I read Fogerty’s book. In the latter part off the book he talks about “learning” things from other guitarists. He asked Ricky Skaggs for a lesson. He is not afraid to admit that there are a lot of guitarists that he admires. I recommend the book to fans is of Fogerty. It’s a little tough to read in the early parts due to bitterness from his disputes with former band members and the record company. The writing of the book must’ve been cathartic as in the latter part of the book he really seems to be at peace with himself and his past. The bottom line is Fogerty is one of the one of the most beloved people in music. His music just touches people in a way similar to Springsteen and Petty. If there was a Mount Rushmore for American rockers, Fogerty would be up there.
I saw CCR before Woodstock. They were playing a show in Connecticut. at the time I was in a band and I could play all their songs so I was very familiar with their songs. They sounded perfect what a great show.
Saw Tina and John both perform in Melbourne Australia. 2 singers that put on such great shows. I got to see John perform the whole LP of Cosmo's Factory, and that was awesome. Never saw an artist perform a whole album before. 2 shows that will stay with me till I die.
I have seen John Fogerty twice 'live' - the 1st time was way back in 1972 with the stripped down CCR just prior to them disbanding, wow that was an amazing concert they still had that magic sound despite John's vocals being shredded from a world tour, he still belted out those wonderful songs. The 2nd time was in 2011, and it was so wonderful to hear 'Born on The Bayou' begin the concert, my hair was standing up. What a great bunch of stories from Tom
I saw CCR in the late 60s on Ohau, now live in Kentucky by the Green River, what a song, and the river is most definitly green, kinda swollen up right now.
I couldn't agree more!! I discovered "Thanks for Giving a Damn" and this channel by searching for Towns related content back when all the videos were just clips of the podcast... what I call the cassette Era. Since then I have learned so much and have been turned on to so much music history. It's even lead me to things like the Phil Kaufman autobiography on Audible. This is by far my favorite channel. I can proudly say I've watched every video and listen to every TFGAD podcast episode.
CCR was my first rock and roll band- discovered, of course, I’m my parents records. What they created was timeless, good music. What really set the hook was a life album I picked up when I was driving age- “From Berkeley, California, Creedence Clearwater Revival!!!” I’ve been hooked to a strong bass line and jam band guitar solos every since.
It is good to get this down while Guys like John, and Tom are still important -( to some of us ) This could be part of a historical Archive some day when we are all gone !
I was very aware of CCR and listened to his music since I was 5 years old on 1969...I would sit in between the built in 15" speakers on the long counsel stereo. I remember listening to Green River and Willy & the Poor Boys, over and over. Songs like Effigy and Wrote a Song for Everyone stood out but so did the others. Then when Cosmo's came out and I sat in the same spot hearing Ramble Tamble for the first time blew me away; that mid-section was so hypnotic and I still think to this day one of the best guitar solos that I have ever heard. Effigy was also the same way. I remember that I never listened to kiddie music and my music teacher at the time thought that it was really abnormal for a kid my age to do that. Fogerty knew how to make AM radio sound like gold. To this day I remember hearing "Up Around the Bend" on the radio one day when I was outside playing in the yard. I looked up at the sky and it was the deepest blue that I had ever seen and that has always stuck with me. The sound of his voice was beyond a miracle for me, the sound of those records was one of a kind and will never be copped...I have never stopped liking CCR or John Fogerty and never will.
23 years ago. Funny how the time is going by in chunks. We played some funky gigs in the early 70's sometimes to older crowds. One tune that everyone got up to dance to was Proud Mary.
Otis, you’re a great interviewer…you know how to give space to your guests and let them shine. Like a world class rhythm player! I could listen to Buk stories all day! ✌️
Just discovered Tom's RUclips channel. I'm totally addicted. I spent three days bingeing on it watching all of the studio footage. You've got to check it out!
I grew up in the 60s and 70s and even at my age now (65) I'm still learning the names of the unsung heroes of popular music. Thank you for introducing me to Tom Bukovac. These low profile support musicians are becoming as known to me as the big time stars they played with. It's opening up a new dimension to the music I am so familiar with.
My Mother, may she she RIP, turned me on to Creedence in 2000, and like those who came before and still to come, got a guitar and the ENTIRE CCR songbook. Apparently back in the 60s-70s my Mom REALLY wanted to play their music, so she begged and begged, got the cheapest guitar, and 5 lessons they had to pay for in advance! Sadly she gave up after one lesson. So 40 years later when the SAME THING happens to her son and I master the rhythm and vocal parts in about 5 months just me, some and the chord book! She was DELIGHTED!!! Sadly she passed shortly thereafter. Thanks for these insightful vids!!!
Nothing sets you up for success more than deciding to be a lifetime learner and remaining humble enough to know there is always more to learn. Thanks Otis and Tom.
I had CCR tapes and 45’s from the beginning. Always loved them and John Fogarty especially. I used have all the vinyl albums, including John’s Blue Ridge Rangers. There is a chance I will see John and meet him this summer. A friend of mine interviewed John at a MLB spring trading game years ago. Just as the interview started, “Centerfield” came on over the PA system. Cool.
