Stop Missing Shots, Be More Mobile (Nikon Z8)
Thank you Sam ! Great demonstration of all the different techniques :D Really shows how skilful you are in capturing near perfect photos and only having to do subtle edits to slightly boost the pictures !
So glad you liked it! I’m by no means nailing it in camera haha, but that’s very kind. I did basic adjustments before showing masks. I really appreciate your support 😊
Do you film your video elements with the 16-80 or mostly just the stills? And I would love to see more about photo stitching. I have the Viltrox 13mm for my Fujifilm, but like you said, you don't always have the time to switch the lens before the moment passes.
Hey! For the Fuji, I'm doing the vast majority of my photo and video work with the 16-80mm. In fact, the X-T5 has turned into my RUclips camera for the most part, so most of my clips are taken with that (other than my talking head stuff). It seems to work well to run around with the fuji as the vid cam, and my Nikon shooting stills, but I still take plenty of photos with the 16-80mm. I'll definitely make a video about photo stitching; seems to be an interest for several people. Just trying to work out how to actually make it, and how to make it interesting haha. Cheers!
these videos are actually great. I feel like you touch on a lot topics/ideas that are often cast aside.
Ah man that means a ton. Cheers and thanks for watching. I’m always trying to balance my own ideas with some of the more general stuff that people want/ask for. I’m glad my voice is coming through 🤙🏻
loving your content
Stoked to hear it! Thanks for watching 😊
im so glad i found your channel keep up the good work man
Glad you found it too! I really appreciate the support 🤙🏻
I have a Sony A7IV and finally got my X100VI at the end of August. Fell in love with the X100 and now I’m planning on selling my Sony and using the X100VI for maybe a year or so and see how I feel then. But likely going to invest in the Fujifilm ecosystem. If the X-T6 is out by then I’ll probably grab that. Sony cameras are good but never really loved them. The X100VI is my favorite camera I’ve ever used.
Epic plan! I would absolutely love to use the x100VI. Don’t have the money now, but eventually I’ll make it happen. Fuji has that character in use and result that is so beautiful. Sony is technically brilliant but never very inspiring (for me)
@@SamBugasExactly how I feel. That new version of the 16-55mm looks like it would pair perfectly with the X-T5 as well 👀
Excellent photographs and lessons. You have a new subscriber
So glad you’re here and I really appreciate the support. Much more to come!
sweet intro! Love the sound design
Thanks man! Was a fun one to cut together
Which lenses do u use/ would you recommend with the x-t5?
Hey! I currently only use the 16-80mm f4, which I highly recommend. I’ve also used the 10-24mm f4 and love it, as well as the 55-200 and 50-140. Cheers!
Keep up the great work! Your photos are amazing and definitely have a narrative vibe. I really like the format of videos which is inspiring and educational. Your Zine on the huts was great and can't wait for the ebook to launch!
All the kind words mean the world to me! So stoked you like the zine, and the videos. Can’t wait to get the book finished and posted as soon as possible 🤙🏻
Enjoyed this Sam, all handy bits of advice. On the first point about storms, I 100% know what you're talking about as someone who loves storms and photographs tornadoes. With that being said, I would say that photographing before/during/after storms is more one method of adding atmosphere to a photograph, but isn't really 'Key' to landscape photography. There are many styles of landscape photography that don't require fleeting atmosphere, and there are many other ways of getting atmosphere other than just storms. On the second point about seeking unique perspectives. 100% agree this can be a great one getting an image that stands out among others, and if people ask how you took it then that indicates a unique perspective. However, again, this is just one of many different styles of creativity in landscape photography. A photographer who is more focused on story or character of the subject may not want a mind bending unique perspective, as their creativity is going other places and a unique perspective in some cases would just distract from that. Much of Simon Baxters work comes to mind. On the third point, I think you are getting the pattern. Going into an image with a narrative in mind can be a fantastic way to create interest. However, some styles of photography are more narrative focused than others, and there is nothing wrong with someone choosing to simply photograph a pristine landscape without a clear narrative. So, in summary, I think these are all great pieces of advice and are great things to try applying to ones photography. However, I would say that these are more things that you have discovered you love to incorporate into your photography, but they are not universal 'Keys' to landscape photography. You have found your style and what you find fulfilling, and there is much to be learned from your advice. I take no issue with the advice, just the framing as this is what you ought do if you want better landscape photos. all the best!
