How to Install a Jeep 258 Cylinder Head and Gasket - Part 1
Просмотров 9 тыс.3 года назад
As you may recall from a previous episode, the YJ had some oil burning issues. Jim disassembled the head and took it to a mchine shop where it was found to have some rust pitted valve stems and valve guides that were serverly worn (and PREVIOUS machine shop did not bother to correct in 2012 when engine was rebuilt) Anyway, watch Jim reinstall the cylinder head and head gasket.

How to do a Compression and Leak Down test on your engine
Просмотров 4,3 тыс.3 года назад
Jim describes and demonstrates how to perform a compression and a leak down test on your engine. This is invaluable information to have to determine the overall health of your engine. The Leak Down tester has a 14mm spark plug adapter, however, you will need a "long thread" 14mmx1.25 adapter as the one in the kit is too short to reach the 258 or 4.0L spark plug hole threads. Here are the kits I...

Replacing the Propeller Drive Shaft on a Jeep WJ
Do you have a link? For the part?
Search for 5014212AA RU1061 CR160 at Amazon, or Rock Auto.
I just tried to replace mine with a junkyard and once i got 60 mph it had so much vibration i took it off once i got to work. This is just a bolt back in proccess right? I dont need. New yoke at the transfer case?
No, the flange at the transfer case accepts the flange on the drive shaft. This one replaced in the video was an eBay special and failed after two years. Junk yard ones are also probably well worn. I ended up replacing it with one off of Amazon from USA Standard Gear and it seems like very good quality. So far, so good.
VERY helpful to this new YJ owner!
Thanks! Enjoy your Jeep life!
Great video, thanks for sharing been wondering what lbs torque to apply on the sway bar bolts
Frrame mounting bolts, 30 ft/lbs. Link connections 45 ft/lbs.
Nice vid. I have a 95 YJ and when turning I am getting an awful noise, almost like 'metal on metal' and it seems to be getting WORSE. This vehicle has a new rebuilt...2 years ago. Mileage is 132,000 and mostly in Tucson, Az. area....initially purchased in Pennsylvania by original owner. Everything is original. Question is, HOW DO I KNOW IF I NEED NEW BALL JOINTS? Not a mechanic....DIYer. Thank you, Chris.
Tjats for your question. Ball joints could squeak when turning. My bet would be one of the following though: axle drive shaft u-joints, tie rod ends, or yes, possibly the ball joints. If it came from Pennsylvania, I would suggest that salt from winter driving has made components very rusty. I would disassemble the front suspension and repair replace worn parts. It sounds difficult, but its really not. Best bet might be to join a local jeep club and find someone willing to help you out.
Many thanks for the replay!
thanks for the REPLY, NOT REPLAY!
I have an 2003, and i don't feel any blow at any speed. Why? Is it same problem then?
This is either a bad switch, no power toncircuit (check fuse), or the blower motor itself has failed.
@@jimsjeeps9782 i hear different sound on the fan/speed, but i don't feel from the ventilation or how to explain. And it doesen't matter if i pick window, feet or face.
Which kit did you use for the gasket and filter??
WIX 58707 is the kit I used.
Did you seal it with some gasket adhesive or just put it on and screwed it in?
My 06 tj transmission looks totally different, and it used t25 bolts for the filter so i stripped them a little using t20, all good tho! Its driving good now! Thank you :)
Yes, you probably have a newer trans. This is an older 3speed auto. Pretty bulletproof. The process is pretty much the same to drop trans pan and change fluid filter. Thanks for the comment!
@jimsjeeps9782 do you guys have a link to the kit? or do I just get it off autozone??
Good job venting the non condensable from the center line. Now what about the low pressure charge line too?
My jeep wrangler ac stop working I need help
Go through and see if this video helps. If the compressor failed, then you need a new one. Check fuses too.
great video
Thanks!
Rebuilding my 231. This seal has given me tons of problems. Stopped my whole build in its tracks. I'm worried about breaking the housing... Thank you!
It may be rtv'ed in from the factory... Go slow and possibly drill a small hole in the old seal and use a sheet metal screw to grab into it and yank in out... don't try to pry in the case...or yes, you could damage it...
Thank you!
You're welcome! Hope it helped!
Yeah I’ll keep on using a regular drill bit.
