John's original Rickenbacker was not stolen, he gave it away to some kid after CCR crumbled. And it was not a 360, it was 325. He just recently got it back! What a great story and happy ending!
Hi John & family, thank you for all the wonderful music over the years...when I came back from Vietnam I bought a home in Great falls, Montana just down from your grandmother's home.....in time she had to go to a care facility and my wife and I bought some things when your mom came up to settle the estate...your art form gave me hope in Vietnam...thank you....Paul Scarpelli
It's interesting to see Shane with a Rickenbacker that looks so similar to his dad's famous guitar that was still missing at the time. My name can be added to those who are delighted that John got his special guitar back.
I love how a well used and extreme traveled 1970 Les Paul looks that good at 8:20 but other Les Pauls from the 70's can look like they baked in the sun for decades. Giving a shit about your guitar can go along way. Great vid !!
The plaque inscription from John's wife is very moving, I remember feeling so happy when John began playing his CCR songs again, it was like the sun coming out on a damp, cold day, it inspired me. Thanks John.
Good old Fogerty doesn't controlled his own rig but has enough faith in the guy in this video to do so . This guy knows what he's doin so give him the respect he desurves . love to have his job and that tremolo box .
Moe, Larry and Curly. Total freekin class John. I love you for what you do for music. Good vibes all the way. One of the first lp's I had as a kid was Willy and the Poor Boys. The guitar tracks are honed into my very being and still hear them in my dreams. Great tone is never forgotten or ignored. Timeless..
In ‘69, John had a Gibson ES-175, which he used on the ‘Bayou Country’ album, stolen out of his car, not a Rickenbacker. From that point is when he found the Black Beauty Les Paul Custom and recorded such classics as Bad Moon Rising, Fortunate Son, Run Through The Jungle, etc. The Rickenbacker is a 325 Rose Morris model(imported 3/4 scale) John’s ‘ACME’ Rickenbacker 325 had a humbucker installed in the bridge position in place of the toaster pickup.
His 1st Les Paul tuned down to Open D replaced his stolen ES-175 in January 1969. Actually sometime in the spring of 1969, Fogerty actually bought another Les Paul Custom and had it modified to have the neck shortened to 3/4 scale. He put a Bigsby on that and tuned it to Standard tuning. Starting in late ‘69/early ‘70 he started retire his Rickenbacker and his 2nd Les Paul Custom that was 3/4 scale as his main guitar.
Finally a musician who appreciates the P-90. Nowadays every man and his dog wet their pants over PAF pups so much that it seems like they like them because it's cool to be in that club. I have a '56 Goldtop and I love P-90s even with the 60 cycle hum which can easily be addressed by TURNING IT UP or finding that sweet spot on the stage [like we do with indoor TV aerials].
What would have made this more fantastic than it was would have been the playing of the guitars through the electronics so we could hear what each does! I now just enough about the controllers to get shocked so I think it would have been very informative. I always thought John and others just plugged in and started playing and every now and then used a foot controller or two. This stuff is amazing and that guy that is in charge has a dream job!
sam bergstein Cool.I once talked to Kenny at a drumming seminar he was doing and hes about the nicest guy in the world.Told me a lot of great stories. He said you don't want to mess up in Fogerty's band because everyone can play drums and they can hear the slightest mistake. He was laughing about it.A real gentleman Kenny is.
Danny Dine Kenny was quite cool:-) It was a couple months prior that I met Joe Satriani walking in NYC who was VERY cool too. No more name dropping on my end for now!:-0
That was my thought. There could have been exceptions but as far as I know from '68 they were stoptail and tunamatic bridges. The "Gibson" embossed pickup covers point to a 70s reissue.
The Goldtop is a 1972 made 54 reissue. You can tell by wrap around tailpiece and lack of bridge, along with the Gibson embossed plastic covers on the pickups.
I have a couple of old CCR posters with John playing a Les Paul very similar to the "black beauty" shown by Shane, but the one on the posters has red in between and almost around the pickups. Wonder what happened to THAT guitar?🎸
Fogerty is one of the greatest guitarist of all time in music. Rolling Stone Magazine #40 ranking him with Queen's Brian May at #39 under rates them so much.
More like greatest song writer. His sound is not hard to replicate and his songs are not hard to play. they are just damn good songs. He wrote and owns them. Some of the other members from the original band no doubt have writing credits on some of the songs and they play and perform live for ticket sales and profit. Simple as that.
I used a deluxe reverb the entire time I was out playing live. such a versatile little amp that isn't hard to carry. You can get those tubes hot and with just bit of an over drive / distortion pedal depending on what speaker you are using you copy almost any amp out there for a live setting. More importantly with out being tooo loud.
