What material are the sandals made of? Plastic? Nylon?
Polypropylene.
I haven't heard of this place and always bought mine from a place for the past 25 years I wanna say. They are all I wear. Even had jobs I could wear them to. Particularly boat repair work last 8 or 9 years. When I go out, they are what I'm wearing. It never ceases to amaze people, or friends that see how often someone always comments on them. ("I like those sandals." " I Iove them."Jesus sandals.") Born and raised in FL so even during the winter they are what I wear. Shoes and other sandals always wear out far faster. As an artist, I also enjoy working with my hands. I have yet to make my own pair, but it's nice to be able to fix them. ~Panzik Artistry
They are fantastic water shoes. Very cool, thanks for sharing!
When people choose voluntarily live together in a community such as this, it can work. When you force socialism on a country, it does not work and never will. Good on you all for your peaceful existence.
The state, in whatever form, always forces itself upon the people.
@@EastWindCommunity1973 that is government's job - to get in a man's way. Socialism however, is one of the worst forms when forced on a captive population. You guys are different - you choose it and voluntarily work together. I would bet from time to time someone feels stepped on there as well. Do not get me wrong - I think your community is great, and I am glad it works. I seriously considered a two-week trial with you many years ago with a friend of mine after reading about you in National Geographic. I enjoy hard work, teamwork, as well as peace and serenity. Best of luck to you.
7:05 that's my husband Chris, lol. He said, he spent alot time in the kid's building. When I met him he was the manager at an Ashram in Taos. Now he is the CEO of a YMCA still playing with kids.
Wow, very cool! Thanks for sharing.
I went to East Wind once. They were making sandals, hammocks, rope swings, etc. I liked it. My wife and I are in our 70s now and not very productive physically. So I don’t think we’d fit in there now.
You could certainly visit!
best nut butters <3
I would love to live here
You're a smart guy, and respect to you for working to make the commune a better place.
I just sent in an application to visit today. Hoping being 48 doesn’t hurt. I’m still in shape and don’t look old and down for physical or any other work that is needed by the community. I’m accepting of all different kinds of people and laid back. I wonder how open the community would be to that.
See if it is a good fit, have fun!
Love the content ❤
This video ist great! I love how she does the cheese in this natural way.
Living IN KC right now so not far. Interested in more
Is he a comrade or a comic rade? He is like a comic character from the world of fantasies.
I wish more people knoew about them.
I visited there in 87 and stayed in the one of the rooms in Fen shen or something like that I remember Yohanan and fixing all the bicycles and the joy that it brought and for some reason I also remember a fellow named phthhhhhhhst but can't remember why and of course Tom who I've seen a time or to at the national gatherings and Debbie who I believe complained about my vegetarian meal I had made only because it was Vegan, at the time I was a bit over zealous with my idea of what a person should eat I left the day after the celebration for Groundhogs Day and have told many of my East Wind experience it's nice to see the community is still chugging along ! Many blessings to you all and may peace be with you !!!
That's great, thanks for sharing =)
Hello, I actually have my visit set up at eastwind thanks to your videos.
Have a good time!
Is there any more up-to-date videos I’m very interested Communal living
No, I no longer live at East Wind.
@@EastWindCommunity1973 OK thank you I was willing to help but I’m looking for a place where I can help rebuild from scratch and start over thank you anyway I look for another communal living
Still out there, Sumner?
Oh yeah, always around.
Can't see my comment but can I have an email or discord? Old comrade wanting to discuss something with you that might be interesting
Documenting this kind of stuff is so important. American pioneers! I’m so intrigued by the whole system and the place sounds special, but I’m deterred by how much the alcoholism seems to be an issue and the stories about assault. Being around blackout drunk men with no locks on my doors may be too much for me.
Yea, it can get bad at times. There are lots of communities out there! Twin Oaks has a similar system and a more family friendly environment. Thanks for sharing =)
The life of bumps, what a trip to know the bumps of others , we are all alike , just poor struggling egos, seeking self identity, not knowing our very inner souls cry out from this self made hell for freedom and peace, Yet the communal experiment is a portal to walk into a new utopia, and seek the good harmony without the dark machine, dictating to our minds, we must be what they dictate, to the head. the evil of the Matrix. We march on united of course!!!!!!! divided we shall fall into the dark void of the quagmire the world represents and lives, We are the Free people of the earth, but yet as I write the struggle to live our freedom is in check, as the Machine closes in to swallow, the weak and uncool, Be Cool is the rally cry, Be Cool, seek the good karma, , live the harmony, I love you Eastwind , may the sacred wind be merciful to you and all. I love you my fellow brothers and sisters , Stay united!!!!!!!!! Onward to the utopia, of our forfathers!!! love vic ono
Hello!! I lived at Eastwind for 2 years in the early 2000s. With Sorrel and his daughter! He is a very kind personality and very calm to be around.
