Business tips, life lessons, how to's and vlogs from an accidental Gen X entrepreneur with ADHD!
Hi, I'm Bev, welcome to my channel where I share everything I've learned about running a business as a Gen X woman with late diagnosed ADHD who became an 'accidental entrepreneur' at the age of 52 - smack bang in the middle of perimenopause!
Despite all that, I somehow managed to figure out how to build a successful training business working with amazing corporate clients. I also became a published author and even got to stand on the TEDx stage!

Join me as I open up about what it’s really like to navigate life with late-diagnosed ADHD. This is my journey, raw and unscripted, as I embrace who I really am after years of hiding behind a mask.

How to Overcome the Fear of Getting Seen [The Spotlight Effect]
Some pretty daunting decisions (work) and some pretty obvious ones. The high heels for instance. Never understood why women keep torturing themselves with those.
Better name: Selective Interest driven Attention Disorder
So close! Awesome Bev, keep it up
Thank you. 🙏
Bev! I'm so excited to see you on the precipice of 1k! Didn't you just hit 900? Congrats!
I did yes. Just 2 days ago. I’m just 9 away now eek!!! Thanks Wayne 🙏
Quit my nhs job, decided to only look after people who generally also looked after me too. Stopped buying clothes. Only work part time in a rewarding job. I’m 53 and very happy 😊❤
Love this ❤️
I quit masterbating on the bus and menstruating ....
Thank you .❤
New subscriber!! Saw you on Tracey’s channel. I was very fortunate, as I only had to deal with some hot flashes, which I used HRT for. I feel bad for all the women who have so much more to deal with. Thank you!
Hi Kathy. Yes it’s can be pretty hard but HRT is so effective for many women. I hope you enjoyed the live with Tracey. I always love chatting with her. X
And now you only need 12 :)
Ahh thanks Lynn 🙏🙏❤️
Hi Bev, my family is addicted to tea! Hard to get out of bed without knowing there's a cuppa coming. I need caffeine to get going in the morning. But I can't have a lot of caffeine after midday otherwise I get heart palpitations in bed and can't sleep. Over the years I have regularly consumed caffeine in cola (diet coke got me through uni), tea, coffee and chocolate. The tricky thing is I get headaches with not enough and also too much, lol. The other important thing is that there is way more caffeine in coffee than tea. Recently, I heard that caffeine is thought to keep the dopamine around, so good to get your dopamine levels up first before having too much caffeine. The caffeine then keeps that dopamine around so you feel good for longer after some stimulation. Thanks very much for discussing this and keep going with your 30 days 🤩
That’s interesting I didn’t know that. X
Sooo relatable - thanks for sharing your experiences - makes me feel a lot less alone in my ADHD brain.
You’re welcome. That’s how I feel when I hear other people’s experiences. 🙏🩵
Congratulations, Bev!!!
Thank you x
Beautiful, and right there with you. Got my first gray hair at 18.❤
I embraced my grey hair at age 43, 24 years ago. Your hair looks lovely.
Thank you x
I have ADHD, Combined Type, clinically diagnosed almost 3 years ago at age 46. Caffeine and stimulants (I’m prescribed Adderall) actually both calm me down considerably. I rarely remembered to take the Adderall and I just decided recently to stop taking it altogether due to a heart condition I have but it was a tough decision because it was life changing for me. I drink coffee before I go to bed because it helps me relax. I have been a huge coffee drinker for over 30 years because of the calming effects it has on me.
I’m loving hearing that so many others are the same. People have looked at me really odd when I’ve said I can drink strong coffee before bed and not be buzzing x
When my son was in the 2nd grade his teacher told me that soda pop had the opposite effect on kids who had ADHD. Blew my mind at the time. Working for 31 years in accounting, I drank coffee like I maze well stick an IV in my arm. It kept me calm😂 I would also trip out when people said caffeine affected their sleep and couldn’t have a cup of coffee past 2 pm. So as you can imagine…I’m still trying to figure this out. The more I learn from you the more I’m convinced I’m wired differently. Maybe it is personal to each person and their make up. I don’t see that coffee amps me up or makes it to where I can’t sleep so this makes total sense to me. Your walk really is beautiful.