at 0:41 He says that first LP Custom is "a mid to late 90s" but it has a volute. perhaps it was a 90s reissue of a 70s-era Custom? were they even doing that just 20 years after the initial Norlin changes. I see it has the modern (non-milk bottle) larger grovers. but those could've been added after the fact as well. guess we'll never know
8:30 I supposed this was the first time I saw a Premier guy hold one of the guitars. I thought it was forbidden by Premier, to avoid acidents due to some pricey gears. BTW, I´d love to watch a Radiohead Rig Rundown.
I really like bazooka joes rig rundowns. He never asks about picks or strings though. Same with the guy who did the Joan Jett rig rundown. He's great but sometimes forgets to ask about picks and strings.
Premier Guitar, Can you do a U2 rig rundown, they have just started their new tour, and The Edge has just UPDATED his rig with new guitars and effects, and Adam Clayton has got a few new basses too, and also has a new signature Fender bass out.
huh, i've seen that diezel amp all over the place but never really taken note of it. it seems like a very versetile amp considering the players i've seen play them. from john fogerty here, tim pierce in his studio and bill kelliher with mastodon.
So that is not the same black Gibson that Shane uses? The guitar from his wife, is that different in sound verses the other two Gibsons? What is the guitar that he uses for Keep on Chouglin? I know it is blue. Did he also use another one shaped like that for Ramble Tamble which I know is for a burst type of color. What Rickenbacker did he use back in the day through the late 90's? Why does John not use that guitar anymore? He used it for Susie Q and I Put A Spell On You. He also used a cherry sunburst Lespaul for Up around the Bend, Rockin All Over The World and Waling in a Hurricane. Does he still use that? Does he still have that red telecaster for most of his songs. I saw a similar on RUclips one still played in 2013 but it was kind of different for the song Train of Fools? There was a purple guitar in the 80's and early 90's. What was the brand and where is it now? What about his acoustic guitars? I think he has at least two. Sorry for all of these questions. I just wanted to check in and make sure.
Aaron Springborn He has over 300 guitars in his collection. The Blue one for "Keep On Chooglin" is an Ernie Ball Music man Axis. The Red one he sometimes plays on "Looking Out My Back Door" is an Ernie Ball Music Man John Patrucci. Lately hes been switching to Bill Crook customs because hes been teaming up with Brad Paisley. He has one red and white one from Fender custom shop its a Tele with a G bender and strat middle pick up. It has a bigger ticker body than a normal tele. He wanted a deeper snappy sound.
Oh and the acoustics he uses are mostly Taylors. He has a Gibson that he played with Keith Urban on 'Rambunctious Boy" but he likes the sound of the Taylor's. Purple one your talking about is an Ibanez.
+BloozeDaddy Probably some kind of tape to keep the string from ringing out and creating a weird noise when he does a lot of stops.... Also he could have issues breaking strings on the stop tail but he doesn't want to switch because the hardware is so old and nice looking, so he just slaps some tape on there to protect them from sharp edges.
blindsidedka it looks too clean to be tape....I just figured it was some after market gadget....I never had issues with overtones from strings past the bridge...there's so much tension there. I'll have to look around and see if I can figure out what it is. It's possible they just cut their own shrinkwrap or something. It's pretty funny looking at all that stuff when you consider Fogerty toured with CCR with an amp w/ tremelo and muff fuzz and that was it.
That baseball guitar is really ingenious. I'm surprised Gibson did a custom plaid top LP. Most of the time they tell the artist that it can't be done and to pound sand. Until the artist goes somewhere else to get it built, becomes iconic and whose knocking at your back door? Yep Gibson.
Glad he has his son playing since all the bad blood with the old CCR group..He did not play for a long time..and when he did come out in 1985 they tried to sue him for sounding like John Fogerty? The Judge told them to get out of his court..I saw CCR 6 times at the Hollywood Bowl in 1968-69 sounds just like the LP only better
When he's showing John Fogerty's Les Paul Custom I believe he made an error. The customs were known to be all mahogany. No maple cap. Les Paul himself actually preferred that darker, warmer tone hence why he played one. He also mentions the 50s ones were all mahogany without the maple cap. The 50's Les Paul's definitely had maple caps with the exception of Custom models and the lower Junior models. But hey, as a guitar tech he probably has a lot to keep up with and he's most likely exhausted. I'm sure he didn't mean to say what he did. My comment is mostly to keep others from being misinformed on vintage Les Paul specs.