Love all the feedback Tobias, I appreciate it. There’s never a rule in photography that must be followed, so to your point these aren’t all going to be essential every time. They are certainly amongst my keys to landscape photography as they consistently allow for more compelling photos. I will say that while I agree someone’s goal doesn’t always have to be introducing narrative or to take advantage of compelling conditions, those things will never detract from a photo, and in my opinion will 100% of the time improve it. That’s why I include them as keys, even though, again, there are no rules or requirements in art. There are many many other “keys” I could have chosen, these are just the ones I felt like talking about today haha. Basically it all boils down to being intentional with your photos. Cheers!
Hi! First of all, I love your content, you’re so talented! I wanted to ask if you would recommend it for video compared to the Fujifilm X-H2, besides the amazing photos it takes!
Hey, really appreciate the support! The X-H2 will be a better video camera. That said, I use the X-T5 for video all the time, and it's very very good. Just depends what your needs are! Most of my videos are filmed either entirely or in large part with the X-T5 if that helps.
I love your videos, they're so cinematic, well shot and edited. They always have a great message and are filled with passion. Please keep doing what you're doing!
Really appreciate your support! Been around for quite a while now, and it means a lot that you enjoy the videos!! I’m not stopping, just trying to figure out what videos I want to make, and how to keep building a community with them!
What an amazing intro, movie like quality
So stoked you like it. 🤙🏻 thanks for the feedback!
The story of a photograph is hard for me to find, especially in landscapes, except for the place being a creation of God.
It’s not always easy to find the narrative. Whatever interests you!
Another great video. Seeing a lot of overlap in features and users across Nikon and Fuji. I'm a Fuji shooter and have been toying with the idea of moving to full frame. Nikon, at least on paper, looks to have everything I'm looking for (except maybe compact size).
Appreciate that 🤙🏻 I’ve used most of the major brands and Nikon is just so dang good. Love the feel in hand, the look, and I believe the lens mount is the most versatile/powerful of them all. They may be slightly bigger size, but their weight isn’t much bigger if at all on some models, they just opt for a bigger grip reminiscent of the older Nikons. Can’t recommend them high enough.
Thanks for the video, and your honesty of your personal favourite lens. There are some really silly comments in this feed from prime lens snobs, but this 16-80 is a good lens for most things and is very versatile. I’m fortunate to be able to have several lenses for different conditions but if I could only have one, it may well be this one for the reach, weather sealing and relative sharpness. The times I needed others, I’d just rent them. 😊
Thanks Steve! There will always be good conversations to have around prime vs zoom, but many people aren't actually interested in a conversation, just an attach hahaha; doesn't bother me one bit. I'd be lying if I said this is a perfect lens, it's just the perfect one and done for my Fuji System if I'm only going to have one lens. Like you, I use quite a few lenses and enjoy them. However, what motivated me to make this video was the idea of "what would I grab if I could only take one lens, and I had to leave today for absolutely any possible shooting scenario"? Cheers!
Save yourself some money. Second hand x-t2 or 3 is something to checkout
I’ve owned both and love them! They don’t cut it for my video needs, and I do prefer the 40mp sensor quite a bit more, but they are insanely excellent cameras. Cheers!
the footages in your video are filmed with the x-t5 ?
Yep!
@@SamBugas It is very beautiful, i am very surprised by what this camera looks to do, as people as you say might be more careful to allusion. I have see worries from some people about the dials on the top that could be damaged with time by dust or rain. How is it for you ?
@@JacquesPerconte I've heard those same worries but have not personally experienced any issues with the X-T5 or the X-T3/2
A zoom is really not “just one lens.” Your video is rather silly.
Haha what? It is quite literally a single lens
Thank you for stating the obvious!
Fujifilm isnt the best in low light. Anything over f2 is useless at night for professional work. Otherwise, yes, makes sense to use a capable zoom lens.
I tend to find it works quite well in low light depending on the lens. I also work professionally at 2.8 and above (2.8-5.6) all the way to late afternoon/early evening. Suppose it all boils down to what you are willing to do to work with noise. Fuji noise looks much cleaner than many other brands too, so the cleanup is quite easy.
Definitely keen to see a stitching video at some stage!
Will do mate!
