My name is Johnny and I spend a lot of time in Substance Designer
I find that most tutorial content online can be summed up by either "You should do A" or "You should do A instead of C" - Instead of this I've always wanted my students to have a really solid understanding of what A, B and C do so that they can actually gain a knowledge base and apply that to future problems of their own.
I bring eight years of experience to the table working as an instructor and mentor at Think Tank Training Center. I also created the Substance Designer course for the online program as well as instruct the Advanced Environment Production for Games course.

Celebrating the Holidays in Substance Designer
In this Substance Designer Tutorial we're going to build these twinkling Christmas lights - This was a great opportunity to look at using the path and spline nodes as well as some more advanced blending methods.
Hope everyone enjoys their holidays

Making Catacomb Walls in Substance Designer
Просмотров 2,3 тыс.Месяц назад
Today we're going to be learning how to make a Catacomb wall material in Substance Designer. This is the first full material walk through I've done. I wanted to do something spooky for the Halloween season and Skulls are almost always my answer. In this tutorial we will walk through the graph I made and talk about the more interesting parts. If you want a realtime node-by-node tutorial of the e...

This channel is so underrated. Thanks for all the knowledge.
Go forth and spread the good word
You're batsh!t insane!! I'd pay for these tutorials :D
It's very cool! Thanks for the knowledge!
When you make HD Minecraft cobblestone
That's not a bad idea
Happy Xmass Eve Johnny!
The video at the start was perfect lmao. Happy Holidays!
risking the copyright strike
Can you please upload those patron videos on your youtube membership plans The reason is that my country is rejecting lots of international transactions so i can't send money in patron as it requires USD. The RUclips membership however does shows my local currency from which i can pay and youtube will handle all the taxes
I don't do RUclips memberships 😬
@@Johnny_NodesWhy?
Awesome!
I hope u can make a discord server that helping everyone to make that and sending tutorials to let us follow it would be great
Awesome present for the holidays! Thank you for another great tutorial!
Please consider updating (or replacing) your screen recording software. You were dragging reference images into the view and the recording software didn't catch it. It also doesn't catch pop-up windows like when you expose a value or when opening the edit gradient window. Thank you!
I didn't really notice that you are back after a longer break! Great to see you. Definitely best tutorials on Substance Desginer!
Oh we are so back
Happy Holidays, Johnny! Always appreciate your knowledge. 🎄 🎅
Hey Sean! You too! - I dont think ever got a chance to see your Demo reel? DM sometime
cant you just stack them with height blend nodes
You can give it a whirl to try it out! I think experimenting is good - Shape splatter will probably get even closer, but I think for the overlaps I needed this is a good way!
Came for the graph, stayed for the hat... Amazing piece Johnny thank you for the video 🫶
Legend!
Amazing stuff! Learned a lot. Thanks Johnny
Your channel has helped me out immensely the last year. Always enjoy your projects on the channel and thank you for your expertise!
This!
Incredible!
just made my extra extra large coffee and opened youtube wow what a treat
Better if it were hot chocolate!
@ you’re so right i’ll revise my learning experience for this graph
This is great! When you mention the references i can't see them. Probably you were recording the substance designer window and not the whole screen.
Exactly, thats also why we cant see pop-ups and dropdown menus. That being said, there is still plenty of information to follow along and grasp the full thing, no problem!
You're correct! I had it on Capture Game window instead of Display :( I had rebuilt my machine and OBS wasnt set up correctly - If you guys run into a spot that seems hard to see I can fill in any gaps
thanks boss
Amazing work!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!! ❤
ur the goat!!
Sell me a course for the first material now ;_;
Amazing tutorial!
So happy to have you back! I also like using the Histogram Select to grab the lowest parts of a height map to add grime, water level, etc - I tend to use the Curvature to grab the highest parts and would used to invert that same result for the lows, but I find that Histogram Select saves me an extra node 👀
Interesting, I usually use Scan for that! I've used curvature for similar, sometimes the issue is that curvature isn't giving you the depth as much as the areas with the most concavity (not always the same!)
how to drag the first to the second on7:36?
You can just left click and drag a graph into another graph
I've just hovered the video and immediately knew it had to be in my list of tutorials to do. I'm going to learn a lot from this, thanks !
Hope to see your channel grow with these other video formats!
you're the best! Thanks for this videos! :)
something is wrong with his voice... It's was vibrating 😅
There is never enough cobblestone in the world!
So useful!
It brings me to tears to finally see you back making more tutorials, happy tears that is. Is it possible for you to cover some of the stuff related to natural materials like moss or those really sharp rocky materials that look ultra realistic? Enrico Tammekänd had made a material which was closest to what i was looking for and posted it on artstion called Rock Scree, and I got no clue how on earth people are able to get such sharp looking rocks. Most of the stuff that i tried myself even after making custom nodes doesnt get me anywhere close to how detailed those types of rocks look. If you can make a tutorial specifically for these types of rocks it would be so coollllllll
Love the thousand needles ref. lol
The mind yearns for summer of 2019 😔
a nice short video to have my coffee with
POV you are drinking a 60 gallon coffee

Thank you for another great tutorial!
Welcome Back!
Thank you! I'll def keep the histogram scam in mind 🤝
Another victim of Big Greyscale 😔
@Johnny_Nodes hahaha. I missed that one!
I saw this on artstation and was wondering how it was done
sick
Squishyyy Squishyyyyy!!!!!
god of grayscale
Awesome!!
Techniques like these help at the designerlevel aspect of game design ?
Thank you for everything you are doing !
You're the best, man. This video is gold.
