Finnish Your Plate
США
Добавлен 12 авг 2021
What is Finnish food? What is everyday Finnish food? On this channel I will cook Finnish food with emphasis on ingredients that can be found outside of Finland. For expats, for home cooks, for anyone interested in Finnish culture.
I was born and raised in Finland but moved to the US when I was 20 years old, and I've lived in California and now I live in New York. Over the years, I've become more and more interested in recreating classic Finnish dishes, using local ingredients whenever possible.

Hash | Jauhelihaperunaviipalelaatikko
The sliced potato hash shares a lot with the macaroni casserole, but it's not nearly as popular. It's super easy to make though, and very hearty so watch this episode to find out how to make it!

Finnish Quark Donuts | Rahkamunkit

Everyone loves donuts! In Finland, a popular variation is to add some quark to the batter. Quark is a milk product similar to yogurt or cheese. #finnishfood #finnish #quark #donuts
Sea Buckthorn from Åland | Ahvenanmaan tyrnimarjat
Просмотров 19621 день назад
Åland is not well known, even by Finns. But the Finnish archipelago has some of the most beautiful scenery, and there are thousands of islands that have their own special food culture. Part of it that is lamb and sea buckthorns. Here I make a few different dishes with sea buckthorns including a lamb roast and a cocktail! You can order Sea Buckthorns frozen from here: nwwildfoods.com/products/fr...

Finnish Garlic Potato Hash | Valkosipulipyttipannu
Просмотров 517Месяц назад
Pyttipannu is a simple classic dish, but what will elevate it further is if you add some crispy garlic into it. In this episode I make a crispy garlic pyttipannu that will definitely keep you coming back for more!
Egg Butter | Munavoi
Просмотров 423Месяц назад
Egg butter is the must-have topping for Karelian pasties! All you need is some eggs and butter, a bit of salt and pepper and you have the perfect accompaniment.
Finnish Pork Sauce | Läskisoosi
Просмотров 657Месяц назад
Läskisoosi has a worse name than what it is. But that's partly because the name is a mistranslation from Swedish, where it's called fläsksås, literally pork sauce. Simply put, it's pork belly that has been fried and then a sauce is made with the drippings. Served with some mashed potatoes of course! #pork #porkbelly #finnish #finnishfood #sauce #mashedpotatoes #potatoes
Walpurgis Funnel Cakes | Vapputippaleivät
Просмотров 251Месяц назад
Walpurgis night is Finland's answer to the Carnival. The winter is over and summer is almost here! Most often people gather outside to celebrate, have a drink and toast, and everyone wears their graduation hats.

interesting, I usually put my onion (some seconds) before the ground meat so that it will absorb the taste. I will try doing it this way
So good this recipe so tasty
I will never be able to pronounce "Jauhelihaperunaviipalelaatikko" and I correct Americans on how to pronounce "Sauna."
It just rolls off your tongue!
Finnish words are so long because they actually include a couple of English words plus prepositions, etc.
Unbelievable, bought yesteday some ground beef the first time in like 4 months and instantly this pops up. Thanks for the amazing channel.
Thanks for watching!
This looks fantastic, love these traditional meals. Fantastic layering! I really like your secondary camera 🎥 Keep up the great work. James
Thank you!
What a delicious recepy...
Thank you!
Tulipuuroa sitten vaikka?
Nyt pitää kyllä Googlata, tulipuuro ei sano mitään...
@@finnishyourplate jauhelihaperunasoselaatikko.
Hyvää Juhannusta! The Finnish names keep getting longer and longer :) But since it's a simple, almost everyday dish, I guess it doesn't have a "traditional" name.
Haha yeah it's a very long name for sure!
looks fantastic! I'll definitely add this to the dinner rotation, not that hard to make either. Thanks!
Right, it's a quick weekday dish!
😂🤣😂GREAT WHEN I MIS 🇫🇮 & TURKU THERE I DOE THIS ... JUST DID THIS 🥔🥕🧅AND MINCEMEAT BACON 🚩ON TOP + I DOE ALWAYS VEGETABLEBOIULLION AND KETCHUPMIX BOUILLION IN IT... LOVELY ❤ ..JUST 1 DAY EARLIER DID THIS THAN YOU 😊NOW REALLY COMFORT FOOD LOVE❤ IT SO GOOD THAT IT'S GONE ALREADY IN 2 DAYS 😋 😇HEAVENLY
Good idea!
This is good stuff, but the minced meat and mashed potatoes casserole is glorious.
It's glorious in its simplicity!
My grandmother n mother would make this. It's kinda like hamburger helper
Yeah it kinda is, or maybe like Shepherd's Pie.
Thank you so much. I am going to try it now for my husband father's day.
Excellent!
Amazing so yummy
Thank you!
Being an American...I love hotdogs or grilled frankfurters in the summer months but this sounds amazing! I bet this would be a hit at baseball games!
Not a bad idea!
Hei! Can you recommend a good sausage/hot dog brand in Finland? We get overwhelmed at the grocery store because there are SO many different kinds. We're looking for a good, all beef (American?) deli style and so far no luck. Thanks!
How important is it that it's all beef? That might limit your choices. If you can eat pork, then Kivikylän is one of the best ones. Should be pretty readily available in all grocery stores in the Southern parts of Finland.
@KarenBarnum I just checked and Snellman has an all-beef frank, "Kunnon nakki nauta." Look for an all-green label in the sausage section.
@@finnishyourplate Thank you so much!
@@finnishyourplate Thank you!
The traditional way is with all the condiments = "kaikilla mausteilla"
True, for extra heartburn! Eaten while standing of course.
if you put some baking soda in the potatoes you get them nice and crispy. tossing them does that too, but baking soda is faster.
Oh yeah I've heard so too, I haven't tried it though. But that sounds like a great tip, next time I will definitely try it! Thanks!
makkispekkikset is one of those words that cause emotions in Finland :D
:D
I'm going to Finland in three weeks, thank you for the advice!
Perfect time to go to Finland!

