Morel told me the max oil viscosity I could run was 15-40 with their “street” lifters on the Bullet cam that has about .565” lift on a 335 series. Do you see future issues? It isn’t noisy and it’s a iron block and heads

    • @lykinsmotorsports

Damn it! That customer needs a lesson of trust and respect. For almost 25 years, I've had to have the talk with EVERY client about "cheating on me". " "Trust me to deliver what you asked for. If I don't I'll make it right at my expense, and if at that time your eyes and ears start to wander, I'll understand." I've had 1 and only 1 cheat on me, and I didn't take him back when he second guessed me for another shop. It wasn't out of spite.....principal. A lot of time, money, and heart go into some builds.....ah, sorry for the rant

Nor dealing with .Well done to take it back and move it on. I agree with you about cam selection, I have built a few small block fords & had my last 347 Clevor built by an awesome engine builder here in Australia. In my very limited experience building 302 s, the off- the- shelf cams from Comp and Crane both performed in the rpm range that the manufactures claimed but I think that was mostly because my mild to moderate 302s built with traditional parts were what they knew most people would be using the cams in and then like you said, for conveniences sake, listed other engine sizes that the cam would physically work in even though just the cubic-inch differences would alter the power delivery. In my career as a Harley tech I have seen ample evidence of just the things you talk about shifting the power-bands of cams around, sometimes just a different set of pipes would add another 500 rpm worth of power on the top-end or running a bigger cam in a stock compression motor could take that amount away at the lower end.

Great video as always 👍 I've always known to take the " powerband rpm range" as a guess. I have been trying to decide on a cam stroker build and been doing research. I've been looking at what similar "dyno'd" builds were using. Problem is that info/ example builds are few and far between ( stroker magnum SB Mopar). The cam companies don't even bother replying.. it just sad. A question for you, if you don't mind. How much Overlap (hyd.roller) would you consider "a safe Max" to run Power brakes on a daily driver? 390ci, RPM airgap, TFS 190cc , 10.5cr.

I ran them in a few different builds. 400 Ford and a Cleveland. 400 gained 4 inches of vacuum. On purpose I never removed the distributor when I changed lifters. They were a bit noisy but I didn’t care. No worse than the solid cam that’s in the 400 now.

A long story. I have a 452 cu. in FE with Edelbrock heads. They have 2.26/1.75 valves with 3/8 valve stems. When I first built the motor many years ago, CompCams had just introduced their HR cams for FE and HR lifters. The peanut gallery was saying the lifters collapse or the valve float at mild rpm. I called CompCams and asked them what there testing showed, and they said: "We don't test every setup." I was distressed by this and the swapped me out a Street Roller solid cam and lifters. I changed the valve springs and the engine made over 550 hp. That cam has been in the car over 10 yrs. That cam was 245/254. 0.64/0.65. on a 110 LCA. I recently rebuilt the motor and examined the roller lifters. Fortunately, they were fine. The cam you have would be considered mild for a BBF. A lot has changed since then. Your customer should have taken you advice. That's what he pays you for. Sorry about your Ram. I have to kid you about having a Ram. A Ford guy should know better. 🙂

Very good information about cam manufacturer catalogs. In the 1970's and 1980's I ran a speed shop and probably explained that same information at least 5 times a week to guys wanting to buy a cam. Also, many of those customers wanted to pick the nastiest cam at the bottom of the page. They didn't understand that their low compression, small cubic inch engine with stock heads pulling a 4000-pound car with 2:56 gears and a stock converter wasn't going to be able to get out of its own way. Plus, they wouldn't make enough vacuum to run power brakes. Often, they were more concerned about how it sounded! Also, cam technology and valve spring quality weren't what they are now. I worked on an NHRA super stock Camaro That set national records and was the national champion in 1980. We replaced valve springs every 20 passes and checked tension about every 5 passes. We didn't know anything about lobe intensity, and spintrons didn't exist.

@@lykinsmotorsports.....truck month. That's when to buy "retail". That's, 99% of the time, the only time you can walk in and get close to invoice. Now "D-Dlan" eligible buyers, invoice, plus rebates, plus dealer hold-back....that turns a $100k truck into $60k real quick. RAM trucks, gas or diesel, are better buys today than 20 years ago. I worked for FoMoCo for 17 years, and I can't believe what they're listing these trucks at. My 2016 5.0 F150 Supercab has 400k on the original engine and transmission. I beat on it daily. The most major repair has been an oil pan gasket and the valve cover replacements. Penzoil Platinum every 4k miles, fuck the computer and the logarithm, plugs every 60k, preventative and scheduled maintenence with OEM(not Motorcraft) parts......at 500k she gets a Whipple. If she sees 600k....new long block and OEM transmission.
