Chris Matthews Fly Fishing
Великобритания
Добавлен 19 июл 2020
I started fly fishing Devons' rivers for trout in the early 1980's aged 9 and have been trying to catch them on and off ever since. Most of this time has been spent on the Upper Teign, various Dartmoor rivers and my local river Yeo ( private section) and four years ago I joined the Crediton Fly Fishing Club to explore the seven different rivers that the club has to offer. The main reason for these videos is to show new or prospective members the fishing the club has to offer with perhaps some guidance on the various techniques, tackle and flies that I use to try and catch the wild brown trout therein, plus advice on where to park, what the access/wading is like and any other general advice that comes to mind. Please feel free to ask any questions in the comments section and I will do my best to answer them or ask another member if I can't.
A closed season pick me up
This is a short session I filmed in late September on the little Dartmoor stream I enjoy so much. I decided to keep this footage to release over the Christmas holiday just in case people want something to remind them of the coming season which will eventually arrive. Merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Does the Lady still live here?
Просмотров 1,8 тыс.Месяц назад
Well, I finally managed to get out after some Grayling on the clubs bit of the Lower Creedy. Alas, I only caught a few out of season trout. Whether the lady of the stream still resides in this stretch is unclear, but without some independent confirmation, I think I'll turn my attention elsewhere.
Fly Fishing the River Taw

I say in the video that I spent 5 hours on the river but actually it was probably more like 7 with an hour for lunch! One of the things about recording yourself is that you can't "un say" things when you utter something stupid (this happens with an annoying regularity). This was definitly a day of two halves with fish rising for the first half an hour, then a real quiet spell, before another ris...
Fly Fishing on Dartmoor (The East Dart)
Просмотров 2,9 тыс.3 месяца назад
This was one of those days that started out rather slowly but picked up in to the afternoon, culminating with me contacting what I think would have been a good trout for Dartmoor, but I mucked it up I've been watching it back on the edit and hoping for a different outcome, but it keeps getting off? Maybe next time? The Upper East Dart is a beautiful stream, and I will definitely return next sea...
Twitching the Nymph
Просмотров 1 тыс.4 месяца назад
Only four and a half weeks of the season left, so even though the conditions weren't great, I had the afternoon off, and it would have been rude not to? I decided that the nymph would give the best chance of actually catching something, and as I've mentioned before, giving the nymph a little twitch can often bring a response from the Trout.
Delightful but difficult

OK, so confession time. I generally carry my rod already set up and just break it down to two sections to fit in the car. However, in my haste to get fishing, I reassembled it with the line looped around the rod and somehow failed to notice for the first hour of the session! The rod still cast, but I did wonder why the line wasn't quite shooting as well as normal? I'm sure the observant amoung ...
Trying the Tups

When I first started fly fishing for wild river trout back in the 1980"s pretty much all my dry fly patterns consisted of tail, body, and hackle in various guises. This was long before I'd heard of parachute flies or emergers or cdc. Most of these patterns came from two books by David J Collyer ( I seem to have appropriated these from my father some time in the past), Fly Dressing, and Fly Dres...
The "Dog Days" of Summer
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.4 месяца назад
I was never entirely sure why they call the hot sultry period of summer the "dog days." Apparently, it's linked to the star Sirius (the dog star), which appears in the sky around the end of July. Certainly, my father and his fishing friends would often talk about it not being worth fishing in the dog days and would switch to coarse or sea species or wait for darkness and go after seatrout. You ...
Fly Fishing on Dartmoor

Graham and I have finally managed to get out on the little Dartmoor stream with it's small but perfect wild brownies. I decided to try some of the old patterns that I used to use on the Teign back in the 1980's which seem to hsve fallen out of favour ( well in my fly box at least). The good old pheasant tail was a favourite of my Dads and actully performed rather well. I might have to tie some ...
Another evening on the Taw July 2024
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.5 месяцев назад
A lovely evening fly fishing the river Taw. This session started off with a bang as I was fortunate enough to land a beautiful 14" fish from the first pool of the beat. After this, the rise sort of petered out, and the fishing became tough as the temperature dropped, and the Taw had the last laugh, defeating my best efforts to finish with a fish before the light made filming impossible. Still v...
The Sherry Spinner

