I have only just seen this, this is my local water. Full credit to you Rhys helping that young lad out and his father! My passion has always been shooting and gundogs, and I have always helped others with less knowledge and experience.
Huge respect to you Rhys for helping that young boy catch his fish and release it back to the water , that memory will forever stay with him and his Dad ..
Have been eagerly waiting for this video at my local water Rhys. Cracking venue albeit very hard fishing at times! You helping that young boy made my day! That’s what fishing is all about! 👌
This was great to see. My father taught me to fish at the age of 6-7yrs old. I still remeber my first brownie on the small streams up behind drwslwyn castle and i also remember hooking my forst "proper big fish" those memories dont leave you. I put my love of fishing totally down to my father teaching me all those years ago. The beauty of it is that i have taught all three of my elder sons and am now in the early stages of teaching my youngest who is the most enthusiastic by far. He is very much like i was....fishing mad. Hes already precision casting on the mepp at 9yrs old. We were out on the Tawe last weekend and although i beat him by 2 fish hes very quickly catching up. Dont believe in giving chances. The rivalry is real😅😅the plan is for him to surpass me just like i blew my old man out of the water. Its a blessing. That lad will never forget that moment. Well done Rhys.
Best fishing drama on RUclips.....I had my heart in my mouth when young Dylan got a second take....you even added more suspense with the dramatic music....masterful! As ever, great tips from a great guy, well done Rhys! 👍
What a gentleman Rhys. I am new to fly fishing and I just love your videos. It’s a predominantly male sport but this does not out me off. Every guy I have met is great. I have had tuition by Twinpeakes in Aberdeenshire and they are just like you, kind and informative.
What a superb film once again Rhys…well done. My friend and I fished Ynys Y Fro last winter with no success and only saw two fish landed all day but you made it look easy. I’m also thinking of teaching my grandson to flyfish and that was a brilliant tutorial on how to explain what the fish will do once it’s hooked. Brilliant stuff as always!
@@RhysFishes That's fine, perhaps a future project. It was great news about your latest addition, congratulations to you and your partner, hopefully, the baby will be a FFB (Future Fishing Buddy)
@@davidhumphreys7035 I've been fly fishing for just over a year and the demographic locally is old men that don't like to share - "Why burn your own spots?". I was terribly disappointed when I realized this. Trying to do different when I can.
@DeeJamz I've never understood that attitude and am quite free with my advice, time and kit when required, i like to think as passing it on as I've had quite a bit of help in long past years from others.
Excellent video again Rhys, informative & great viewing but to give your time to the young lad & his father was the most rewarding. True fly fishing gentleman sir. Tight lines, Derick.
Always learn new things watching your videos like degreasing the leader regularly . Great to see you helping the young lad he will always remember that. Great video as always well done
Some good tuition there Rhys. That said. Your videos are great to watch and very informative. Keep going. We want to see more tricks and methods in fly fishing…
Well done Rhys for sharing your accumulated knowledge and experience with a keen young angler in such a practical / hands on way…now that you’ve helped Dylan by pointing him in the right direction and catching a good fish, my guess is he’ll want to learn more and hopefully become hooked for life and benefit from all the many things that fishing can offer him / young people …and those not so young too😅
Absolutely brilliant with that young lad. I've had 2 fab days on drys with a foam bodied Hawthorn fly on a Welsh upland llyn in N Wales, 6 fish one day and 8 on the other.
Hi Rhys, great video as always! Especially with helping the boy land one. Quick question on the leader for a single dry fly setup. How do you decide between using a tapered leader vs a taper by connecting different leader sizes? Also any tips on when to use co-poly vs fluoro?
You can use either. I didn't have a shop bought tapered leader to hand, so went down the route of making my own. Co-poly is great at keeping the flies high but can cause issues when your trying to get the leader closest to the fly to sink, hence why I tend to just revert to fluoro. Less spools to carry around also.
Rhys that was fantastic ,the fish ,the information BUT BUT BUT the end ov the video with the young lad was class 👌 👏 loved it. Since you've helped him could you help this old codger haha😅 could you tell me what type of hook you tied the size 18 cdc on please. I've never tied that small. Thanks again Rhys....brilliant.
Great video, very helpful and nice to see you helping the boy😁. Question I have is, I have a stillmaniac 10’ 7wt and preferred it with an 8wt line. Did you find this also. And is it the same with the 6wt.
Many fish are lost through striking too soon-wait until the fish turns over and the line moves - I see it all the time with novices and even once a teacher showing kids how to fish. If the fish drops the fly, try a very slow retrieve. Some times they take viciously! So have some spare line. Do not be in a hurry to re-cast. I use 6ft of 12lb of floating leader (Used mostly for carp fishing) this gives a bit of stretch and does not sink in rough weather. For the tip, 6ft of 8lb fluro with a tucked blood knot to hook. (I use 13lb if fishing reserviors).
Great video. Plenty of good tips. The small CDC was definitely the key on that day. Can you point us to a previous video explaining mucin a bit more? We understand it is a floatant in the context of fly lines, but can you explain more please?
I miss a lot of fish on dries due to my poor timing , what method do you use to get it right , my mate says he says to himself , I want a pint of Guinness before striking.
If your not used to casting leaders this long, start shorter. So if we were mirroring my tapered leader, just shorter each piece in half or by a third. Once your comfortable at that length after a while, then add an extra foot onto each leader section etc… until you reach the desired length

Yeah love this Rhys! Helping that young lad was awesome 🙌
Rhys if only there were more people in the world like you, that kid would never forget this day.
Rhys, you should be proud of yourself for helping the young boy out. You’ve got a new fan for life. Brilliant.
Should be more fishermen like you Rhys, that was great to see

Top job if we were lucky had someone more experience help and guide us on our angling journey and giving back is so important for the future
That's awesome mate. They two will remember that forever.

Great how you helped Dylan, have you considered doing a kids series, starting with a novice like Dylan and training them up?
its a good idea. However with a new baby arrived, my time is becoming more and more limited sadly.

Hi Rhys, just wondering what floating line you use? You mentioned it but I can’t quite interpret the accent! Lol
I currently use a snowbee xs
Good day what agood turn you did for that young boy hopefully will give him encouragement to go fishing with his dad just like yourself

great and informative video. I did not realise you had to sink your leader when fishing dries but in hindsight it seems so obvious :O.

hopefully not Geoff!
I miss a lot of fish on dries due to my poor timing , what method do you use to get it right , my mate says he says to himself , I want a pint of Guinness before striking.
Love that! Never heard it before but if it works for him, great! Usually a 2 count is enough before striking
any advice on how to handle a 20 foot leader?
If your not used to casting leaders this long, start shorter. So if we were mirroring my tapered leader, just shorter each piece in half or by a third. Once your comfortable at that length after a while, then add an extra foot onto each leader section etc… until you reach the desired length