Yeah, it was a 175 that got stolen.
Also, John himself said it was stolen in Albany, CA not NY.

When he played 3 hours in a row in the Luna Park at Buenos Aires, I can't believe I can testify how awesome John Fogerty is.
I love how a well used and extreme traveled 1970 Les Paul looks that good at 8:20 but other Les Pauls from the 70's can look like they baked in the sun for decades. Giving a shit about your guitar can go along way. Great vid !!

When arch a-hole Saul Zaentz sold Fantasy Records in 2004, JF was able to get back the performance rights to his CCR songs.
instablaster
@@James_Bowie "Zanz Kant Danz" and "Mr. Greed", two of the best songs about Zaentz (who really was an a-hole!).

Thank you. So nice to not get flamed every time.
I would like to see an updated rigdown on John Fogerty's gear one day!!!!❤️🎸🎶😎
John´s got one of the best guitar tones ever. It took me alomost 50 yrs to appreciate it 😂
Moe, Larry and Curly. Total freekin class John. I love you for what you do for music. Good vibes all the way. I love how the tech says the pedal system is "really very simple"
You can really tell this PG guy really loves his job
Rebecca was the best..she cared
LOVE THE WAY HE KEEPS REFERRING TO HIS DAD AS FOGERTY. LIKE HE'S JUST SOME GUY IN THE BAND WHO JUST HAPPENS TO HAVE HIS LAST NAME TOO.
Yeah, nice way to show Shane some respect. Good move on interviewer's part.

I love how, when talking about rack equipment the tech ALWAYS says, "its much more simple than it looks." 95 percent of the time they say that.
That plaque from his wife ❤️😭
Another great Rig Rundown. Thanks John, you do a fine job.
Shane and Dave Whiston did a great job
Both of my Lesters are 12 pounds rock on Fogerty. Love this rig down. Best ever! Great job John B.
Seeing Mr Fogerty in 09' doing a free concert at South Street Seaport was VERY cool! Got a gig used autographed drum stick from Kenny Aronoff
sam bergstein Cool.I once talked to Kenny at a drumming seminar he was doing and hes about the nicest guy in the world.Told me a lot of great stories. He said you don't want to mess up in Fogerty's band because everyone can play drums and they can hear the slightest mistake. He was laughing about it.A real gentleman Kenny is.

