Love your plans. My goal is to replace only and clear out whatever I don’t use. I want to choose a difficult project but a still deciding what to make.
Dressy because I’m a sucker for a bib overalls pinafore dress. You have styled it so cute with the boots and all too.
First, I love the plaid shirt you are wearing - I saw a similar fabric at Joann last week but didn't buy it out of an attempt at self-discipline such as your video is about 😁! I have been thinking along similar lines - patterns and fabric I purchased because I liked them (at the time) but nothing has happened with them and I need to re-evaluate. Also, I can only wear so much clothing in a year - what was I thinking?!? I plan to buy only as absolutely necessary and use what I have. We do get tired of what we have and marketing appeals to our desire for novelty so building that in as you are by rotating what you already have may be helpful to me as well. Thanks for the tips!
Love your idea of themed weeks. That turns it into a game 😊
I agree with your reasons for a low buy. I’m starting to have a huge wardrobe so my plans for the year is to sew as much, but make the projects more complex. So, instead of making a TNT top, use a new to me pattern. That pattern can come from stash like those that I have from when I was a Seamwork member or my current Cashmerette Club. Also I love your theme idea. For the make a statement, I think that I will use some of the beautiful shawls that I knit and never wear.
I’m doing the same challenge this year-no buying, just making if I want something! My first move? Unsubscribing from all promo emails (out of sight, out of mind 🤣). It’s tough, but honestly, it feels so liberating. Totally worth it! Thanks for sharing!
Those are some really solid plans. Good luck with everything. I love your coach court bag on the Dressform. What type of books do you like to read? Maybe, we can read the same book sometime and talk about it. I only have one other friend that reads for pleasure and sometimes we read the same books and its fun.
Great job on drawing up your intentional low buy year. So happy to hear your reading again. It’s a great mental reset hobby, in my opinion. Not sure if you like to write, but I’d highly recommend getting your low buy plans out to any publication who will print it. The quarterly sections really make it unique and interesting. Thanks so much for sharing-your red jacket is gorgeous!
I always wondered what the really prolific sewists do with all the clothes they make. There are only 365 days per year, and there’s zero demand for clothes adjusted to fit all our particular bodies.
I am definitely with you on almost every point in this video! It keeps my hobby a pleasurable hobby and gives me exactly what I want! So kudos to you for continuing on his journey!
I love your idea of theme month! I'm inspired to try something like that for myself...thanks
I have a small closet that I share with my husband. I also understand that there are only 7 days in a week and too many pieces causes headaches trying to decide what to pair with what. I also don't want multiple loads of laundry because it would be too easy for me to skip a week if I look in my closet and find plenty to wear. Keeping pieces that work with others and focusing on what I need for my climate. I'm lucky to live somewhere that is warm most of the year. I used the module system I heard of from Whitney from TomKat Stitchery.
I feel this whole video, except the purses . Lol
❤
I love your quarter idea, I started this year with the intention of not buying any fabric, but blew it already buying three new fabrics.
What a great approach. So much of what you said resonated with me. I am doing a similar thing as I need to save more to get to see my grandchildren who live abroad. I do buy notions and the odd pattern( which I intended to buy anyway) to use up my stash and a pile of remnants. So far, not perfect but a huge improvement. Good Luck. Lynne😊
Good luck Sara. Somehow I have ended up in low buy but more from loss of inspiration. I study those capsule wardrobes, count uses, count cost per wear and so on and as I finally narrowed by winter wardrobe (insert season) down to a size that would mean each piece worn x times, I naturally understood that I cannot keep adding more clothes or I will always have too many to wear. which since sewing is a hobby and not intentionally a method to add more clothes but give me creative outlets, is kinda frustrating!! I also added to my goals last year to make (or help others make) clothes for others so that I can still have the creative part but without the additional items! I also added a goal this year to make 'small things' like hats, mittens, ski longs, and so on, that I normally find boring. I checked off one so far, backlava, and am starting a yoga mat bag. So that might help me allot AND simultaneously help lower the stash !. It seems then that your goals are eventually the natural progression from "make all the things ". I find that so interesting! And helps me feel like I am on the right track. The only other goal I have is whittling down the stash which started over 100 things to now under 50. My eventual goal is to perhaps have just enough to make 1 thing per month for myself thus forcing my purchases to be super focused, high quality, and known loves. so a little stash because it is just not reasonable to have buy as you go where I live. Sorry for babbling on, your thoughtful process inspired a little thought here. Glad you stuck around RUclips as you have a totally unique approach and I look forward to your content whenever it comes!
