Thanks for this great video. Really thankful for the tips about sail trim, watching the water and cautions. Sailed with my Dad in my late teens on an old planked, lead keel hull, 20' gaff rigged boat built in the 50's and miss those times. Wood boats are a lot of work for sure.

Your boat looks good. I can tell you've been working on that teak.
These 22's may look slow from a distance but when you're on one in wind like this, it feels like a rocket ship 🚀😃

My son keeps a sailboat on the Hudson River. A fellow power boater questioned him about the speed, how much fun is that? "My son said, I've raced motorcycles and going into a turn at 150 mph is the same rush I now get going 7 mph on a sailboat."

Nice Catalina.Single handing in that wind is a lot of work. I'm a 62 year old woman novice. And it is exciting. My 22 has bad weather helm if I don't have at least a little headsail out. Happy winds.

I believe the weather helm is a good thing on a 22 foot boat. It tells you that you're over powered and you need to de-power sail or reduce sail. If the helm is overpowering to the point where speed is reduced, let the helm go to it's neutral position for a couple seconds to keep boat speed then pull on the helm to steer back on course. Keep repeating till the puff subsides, then do the sail adjustments.

@@svwatercolors1291 Ok, thanks. Will try out your advice.

You can make a big adjustment in weather helm by raking the mast back about 8”. This will give you a little weather helm when sailing in heavy weather. Don’t forget to adjust the side stays when leaning the mast back.

@@svwatercolors1291 to reduce weather helm, let the main sheet down on the traveler. it will spill wind from sail. and, if you think you're going to encounter wind, reef the main. you'll still go fast. You and boat will be happier for it.

My 1985 Catalina 22 did not come with an attached stern ladder. I want to purchase one but the choices are overwhelming. Important to me it that it folds down and can be pulled down with a line always attached and at water level. I imagine being overboard and needing to get out of the water. I would also like it to be easy to climb if I wanted to go for a swim at Anchor. Any suggestions?

The stock Catalina ladder that came on my boat is wonderful; easy to swing down from it's folded position, easy to use when swimming and on a swing keel model folds down for ease of climbing aboard when the hull is on the trailer. It's more expensive than aftermarket models but the quality construction and functions I feel are worth the extra money. The stock motor mount is also far superior to other models, so I would recommend both these items to Cat and non-cat owners.

@@svwatercolors1291 Thank You. I really appreciate it. I replaced my stock original motormount plywood with the Catalina Direct plastic and stainless new style. I saw a ladder listed there but was not sure if it was the correct one. I will give them a call and see if the one they sell now is as yours is. My boat is a 85 Catalina 22.

Forgot about ladder. legs that push up against stern, the rubber feet only last a couple years. I replaced mine many times over the years with Hardware Store variety's!

may i suggest having reef line come back to cockpit. safer that way.

You are correct about reefing to the cockpit, I have everything else run there. Maybe twice a season we have winds over 20 mph here in central Pennsylvania and with a hank on jib I can handle 22 mph winds with full main so, I have never considered it a priority to do single line reefing.
