Dane's Spoons
Хорватия
Добавлен 16 июл 2019
I make wooden spoons from storm fallen timber. All work is done completely with hand tools, with axe and knives. I decorate the spoons using a technique called kolrosing, which I combine with milk paint. To see more of my finished work or order a spoon visit my Instagram page or email me at danesspoons@gmail.com.

Axing Out a Butter Spreader. Craft in the Woods With Relaxing Bird Sounds. ASMR

In this video you can see how I axe out a butter spreader. The way I work on each piece develops over time so I can axe out the piece as fast as possible with the least amount of energy expenditure. This is how I currently axe out the butter spreaders. It involves knife work for parts where that is easier and lessens the chance of breaking. Making a living out of craft is different than a hobby...

I’m glad to see that you’re using standard carving knives. I like your style. Thanks 😎
Started with a Mora 106 for kolrosing long time ago and I'm still using it 🙂
hi dane, what sort of wood is this?
You are so talented... I came here from Facebook....all I can say is your art is breathtaking
Thank you. Glad you like my work 🙂
I'm curious to know how much time it takes to make just one spoon
Depends really,it's a continuous constant stream of spoons for me, and takes many years of work to get to a point you can make them viably at a reasonable speed and yet with as high quality as possible
In this video you saw the axing of a blank, before that is sourcing wood, hand sawing and splitting. After axing I hand carve them and then they dry. Then come the finishing cuts and in the end decoration 🙂
Hilarious, great idea....lol...... so funny
Thanks. You get strange ideas when you're alone in the woods all day 😂
Yummy
They are great 🙂
🎉❤beautiful art...
Thank you 🙂
Added this video to my spoon carving tutorial playlist, as it's very informative for beginners to think about, collecting and processing wood.
Glad you liked the video 🙂
Would like to see a video on finish carving.
There are several of those on my channel of various spoons so check those out. I carve a cooking spoon in a couple of them. Thank you 🙂
I use my eating spoon and coffee scoop all the time. Such cracking work. These videos are a pleasure too.
So glad to hear that my friend. Enjoy them 🙂
I am sure this spoon will be beautiful when you are done with it. And you make this look so easy.😮
Thank you. I had lots of practice. Just finishing the spoon today 🙂
@@danesspoons I was just admiring your work on your Instagram page. They are so beautiful!! I honestly could fill my crock with all of your spoons♥️
@@sandystewart1331 Thank you. Glad you like them. Let me know if you decide to get one. I make them to order 🙂
@@danesspoons that sounds awesome. Thank you!
I'm rather curious, how do you go about washing it once used in the kitchen?
Just hand wash with normal dish soap and air dry and use again. That's all. Kolrosing lasts as long as the spoon which is many years of use and it can't be washed out.
Well done for going as far as you could , reminds me of where i live here in Wales UK its always raining , still youve got something for another day .
It certainly wasn't a boring day and I still managed to get some work done so all good 🙂
Good job👍 which wood is this spoon? thanks..
This is wild cherry 🍒 It's what I almost always use. My favorite 🙂
This design turned out great thanks for sharing Dane
Thanks. Glad you like it. I'm quite satisfied with this one myself 🙂
Excellent im just gonna start on making spoons ,and you can bet your bottom dollar i will be doing this ,thanks for showing us how you do your spoons , Greetings from Wales UK .
Glad you like the videos. Have fun with making spoons. I must warn you that it can be very addictive once you start 😂
@@danesspoons Just retired so looking forward changing from little figures to spoons ,working with wood is addictive lol .
@@indianatone218 Sure is 🙂
Do you burnish as well?
Yes I do. I use a glass marble. You can see that in the video I kolrose the Dandalion. I forgot to film it here. Though that step is not a must.
Dane I have to be honest and say that the paint doesn't do it for me...
I probably prefer them with kolrosing only myself although some do look really great with color. Some people prefer to have some color so it's good to have options 🙂
I think this is one of your prettiest designs yet. But please don't PAINT the details in... Just the brown and wood.
Glad you like it. I don't paint this design. I only paint some design if a customer prefers it. Some designs (like this one) come as kolrosing only
I LOVED the Dandelion!
Glad you did. Thanks Hope you like the mushrooms too. I do many designs these days 🙂
i wished i can work like you, in the forest without power tools, slowed down and so peaceful, great man !
It can be challenging and the road to here wasn't easy. I probably wouldn't recommend it to everyone. But it seems it's the only way for me to be fulfilled. And the forest has sure been a teacher. It will humble you fast and show you what really matters 🙂 Still, some days I think I just might be a little crazy. Take care my friend and enjoy what you have this moment. Thank you for watching 🙂
Dane that is a beautiful office
Thank you my friend. I can't complain 🙂
Really nice, but I’m surprised that the paint can be applied over the oil. Am I misunderstanding your process?
Usually not but it works with milk paint. I developed the process many years ago. I tested it back then in both versions and it works the same. I also apply another coat of linseed oil on the paint when it dries. Some of my painted spoons have been in use for years now and have held up really nicely. I was surprised when I saw photos of some after years of use. Of course all paint can be chipped with time depending on use. Kolrosing lasts as long as the spoon 🙂
@@danesspoons thanks for the prompt reply…I would not have thought to try that!
This is awesome. Thank you for sharing this with me. It's very special as are dandelions to me❣️Your work is spectacular. I can't wait to receive the pieces and get them to my daughter in law. THANK YOU.
So glad you like it. They should ship tomorrow. Thank you 🙂
your work is absolutely beautiful. 👏
Thank you 🙂
Dane, your kolrosing skills are quite amazing. Those designs are BEAUTIFUL!
Thank you. So glad you like them 🙂
Beautiful work
Thank you 🙂
Very nice!!👍
Thank you 🙂
Have to be a very large lump of butter
It's a normal size. This is not a finished spreader though. After carving and finishing cuts it is just right for spreading. But I do smaller sizes and larger sizes than normal of all my work to those who prefer.
What an incredible Craftsman you are Sir! Subd!
Thank you. So glad you like my work 🙂
What wood did you carve your spoon from? This is so cool! Definitely going to give it a try! Beautiful job!
It's wild cherry 🍒 Thank you 🙂
@@danesspoons cherry is a beautiful wood! Appreciate the reply back, thank you!
@@jwanner4 My favorite 🙂
Beautiful. Question, do you use a traditional long handled kolrosing knife?
I use Mora 106 wood carving knife for all my kolrosing. Never use a dedicated kolrosing knife. Thank you 🙂
@@danesspoons I have a Mora as well. I also have a Nick Westerman kolrosing blade that I need to handle. I just feel that a short handle will be better for me. Kinda like a butt chisel.
@@littleeaglewoodworks Try it out. What ever feels most comfortable 👍
Very nice office!👍
Thanks. I can't complain 🙂
Stunningly beautiful. Thank you for sharing
Glad you like it. It's a beautiful spot and spring so everything is so vibrant and full of life.
I axe out my spoon blanks on a bandsaw. But I prefer your office to mine.
Thanks. Whatever does the job is fine but nice surroundings can sure help 🙂

