Plein Air Painting Bonnie Doon
Join me and bask in the serenity of a morning by the lake in Bonnie Doon and create a plein air painting. The birds in this area were extremely noisy to the point I could hardly hear myself think. Bonnie Doon is such a beautiful area I must say I was surprised when I arrived to find such a gorgeous landscape and not that many powerlines, the movie the castle did a good job at making this place into a well kept secret. I used a combination of brushes and pallet knives to create this painting. Thanks for watching, please be sure to give it a like and subscribe to my channel and feel free to drop a comment.

@@bahumdinger8361 you're welcome 😊
What? Kate Bonnie painting a bonnie? Beautiful.
@@clex2005 hahaha 😂 the name was a coincidence. Thank you.
Another lovely piece! Trees turned out great and I love what you did with the sky. I gotta say, I wasn’t super impressed with the scene (at least as it looked on camera) but you turned it into a wonderful painting. ❤❤
@@JeffJensen55 thank you Jeff 😊 I'm really happy with how this one turned out!
The scenery for this one is so serene, love it, beautifully done. 😍👍🖌️🎨🌳😍
@@zoewhiteart7676 thanks Zoe 🥰 it certainly was a beautiful spot. There is a fairly famous old Australian movie that was made here.... But they didn't show the pretty spots 🤣 they would say 'ah the serenity' and then show the powerlines 🤣
Wonderful painting Kate. When the light changes so quick do you focus on doing the shadows first. I've wondered what the best way to paint at that time of day would be. Love the colour of the flowers, so cool.
@@bluedogbluey6742 thank you 😊 when the light is changing fast it helps if the sun is to the side of your subject because that slows it down a little. I've never paid that much attention to my order though. The flowers were so pretty, I love orange!!
All my favourites of yours have water in them and this is no exception. Bravo maestro!!!!
@@hamishmorgan100 thanks so much Hamish 😊 this was such a beautiful location!!!
How's the serenity hahaha What a movie, classic! The ol' cockies were in full screech mode. Love your painting, the trees look fantastic. It would have been hard to get the light down with it changing so much. You forgot to do the Bonnie Doon song...
@@bluedogbluey6742 it is a great movie! Yes they were noisy as 🤣 thank you so much I am so pleased with it! hahaha oh no I sung the Bonnie Doon song to myself in the car on the way.... Off camera.... To save all your ears 🤣 "we're going to Bonnie Doon" 😂 I should have included it in the video!
Is the name thing a coincidence? Nice job capturing the sky and lake colors before they changed completely on you. They look great behind your trees. The dark red looks great under the lighter green and yellow tones in the leaves. Nice job on the painting, especially since the board made detailing your trees that much tougher. Your noisy birds reminded me of a very special episode of "Happy Days" where Fonzie decides to sleep outside in the woods when it's really dark out. Slowly the animal noises start to escalate to a loud and unnerving degree, and finally Fonzie sits up and yells "COOL IT!!" at which point all the noises fall silent and Fonzie returns to his nap. Not sure how that would have worked on those noisy birds, but I'm sure I would have been tempted to try it.
@@DQ_ArtGroupie hahaha yes the name is coincidence that its the same as my last name 😂 thanks so much! It was a gorgeous sunrise!! Yes the red undertones really helped the leaves to pop. Thank you so much!!! Hahahaha 🤣 that's a funny story, I don't think that would work for these birds 🤣 but if I had of heard this story before maybe I would have given it a go!
Another cracking good one mate
@@neilsmith1688 thank you 😊
Beautiful is it, Kate you never mentioned your pallet colours
@@neilsmith1688 oh I never do, but my standard pallet is titanium white, burnt umber, burnt sienna, ivory black, lemon yellow, cad yellow, crimson, cad red, Phalo blue and ultramarine blue. Sometimes I may as an extra colour or two but more or less that's what I use and mix the rest.
Have you ever tried a wet towel around your neck in the hot weather painting is great
@@neilsmith1688 I didn't think of that, thanks for the suggestion!
Braving the elements to paint. That's dedication.

@@taniad5097 thanks Tania 😊
You are a real trooper to get set up in the cold and before sunrise. Thank you for doing that so you can share your painting video with us. I understand your redoing your foreground several times. I admire how you kept at it until it became cohesive with the rest if your painting. Sometimes I struggle with an area and tend to overwork it (when using watercolor). When all else fails, I have been known to wash the paint off under the faucet, let it dry and try again. 🤪 Hope you had a warm rest of your day.😊
@@NancyTipton-u8e thanks Nancy 😊 this certainly was a chilly one! You're welcome 😊 I'm so glad you enjoy my videos! Oh yeah with water colours washing it off works with oils sometimes I scrape it all off with a pallet knife, that doesn't happen often. Thank you 😊💕
That's a cracking good one Kate
@@neilsmith1688 thank you 😊
Thanks Kate...looks great
@@bahumdinger8361 thank you 😊
Are you painting with acrylics?
@@hairdebi no, it's oil paint 😊
have you tried covering parts of your board with paint and turpentine? I think trying so with brush can give a super fast coverege and color on your board/canvass which you can work on. This would speed the painting so much and after that you could use palette knife for the rest of the painting. Would be handy for mountains in this painting.
@@Michal_Kuras I use solvent not turps and nah I find doing a colour wash is an extra step and I only do my drawing up with it, most of the time.
That's got the wow factor in it love it 😀