The Blue Winged Olive was once our most common upwinged species here in the West Country, and it's imago the Sherry Spinner provided me with many long summer evening rises, with the surface of the river covered with the typical rings of fish just gently kising the surface. Alas, the BWO has surfered a drastic decline ( along with many other invertebrates} over the past 30 years. It is believed ...
Welcome to the Jungle

I decided to pay a visit to the unfished section of the Creedy and it was soon apparant why nobody fishes here. It really was an almost unfishable jungle, which was very difficult to access (not helped by a now redundant barbed wire fence hidden in the undergrowth). In the end, I gave up and crossed back over to the Yeo where I could at least cast. www.fly-fishing-club.co.uk/
Surprising results on a cold evening

I wanted to try out a new gopro mount to see if it was an improvement on my usual chest mount. The evening was cold and clear with a downstream wind, so not ideal conditions. I barely saw a fly hatch or a fish rise and yet a number of fish were willing to take my Neff caddis dry fly. Let me know in the comments if you noticed any difference in the pov.

Dartmoor fly fishing with a one weight rod
A fascinating and absorbing video, delightfully presented in a gentle manner. Thank you. I know I sound old (probably because I am), but it is a pleasure to watch footage of a fishing trip that isn't marred by overlaid guitar music, where the presenter doesn't have to "high five" a mate after every fish caught and, best of all, the word "awesome" wasn't used once! Seriously, an excellent video, and I look forward to next season’s offerings. Tight lines.
Thanks for watching Christopher. There were three things that I promised myself when I decided to start this youtube lark. No loud music, as I much prefer listening to the sound of the river. No endlessly asking people to subscribe or like the video before they've watched it ? And no mid roll adds ( this took a while to achieve because you have no control over the add placement until you hit 1000 subscribers). It probably doesn't make sense as the videos that include all of the above get far more views, but for me, this is about enjoying the process. It's actually quite good fun👍 Anyway, awesome comment, dude, and high fives 😅
what a lovely bunch of spots Chris, here's to a great 2025. happy new year. at 20:04 was that some sort of hydrophobic powder?
Let's hope the bees have a better spring this year. They came good at the end, but feeding bees in May/June is no good for our business! You're correct, the powder is fumed silica, which was originally supplied as "frogs fanny" from the USA. I bought a large tub of it years ago as it's quite expensive in the little tubs. I did notice in the video that I did a lousy job of facing it downstream as you're not meant to breathe it in. Must try harder next season. Generally, I try to just use kitchen towel, but there are times when the only way to revive the fly is the magic powder. It's surprising how often a fish takes after the treatment. Perhaps the powder gives a bit of sparkle?
"And lo, we behold a magical fairyland that shall be known as Devon!" awesome bit of video, loving the landscape, camera angles and plucky little blighters at the end of the line! Some tricky shots, there, I'd be half a box down on flies after a couple of hours! All the best Chris, good luck for '25 😊👍
Ha ha cheers, Dave, I think you'd do alright looking at the small streams you fish on👍 Dartmoor is a special place to cast a fly. The great thing about wild trout is that they tend to live in beautiful places. Even our more urban rivers are little oasis of nature.
Hi Chris, again a most beautiful landscape where you are fishing 😂 I probably should settle over from germany 😇 Happy New Year and fine fishing, Markus
Happy New Year Marcus, you also have some beautiful chalk streams looking at the videos from Germany 👍
Such pleasurable viewing! You keep on delivering Chris. In anticipation of your next season midst all that 'mellow fruitfulness'. A Happy New year to you from NZ.
Many thanks, Nevile, and a happy new year to you, NZ, still on my bucket list when my numbers come up 👍
Thanks for the lovely Christmas present Chris. Tight lines in 25
Thanks again for posting this Chris. Wishing you all the best for 2025
Many thanks Peter, happy new year, the new season will soon be here 👍
Awesome video man! Thanks for including the snag in the tree lol. I was beginning to think I was the only one that got snagged in trees.
It happens to everyone on these streams 👍 anymore who doesn't get caught in the odd tree isn't casting in the right spots. 🤔
Great video Chris. When you want yo know, winter will be over.
great video Chris just what we need in the depths of winter all the best
Soon be march, thanks Chris for a very enjoyable video, keep them coming . All the best.
