    Just read Pushkin's "Eugene Onegin". His poetic descriptions of the seasons are so beautiful. Could you make a recommendation for what else I should read by Pushkin?

    • @bookishtopics
      @bookishtopics 3 дня назад

      Sure! If you prefer poetry, try Ruslan and Ludmila. It's like a fairy tale in verse. In Russia, we read it in school and I loved it. I also like his prose. Dubrovsky (his last unfinished work), The Captain's Daughter is his historical novel dedicated to the peasant uprising under Pugachev, he spent a lot of time researching for it. And I also love his Tales of Belkin which are love stories. I hope it helps! :) Enjoy your reading :)

    I also don’t like how grim the Penguin Black spines look on my shelves, so I try to keep them at a minimum. But sometimes they seem to have the best translations, so I’ll go for them anyway. I also tape the edges to keep them better intact.

    Wonderful list! This year a few novels I want to read are- The Magic Mountain, The Manuscript Found in Saragossa, Dombey and Son, also Elective Affinities. I have added the Bunin book to my list as well now! Also.. some more early works of Turgenev and Dostoevsky in the original language. Maybe первая любовь..

    Сновым годом!! Currently, I am finishing the audiobook version of "Vita Nostra", which I really liked even though I don't usually read fantasy. I am also finishing reading Willa Cather's "O Pioneers!" which, like a lot of Cather is a historical fiction "slice of life" book and has been a good counterbalance to the more intense "Vita Nostra". This year I hope to finish my rereading of David Copperfield (I stopped at a sad part about 6 months ago and never got back to it). I would also like to finally finally read War and Peace, which I have started, liked, and then stopped reading maybe 3 times already. I will probably have to restart War and Peace from the beginning, but "David Copperfield" I will just start where I left off. Glad you are back on RUclips!

    This year, I want to read Life and Fate by Vasily Grossman. It's one of my mother's favorite books of all time and I'm really looking forward to reading it. But it's so big, I've been pushing it back for 2 years now. I also want to pick back up Doris Lessing's saga Children of violence. But again, five big books and I have to reread the first two. In top of that, I'd like to read it in english which is not my first language.

    What interesting reads, Tanya. It will be really great if you talk about Otohiko Kaga's book in vlogs with spoilers too since it is not translated into English and even less into my native language, Spanish😔 Some of the books I plan to read this year are The Count of Monte Cristo by Dumas, Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf, The American by Henry James and continuing with Agatha Christie whom I discovered for the first time last year😊

    • @bookishtopics
      @bookishtopics 20 дней назад

      I'm still not sure about the English translation of Kaga Otohiko's book. The one that I showed called Marshland is also about 800 pages in English and it's also something about Tokyo in the first half of 20th century. Could be the same book, just with a different translation of the title. I really don't know, but I'll for sure make some kind of video about this book this way or another :) Good luck with your TBR! You've got great books there!

    • @carolinabho
      @carolinabho 20 дней назад

      I was checking Wikipedia in Japanese (and translating with Google🤭) and I saw that they are two different books. "Marshland" is from 1985 while "Burning City" is from 1996 and apparently is part of a trilogy called "Eternal City" composed of "Crossroads"(1988), "Dark Forest" (1991) and "Burning City" (1996) and published in 7 volumes . By the way, I don't know Japanese so these translations may be very far from the original. But anyway, I hope you enjoy reading it a lot 📖❤️

    I love hearing about which Russian books you plan to read. After hearing about Ivan Bunin, I added _The Life of Arseniev_ to my long-term reading list. The books I plan to read this year are Alan Myers's translation of _The Idiot_ by Dostoevsky (last year I read Ignat Avsey's marvelous translation), _Kolyma Stories_ by Varlam Shalamov, _The Master and Margarita_ by Mikhail Bulgakov, _Blood Meridian_ by Cormac McCarthy (I highly recommend his book _The Crossing), and War and Peace_ by Tolstoy.

    Hi, Tanya. One of my reading goals is a small project I call “A Blast from My Past”. It’s just four books. I will read two books that I have had since I was a teenager (fifty years ago) but have not read yet. Additionally, I will reread two books that I haven’t read since those days. Right now I’m rereading _The Goblin Reservation_ by Clifford D. Simak, a science fiction tale with a bunch of quirky characters. I last read that one in high school.

    This book aged well. Yes, the characters are absurd, but that made the book ahead of its time. When read parallel with high-modernism exaggeration, the book reads better than what the critics of its time could understand (and even what Dostoevsky could give credit for). The book is a fantastic feat of the imagination that tests what is possibly human (even if that was an accident).

My favourite book was actually a Japanese novel "A True Novel" by Minae Mizumura. Slightly reminded me of the "Makioka Sisters" but more complicated. Great portrayal of all the characters in early and mid XX century in Japan. I think you would like it. It's supposed to be a re-telling of Emily Brontë's "Wuthering Heights" in postwar Japan but thankfully I could barely see it, so don't worry.

      I really liked The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro, it took me by surprise! I also re-read Secret History by Donna Tartt ( love it!) And Anna Karenina which is my absolute favourite. In fact I just got a copy of Anna Karenina in Russian ( studied Russian in school for 4 years and I thought since I know the plot quite well it would be a good exercise to practice the language again). I also liked On the Beach by Nevil Shute, albeit it is very depressing...!