Being able to stich photos together is a good skill to have but there are times when it is not a practical option. It's not applicable to every subject and you have to take lighting conditions, moving subjects and is best done on a tripod that not everyone has or carries all the time. The more photos you take to make one where you have to move the camera the bigger chances are you didn't get it right if you're not careful or use the right techniques.
It definitely has moments where it can be a challenge. That said I don’t agree you need a tripod. I’ve never actually used a tripod for stitched photos, and I’ve done stitches of up to 36 photos. I pretty close to never use a tripod unless it’s for Timelapses or Astro photography. Thanks for commenting and watching! Stoked to have you around 🤙🏻😊
I have multiple camera bodies and systems both DSLR and mirrorless cameras that I put together over a 16 year period. I photographed so many different subjects in all kinds of lighting conditions and weather, i primarily photograph landscapes and wildlife but also travel, hot air balloons , fireworks, travel and airshows. Along the way i got involved in event photography and during a five year time period, I photographed weddings, some sports, birthdays baptisms, family photos and portraits and a motorcycle club photo shoot. This Along with everything thing i photographed took a wide variety of glass. I have in my collection a Fujifilm kit that consists of a XT3, XT5 ,XH2 and recently a XT50. GLASS from Fujifilm and Viltrox, zoom lens and prime. Today I got a 8mm f 3.5 Fujifilm prime lens, it's the widest lens i have, my long lens is a Fujifilm 100-400mm Fujifilm zoom lens i have on the XH2. I have a 16-80 f4 alongside many other F4 IBIS zoom lens, I use them mostly on the XT3 since the camera is not equipped with IBIS. i like to be able to photograph a variety of subjects and enjoy using different cameras and lens.
Sounds like you have an amazing kit! I totally agree, it’s a blast to have different systems with different glass. I love having diversity when I can 🤙🏻
please make stitch video. I love my 16-80, however, the f/4 is limiting for landscape astro and thus the samyang 12, f/2.
Thanks for the feedback, I’ll definitely make it eventually. I totally agree it’s not always bright enough. I don’t see that as a hindrance for landscape photography, but Astro for sure!!
I always use only these two lenses: the Fujifilm 35mm f1.4 and the Fujifilm 16-80mm f4. I love them. Thanks for the video.
Glad you liked it! That 35mm seems incredible. I’ll definitely grab one some day!!
Great video - I'm so torn between getting the xs20 and the xt5 for my Japan trip... If I'm a hybrid shooter maybe a bit more video focused, which would you recommend?
Honestly, the XS-20 is an incredible little camera. In many ways it is more than enough, and given the open gate option for video, it can even be a better vid cam than the X-T5 in some ways. If you need weather sealing, theres no question the X-T5 is the way to go, otherwise the XS-20 should be more than enough. I've considered picking one up as a second video cam for youtube and filmmaking.
@@SamBugas thank you!! i'm thinking the xs20 is the one for me. I also forgot to ask - what lens were you using here with the xt5?
@@kellymei.just the 16-80mm f4. Enjoy whichever choice you make! Cheers
Hello Sam, will you use the Fuji for your wedding photography journey?
Hey there! I also have a Nikon z8 that I tend to use for my paid work. It’s just that extra little bit better with AF, but I also have lenses for it that work better for that kind of work. HOWEVER, I would be more than happy to shoot a wedding with a Fuji X-T5. It is more than sufficient AF, and the files are gorgeous and would fit that style of photography extremely well. My ideal wedding kit for the Fuji system would include the new 33mm 1.4 and the 56mm 1.2 WR ii. I’d be elated to shoot a full that with that (maybe tossing in an 18mm for getting ready and reception shots)
@@SamBugas Hey Sam , Thank you for your prompt response and advice on lens and AF.
What are You even talking about? Why 16-80/4 not XF 16-50/2.8-4.8? New Fuji kit lens outperforms 16-80/4 in every single metric, beside lacking little of reach. Fujinon 16-80/4 do it all lens? Yeah sure.. Go ahead shoot low light live concert with it. Or weddings 😂
Haha thanks for the weirdly antagonistic chat. You’re right, if I were shooting concerts or weddings I’d opt for a brighter lens. I shoot landscapes and adventure work where it thrives. I also agree that new lens looks incredible. I’d love to test it, but I won’t buy a lens that is effectively redundant given what I already own and love. I have shot weddings, music, and actively shoot events professionally. Just a heads up that you come off a little overly heated 😂
Does the 16-80 utilize the 40mp sensor? I’ve just ordered the 16-55 mkll to be my starter lens with my new X-T5 for landscape and close up, I want to enlarge to 1 metre. And yes I’d be interested in a stitching video thanks 🙏🏻
I’m not sure if it’s on the list as being compatible, but it is certainly up to the task in my experience. Is it the sharpest lens out there? No, is it plenty sharp to print large, absolutely. That new kit lens looks incredible. I think you’ll be very happy!