Thans for this Chris as with all the videos a welcome watch, roll on March
Wonderful footage Chris, a new subscriber here . Have a great 2025 and roll on the new season. Appetite whetted!!
Many thanks David, lots of videos on the site if you get bored. Some of the earlier ones leave a bit to be desired, but everyone's got to start somewhere 👍
Hope you had a good Christmas and have a happy new year Chris! Love watching mining bees come and go. Some nice little trout! Roll on spring! 🌟
Yes, roll on spring, we will be back out on our streams before you know it 👍
Only roughly 2 months here in Wales and then trout season. I hope we get a good spring this year...... Last two springs uave been CRAP
I hear you, Bob, just a nice "normal " year of weather, please, with no records broken. May is generally the best month for us ( might be later further north), and the last two have been rubbish.
What a delightful video - the perfect fillip on a dull, damp afternoon. I look forward to watching more next year.
Many thanks for watching. Those evenings seem a long way off at the moment, but, eventually, they will return 👍
thanks Chris ... as ever, a pleasure to watch you fishing. Have a very Happy, Healthy and Productive 2025
If you have a river like this or a secluded pond, you just have it all.
Lovely Christmas surprise Chris, stunning scenery, a good outing! All the best when the New Year arrives. How did the Grayling hunt go?
Seasons greetings Davie, I hope to see some more from the Lothrie burn this year 👍 I had three trips out for Grayling, the first one was full of trout, second was cold and windy with just the odd trout and the last trip was a really beautiful late autumn day and I had 4 Grayling 👍 Alas, the floods came afterwards, and that was that. Bank clearing next 👍
Great video can I ask what outfit you use for these streams? 👍
On this tiny stream, i use a 6'6" 2 weight rod but with a 3 weight line on it to load the rod with minimal line out. There is an argument that a longer rod would give more control, but I end up in the trees more when I've tried it. For all my dry fly fishing, I'm a big fan of thread furled leaders. This might be of interest ruclips.net/video/yLx4Hk6WUzY/видео.htmlsi=kTM74_aR0XXuWZ5P
A great day out Chris, wonderful fishing. I hope you have a great New Year and thanks for the new video, most enjoyable.
Cheers, Phillip, and a happy new year to yourself. Well done on the dour Loch 👍 we have some man made lakes around here, but most are stocked fisheries. There is a non stocked reservoir with some wild brownies in it, but the banks are so steep you'd need a boat to fish it, and this isn't allowed. I've had a few fish out of it, but it's hard work compared to the river 👍
Well in my friend. This cheered me up no end .
A very enjoyable surprise post Christmas thank you
@@marktaylor1096 indeed
Great content as usual Chris! Thanks for the surprise. Makes you want to get the gear out for the river. Countdown is on……
I'll be back on the river in a few days' time for our clubs bank "tidying" sessions. Once that starts, you know the new season isn't far away. We might even manage the odd fly tying evening to help pass the time 👍
Just what's needed on a foggy drab day. Love the small waters.
Cheers, Peter, it has been a very grey Christmas. I don't mind the cold, crisp, sunny days, but this weather pattern is just depressing 😕 Roll on spring 👍
I've been looking forward to the Christmas bonus and it didn't disappoint! What a fantastic place to fish. Here's wishing you a very happy New Year Chris and thanks for giving us so much enjoyment in '24.
Many thanks, Mike. I must admit that editing the video has started the "Trout fever," and we still have eleven weeks to go! Roll on 2025 and some Moor fishing 👍
Another great video, thanks Chris. Been rewatching mine as a ‘river fix’! Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas, Robert. I also do a bit of rewatching. If nothing else, it can remind you of certain patterns that you need to tie for the new season.
I look forward to seeing your amazing fishing experiences again next year!
Thanks for watching, it's very much a labour of love for me and I think I'd still video stuff even if nobody watched. It doesn't mean it's not appreciated when people enjoy them 👍 it's human nature I suppose.
That was an unexpected Christmas treat Chris! Memories of summer. A lovely little river. 😊😊
Seasons greetings Fred, it does seem that the most popular videos are always going to be May/June time bit it's nice to give people something to pass the time during the closed season I think? I'm just about to watch the latest offering from Caorach 👍
Thanks Chris, that was a much needed winter pick me up.
You're welcome. It's nice for me to look back aswell, it also gives me an excuse to dissappear from the madness for a few hours to edit the video 👍
Beautiful river, great film Chris, Happy New Year
