  • After one of the wettest winters on record I finally made it out today to start the 2024 season. The fishing was a bit quiet but I did see one fish rise (although I was unable to tempt it to take) and it was great to be back on the river. Casting needs a bit of practice though.

    Great to have you back Chris. Lovely video and a couple of trout even. Very nice start. Freezing spring in Estonia too. It even snowed today, which as it melts will send the river temps back towards zero. Goodness knows what will happen with our hatches this season.

      Yes, you do wonder what effect this will have on the invertebrates. We had a sparse year last season, and I can't see this one being much better, but you never know. Perhaps they will all come at once in a mega hatch.

    Greetings from Down Under Chris. Nice to see you back out on the river again. Autumn here now and our rivers flushed with some good rains. The fishing has been quite wonderful this season. I tend to fish the smaller streams now for wild brown trout, can't beat it in my opinion.
    Anyhow good luck with the season ahead....

    And now I feel my season has propertly started. Thank Chis. Also agree on the casing, I quite often aware that my approach isnt the one best suited to the conditions but casting is so therapeutic when I get into a groove, incredibly frustrating, when I'm not

      I think the older I get, the more I appreciate fishing the way I want to, and not necessarily the best for fish catching. When I was younger, it was all about catch catch catch , but I must have mellowed.

      It's certainly been a long wait this year. I had a day of Grayling fishing booked for the entire winter season and never got out! The bluebells are out in my local wood, and the moorland stream is normally 3 weeks later, I try to time my first visit to see them. Who knows, this year, though, as back to cold and wet next weekend ☹️

    Great to see you out at last Chris. I still have not been out because, basically, it's still winter. Was thinking I might give it a go this afternoon, or perhaps tomorrow. It's still bloody freezing, but at least the wind has dropped for now and the river level has dropped! I can't believe how green everything looks down your way - trees with leaves and it's only late April. 😁 Well done getting a few fish anyway!

    • @jim22222
      @jim22222 4 месяца назад

      Catching fish is secondary. Like to use a nymph from time to time, but not the tight line Euro styles! Fly fishing is perfect for the soul; why make it competitive…..saying that, when on Corrib for the Mayfly with the brothers, sadly Dad is no longer around, we used to say a pound for the first fish, and a pound for the biggest. Not a competition, just a bit of fun!

    Nice start, Chris, don't worry about wooly casting, mines no better than that all season 😂
    We always expect a little too much in the early days. It seemed to be improving on my stream last time, I haven't quite gone full on into euro nymphing yet. The fly line is still on the spool!

      @chrismatthewsflyfishing7724  4 месяца назад +1

      I used to fish upstream nymph and watch the leader for takes, but it does seem to have fallen out of favour? Maybe it's linked to eyesight decline or, more likely, just plain laziness on my part😃 I keep promising myself to try some upstream spider fishing but somehow never get around to it? Funny, isn't it how we all get a bit stuck in our own personal rut tactics wise.
      All the best for the new season👍

    • @soultrader57fishingandmusi25
      @soultrader57fishingandmusi25 4 месяца назад +1

      Well done on the 1k, btw😊
      I've only seen 1 other utuber who still practices upstream nymph, Oliver Kite style. I've tried indicators, and they're no help whatsoever to me. Just grease up and concentrate on the fly line tip, maybe its easier on a small stream?? But to me it just seems to have been erased from the manual.
      From the tackle trades view, I suppose its better if u need a complete new set of kit instead of simply snipping the dry fly off and replacing it with a nymph 😂

    • @chrismatthewsflyfishing7724
      @chrismatthewsflyfishing7724  4 месяца назад

      Congratulations back to you Dave apparently only about 9% of youtube channels make it to 1000 subs so a metaphorical pat on the back for us👍
      I think your probably right about the tackle trade wanting to sell us more kit! I fell for it!

      @chrismatthewsflyfishing7724  4 месяца назад

      Yes, of course, it's a hero 10 set to 4k 60 fps and super view. The bit rate is high, and iso min = 100 and max= 800. Erm, what else, stabilisation set to boost. Maybe if I've missed something, let me know.
      The main issue i had was the audio. Now i leave the windslayer foam thing on constantly and ser the audio to stereo only or wind off? The automatic wind setting is rubbish, and it ends up constantly searching for the best mic, which just sounds weird to me. Hope this helps. Oh, colour= natural.,