Hi, I have a 2001 Sahara TJ 3speed automatic and gears having issue changing from 2 to 3... My mechanic said I should be using ATF2!! and not ATF4... I am no mechanic but accourding to your great video and forums, all suggest using ATF4.. what must I do? Please help
ATF+4 ...absolutley! Change filter, and as you do that inspect the pad and magnet carefully. Sad to say you might have a bad 2-3 pack issue. You might try to adjust the bands too, but I'd leave that to a professional trans shop. I will say the auto trans in these Jeeps are pretty bulletproof. Let me know how it turns ou!
@@jimsjeeps9782thanks for the reply Jim! I hope it won’t cost an arm and a leg 🤞
You need to change mechanics because your current one doesn't know about Jeeps.
could you link the kit you purchased?

I have a 1989TK body I’m guessing why Jay and I’m six it was running fine. Went to crank it up the next morning and it’s not cold outside and the same as the orange Jeep you’re working on I had a backfire out of the carburetor, had to blow the fire out not sure what’s going on. Please help.
Probably a stuck float in the carb. Did it run ok after that? I would check the ignition system too. If it ran fine before, then it could be bad distributor or plug wires. The fact that it had enough fuel to catch fire tells me it has gotten too much fuel... most likely a stuck float in carburetor.
Drum brakes = POS system designed by idiots.
Agree... but, it's what we have...
Thanks for doing this about change the trans fluid and filter and this video was spot on.
Thanks. More videos coming soon. It's been a while and I am getting ready to get back at it!
@@jimsjeeps9782 had a broken heli coil on one of the bolt holes did not do it so shimmed the bolt with a piece of wire no leaks. Got it marked so can get it fixed need fluid change. Video helped alot.
Hey Jim, how did you shut the fuel off? I’m about to do this on my 4.0 258, CJ7. I think I have a blown head gasket, your other vid was super helpful on that. I want to do the compression and leak down test before I pull the head incase I’m leaking past the rings. Thanks brother!
On the fuel injection, pull the pump relay (under hood fuse block). For the 4.2 248, pull the fuel line from tank at the mechanical pump... let engine start until fuel runs out of carb bowl... to be sure it won't start on fumes, after it cuts off, pull coil wire.
How many hours would this take for a first timer, assuming he’s handy 🤠
It looks intimidating, but just go slow. It's not really that difficult. I'd say 2-3 hours if all goes smoothly. Biggest issue is to make sure to torque in proper sequence...same for intake/exhausr manifold. Good luck!!
u jack it up under the pumpkin? any risks damaging that?
No. Maybe not the best practice, but has not hurt anything so far in 30 years...
My 87 has a different seal. Its slightley larger without that gold cone and having lots of trouble finding one. Thanks for video
You are welcome... The '87 if I recall correctly was 1) First model year, and 2) Transition from Jeep/AMC to Chrysler/Renault... It should still be a Dana 30 though..... I'll see what I can find out.
You are correct. I thought the same thing with the conversion from Amc to Chrysler. I got a couple seals coming. I dont know it the crown 83500199 is the correct one or not. Thanks for your help
Great video thanks!
You are welcome! Thanks for watching.
Hi Jim... replacing the shocks on my 99 TJ has been an experience! Thanks for the great video... Subscribed. 👍🏾 🇺🇸
Thanks! and you are welcome!!
Wish it was that easy to remove the nuckle from the ball joints… i tried really hard but it is as if it’s welded to the ball joints . I’ll probably crack the nuckle and buy a new one… Tried with BJ puller , nothing worked …
I have made the mistake of pushing the wrong way... make sure direction of push is correct. They are a tight fit, but should eventually move....
I managed to remove the knuckle on the passenger side where both ball joints were shot, the top one really badly it’s rod moving up/down…Will press new BJ in tomorrow.. Thanks for posting this info.. @@jimsjeeps9782
Thanks for actually putting the correct torques, saves me time
Thanks. Good luck with it.
Thank you so much. It was a super easy fix. I really appreciate you taking the time to make this video.
Great! Glad it helped you out.
Are there torque specs by any chance i know i can look it up but figured id ask
24ft/lbs on the flange bolts and 15-30ft/lbs on the ujoint strap bolts.
@@jimsjeeps9782 ok awesome thank you i wound up looking it up. But i couldn’t find an exact answer for the one with a u joint and cv joint. Thats the flange correct
Great content although I will say it hurts my heart to see that CJ in the background with ladders and boxes piled on top of it.
