I mute them or turn them way down for my videos, just so I don’t give it away before the artist releases it.
@@JustinOstrander Thanks
I wish I could understand how to play that kind of rhythmic hybrid pattern with the right hand. How about a lesson on the right hand?
Are you typically receiving a multitrack, stems or a mix of some sort you’re recording along to?
I get all kinds. I generally ask for stems.
Hot take: White Guard Teles > Black Guard Teles
Click track or metronome?
Click track.
New Supro?
I’ve had the Supro for quite a while. It’s a great amp that I should use more often
Did u just oil that neck?
No. The neck is original. Body only refin
Love your vids.! But not this song 😩
drums too loud, Justin
