Alpkit ULTRA Bikepacking Tent Review
Nice tent. The MSR Hubba NX Bikepack is one I would recommend though. More solid inner tent material and you can hang the clothes inside during the night.
✌️
The best weather is in the winter!!!!!😉
Pelago Stavanger is a quite versatile gravel bike. Especially because of its steel frame. Unloaded it is a very stable ride. Love it and hope it will last forever ❤️
Gravel this 👎🏾👎🏾👎🏾🦨
Thanks for this useful comparison.
Tom, do you manage to fit a sleeping bag in those panniers?
great video - thanks. I was just looking at potentially upgrading my topstone 1 (2021) but now, no need.... just a few mod cons.
It’s a good concise and quite informative summation of the pros and cons of each. I have cycled toured over 20,000 kms and bike packed around 5000 and have both a touring ( Surly) and gravel bike ( Marin ) which I use for trips less than a week or ten days. Multi week trips need a touring bike unless one plans to be sleeping extensively in motels etc.
Great video, thanks! I have a Specialized Gravel bike in carbon frame and I was wondering if I could use it for bikepacking/touring. I feel a little better knowing that it IS capable.
Congratulations, I hope you are finding joyful moments among the challenges. We look forward to your return when the time is right 😊. All the best
Gravel bikes just look cool? I disagree, depends on the steel tourer! Steel tourers are heavier because the tubes are thicker and stiffer so when you load the thing up it doesn't feel like a noodle. The weight of the bike is negligible once you've thrown your body and bags on.
02:50 "in terms of size, this is a really spacious tent". Sorry, but no, it isn't. 5'11", can't sit up in this tent. Good video otherwise, & I realise you mention headroom in an 'only just enough' kind of way. I'm only commenting to make sure no one else drops £300 on this thinking they're going to be able to sit and cook, eat etc - if you're over about 5'9" then that's not happening. There was no display model of this tent in my local Alpkit, & this review actually informed my purchase. Returning mine as it's too cramped.
XC (cross-country) MTB for me, light, fast, but most of all you can ride it anywhere, contrary to gravel bikes, and also in very steep places the gearing is much easier, not to mention that the suspension makes you go much faster on rough descents and on the rough flat
I just returned from a month cycling trip and now confused as I don’t know whether I toured, bike packed or just cycled ?
Damn vid made me fall asleep for 3hrs without even realising
i using trekking bike cicling around australia
Best part about that tent is the drab color. For people who really adventure tour, being conspicuous in a neon tent is a liability. Big Agnes would have the market if they could keep improving what they had rather than keep switching gimmicky plastic for the sake of change. The seedhouse sl2 coulda been the perfect tent if they'd just keep improving and lightening. A freestanding tent is worth a couple extra ounces. Simplify, lighten, improve. Instead they added gimmicks for the sake of change.
Touring bikes👍
Nice set up..
Nice touring bicycle setup. I prefer using a Burly Nomad trailer and front panniers. I like how my bike handles with a two wheel trailer. My travels take place on both paved and gravel roads.
Really great video, thanks for sharing. Hopefully will be going to do something similar on La Palma in a few weeks so was great to see so much detail. Might ping you for some more tips! :)
I use my Trek 520 touring bike for touring, commuting and gravel ridding. I got it on my cross country bicycle tour when my aluminum specialized tricross bike got a crack in the fram causing severe mechanical issues on the road. Aluminum is good for cheap light weight performance but not long term heavy touring. I have to give credit to steal frame touring bikes for their excellent longevity.
I think both bikes are good for bike packing. Like you I got a mountain bike for rough terrain touring. This keeps my gravel touring bike from getting ruined for the longer haul highway tours. Right tool for the job is the moto I follow. Excellent video.
Touring bikes are the best option.
kislux versace bag is so cute
Touring bike looks cooler than the gravel bike.
I love my 1040 but buying the solar opton was a mistake. Solar dims screen and is pointless as most rides are early morning with the group..... not much sun
Which front rack are you using (I'm looking for one that's compatible with a SR Suntour suspension for on a Surface 604 Shred)?
What a fantastic effort. Can I ask how much was the route on road vs. off road. Would love to do this but currently only ride a road bike, so I assume this route would be more for a gravel bike.
Hi just to know how does your rear suspension work with this system?
