Medi-Cal is a problematic program wherein the State of California can pretend to have provided coverage for people without accomplishing more than the appearance. There are VERY limited numbers of servicers, and many of those listed are not accepting new patients. This is particularly true of the Dental program. Then there's the stigma attached to using medi-cal. You will be likely be treated like a third-class citizen; not to your face, but in terms of the processing of service and the quality of care. Think it won't happen? Then why is the state mailing complaint registration forms in every single communication. Recently, they sent out a "consult a nurse" card (By law, nurses are very restricted in the medical advice they can offer) to put on a fridge; it was sent out with complaint registration forms. You will receive so many that they will quickly outweigh the member handbook. Add to this the constant contract disputes between the insurer and the clinic/hospital which provides medi-cal service, or the fact that the program seems to be continuously switching providers for pharmaceutical coverage, or the fact that the state stripped 5% of the county health services budget to address homelessness (but only for very specific locations, *cough* Los Angeles *cough* and consider this: California has spent just under 24 Billion on homelessness in the last 5 years; the vast majority without any record keeping *cough* Los Angeles *cough*. The money went... no one knows). You may receive mail stating that due to a switch of provider, you lack coverage for some services for certain periods of time. Let's round that off with a lack of communication between the various state entities and your county, or even each other, which can make it hard to know if you are actually covered or not. Finally, we'll top it with a bunch of pretty websites which tell you virtually nothing in many different languages. Here's the thing: if you qualify for a program, but cannot actually use it, how much good is it doing? Is it better than nothing? Sure. But I couldn't really say how. Like when you're driving in the rain, and you turn off the wipers for a second to see if it makes a difference, and it does - it actually does get worse; it just doesn't get any better when you turn them back on. That's Medi-Cal.