Yep, it's a beautiful stream. The fish are small, but then, if it was full of two pounders, then I doubt I could afford to fish it 😃
Thanks for posting this Chris, a nice surprise!
Glad you enjoyed it
Happy Christmas. Stunning river, good fishing😊
Great video Chris and a lovely strean, sunny today so I got to fish for grayling but too much flow still so blanked however enjoyed it anyway, look forward to your first spring video. ATB mike
Hi Mike, still nice to be out despite the blank 👍 we start our bank clearing Sunday week which will be a good excuse for a paddle 😆 it will be interesting to see the damage from the storms we've had so far.
Only a few months to go and the Moor will beckon. Thanks for your little slices of trouty beauty
I've promised myself to explore more of the Duchy in 2025, but New Year resolutions don't always pan out ( like last years diet plan).
Cheers Chris, this was a nice surprise and a very enjoyable watch as always! Keep up the great content and a very happy new year from N. Ireland 😎🎣👍
Thanks Ian, just 11 weeks left to wait, I think?
@ Yes, won’t be long now! 1st of March here in NI, at least on the rivers that I fish. Tightlines for 2025 👍
😊🇬🇧👍🍺
Thanks Chris. I've been planning the new season as best as I can for the past week or two, buying a fish finder and an anchor for when I'm out on the kayak, and putting cheap flights and charters to Malaga and Morocco in my basket. It's only a few weeks until I can break the salmon gear out, and only a few after that until the 3wt gets a dusting off. I'm trying not to get impatient, so this was a nice wee surprise to remind me that the river will still be there. Merry Christmas.
Many thanks. Here's hoping 2025 is a bit kinder for you conditions wise 👍 I look forward to a few kayak videos that should be fun.
Happy Christmas and tight lines in new year 👍
Cheers Chris, another great vid about my favourite of all places in England. 👌
Many thanks, Gordon. Dartmoor is a very special place to cast a line. I intend to explore some more of it next season, time permitting as ever.
Chris your videos are the best to watch as your spiel is great - the camera is set to see the cast and strike and the rivers are a nice size - keep up the good work
Thank you, David, very kind . I'm going to edit a video this weekend to release just after Christmas. Hopefully, it will help to brighten up these dark winter days 👍
Good stuff Chris, pretty sure you'll be successful soon enough!
It took some time, Davie, but I did manage a few Grayling before the floods hit. Alas not on our club water but a beautiful stretch of the Lyd. A week later, our streams were in the fields!
Nice upload, some sizeable chub must reside there too?
Thank you Chris for another fine job with the video and a great season. Well done sir. I look forward to re-watching on cold winter days. Cheers!
I think euro nymphing needs more open water - Please anyone advise
I think euronymphing is about fast riffles and pots. Short casts and no line out. Tight line nymphing is a normal light line and rod, and leading the fly downstream.
Hi Chris , love the videos . Im not to sure on smaller rivers that anyone is an expert . Thats my experience . You get a few and raise your hopes then nothing ! I was out Saturday had 2 in the first half hour then nothing all day until last light and a good one bumped me off .
My friend and I tried today, but the frost and cold northerly scuppered our plans. It won't stop me trying for a Grayling this winter, though 👍
Chris,if you didn't already know, Mortimer & Whitehouse gone fishing BBC2 9pm... Grayling on the river Frome
Oh yes, already on series record👍 I've only fished the Frome once, but it was a bit special.
Its the whole package that matters, the circumstances, the emotions, the learning, casting and being close to nature...Thats fly- fishing, and I regret fishing bone fish 2 decenniums ago, it made a transient peak fishing wise and I quit. Lost interest until last year when I discovered a gem of a river nearby, which I never thought held anything but the unhockable fingerlings...at best. Happy to be back into fishing, a bit wiser and much older😂 Thanks for the late autumn visit Chris
It's great to hear you've rediscovered your love of fishing, I had the standard sabbatical of marriage, children, etc. I'm now trying to make up for lost time.......
For every pause you rediscover the joy, new aspects popps up, the experience deepens on a emotional level...❤
Enjoyable viewing as always, looks a great wee river. Good luck in your grayling pursuits.
That was an unexpected treat! Well done by the way for not filming the out of season fish there is far too much of that on YT and it's bad form. 👍👍
Cheers, Fred, this prolonged mild spell will obviously mean it's hard not to catch the oos browns, but there's no way people should be advertising it? I'm determined to get a West Country Grayling this year, but I think I need to look further afield