It is mind blowing when you realise the advice might be wrong and you’re not weird 🤣🤣🤣
@@Lifeinthewyldewest I have a my before bed soda!
@@SimplyKatieWalks lol! Look at us go!
I was a drug addict for years. (14 years sober) i just wanted my brain to stop going. That being said, i love my diet soda. Great video ❤❤
That’s a great achievement. And I get the need to want the brain to stop ❤️
So, next you quit sugar, carbohydrates and seed oils? Right? Now that would bring change, for the better. Checkout Dr Ken Berry or Dr. Chaffee.
Let me know your experience with caffeine - did it help your ADHD or make it worse?
I cannot commit to 30 days because I am a caregiver. But I will find a healthy balance for me and my channel.
That sounds very sensible x
I relate 100%. I was also severely mentally and physically abused by my mother and also my brother. I'm 58, undiagnosed but believe I absolutely have ADHD. I've got abuse CPTSD. Life's been hell on earth. I never married, no help, no love, very few friends. I'm glad that life's short.
I’m so sorry you had to endure all of that. 🥲🩵
@@BevThorogood Thank you.💛
For me and my ADHD brain, I have created a morning routine for my health and its made me super organised. so its been really good for my life
I’ve tried so many different morning routines but they feel so restrictive. Hopefully one day I’ll find something that works. So glad you found your thing 🩵☺️
I very recently determined that I have ADHD (I’m 56) and one of the traits that makes me certain of this self diagnosis is that I cannot allow myself to sleep until I’ve enjoyed my coveted “me time” downtime at the end of the day. Especially if I’ve had a tough day, I’m going to scroll RUclips or binge watch TV for hours to experience the joy (aka dopamine hit!) that I’m desperately craving. And then I am much worse off the next day from lack of sleep. It feels like an endless cycle that I have no idea yet how to change even part of the time, so I feel for you! ❤️
It’s a challenge for sure. Thank you for taking time to leave a comment 🙏❤️
I think your hair looks great Bev. I put temporary burgundy colour in my hair in my late teens/early twenties but have since left it natural. I’m now 60 and my copper red hair is now strawberry blonde and getting paler and will turn white eventually. I’m quite looking forward to that! 😁
Thank you 🙏
Well done Bev. Let’s hope the numbers keep growing! ❤
Thank you Kathy 🙏
It’s a delicate and challenging balance between work, home, and health. I have made health my top priority because I had no choice. Health care is self care. Most days, I exercise for 30 minutes as soon as I wake up, even if it’s just a walk. I have found that for me, when I watch tv or videos before bed , I don’t sleep as well. I try to eliminate screen time at least an hour before bed and I get better sleep on those nights. I turn to a creative outlet like painting or crafting and set a timer if I need to before bed.
Love this I’m 40 and have 1. Gone part time. 2. Cut costs cook from scratch, use flasks of coffee etc. 3. Been on a news diet. 4. Spend time in nature every day. 5. Have time for lots of hobbies and spending lots of time with my son and husband. 6. Do lots of free online courses and RUclips classes to help with personal development and spiritual growth.7Joined lots of groups that are into things I’m interested in. 8. Joined my local spa Literally loving life I don’t get involved in work politics or clicky groups, I don’t do extra work for free, I don’t donate to the endless work baby showers, leaving doos, sponsorships for marathons etc might sound mean but it was costing me a fortune. I don’t get guilt tripped into constantly swapping shifts doing extras. It’s so freeing
Yes!!! I cannot tell you how much I love this comment ❤️❤️👏👏
@@BevThorogoodthanks It’s an awakening I have relatives and friends that spend time stressing over spending probably years in total if you add it up dusting ornaments that they’ve grown the sick of the site of ,ironing bed linen, polishing brasses when they have a gas fire, people pleasing folks that will never be pleased. If you’re not enjoying those things don’t do them, declutter, let go of the stuff and people who drag you down. Put energy and time into people and activities that does fulfill you and has purpose life is for living
@Purplelemon5033 💯. Life is way too short to iron socks ❤️
Oh that is sooooooo wonderful darling ! Congratulations!!!!
