Hitmaker. Buk is a class act and a top notch player. I also missed meeting Tom Petty. I had aftershow passes but the band canceled the meet and greet. I wasn't mad, the band invited me to the show and treated me great for the evening. Class people all of them. I did get to see Tom play a few times, he was always amazing in concert.

I think he was self medicating and just resting and taking as much time as he could to prepare for the show. In tons of pain. Apparently his hip had already cracked and had been that way for some time and he was just pushing thru with meds. Insane. I've heard other stories where he was very social, inviting the opening band to come grill out with them and what not by the bus behind the hotel

Thanks for sharing these stories, Tom! I was at the gig in Atlanta for the 2017 tour. We really enjoyed the Walsh set, especially "Rocky Mountain Way." The sets were actually very short for the Heartbreakers compared to previous tours, and there were a lot fewer deep cuts. "I Should Have Known It" was a real highlight.

I think Tom's way to modest, as he is a great storyteller!!

I attended the University of Florida a few years before Petty got "American Girl" on the charts. He had lived in Gainesville and worked as a maintenance guy on the campus. He was our hometown hero. I was doing an internship in respiratory therapy and working a graveyard shift at a hospital when the song came out. On days off I would walk around town and go to all night places to hang out. I walked out of a 24 hour bowling alley, sat in my 1968 AMC Javellin and turned on the radio and heard those opening chords and was totally hypnotized. It wasn't like anything else on the radio at that time and it spoke to my inner "Florida Man".
