    Every farmer saved money this winter because the weather was much better and dryer. You wouldn’t have been able to keep them out that long last year anyway even with the unroller. You never took into consideration the damage and poaching it has caused keeping your animals out for so long. You’d imagine those fields will be slow to recover next year. Good job all the same.

    • @baldysfarm
      @baldysfarm 7 дней назад

      Padraig, you most definitely aren’t farming in Leicestershire if you think this back ends been dry! We had record wet weather in 2023 and the same this autumn/winter so it’s very much a fair comparison. Also on the point of poaching. When cattle are on daily moves and deferred grazing, poaching is practically non existent even in periods of heavy rain. We are also on heavy clay soils so not at all free draining land. Surface poaching has no impact on grass growth whatsoever so ever but even still fields deferred and grazed late last year won’t be the first fields to be grazed come the spring. That’s why we have a rigorous grazing plan and start shutting up fields for turn out from September. It allows us to create a grazing wedge to facilitate early turnout.

    • @padraig421
      @padraig421 7 дней назад

       yeah that’s what I’m saying, of course your gonna save money this year because the back end was dryer and milder then 2023. I’m just saying there’s too many variables to make accurate calculations. Every farmer saved money this year. It’d be interesting to see the numbers if you had unroller in 2023 because I don’t think you’d have been able to keep them out long at all considering wet conditions. You’re saying surface poaching has no impact on grass growth. However it is proven repeated surface poaching will have quite a large impact on grass growth. Grass growth is lowered by at least 20% after repeated surface poaching. I just think you have take into consideration that the weather has been good this year in comparison to other years. I just think yes it’s a good job this year but it’s about finding that happy medium. If your calculations were accurate sure every farmer should be keeping there animals out. Yes you save a lot having them outside but unfortunately the weather and ground conditions are the main factors. Also from what I can see you were strip grazing them so I wouldn’t say that is moving them every day. I would say a paddock system would be moving them every day. If every back end was as good as this we’d be happy out but unfortunately that’s not the case. 👍

    • @baldysfarm
      @baldysfarm 7 дней назад

      @@padraig421 I don't think your understanding what I'm saying here. Were we live, last year we had the wettest autumn/winter on record and this year it had been WETTER! So we would have been able to get the same results. The reason why I compared to last year is that it is the closest comparison there could possibly been. There also won't be a problem with 'repeated' surface poaching when you use a grazing plan because you won't be repeatedly moving over the same ground during a period where poaching will take place. With deferred grazing you also end up with a 'heavier' canopy which mitigates any poaching potential. Also, if you have balance soil biology and a well established root profile, the spring grass growth will remove any compaction caused by wintering. That's also the benefit of bale unrolling as you aren't concentrating your cattle in one place. It's also the benefit of having lighter cows. Given the fact that this is the wettest autumn/winter we have experienced and the fact that we are on heavy clay soils, there is no reason why any farmer who made the effort to plan accordingly, couldn't do what we have done. It's all mindset.

    The machine was obviously been a good investment but I think your calculations are overly simple... surely the machine dosnt run for free. You were back and over using it, surely it's slower rolling out bales and wires than feeding in front of a barrier. However I'd also say you have additional savings not having to take out dung, spread etc

    • @baldysfarm
      @baldysfarm 9 дней назад

      Yes that’s true but two things to take into account there. Firstly, we had to check the stock, so fed them whilst we were there. So the extra would only be the rolling out of the bales, not the whole travelling, fences etc. Secondly, it was faster and used my less diesel to unroll the bales as opposed to running a telehandler, bales shedder, tractor etc to feed and bed in the yard. And as you say, mucking out and spreading costs. So even if those costs where included it would only be be to the benefit of the bales unroller.

    Why do you want the cow weight to be low? Is it a bigger cow consumes more food and costs more to keep??

    • @baldysfarm
      @baldysfarm 13 дней назад

      Great question with quite a long answer. Party yes. Larger cows eat more food so theoretically your land can’t carry as many. Also, larger cows don’t have bigger calves, that’s all down to pelvic area, and that doesn’t change when you get bigger cows. We are also looking at weaning efficiency, so 600kg cows that wean a calf at 300kg if really efficient. A larger cow won’t wean a larger calf so theoretically efficiency is much lower. Also, when looking at the ability to keep cattle out longer into the winters etc. smaller, lighter cows have less impact and are more capable of holding body condition. I could keep going on. But when it comes down to it, there is no science that suggests a larger cows is better for your bottom line. Actually, it all points to the opposite.

    Reference the grazing of stubble and adding hay to arable fields - I did this in 2021 in Dorset. Main challenge for the arable side was the added hay that needed harrowing. Other than that in some areas the cattle ALSO added a primary cultivation. This was on chalk arable land so free draining but would get very muddy if the wrong weather came and they didnt have enough fresh area to run onto or back to. GREAT TO SEE COWS OUTSIDE!!

    I judge our herd's maternal ability based upon how many calves are small enough to get out, this year's the first time its been none so we must be getting somewhere 👌🏼 Love the idea of sharing your spreadsheet, it's very similar to mine, I then use the data to rank the cows for the 4 metrics calf weight, dlwg, 200d weight and cow efficiency. Once I've totalled up the ranking points across the 4 categories the lowest scoring cow is my top cow. Next step i think would be to find a way to express the differences of performance in terms of income relative to the average cow or a set benchmark as it would give more evidence-based reason to cull.