Hey Tom - absolutely, you should be taking a break! You have a lot going on and I know it takes a bit time commitment doing the trips and then assembling and editing the videos. Make it as long as possible so that you can feel invigorated to be back enjoying your cycling, get the renovation finished and enjoy the two kids. Cheers.
Great trip and lovely video….I’ve done a lot of cycling on Mull and noticed you seemed to have landed lucky with so little traffic on the road to Mull. There is an off-road alternative, which involves a hike-a-bike, following the beach footpath.
I tour on a cube fat bike and a mtb
Luggage and terrain will tilt the scale. 😌
Touring is not about going faster. Touring bikes are built to carry heavy loads, over long distances. This means they come with bearings that will last a lot longer. Touring bikes are versitile, I use mine everyday. Carbon fibre is way to delicate, and difficult to repair. Titanium too rigid and very difficult to 'weld on the road'. Long distance touring requires carrying your home, for maybe three years. Only possible with a touring bike. Touring bikes and butterfly bars are super cool. Yes, I have toured a lot. In excess of 300, 000 kms.
I recently purchased a Jamis Renegade gravel bike. With 20 frame mounts, it can easily be used for bike packing or touring. To accommodate either gravel rides or road tours, I have two wheel sets, making this bike amazingly versatile.
A key topic not specifically addressed is comfort. I have a Bianchi steel touring bike with carbon handlebars and stem and a B17 Brooks saddle. It is easy on my body on a long ride--much easier than a stiffer gravel bike frame with a more aggressive geometry would be. Another topic missed is commuting. Because touring bikes are outfitted with all kinds of weather in mind, they make good commuter bikes--plenty of storage, fenders to keep you dry enough for work, excellent lights in case you have to work late, tires wider than racing bikes' but designed for the streets. As for looks, I think most touring bikes aren't all that flashy looking; this reduces them as priority theft targets. Flashier bikes are easier to fence. If your commuter parking space is outdoors or in an easy to access bike room, less flash is a good thing. It seems to me that gravel bikes are good for off-road touring and rec riding, which doesn't make them more versatile than the tourer/commuter bike. One caveat re: touring bikes. As much as I enjoy bikepacking, I can't seem to get away as often as I would like. My bike, now 27 years old and riding great, has 10 times as many commuting miles than it has touring miles. I'm thinking that the term should be commuter/touring bike rather than the other way.
Do you think a Camino would serve as a suitable multi-purpose bike for road audax, gravel audax, and general gravel rides? (Possibly having two wheelsets to choose from according to the terrain).
While you are cycling, would be interesting to let us know where you are.
1x gearing is crap.
I did Selby to Hornsea, then back to Hull (for the train) yesterday. You’re right about the part between Humber and Hull, it’s a bit of a rat race navigating through the many turns you need to take. I did it on a mountain bike but some of the Hornsea rail trail is still a bit rough. I might try the tpt to York next.
If the price is a problem to you then wait for 20% discounts REI has. I remember they give it in May and sometime in Winter maybe even more often.
The variety of textures in the kislux pack is impressive. From smooth leather to textured suede, there's something for everyone.
Wishing you and your family well
Shoot, my Marin 4 Corners is cool. Looks cool, rides cool. The most comfortable bike I own. Without racks and bags, most would think it’s a gravel or cyclocross bike. It’s a bit “ponderous” compared, and yet way more comfortable than my carbon road bike. With 30mm Conti 4000’s it’s a joy to lay down miles.
En el momento en que vi el bolso kislux , supe que tenía que tenerlo.

Ahhhh! I can practically smell winter and this makes me miss it so much (I might actually get murdered for saying this). You were incredibly lucky with the weather and the aurora the days you visited. Generally I suggest staying a bit longer and renting a cheaper place cause the weather's not always this nice and it's very unpredictable. I just wanna put it out there; Tromsø is incredibly light polluted, now more than ever before. Only when you leave town and the suburbs will you have a proper aurora sighting :) 10:11 It's pronounced something a-la Kvaloyvaagen Anyway gorgeous filming and really well put together! Thank you!
Take a break. Great idea. We all need them. Your life is transitioning. Family first, we are always here for you when you come back. Maybe even try and film new things, family trips, backpacking, a day in the life etc. Change can be a break too when you are ready. But fir now, be and remain well. All the best.
Good luck to you mate, life is very busy