Kate, what do you think about this poem about your painting: Ode to Kate Bonnie’s Merriwa Adventure In Merriwa’s air, with brush in hand, Kate painted the river, the view so grand. With willows and shadows, birds chirping away, The perfect plein air kind of day. But oh! The wind had other plans, It tossed her painting, disrupted her stance. A splash of solvent, a canvas marred, Yet Kate, the trooper, wasn’t scarred! With grace and skill, she made it right, Her damaged painting back in sight. "Great save!" the viewers cheered with glee, “You fixed it up so perfectly!” From clouds to shadows, her work admired, “Your trees are magic, so inspired!” "Bravo, maestro!" the comments chimed, Each word a testament to her time. Seven hours outside, what dedication, Even through a near devastation. But Kate kept on, with paint and heart, A masterpiece, a work of art. So here's to Kate, who braved the day, And turned mishaps into bright display. With every brushstroke, you soar so high, Your art, Kate Bonnie, will never die!
@@neildes7681 I love it this, thanks Neil 😊

@@scotthaynes5419 thank you so much 😊
Really love your foliage. Always looks great👏👏👏
i liked the clouds a lot, too bad you covered them with poplars :) they looked rly nice, specialy the one on the most foreground (closest to horizon). If you want to watch some tutorials on how to pain clouds then i recommend wholeheartedly a yt channel called Painting Skies. There a dutch painter who specialisies in sky/sea scapes explains some techniques. Rly good stuff and it may be handy for painting on boards. ;)
Thanks Michal 😊 I'll check out the channel I was just experimenting with it this day but I'm happier with how I usually paint them so I won't paint them this way again. I was really happy with the poplars though 😊
@@Kate_Bonnie nice, its good to try new things, just go with your gut, or to say the other way, just do what u think is right :) poplars are always great, Monet agrees :D
@@Michal_Kuras thank you 😊
Kate , I love watching your videos, and I love your enthusiasm. I did have a question I was wondering if you put gesso on the board before you paint. Keep painting, luv your work.
@@scotthaynes5419 hi Scott 😊 thank you 😊 no I use the linseed oil to seal the wood it also works nicely with the oil paint however recently I have taken to using house paint to prime the boards 😊
Does it feel a little like you're sabotaging your work when you have to cover up a background with foreground trees and things? I would think that would be hard. You're so talented.
@@clex2005 no not at all, because if I don't put the details it may not end up looking real, because sometimes you just don't know what will and won't be visible 😊 thank you so much 😊

Wow, Kate, you did a miraculous save on your wonderful painting. I know how disheartening that moment the wind sent things flying probably was for you. And that your solvent, etc. was pouring out into the ground…I think I might have cried at that moment! Anyway, I want to commend you for keeping it together and successfully touching up your really amazing painting. All of your paintings wow me. Many of my watercolor paintings do not turn out as I hope. Some turn out great..which keeps me painting.😊 I wanted to mention that an artist painting demonstration I saw once said all of his paintings are inspired by shadows…many times shadows of ordinary things or views. I just wanted to share that when you were talking about the shadows of your trees and how you have not used shadows enough in your paintings.😊 I hope you have a great day and since you have already experienced your “almost disaster” for the year you won’t have to have any more. 🤞🤞🤞😊
@user-zi8qi9ip2g awww thanks Nancy 🥰 yeah it was not the easiest to keep it together I really did feel like crying in that moment but I pushed through as best I could. Thank you 😊 water colour is very difficult though, so I'm sure you must be a good artist to manage watercolour! Yes, shadows really make a big difference! Sometimes I'm out painting so long the light and shadows are in the opposite direction by the time I finish 😂 haha I hope you are right about the almost disaster meaning no more for the year 😂 hope you have a great day too! Thanks for your comment 😊
Another great painting and vlog. You spent seven hours outside! jeez your a trooper! You saved the painting though and it turned out wonderful, I love the trees you paint and the shadows make them pop even more. Never painted with oils outside 😅 but would love to. 💜🖌️🎨
@@zoewhiteart7676 thank you Zoe 😊 I love getting outdoors, hahaha I was looking a bit tanned by the end of the painting though I noticed when I was trying to blend the paint using my hand before I realised it was coming off the painting. Thank you so much 😊 I really just felt like going to my car and crying but I promised myself I'd fix it when I reached home and just not think about it until then. Oh yes I am so happy with the trees and their shadows. I do love the level of contrast you can achieve with oils, however they like all mediums have their drawbacks (they are heavy to carry around, take a long time to dry and are expensive compared with other mediums). Definitely worth giving a try, I'm sure you would do great with them you're a really good artist, you are so amazing at watercolour, I'm hopeless at those.
Really lovely Kate, and great save ❤ excellent! Love the willow over the river and the sounds of birds and nature in the background, perfect ❤
@@taniad5097 thank you Tania 🥰❤️ oh the sounds of nature are so lovely when I'm out painting, it makes it so peaceful, but you don't hear a lot of it in the videos, I really should try and include more of it!
Well done Kate, it turned out okay. You could probably see more damage than we could, it's only when the camera is up close we could see anything. We have all had days when things went wrong but you are amongst friends here. Well done, in the end it was fabulous. 😁🎨🖌️🖌️🖌️
@@petergates7962 thanks Peter 😊 yes, thankfully it worked out in the end. Thank you for your comment 😊