Thank you Otis, I was twelve years old at my first lunch time "sock hop" in the school gym in 1970 when I first heard CCR Pagan Baby . I've been chasing down that sound and vibe since then. I still some times dust off my old Fantasy vinyl and crank it to the max when doing chores around the house .
I recently watched the CCR documentary Travelin' Band. Anyone who loves CCR should check it out. Really excellent view into the band in their heyday. Otis, I hope you have a few more videos with Tom. I really dig these stories!
So cool. I remember getting my drivers license and my fathers band wanted to see Fogerty at a festival. So they proposed that I drive them to the festival, I could do what I want, hang out with friends and what not, but I had to stay sober and drive them back the same night in my fathers old VW breadvan that could fit them all. Fogerty was great (he started tapping?! Maybe that's what he picked up from Uncle Larry messing around). Two hour show. He was about 63 at that point. Not at single drop of water during his set. Drove my fathers band home. Car died a few times and we had to push it into a gas station just 50 meters before a scheduled fuel, as all meters were broke on the console. Fun day!
At 8:20, when John Fogerty played lead was Tom Bukovac emulating Tom Fogerty's rhythm parts? The steady rhythmic support and two guitar interplay is integral to CCR's music, akin to Malcolm Young's guitar supporting Angus Young's leads.
I love this video best of all Otis his videos. I watched this like three times. I feel like I’m just like sitting in the room with my guitar in the case, getting ready for something and I’m just with the coolest guys telling me the coolest stuff and just like it’s just so cool.
Hendrix was the headliner for Woodstock. But I believe the rest. I saw John Fogerty when he turned 70 a few years back, and he was tapping(WHAT?), and doing stuff I was not expecting. He was incredible.
Hey Otis...love what you're doing by documenting all these great stories from the people that were there. For a Hoosier, you're alright, (speaking as a Kentuckian)...😉
Hey Otis great interview!! 3 people that I could hear tell stories forever is one of my all time favorite players Kenny Vaughn, Chuck Mead , Tom Bukuvac !!! I’m glad to see him on here I could listen to these for hours!!
I was hoping there were more Uncle Larry stories ... I think I've been following both of you for almost three years now. Thank you, Otis! 🙏🏻 Be good to you 🤍💛
Great to hear someone talking positive about John Fogerty. Many people, who may not even have known him personally, speak negatively about him. It was always clear to me that despite his huge success, John must have had a tough time at CCR, squeezed between management and his bandmates (including his brother), who were all working against him.
Dude, these are my favorite bits. Bukovac is a fuckin legend, and he's SOOO COOL in conversation. I'm astonished you can remember all that shit, man, I was doing my band thing in the late 80s, early 90s, and I REGULARLY will have one of the other guys go, "Hey, you remember...?" and the answer is uniformly, "Nope. No recollection whatsoever".
Otis, I just want to thank you for these vids. I got turned on to you in the days before I saw you play a set ahead of TS in grand Rapids, MI not that long ago and have been tuned in since. Just thanks, brother.
OG I'm a fan ,this is great one it's up there with you trip to paradises with JP Bukovc is one hardest working grinder and has toured and played with everybody !!! Good stuff brother

It’s great to hear Tom is a nice guy. I’d mostly heard stories about the 80’s when he was bitter and drinking hard. So glad to see him turnaround and have a family, get his majority ownership back in his songs, etc. Ridiculous body of work in a very short time
Great video! Back at late 60s high school dances CCR songs were about the only tunes even this rhythm-challenged white boy could dance to. Thanks guys!
Wonderful insight. Never knew about John tuning down a whole step. Big ol' power chord E, big ol' hillbilly B7 and A - I love that and now I'm gonna have to go home and try that out. Creedence Gold and More Creedence Gold were a young man's guitar school back in the day.
Some friends were working with Shel Talmy (yes) on a record in the San Fernando Valley where John had a room booked out at Fox Run studios. Saw him for a moment, he signed a Milwaukee Brewers deck of cards.
I saw Buk and John Fogerty at one of the Jim Irsay gigs. It’s not just that people love all the CCR hits, it’s that John has waaaay more stage presence and puts on a better show than any other musician on that stage.
Subscribe to Tom's channel and tell him Otis sent ya. It's one of the best things on the internet.

I could listen to Tom tell stories (or play guitar) for hours..
You can, check out his channel...
This guy is awesome.I showed John Fogarty some licks and he wanted to learn as good as he is
Very cool. I like CCR more and more the older I get. So deep, so pure and simple. I think those records do belong in the spiritual bin.
Saw Tina and John both perform in Melbourne Australia. 2 singers that put on such great shows. I got to see John perform the whole LP of Cosmo's Factory, and that was awesome. Never saw an artist perform a whole album before. 2 shows that will stay with me till I die.
John Fogerty’s songs are incredible. His run of tunes is like a genre, and that voice!