Consider sewing for charity. It reduces the stash (depending on the type of fabric you have) and fills the creative need to sew. I sew for Dress A Girl but there are others. Hospitals and organizations need small quilts, pillows, etc. for patients. With so many people suffering loss due to disasters there may be needs that can be met through sewing. Do some research and keep on sewing!😊
Hi! This video was very informative. I am also doing a low buy year. I love challenges and setting goals. I am on a fixed income so it seems like a good plan. I am not on Instagram. I don’t care what others are doing. You have put a lot of thought into your low buy year and you have great plans.
It’s a very good idea to occasionally sew something other than clothing. Just used a retreat time on new placemats for our home. I remembered why I left quilting, but pieced them and got them done. I’ve made all the napkins we use, etc. loved all of it, doing it by quarters may help me too, I’ve got enough machines, fabric, yarn, fiber, beads, etc.
I look forward to seeing how things unfold during the year.
Can I share my story? We just went through 3 devastating hurricanes and lost nearly everything. I lost all my clothes except the few things to wear in the torturous 115 heat index we were having. I also lost 95 percent of my stash. We had put so much stuff in the shed while trying to sell this place, and lost it all. I'm devastated. We went days each time without power, ways to live really. The last, Milton, took it all. 9 days without power, food, gas, ice, water. Stores lost everything too. Our generator was gas powered. It really changed us. I'm disabled and, after spending 2 days in our car in the driveway, I just cannot get energy back. Theres only so much money and we are definitely on a no buy year. This will be a slow and careful year, your video means a lot. I'm with you on the little things to get to be able to make something to wear. Not buy.
The theme weeks are great ideas 😊
I just love the way you think. I think we are soul sisters. Also it seems like your videos have kicked up a notch as far as filming, editing and such. Awesome job!
I really appreciate your intelligent, practical and fun ideas every post. Thank you for inspiration!
I like 👍🏼
Love this! Lots of creative ideas for using and enjoying what you already have! 😻👍👍
I spent way too much money on nonessentials last year so I’m also doing a low buy year. I have a monthly budget to keep me on track.
The corduroy jacket is really cool! It makes sense to keep sewing through your stash even if you are not looking to add items to your wardrobe. I’ve been forcing myself to sew down my stash and some items don’t work out but at least I have learnt something in the process and it’s less fabric in the stash. Other items work out and might replace things in my closet (better versions of a staple) And I like the idea of breaking the year into quarters and have different rules within those periods. A year is a very long time! And I find it hard to think of what I might need for summer in the middle of winter. I find it better to evaluate as the season arrives. You have inspired me to go look for items that have not been getting much wear and try find new ways to use them.
Everyone has one particular item of clothing or an accessory they love, yours is handbags. I tend to use the same one for a season mainly because I absolutely hate switching everything from bag to bag. Do you have a system that makes that easy, like pouches to hold personal items? I might actually change more if I had a less painful way of doing it 😂. Love your method of low buying though.
You obviously put a lot of thought into this, Sara. Good job! I think these kinds of mental exercises help us become better and more efficient sewists.
I think you've prepared to succeed with this plan Sara. You've put a lot of thought into it, and given yourself safety nets to help you achieve your goals. I'm aiming to stop buying any more fabric, and stick to severely limiting the amount of yarn I purchase, and also knit for charity this year. Whether I'll succeed remains to be seen!
I love that you aren’t doing this to follow a trend but because you have goals and intentions behind it. I love your February challenge to yourself!
Hi Sarah! I'm on a low buy year too. I have way too much stuff. 😔
I was thrilled when you said you try to care less about what people think. I agree if someone doesn’t like your style they don’t have to say so. 😊. My feet don’t like dressy shoes so I may have a fab outfit on…. With sneakers it may distract from the overall look but need to be able to walk. Your styling videos are always interesting to me. I wish you the best going forward. 😊
I appreciate you taking the time to share your perspective! thank you for the supportive comment.
I enjoy your videos and styling. I dislike haul videos or massive production of poorly made clothing. Thoughtful makes and styling are what I enjoy.
Thank you for sticking with me!
I don’t often comment but I do want to say I appreciate your content, and your point of view. Do what you want and worthwhile viewers will accept it.
thank you for the encouragement!
