      They are all the same! But, they are all different! 70s & early 80s boats were built for sailing, my boat is 87 & Catalina revised the overall inside of the hull to make the models user friendly & appealing, as did all the Mfgs at this time, & then many went out of business. Compare like models with the most stuff. Boat stuff is expensive so when it comes all ready there!!!! Where you’re talking about sailing the keel is # 1., you must study the good & bad keels first before looking.

      @@svwatercolors1291 Oh contrare! I have the Starwind 223 and the requestor is asking about sailing around the Keys. Since the Catalina has the weighted swing keel, it probably has better stability if a higher wind hits them. Starwind, even though its about 200 lbs heavier, has its ballast up by the hull and has a higher center of gravity and therefore will be more tender to breezes. Plus there is current driven waves around the south of Florida so extra stability for a trailer sailor would be advantageous. Keep the Starwind in the inner coastals unless Neptune is in a gentle mood. Otherwise one could have Poseidon adventure if seas get to a steep 6' height. You've got beautiful teak btw.

Honestly I bought it to distract me from the hurt but do intend to sail it before long. Life on the farm gets busy sometimes. I love your ideas of tongue extension, storage for rudder and mast support. Your ideas make it a lot easier to handle a boat without help from others especially at 69. Suscribed to your Channel. Hi! Thanks for the awesome videos! I have watched several. On you Catalina 22 trailer modification what was the tubing size and wall thickness you used? I have a MacGregor 22-2 and want to extend my tongue for launching but want to make sure that it is stout enough. I will reposition my axle to get the tongue weight in the 230 - 325# range for a 2300# trailer, so very similar to what you have. Thanks for your response and may God Bless you in your adventures.

    • @svwatercolors1291
      @svwatercolors1291 8 месяцев назад

      I would suggest buying the steel from a fabrication shop rather than from local hardware store or Lowes because the steel maybe of heavier material as well as maybe stronger not coming from China. The towing tube is 2” square, where a standard 2” trailer end will fit if perfectly, but the towing ball is only 1 7/8” for this size where your present trailer may be of a 2” size. Therefore you will need another receiver for your vehicle as I do, not shown in the video. The tube weight is a standard thickness at 4 feet long, it’s enough for light towing around in the parking lot. I would suggest a stronger thickness if your extension is going to be longer than 4 to 6 feet. The plate steel for holding this extension is 1/4 “ thick, all works great but the hinge part, on a redo I would make this park out of thicker material because of it bolt clamping to the trailer, I some times have to take a hammer and tap this part a few times to drive it toward the back of the trailer to align with the pin holes for final attachment before towing on the highway.

    Do you think putting one of those hitches that lowers the ball several inches on the tow vehicle, just for retrieval purposes, would lower the tongue of the trailer enough to get up under the bow?

    • @svwatercolors1291
      @svwatercolors1291 Год назад

      Yes, any lowering of the trailer’s tongue will help in leveling the trailer on the angled ramp. The trailer’s axle is the pivoting point on raising the back end of the trailer, because this distance is so short, a 3 inch drop at the hitch may only raise the back end a 1/4 of an inch. If your boat is not on the trailer, do the measurements, before spending the money on another receiver.

    • @soapbox94
      @soapbox94 22 дня назад

      @@svwatercolors1291 With a lower ball mount, you might scrape the bottom of the trailer at the top of the ramp where the flat parking lot transitions to the ramp. With my tongue extension out, and a 18.5" ball height, my trailer scrapes at my favorite ramp. Totally depends on the ramp grade/transition, but something to think of. Love the video. I'm fitting generic trailer to my C22WK right now and want to add a bow roller. Wish I saw this before I rebuilt the chock above and below the bow eye. D'oh!

    • @svwatercolors1291
      @svwatercolors1291 21 день назад

      @@soapbox94 You’re right about the angle height created going from parking lot to launch ramp. I need to add, and recommend some safety chains on the extension because I’ve witnessed an extension become unhooked at this ramp transition point, the boat and trailer rolling back down the ramp. The lower the hitch height at ramp helps in loading the hull because you reduce the ramp angle and the height the stern has to drop onto the trailer when pulled from the water.

    The teak on your boat in this video is beautiful. I am new to boats and my C-22 has been outside its entire life. All the teak is grey and rough to the touch. I understand how to sand, I think oiling the teak is a lot like staining wood as far as an application (I have never oiled teak), but after the teak oil, how do I get a shine and luster like the teak on your boat? What materials do I use and how much do I apply? Are the same materials used on the interior teak or something different?

  • @benkanobe7500

    For the companionway cover, are the battens (or the middle batten) designed to engage in the groove of the fixed companionway molding or do they stay proud of and across the outside edge of the fixed companionway molding?

    • @svwatercolors1291

      The batten at the very bottom is large and heavy so it keeps the canvas stretched vertical. The small center batten resting on the companionway frame keeps the cloth from being pushed inward by wind or water.

    My 1985 Catalina 22 did not come with an attached stern ladder. I want to purchase one but the choices are overwhelming. Important to me it that it folds down and can be pulled down with a line always attached and at water level. I imagine being overboard and needing to get out of the water. I would also like it to be easy to climb if I wanted to go for a swim at Anchor. Any suggestions?

    • @svwatercolors1291
      @svwatercolors1291 Год назад

      The stock Catalina ladder that came on my boat is wonderful; easy to swing down from it's folded position, easy to use when swimming and on a swing keel model folds down for ease of climbing aboard when the hull is on the trailer. It's more expensive than aftermarket models but the quality construction and functions I feel are worth the extra money. The stock motor mount is also far superior to other models, so I would recommend both these items to Cat and non-cat owners.

We stay at the State Park located on the deeper and wider end of the lake. We say stay, it's more like park the truck and pay for daily passes. We usually stay for 4 days and three nights on the lake rather than stay in the state campground area. We live about 30 miles from said lake in our 1885 Victorian house. We are just getting started for this season because I have been replacing the original 2 story tin roof. I do not know about the new trucks but a couple years ago, most had a rear axle breather tube attached to the underside of the bed directly overhead. So one could submerge the bed almost to the bed’s wheel wells and not cause possible water damage to the rear axle.

    This is an excellent video! I am new at sailboat trailering and have learned so much for your vast experience! Can’t wait to try some of your awesome techniques. I own a RL24 and hope to sail next season 😀

      I’m sorry, when I pulled my boat for the winter, I had planned to video every bit of it but, with other boats being pulled at the same time with issues I forgot to get the camera out of the tow vehicle.

    Your boat looks good. I can tell you've been working on that teak. These 22's may look slow from a distance but when you're on one in wind like this, it feels like a rocket ship 🚀😃

      My son keeps a sailboat on the Hudson River. A fellow power boater questioned him about the speed, how much fun is that? "My son said, I've raced motorcycles and going into a turn at 150 mph is the same rush I now get going 7 mph on a sailboat."