sam bergstein It seems like a lot of these great musicians are also great people.
Kenny is one of the best on the planet!
Of course. They're making tons of money making the greatest rock and roll in the world. I'd be pretty happy too. Ha!
I like how the tech was like "You're not asking me gear questions; I'm going to ignore you and talk about it"
Nice work again JB, dig your interviews.
Was at the show when john got his plaid guitar, st. Johns nl baby!
Good Rig Rundown.
Read the plaque on the plaid guitar. Yea, it got to me.
9:24 It looks like a '54 or early '55 to me... starting in late '55 and '56, there was no wraptail anymore, if I remember properly :)
That was my thought. There could have been exceptions but as far as I know from '68 they were stoptail and tunamatic bridges. The "Gibson" embossed pickup covers point to a 70s reissue.
Loving that Strymon gear, especially the Deco & the Big Sky!
Love John B. and John F.
Krantz Bring Dirks back.
A great rundown of the best straight ahead rocker!
I think that "68'" Goldtop looks to be like a '72 goldtop because of the embossed Gibson pickup covers.
Bazooka !!!, omg, amazing !!!, i’m back to the 80’ !!!!!🤩
"This is his fav goldtop" man he got so many Les Pauls already. I'm happy with my 84 pink tokai strat super edition, but damn he got the good toys.
The Goldtop is a 1972 made 54 reissue. You can tell by wrap around tailpiece and lack of bridge, along with the Gibson embossed plastic covers on the pickups.
John's Own Fortunate Son. LOL I'm sorry dude. I couldn't stop myself. I'm sure you've heard this same quote a million x's
Big love for John................
Wow, not even the Voodoo Vibe pedal can do simultaneous Vibrato and Tremelo! Thats a sweet pedal
Cornford are no more but martin Kidd is now doing victory amps. They are awesome!!!
Without these guys. The star is just wingin' it.

Please do a tame impala rig rundown when you guys have a chance
Fenando padilla mendoza Kevin's set-up is actually deceptively simple from what I've seen. Still sounds fantastic though.
I think the goldie with the wrap a round is a 72. They reissued the 54's in that year and it has the 'Gibson' emboss on the pickup covers.
you are correct i later found out it is a '72 '54 reissue. i found another later which hasn't gone on the road. dave
The wraparound on that guitar seems to have no adjustment screws as far as I can see. Is that normal or has someone put a stop tail on it?

Fender really nailed it. You can get through any night with a deluxe.

68 Goldtop P90, wrap, is a Dream. Trade my whole arsenal, for a Her.
His first Ricks were 3/4 sized 325s, one of which he put a Gibson pickup in and nothing like a 330/360 etc.
That is correct. Dave
They should have called this John & _Shane_ Fogerty Rig Rundown!
great and sweet guy ...
I really like bazooka joes rig rundowns. He never asks about picks or strings though. Same with the guy who did the Joan Jett rig rundown. He's great but sometimes forgets to ask about picks and strings.

yeah. sure. great. aha. sure, yeah!

Premier Guitar,
Can you do a U2 rig rundown, they have just started their new tour, and The Edge has just UPDATED his rig with new guitars and effects, and Adam Clayton has got a few new basses too, and also has a new signature Fender bass out.

Niall Duffy I think it would take multiple episodes to handle the Edge's rig.
LOL
King Lee
They'd never agree. You might see Bono's autotuner. Plus it would take HOURS.

Yes he has been since last year. Even uses on Live From 50 Year Trip: Live at Red Rocks

57 custom is all mahogany.

I'm a HUGE fan of Fogerty and CCR's music but you can tell he's a neurotic genius. Both his son and the tech guy looked rattled.
I'm playing in a CCR cover band as a great Fogerty's fan and in this case I agree with you guy..very rattled, haha
Bohlinger is a really cool guy. I bet he'd be fun to shoot the breeze with.
That Black “Custom” LP is not a “Black Beauty”..which is actually a mid-‘50’s Les Paul.
Bollinger is a dork :-)...he should have asked about the string gauge on the black les paul tuned down to D....shoot. Or did i miss it?

his dad gave it to him without all the details..i guess