Sara, you are one of my absolute faves! Your honesty and openness with your feelings are valid and completely resonate with me. You should do what you need to do to protect your peace of mind. I'm watching no matter what or when. Hope your spirit finds a good fit with your plans going forward! 💗
thank you so much for being so supportive, I really appreciate it!
I am so glad you aren't quitting! I would really miss your content. This video is the vibe for 2025 - 💯. Sounds to me like you are making great choices. ❤
thank you for sticking with me!
Reminder: I love all these dresses on you!! ❤❤❤
Very much into low-buy!
thank you for weighing in!
Low Buy would be informative for those of us concerned about the environment. Reworking items to improve fit and functionality. Your videos have saved me time and energy, with more thought put into pre planning projects. Fly fronts just add bulk to my post baby belly.
i'm so glad i could help you be more intentional with your wardrobe! thanks for watching.
❤
Yes low buy!
thanks for weighing in!
Love your videos and will continue to follow your channel. Taking care of yourself is most important now!,❤
Thank you so much for your support!
I’m glad you decided to stay on RUclips. I really like seeing your makes. I have MS and understand when you can’t do what you want it can be upsetting. ❤❤❤
Thank you, Renee.
First Sara, let me apologize for the length of this comment. I want to tell you that as a subscriber of yours I will not be going anywhere! I love your channel and whatever you want to show us. Sometimes I must admit I don’t comment, but it doesn’t mean that I haven’t watched. So what I will do going forward is every video I watch if I don’t have anything to say I will give you a ❤ so you know I’m still here! Secondly, I have to tell you that you are not alone when it comes to your feelings on this entire social media thing! (I know it’s cliché, but it’s very true!). I want to share with you something that happened to me… back in 2018. Someone made a comment on a dress I thought I looked lovely in (and apparently so many others because that post got a lot of likes!). But this particular person decided they needed to tell me that I need to put princess seams in my dress for a better fit. That truly bothered me for a very long time, years in fact. I was very gracious and just told said thank you for the feedback. But what it made me realize is that when people make comments like this unsolicited, we can’t take it to heart because we’re allowing them to ruin our happiness! We’re giving them the power. So thanking this individual for her feedback and letting her know that I liked it the way it was, gave me my power back. (Unfortunately, she never commented on any of my other posts and that’s OK.) it took me many years to realize that I had taken my power back. So what I’m saying is, it’s difficult for us, especially if you’re an introvert like me to learn how to take your power back. I believe listening to all of the decisions you’re making now, are great ones for taking your power back! ❤ 💪🏽. So I say keep going at your own pace doing what you love! I’ll be watching! 😉🤗😘
thank you Myra, for the thoughtful comment. what a great way to frame it--as taking your power back. Thanks for sharing with me!
You are one of my favorite RUclipsrs so I'm glad you're staying. I enjoy seeing what you make and I'm 5'0" and wear clunky shoes too. I think they look fine. Hope you're feeling better soon.
yes! we can wear whatever we want. thanks for sticking around.
I will continue to follow you because I enjoy you, your candor and your channel Sarah. It’s easy to say things, not thinking how those words might affect, but as a sensitive soul, I struggle with giving too much attention to words spoken without thought. I am glad to hear that you are healing! Thank you.
what a great way to put it--i should remember not to pay too much mind to those who put out such thoughtless words. thank you.
Hi Sarah, I come here to watch your content because it's like having a chat with an acquaintance with similar interests. I like videos that are not edited, just chats. I would still watch if you don't even insert videos/photos of you wearing said item. Because it's like sitting with a friend showing you in the moment what she made.😊 If youtube is just a hobby for you, not for a living, it's not worth the stress! KNOW THAT WE LOVE YOU! I, too, am at an age where I don't care what others think. It's brave to put anything out there to share because people can be so ugly. I hope you just continue to share what you have been making and do exactly as much or little as you want! Take care, Katie
thank you so much for the encouraging words! they are much appreciated.
100% spot on! Take it from someone who had/has a cooking blog (my husband has sulfite sensitivity and gluten doesn’t like me very much). The comments that annoyed me most were the totally useless « Oh, that looks so yummy ». Man, just try it before you say anything! Anyway Sara, you do you and it is essential that a hobby that used to be a source of joy should remain so. Take good care of yourself, physically and mentally ❤.
i can't imagine what it must be like having people critique food videos. it must be so frustrating. thank you for sharing!