@ great thanks Sam, will be my first camera in 40 years and I want to choose wisely
@ I think you’ve made a very fun, and very good choice :)
Nice video, and I agree that in principle, and especially for reactive photos (which are often some of the best), having the broadest focal range is preferable. And of all my images on flickr, the one that has the most 'faves' is one of the very few I took with the 16-80. But with all that said (and its possible I had an unusually inferior copy of the lens), I couldn't keep it. Once I did image comparison shots with the 16-55, and especially for the foliage in the images, the 16-80 just couldn't hold up (branches that should have been well defined were diffuse, leaves and other aspects looked soft and undifferentiated). I didn't really see the 16-80 as producing print quality images I would be happy with, without having the thought that... this would be better, if only... (the same thought that now leaves my 18-55 with little use). It's a bit of a shame, as the 16-55 - at f2.8 - is rather bulky and heavy for hiking/landscape (it would be nice if they would make an f4 version of that; though at least the 16-55 mk2 coming this December is somewhat lighter and smaller). Lately my more general approach has been to have the 16-55 as my primary on a fuji with in body stabilization, and then perhaps the 70-300 on a second body (which doesn't need to have in body image stabilization). As an aside, I would highly recommend any fuji user to trial DxO PureRaw. The improvement in image quality (and especially for the lenses that need it more - e.g the 18-135 I use for kayaking) is exceptional.
So much good info here. I find my copy is quite sharp, but definitely not extraordinary. I’ve printed up to A2 and had perfect results, so perhaps you did have a soft copy. My lens also has quite a bit of play when the barrel is extended, but it’s survived some very tough outings so I’ve come to just trust it. The new kit lens looks really amazing honestly. I’d probably get that before I got the 16-55 just due to the size. As with all my videos, it’s worth noting that I do have other gear I use, and I typically do have a brighter or more unique lens alongside this one, but it still stands as my one and done do it all lens. Thanks for watching and chatting!
I also shoot Fuji and the Tamron 17-70 is my most used lens, so I understand the attraction to that zoom range. I'm still very much a generalist, so I jump around to other lenses depending on the subject and genre. You have nice channel here. I subscribed before you Peru trip and look forward to your videos. Lovely images, especially your color palette. Keep them coming.
I’ve heard amazing things about that lens! Would love to give it a run eventually. Seems the size is a bit larger than the 16-80 which I still feel is the right size to go on long runs with, but the 17-70 seems like it could be an even more useful range and aperture. Thanks for the support! Stoked to have you here and I really appreciate the kind words. Always changing that color pallet haha, but I suppose there’s a bit of a pastel ethereal tone I’ve gone after for years. Cheers!
Very nice video, reallu like your narrative flow. You deserve more followers so I suscribed to your channel and to the newsletter :)
I really appreciate the support! The narrative and drama is definitely my style hahaha. Stoked you enjoy that, and look forward to having you around 🤙🏻
gracias por el video, un saludo
Cheers!
I have been seeing a lot of content around the fuji 16-80 f4 and here you are with a video on the same topic ! Easily one of the best videos :)
Too kind! Thanks for the support🤙🏻 I try to make unique videos, but these popular lenses often have quite a few hahaha. I’m glad you liked it😊
I would like to see a stitching video. I've been able to do it in LR fairly successfully with the main problem being moving elements between frames, such as water or blowing trees.
It’s a bit fickle in some scenes for sure! Sometimes a matter of chance. I don’t do it any kind of special way, but I’ll make the video eventually because I think the shooting process is quite fun for it.
I use the 16-80 and 70-300 as my landscape kit, always performs really well. Would like to learn more about stitching images together and process in LR. XT5 user. Thanks!
