Good work Jim. Replaced all my shocks this summer and broke 3 outta 4 upper rear shock mount bolts and had to cut the lower front mount bolts due to rust. Wasn’t a terrible job but now everything is coated in anti seize. 😅
I like anti-sieze, but if not careful, it gets everywhere! I was lucky on my TJ. The shocks I took off were only about 4 years old. Good news is that Rock Auto swapped them out under lifetime warranty. Thanks for checking in!
Hi Jim, I'm Hervé from France. I own a TJ also. I got the same issue with one rear shock absorber that I had replaced the year before and after only 1000 miles !! It was a Gabriel brand, by chance I could buy a new single one same brand to Rockauto.
Hello France and Herve! Yes, you can simply replace the ine shock. Because these are "coil over axle" suspensions, the shock merely dampens the bounce. So, yes, all things considered, you can replace just one. If the others are worn, replace them though or you will get a bouncy ride and bad tire wear. Hope this helps! Cheers!
Not sure. It could be that the rubber insert in the top of the shock degrades allowing the separation. I'm just glad the noise is gone! Thanks for checking in!
I am getting ready to do this in my TJ. It seems like not just a bad design on Chrysler's part, but a last minute bodge job at the factory. WtF was Chrysler thinking?!
Yes, it's a bad design. It works, but not the best. Some kind of shock tower plate/bracket on the frame would have been better since its a coil suspension. Oh well. Good luck!
Hi Jim... replacing the shocks on my 99 TJ has been an experience! Thanks for the great video...

Thanks Jim, my YJ has a clunk in the rear suspension. I will look at it tomorrow and see if it is the same problem.
YJs are a little different... but could still be same kind of issue. YJ rear shocks attach on the front side and angle towards front of vehicle.

Just had the same exact thing happen on my 2001 TJ. Mine was also the left rear. Is there a factory design flaw in the shock angle?
Not sure. It could be that the rubber insert in the top of the shock degrades allowing the separation. I'm just glad the noise is gone! Thanks for checking in!

Que suene ése Mariachi 👍
Good time to bite the bullet and outboard them.
Agree. Anything would be better. Just seems like they were late for.lunch when this was designed.