Thank you Imi x
❤
Oh Bev. How can I relate to this. I’ve had similar nights as you. I know all I “should” be doing too and it’s a domino effect isn’t? The eating, the exercising blah blah blah and yes blah blah blah. That’s how I feel. Blah blah blah and listening to you I nod my head lots. I think it’s awesome you will be seeking a coach for ADHD. Often all I want to feel is peace and I’m not sure I’ve felt that before. Do you ever feel like you just want to feel at peace? Sending so much love
I absolutely do. Especially some brain peace! My head never stops and it gets intrusive x
This hits so close to home - I struggle to sleep every night and then I work and by my weekend all I want to do is sleep - I have done the binge watching so many times and kick myself the next day - the connection of sleep and health is a sticky one - don't know which came first
I’m sorry to hear you struggle too but it’s actually really nice to know I’m not alone in this x
I'm with you Bev on not liking being in large gatherings & trying to make small talk, I gave up going out drinking in my early 20's.I tend to be a bit social-phobic. Not for me I'm afraid. I've never been one for high heels
Haha maybe that’s one to give a try 👠👠
Hello Bev, nice to come across your channel as I like to watch smaller channels of older RUclipsrs like myself. I completed the 30 Day Challenge on Saturday & yes it was a lot of pressure to keep up with the commitment of uploading every single day. It did help my on camera confidence as I always felt quite awkward talking to a camera, especially out in public. My work schedule added to the time constraints I was under. I need to get stricter on myself about evening snacking too. I've lost some weight but still need to lose more. Enjoyed your video & what a lovely area that you're walking around in. I've Subscribed to your channel to watch more of your content. Greeting from Tasmania, kind regards, Tony.
Hi Toni. Congrats on completing the challenge! I’ll check out your channel. Thanks for your kind comments and great to meet you 😊
Wow! That’s amazing! Congrats 🎉
Thank you 🙏 🩵
Still no idea if I have ADHD, but hell this sounds like me too. Also I have terrible nightmares most nights, which makes me wake up feeling that I didn't sleep when I did too
Ooh the nightmares sound awful. I don’t get those thankfully. Xx
100% it’s great to be the person who asks the “stupid” question, because I guarantee most of the time you aren’t the only one thinking it. Not only will other people be relieved, but sometime it opens up a new area of discussion/train of thought
That’s certainly been my experience too.
Well done Bev! As I see this you're at 937. Really starting to take off
I think the Skool group has played a big part today. But yes it feels like a bit of movement finally happening 🙏☺️
@@BevThorogood Yes, new connections, building that community :)
Such a wonderful video. I’m 26 and totally feel you on some of these points too! You are a gorgeous person 🫶
That’s a beautiful comment. Thank you so much ☺️ 🙏
I have adhd. I cannot shut my brain off at night. I take prescribed sleep meds or i would not sleep. BUT... Ive found out the obvious, if i get 10,000 steps in each day, i can sleep without meds. My goal is less meds or no meds over time ❤
Weirdly yesterday was the first day in ages I got over the 10k steps and did aquafit and still couldn’t sleep 😴
@@BevThorogood have you tried melatonin? It's over the counter
@@SimplyKatieWalks no. I might look into that. The challenge is going to bed more than getting to sleep to be honest x
Lovely video.. I am approaching 50 in the next couple of years and this gives me great faith it will be a great era!
It’s definitely been the best so far for me. It’s all about attitude too I think so you’ll have a great time 😊
I worked until 66. Really happy to be retired at 74.
I hit your living It to the full ❤️☺️
Well deserved Bev , just the first 900 of many more ! Xx❤
Thank you Louise x
Go, Bev, GO! I'm so happy for you. Thanks for sharing this so we can celebrate with you.