Epic kit for sure! Gear that just works 🤙🏻 I haven’t used the 70-300 much, but I love the size to performance ratio
Your stitching process would be very interesting to see :) Nice video!
Awesome, I’ll make sure to put it together eventually! Cheers 🤙🏻
Right now, I can’t say I have an interest in stitching photos together, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it. Who knows what tomorrow will bring, right?
Haha totally fair! I learned it from a video by alex strohl probably six years ago and many of my favorite shots have since come as a result. I’ll eventually make it as the process is relatively fun and can pull you out of a bind sometimes. Cheers!
beautiful shots brother - just waiting for black friday to order my first fuji xt5. I'm so hyped. absolutely stunned…
It’s a killer gadget 🤙🏻 Enjoy!
One of the best perspective about why glass is more important and critical than a camera body. I see hundreds of so-called YT photography pundits pushing camera bodies around like underwear’s. It’s crazy at the end of the 30 years of professional photography comes down what you so eloquently put into its all about what combination of lenses and optical/focal length match your type style of photography. For me as a hybrid landscape, architecture and portrait photographer the two lenses I cannot be without 24/70 F 2.8 and a 16-35 either 2.8 or 4 personally Im a big fan of Canon 16/35 II L series and my 24/70 choice is Sigma ART DN. I have covered World Cup 2022 as a team Argentina 🇦🇷 photographer with this combination my third which I keep on tours is 70-200. That’s it these 3 lenses do bulk of my professional and personal work.
Really stoked you enjoyed the video 🤙🏻 Sounds like you really know your stuff. Ultimately there’s no right answer on the kit portion, but there’s certainly a main lesson, glass matters most haha. I’ve never had a 24-70 exactly, but the range is so practical. My favorite lens ever will be a wide zoom like the 16-35. Cheers!
@ I am glad to find your channel because I can see your passion for photography and also admire not pushing what you may consider to be the best focal ranges but rather emphasizing learning about what’s suits ones style and preferences. I am thinking about sharing my experience would love to collaborate with you. I am based in Southern California if you are around give me a holler
is this a merged compo with focus stack? bcause that lens is dammn sharp for drop this type of raw file at that aperture
Hey! No this is a single photo, but the raw data you’re seeing is incorrect. The lens has no communication with the camera, so the camera basically assigned data to the file at random. I believe this was taken around F14
@@SamBugas thx for the feedback and info , your style is really nice.. a mix between Dani Ernst and Nick Page. Congrats!
@ dang that’s quite the compliment! Earnst is pretty near the top of my favorites list haha. Really appreciate the support!
I am with you man, I never shoot video on anything that is narrower than 21mm. Actually I always shoot on a 21mm prime (Fujinon 14mm f2.8). I didn't take a leap yet to get something wider, but I imagine that the 15mm is a good companion to 21mm. 18mm would probably be way to similar.
It’s just such a good way to build in story! It’s actually a 10mm with a 15mm full frame equivalent, so really quite wide. It’s been a blast to use!
Wow great video sam ! I was wondering how you add light to your photos ! The payoff was worth it 😁👍
Hey thanks so much for watching! Light is accentuated for the most part using radial filters in Lightroom. The combination of a slight negative dehaze, a lowered clarity, and some exposure leads to a nice blooming light source. I go through most of this around the final third of the video, but if you have any questions, let me know!
Perfect two lenses for me at the moment are the Sony 20-70mm F4 G and the 70-350mm F4.5-6.3 G for my ZV-E1. I film in nature 90% of the time. I used to have the much bigger and heavier Canon 100-400 ii and a Tamron 24-70mm F2.8 with an R5, but I value size and weight much more now. Having the extra 4mm on the wide end makes a huge difference and clear image zoom means I basically have a 20-105mm lens - love it! Losing one stop of light on the lenses makes little difference with ISO performance these days, the bokeh loss is marginal and I use a deeper depth of field most of the time anyway. A third lens would be a fast prime like a 24mm, but it's not essential and I could happily make anything I wanted to with just the two previously mentioned lenses.
Amazing kit with some great considerations! I have my "big" kit in the nikon Z8 that I use for a lot of my paid work (and plenty of fun work too), and then I have a fujifilm system for days that I just want a super small setup. I may be nabbing a rather large lens soon that I'll make some videos on after use, and the hope is that while it's larger, it will actually cut out two lenses from my kit...more to come! Cheers