Agree! That is a 1984 CJ7 that will eventually be rebuilt. Frame is gone. Bought it mostly for the VIN... It WILL see the outdoors again soon... Until then, yes, unfortunately it is a garage catch-all. 😀
Hello sir. Thank you for making this kind os video. I recently bought a 1991 Jeep Wrangler that has worn-out bushings. My question is where do I purchase those bushings? I've looked on Amazon but I am not sure if the parts match my Jeep.
Ivan, go to Rock Auto and search there. They have great name brand parts for a good price. Also, a local part store should be able to help too. I personally like NAPA and Advance Auto. You will pay a little more at these retail places, but sometimes they have stuff in stock. Let me know how it works out!
@jimsjeeps9782 Thank you so much! I will check it out:)
Hi Jim, I'm Hervé from France. I own a TJ also. I got the same issue with one rear shock absorber that I had replaced the year before and after only 1000 miles !! It was a Gabriel brand, by chance I could buy a new single one same brand to Rockauto.
Hello France and Herve! Yes, you can simply replace the ine shock. Because these are "coil over axle" suspensions, the shock merely dampens the bounce. So, yes, all things considered, you can replace just one. If the others are worn, replace them though or you will get a bouncy ride and bad tire wear. Hope this helps! Cheers!
Thanks Jim! Wasn’t sure if I should use silicone as well, but you answered my question.
Most gaskets don't need RTV. Not sure why everyone thinks that... I've seen some real crazy applications!
@@jimsjeeps9782 probably because the valve cover gasket, and oil pan gasket on these appreciate a little bit in certain spots. Thanks again
Yeah Jim, I have the same issue. Blinkers work until you put on the head lights? Emergency flashers ok though.
Yep...very common problem...not too hard to fix 99% chance it's the ground.
Fun fact, our Jeep manuals indicate that its best to keep your AC system on the auto setting, if you have that as an option.
Good info Thanks!
@@jimsjeeps9782 Thanks for the great video! 🍻
Great video, thank you.
Great video. Inspired me to tackle my 2000 Jeep TJ.
It really does make a difference. Let us know how it went!

This is not for every 2004 don't get confused people
Agree. It's only the manual HVAC controls. Automatic climate control is different.
Change your sway bar bushings, go with a rock jock
Hi, thanks for the video. I have an 04 and was having the exact same sounds. About to put the rebuilt DS back in tomorrow. can you tell me the torque specs you used on the cv ? thanks again
24 ft lbs.
track bar if you have leif springs shoud be removed bad ''eng mistake the schackles track, the bar fights tracking danger and part ware. US congress mandate from US congress ignorance. coil springs ok to have track bar .
Good info.
Did you not bench bleed it?
No. With a power bleeder, it was not necessary. The vacuum formed by pulling the fluid through will also pull the air out. Of course if you don't have a tool like that, a full bench bleed is a must.
Good Job !! I watched this and it helped in changing my 199 TJ at 232K miles.😃
Great! Glad it helped. Happy Jeeping!
I saw ur post i have 309k miles
Good time to bite the bullet and outboard them.
Agree. Anything would be better. Just seems like they were late for.lunch when this was designed.
Try $135.
Wow...
I went on Rock Auto and got it for $13 shipping included
So i just changed my solenoid pack in the trans but i cant seem to find the info on how much fluid to fill it back up with after dropping the pan other then you saying 3-4? Quarts?
I believe it's 4 qts for a pan drop. There is much more in torque converter. Put in a little over 3qts and check level (vehicle running, in neutral, emergency brake set). Add until just below full on dipstick. Trans fluid will expand slightly at temperature, so try to take that into account.
Thx.... great video.
Thanks for the video! Mines a 2004 too. Sounds like you need a new starter too. Mine died recently. I'd recommend not ordering it from Amazon, they kept sending me ones for the wrong engine.
I bumped the key and released it too quick. At this point, I believe the starter is still ok. But hey, maybe next video! Thanks for watching!
@@jimsjeeps9782 yeah I was actually referring to the long crank time the second try. Mine kept taking longer and longer to turn over until one day it didn't. Just something to keep an eye on. Cheers
Check for your green washers in the gauges if you take it off like that ? I open my round know to the left , which is releasing the valve stem that holds the pressure , then snap them off , my green gauge coupler oring popped out one time I forgot to screw it out .now I got two sets of gauges , still ain't found that oring..
Good advice. I did have a green o-ring become dislodged.