You could 🙂
Amazing work as usual
Thank you 🙂
Very nice!
Thank you 🙂
Great sounds ❤
Thanks. I find them relaxing, the whole activity slows you down 🙂 Have a look at some of my long videos. Thanks for commenting
Do u ever put them in the oven? Before or after oiling?
Only my baked series but I don't kolrose those. Check out my Instagram @dane.licina for all my work
Great work 😊, what do you use to darken the lines at the end? Was it coffee powder ?
Thank you. Yes, it's finely ground coffee. 🙂
I made a teaspoon because no other spoon I had reached out the top of my long travel mug and I drink a LOT of tea. So I made this spoon. I love my spoon. It's beautiful and I eat my porridge and other soft stuff with it too. Its changed the way I look at 'things'. I get increasingly irritated the more I see plastic stuff stamped with 'Made In China' on it. I want to make me a wooden bowl and a wooden knife and fork and maybe a wooden comb. And some wooden jewellry.
It's great to be able to make something you will use and it's always such a joy to use it. Keep carving 👍
That's beautiful! 😃
Thank you. Glad you like it 🙂
Amazing work my friend. I love the colors.
Thanks. Glad you like the color combo 🙂
Well done!
Thank you 🙂
How do you sharpen your knives, stone or strop?
I use sand papers of various grits. Cheap and very effective with proper tehnique. All my spoons are knife finished so sharp knives are a must.
That is an awesome design especially for a coffee scoop
Thank you 🙂 Glad you like it.
Awesome
Thanks. So glad you liked it 🙂
Really nice spoon! Thanks for the video! 👍
Thanks. Glad you like it 🙂
Another great design and execution ! I recently ordered some knives from ash and axe, and he threw in a free kolrosing knife. It’s got a tiny little blade, very thin. Did my first design with it and was quite happy with the results. I thought it would be too thin and that the coffee wouldn’t take but was surprised that it actually came out ok ! Although I think I do prefer using my normal knife (like you do) … Really need to work on my curved edges. It’s really hard for me to get clean circles, The straight parts are fine but the curved/ circular sections can look a bit janky once the coffee is added.
Glad you like the new design and great to hear more people taking up kolrosing. Curves are always challenging when starting out. With repetition it will get better and easier. Keep at it 👍🙂
