Wrong tactics on the river Taw

  • It's all too easy to turn up at the river with a pre concived plan as to your approach and then be a bit lazy when it comes to changing tactics. Here is a classic case of me doing exactly this even though I talk through in the video what I think I should be doing and then completely ignore my own advice. I really should have known better.

    Well done. Its refreshing to see honest video up where anglers admit they struggled, wrong tactic or even blanked. Theres far too much ego on social media these days.

      I think you just have to show it as it is Carl don't you. I could easily chop the video up to make myself look good but I think people would tell it was fake and you'd soon get caught out. Anything happening up your way?

      @@chrismatthewsflyfishing7724 It's very poor on my local river. One tiddler the other day upstream nymph and a tiny seatrout smolt this afternoon while messing about with streamers! The river has dropped but for some reason it's still fairly coloured. Saw a mayfly today so going to leave it couple weeks until fish on them. I'm convinced there's less fish every season.
      I'm going to mainly fish the Dee and mountain lakes for trout this season and get into bass fishing again. Kind of losing the interest for my local small rivers.......I keep looking at the giant wild trout coming out regularly from South Wales rivers and I'm mad with envy!

    • @chrismatthewsflyfishing7724
      @chrismatthewsflyfishing7724  4 месяца назад +1

      Yeah there's some real lunkers in those South Wales rivers, not sure why?? I've just seen more rain coming next week to f#ck the rivers up AGAIN.

      @@chrismatthewsflyfishing7724 I don't know why either. Some North Wales rivers do run through fertile land, but catching a trout of 2 pound would be rare, let alone a 4 pound one. But a lot of the trout do run to the sea to get big.
      Similar to your neck of the woods? In that sense I have caught 4 pound trout, but seatrout. But I prefer the stay at home trouts .....
      Just get out whenever you can over the next week with high pressure in charge.........I will be heading to fish mountain lakes when the shit weather returns.

    Very nice vid as ever, Chris. I'm sure your day will come soon! And those moorland brownies won't be as sulky as these sulky lowland ones!
    After weeks of dredging up the odd fish with streamers and even squirmy wormy (!!!!! Don't tell the Houghton club🤣),
    I finally broke the anti-topwater curse at the end of April, with several quality fish captured after casting to rises, using light nymphs, spiders and dries.
    On the last session I noted several upwinged species, dominated by olives and large brook duns, so insect life is good on at least one river. Rises are still a bit sporadic, but it's improved as the levels settled, no doubt.
    I couldn't help laughing about the utube analytics thing!
    It's better not to look! Ive got mine to about 28% average retention.
    For ages it was about 23%, folks generally have a very poor attention span. Like me, you have a valued core of followers, and It's about pride in the job and keeping them entertained at the end of the day unless you need a living from it. ❤

    I'm grateful that I found your channel (through wildfisher, I think). I enjoy the peaceful feeling, the natural sounds, the attention to the flora and fauna around you, and maybe most of all the good-natured humor and humility found in your videos. I watch other youtube accounts to get tying tips, learn new techniques, etc. I watch your videos to feel like I'm there. Thanks.

    Hi Chris, got to agree with @carlhughes9584. The scenery with the birds singing is great in itself, good fishing or not. I actually fell in the river last week whilst recording! Thought I would keep it in, totally soaked within 5 minutes but planned keeping it on the video to the show the perils of Fly Fishing, I hadn't put my memory card in so that plan was out! Good start to the season up here but strangely not many Brown Trout, mostly Salmon Smolts. Hear's to a good season

    It all looks so lovely with the green coming on the trees and the recent change in the weather has to give us all hope. Another great video and congratulations on the 1000 subscribers, it is great to be able to turn off the mid-roll adverts though RUclips keep changing where the setting is and how you use it in a bid to subvert our attempts to keep their ads out of the middle of fishing videos :-)

      @@chrismatthewsflyfishing7724 Just one day Chris - I managed some fishing on Lewis but it was just so cold that it seemed pointless going to trout so I had a few days chasing a spring salmon. However, I just couldn't ignore the trout totally and so had a day out. It wasn't exactly successful but I did catch a trout and get a good walk so that is a win. Hopefully there'll be a video of the day soon but I'm in bed with covid - there seems to be a lot of it about just now and although we were told it would become just like a cold this current version seems pretty nasty.

    Hi Chris, another lovely video, watched to the end! 😂 I fear many people want to see fish, fish and more fish. I watch to learn about other people’s tactics, flies they use, that sort of thing. Is that a Wychwood R&S 7’6” #3? I have the same one and love it. How do you find that reel-I’ve often looked at it but never been sure.

    • @chrismatthewsflyfishing7724
      @chrismatthewsflyfishing7724  4 месяца назад +1

      Hi Robert, you are absolutely correct re the rod (what a shame they don't make it anymore) I also love it👍 Not sure about the reel, I went for it because its light and just a basic click pawl ( the drag on my other reel keeps moving on its own) but you can't adjust the tension on the drag? Turning the dial like you would on an old rimfly for instance has a very limited effect. The original river and stream reel was over £100 and I payed half that for this new model so perhaps the old adage is correct.