Aww, that is great. I really enjoyed talking with him. It was actually Halloween (and he would get up and go hand out candy every now and then) and we had a lot of back and forth that wasn't in the video, he seems awesome! Thanks for commenting =)
I've loved your series documenting life at ew. For some of us it is a memory we have pushed down. And your documenting reminds me of the great times that were had. I unfortunately entered into a toxic relationship and left with that person who encompassed my world for many years.
This interests me, a lot. The world is not in a good place right now.
Wow, such a fantastic video. I'd love to know more about the business side of things. I really like your edginess. It sometimes feels that intentional communities are poster children for the Democratic Party. I don't get that at all from you. Just to be clear, I'm not a conservative or liberal, not a member of either Dems or GOP. Anyway, I hope you stick it out and make East Wind something future Americans read about with awe and wonder.
That was a very informative and well assembled video. I think you gave a good representation of what life and such a community is like. Perhaps it was more obvious to me because These communities have been on edge of my sphere for the last 25 years through people I've met, Short visits, Phone calls and other videos. You jam a lot into that video. Once I adjusted to your cadence I could follow it all clearly. I am talking your personal journey and not the community/Business overview Except where they intersected. Couple things. I would lead with, "don't take this personally", but we all know that is a sign for potential danger ahead. Darn. I just said it. Anarchy. In the last couple years I heard a great Definition for such. When two, or more entities or people make an agreement to do something outside the parameters of the governing system where they live. It's only been in the last year, that I realize all the elected officials have been participating in their lives as anarchists according to this definition since before George Washington was elected. When questioned about their actions they Stonewall or get their conspirators to say they are doing nothing wrong. I have been saying for 20+ years that the people are going to have to lead because the leaders or not. Sadly I don't know how that's going to happen. However the cash grab of elected officials from Podunk town council members to the highest offices in the country have formed their own clique. Then they all go along, to get along. This iscontrary to what they've sworn to do when elected. The two major political parties participation in this is equal. Now we get to what Aldous Huxley said about corporate totalitarianism. Great quote. Doing this on the phone voice text and I don't remember it verbatim but it is easy to find. Then Dwight Eisenhower wanted to say military industrial congressional complex. But he was convinced to exclude Congress with lots of pressure from various camps. I wonder if when he got to the Bardo he regretted that? Anyway I May not be that clear on my assembly of Thoughts here, but I hope you can cobble them together for clarity. You seem the sort that speaks fluent typo and disjointedness. So that really didn't require much of a warning sign. The one that does is when you apologize for the Clickbait title implying the land in Tennessee. I'm not giving you a free pass on that. Just live with it, you already did it. Do better in the future. I hope we all do better in the future. That way we might not collapse as soon as it appears we may. If you like let me know what you think! Thanks
Not sure what you mean about the title. Any map I've ever seen has the Ozarks in MO, AR, OK and a small bit in KS. Definitely wasn't implying anything about TN. I don't think any part of the Ozarks is in TN, unless you count the edges I suppose. Yeah, life is an experience to learn from. I've benefited greatly from my time at East Wind. Better than making some rich assholes richer, perhaps. I don't worry about collapse, we are far in it and it will continue to get worse at an increasing pace. All the best to you. At another venture in Japan, as we speak, haven't quite settled down yet.
I thought your comment, 4 1/2 years on the farm, was in the title. Hence my remark. I was wrong. I tried to edit it out of my comment just now. However the technology available to me it's not allowing me to do such. It is Likely operator error or I haven't paid the machine enough money to get their latest operating system. I will continue to try to edit that out I was hoping that we weren't too far gone. All the best to you as well.
I visited East wind in 87 I think it was I did a bit of work just about everywhere except the sandals I remember a few folks but most of all was Johanin who at the time was the" roaster" for the famous and delicious nut butter. Anyway I do have fond memories of East wind and have always thought of it as a model for community.
Very cool, thanks for sharing!
This is a really great film. Enjoyed it. Thinking about checking this out. Are there any people in their 60’s?
Yes, and older.
What happened to the sandals trailer?
Storage, might be gone by now, though!
I’m so curious could a Canadian join?
Yes, some French have joined, why not a Canuck?!
Wow, it's a shame this was so dang hard to hear! Good interview though, and very thorough, made me want to replay parts several times to try to understand because the content was that interesting :)
Oh, I didn't realize it was that incomprehensible at points. I included text only in the parts I thought it was necessary. Maybe I should include more. Thanks for commenting!
@@EastWindCommunity1973 it could also just be i am doing this at work while listening to plucky video game music and there's the constant drone of building regulation systems. IRONIC!! They could have made the building totally passive! :D
This is amazing. LEF is a huge inspiration, and ever since the community tour there, I've been thinking about their passive climate control technology, solar cooking, etc. and their dream of making everything they do available to the most people. It's wonderful to know more about the details of how it stays on in the 2020s. Thank you!
Yes, trying to figure that out in the urban context can be difficult! I've been trying...