So hearty and nutritious. Thank you!
You're welcome!
I love your videos. Calm and relaxed with no pretension and no awful musack. The only thing I would like are some close-up shots of the shaping stages and the finnished (😄) goods. Thank you and God bless
Thanks so much! And thanks for the feedback, I've already started to pay more attention to these exact things, so stay tuned and you'll see more!
19:00 Traktori, jätän tän vaa tähä, fairly certain long drink became lonkero because long drink is just so long to say, especially if you've had a few of those lonkeros
Siksipä monet ääntääkin traktorin "raktori"! Lonkero, lonkku... Mitäs muita nimiä niitä onkaan
Ole hyvä kiitos!
Kiitos!
Super nice! I am from Sweden, live in Romania, but love Finnish food and bread. And yes, Finnish mustard is no 1, especially the hot one.
Hej tusen tack för att du tittade! There's definitely similarities between Swedish and Finnish dishes, so hope you stick around and find some to your liking.
@@finnishyourplate Yes, have seen a baking clip with you. I keep Finnish food a notch over Swedish, love the root vegetables gratins. I used to work two years on and off in Finland, learned all about food and sauna :-D Will definitively follow your channel, kiitos!
finnish your plate your content inspires me to cook for my finnish wife every day
Oh that's lovely! Hope she enjoys the dishes!
Canadian here, we share hard winters. Our tradition is to put dark brown sugar and warm milk on top.
Sounds very good!
Now there are several brands making long drinks here in Finland. Most of them are alright, but there is still no real competition against the Hartwall original. Surprisingly, Pirkka makes a decent and cheaper alternative, only with a bit of a bitter aftertaste from the gin I suppose. A le Coq is not bad either, but maybe a bit too sweet with less alcohol in it.
They used to sell the Hartwall one in the USA too, but last time the liquor store told me that it's not available any more. This one however is very widely available across the US. I'll see if I can try a few of them when I go to Finland.
Ohh I saw these on reddit, I did not realize they were yours. Hyvät on munkit. Thanks for sharing.
Yes, I thought Reddit would appreciate them too! Thanks for watching!
Just read what it says on the pocket of your apron. I feel so seen right now. 😂
Quark is life! This reminds me of german Quarkbällchen!
Oh yeah it is very similar!
@@finnishyourplate 😁
Nice! I've just been experimenting with some different ways to make syrniki (if you know what it is).
I had to look it up!
My mouth is watering. It’s about 100f here in South Texas but these donuts and coffee sound great right now. 🙂
If you can get Quark (or make it yourself) spread it thin on a dishcloth, fold the dishcloth around your neck (Quark directly on your skin if you want to). The Quark will help you to cool down! Works a treat when you have inflamed joints to! My knees love Quarkwickel!
Donuts are always a good idea!
@@sisuguillam5109 I had no idea. I’m healing from an ankle injury and could definitely benefit from this. Plus the cool down in this heat. 🥵 Thank you!

Waaauuuh soon having these in 🇫🇮😋👍 & those are really easy to make 😊
They are!
Lucky you! How long are ya going over for?
For about two weeks
@@finnishyourplate Nice! I suspect those berries will be fine when ya get back. Be nice to go for a month, but depending on where you're headed, who wants to battle the skeeter army😂
Yeah, and it does get expensive too between lodging and food!
I worked a blueberry farm here in Grand Junction, MI, the largest producer of blueberries in Michigan. Come late June and July, look for clam shells with MBG Marketing on the cover and those are from my 'hood. Probably even from a farm right here in town. Enjoy! PS: Wash them and *Keep them cold*, below 45F.
Oh I definitely will check the growing location now!
I said "Mannapuurovertailu" out loud and now my computer is making strange noises wtf kind of spell was that
The only way to repel it is to say hölkynkölkyn three times in rapid succession in front of a mirror.
Are you really sure? "Pussikalja" is normally used by the peoplle whom to young to buy bear themself (someone give or bought them it). Juoksu kaljat ovat asia ihan erikseen. Please, try some OLVI-products, if there´s any avaivable in states...
Yeah you're right, and I guess pussikalja means just any beer that's carried in a plastic bag, doesn't it? Like for example if you are enjoying a beer on a picnic, but you bring the bottles in a plastic bag.
Pussikaljat ainaki tääl Turussa päin on aina meinannu sitä et käy kaupast hakemas vaa kaljat ja menee vaiks puistoo istumaa
I wouldn't say pussikalja means exactly under aged drinking, more like young people drinking outside during (hopefully)summer
Nice to see your "Cast" ORIgiNAl longdrin, since at least 1952. But have you ever tried OLVI-produvst?
Thanks! I have not tried them, they are not available in the US....
Yes!! I’ve been looking for a channel like yours. Excited to learn about Finnish food. 😃
Excellent thank you!
Wow that’s a feast! Who wouldn’t want to be invited to dinner? Awesome 😎
Thank you!
MHMMM buckthorn. Wish we had that in Slovakia near me.
You could probably order some products from Finland.
Thats not Orginal... Fake Lonkero
Sae buckthorn is such a great combo with lamb. Fantastic set of recipes, thanks 👌

It's a great place, and Mikko the Chef is such a nice person!
A beautiful meal presentation! We are fond of sea buckthorn and also elderflower... both the soda and the liqueur.
Yes, elderflower is definitely underappreciated.
A utensil that Mikko doesn't have -- that's a first :) Seriously, man, your kitchen is a flipping restaurant.
Haha thank you! I have a lot of cabinet space, but even still I can only fit so many things in my kitchen.