Sumner, phenomenal job thank you for sharing this content. I deeply appreciate it.
Thanks!
Does DC electricity have a ground? Like a stake into the ground with a wire connected to it
You can ground a DC circuit, like any circuit. The 12V battery systems don't have a ground, as 12V can't do much damage, even if it goes across your chest (120V can kill someone going across the chest, but not always). I am unsure of exactly how the higher voltage (180V) DC system is grounded. You can ask on their youtube channel for them to answer directly.
Do they have double glazing on the windows? They don't have any connection to the grid if I understand correctly?
I believe all the windows are double glazed, yes. No grid connection, no fossil fuel back up.
Well, to be a bit nitpicky internet access is a "grid" whether you access it via satellite or cable. But it makes sense why that might be the one "grid" to be connected to. Sewage would be my biggest question. It's not always safe to dig latrines, flooding for example can spread it into the watershed, any larger amount of human waste requires treatment to be safe for the environment. It's not recommended to compost it if you want to use that compost for growing food, for example. You might be able to fertilize grass/grain which feeds your livestock though, maybe? I'm very curious!
Where do u find the roll of fuzzy rope
As an outsider who is associated with an urban intentional community I really enjoy these videos and the glimpse of life they provide into other communities :)
BIG TIME MISSIN Y'ALL
I visited Twin Oaks for 3 weeks when I was 18. I was too young to commit at the time with the mindset I had. But as odd as it is your documentary here makes me want to try again and for real this time at 25 years of age.
Cool, maybe I'll see you down there. I've been hanging around Louisa County quite a bit this year. Tuesday frisbee is the best!
@@EastWindCommunity1973Are you still hanging around VA?
I visited there at 18 too. Twin Oaks that is. But that was 50 years ago! There are many forms of community of course. Ecovillages that are not completely income sharing and communities that are vegetarian, mixed age, little ror no substance use, etc. are options that interest me now. Also communities with less primitive sanitation are available, if that's an issue for anyone.
I use to steal Deborah's beer when I was a teenager, good times
Haha, good times! If you ever want to chat about it, send me an email: sumneroftheozarks@gmail.com
How do more introverted types fare at East Wind?
I think it all depends. There are introverted people at East Wind. If you can be patient and make it through the visitor period I think you would meet some friends. Avoiding the drinking scene and working with people would be the best way (for example: Richard in the garden!!).
0:00 Intro 1:25 involvement in communities movement since 1985 1:49 introduction to Living Energy Farm 2:31 embracing behavioral changes that match the systems they use, ‘Amish without the patriarchy’ (Sumner didn’t mean to put down the Luddites) 7:16 thermal systems, insulation, electrical systems, motors, DC microgrid 11:11 efficiencies of group living, village context, rich homesteader trends 13:40 political dimension to living off grid, importance of personal empowerment 15:33 what is needed to found more communities like LEF? 17:12 Outreach work to Puerto Rico, the Southwest, etc. 21:35 born outside Savannah, GA into a very religious family
The dramas mentioned in this video are intense. ub's personal view is special. Bravi Sumner & ub, thanks for an earnest and deep view with some ups and downs.
I understand shedding the people pleasing bit, for sure. Healing that trauma myself. But! I actually enjoyed cleaning in my community a bit. Kinda tranquil.
Cleaning is great. Love doing dishes and making things clean! Only for a couple hours at a time, however (and not at 3AM if I can help it)!!
@@EastWindCommunity1973 Yes! On board with those. Also, it helped me that the accountability wasn't "breathing down my neck at any given moment" but more like a checklist to be turned in and checked by someone in charge of accountability.
These interviews are valuable in many ways. I hope to see lots more.
Thanks, glad you are enjoying them. Reach out via email if you would like to be interviewed (your other comment inferred you had lived there for some amount of time).
Yes, EW can be a mirror, and I learned how my dysthymia negatively impacted the way I dealt with unreasonable people. Also, I came away with the belief that such a high percentage of humanity is dysfunctional that a place such as East Wind is destined to be full of drama and harassment. The high turnover shows us that most people won't accept those things. (I think communities with smaller populations and a better way to select members is the way to go.)
I feel pretty certain that I met these people at Acorn about 20 years ago. I kinda didnt really get the point - diy off grid but not necessarily in a widely replicable way imo?
Tomas . . . wasnt he at EW? or am i confused
@@caraziegel7652 I'm not sure about Tomas. What about their systems is not widely replicable? Only places with very little sunlight would not be able to use solar ovens, the solar battery setup, etc. Of course, good building design, living in a cohousing or village context, etc. improves efficiency no matter where you are.
@@EastWindCommunity1973 lets just say i dont see wide adoption - not because its not possible but because its not going to appeal to most people in developed countries.
@@caraziegel7652 Yes, most definitely true! I believe that is why they are now focused on people who would be more receptive to change. I think the changes to a more sustainable life will only happen out of necessity... and that could be rough for many (very much an understatement).
