So imagine if the count married Mercedes and made Haydee of his lover like Julius Caesar despite being married to Calpurnia, he had an affair with Cleopatra. The film Julius Caesra with Jeremy Sisto and Richard Harris playing Dictator Sulla, shows Calpurnia feeling humiliated upon learning about the affair between Caesar and Cleopatra.

I appreciate the humor, but the book really did seem to have some elitist perspectives that I'm not a fan of. I can see why it was censored. Comparing the working class to a dog is not cool. Without them those privileged "true laborers" would have nothing. Also the socialists didn't set the classes against each other, the old system had already set them against each other, or there would have been no need for the revolution. If the people weren't "ready", blame the tsar and the previous ruling classes, not the communists. And rich people don't work hard, they exploit hard lol. The kulaks were hoarding grain during a famine. The revolution didnt fail, it really did modernize the country, gave unprecedented rights to women and workers, turned a backwards agricultural pseudo medieval nation into an industrialized superpower, and spread literacy. Most people couldnt read under the tsarist regime. You talk about giving the proletariats freedom as if them being denied freedom was somehow "natural" and thats fucked up. There's no non artificial way to free your country from a ruling class, it has to be a revolution

Sister, it is a xenophobic book, equivalent to the disgraceful American cowboy films that depict the Native Americans as savages, and only the one who betrays his people and allies with the whites as somewhat noble. The Russians were brutal occupiers and invaders, whereas the Muslims were simply defending themselves. The book tries to make the good side look bad - it is disgraceful, especially since it is maligning real (and oppressed) human beings, albeit in a "fictional" manner.

I was assigned this book for school when I was 12 years old, to be read over the summer between 6th and 7th grade here in the U.S. I was way too young for it, and struggled a LOT, because up to that point, I had only been reading children’s books. My mother had to hire a tutor to help me and I still never finished it. I started my 7th grade English class already behind. I’ve been carrying around this “trauma” ever since (I’m now 56), and I plan to give it another try now as an adult. I am also about to finish my bachelor’s degree in English (concentration in Literature), so it seems appropriate. Your enthusiasm for the book is infectious!

Just finished reading this book for the first time. I’m so happy to find someone who feels so sorry for Hareton when he gets ridiculed about his illiteracy. The scene made my heart wrench. I cried later in the story when they forgive each other and started reading books together. How wonderful to see a hint of love and hope in education and books after all those mistreatment of everything and everybody. The characters in the story are horrible people, but I can’t but love this book. It is so different from what I usually like in stories but it has unforgettable colors (don’t know how because like you mentioned, there are not so much of nature writing) and sentiment to it.

The way you described the ending is exactly how I felt, too. The last 20% or so felt very rushed. He was just telling us everything happening without scenes or dialogue. So this makes total sense that the editors were rushing him. Maybe that last line was how he felt about being rushed. 😂

I have a question regarding heart Of A Dog - i notice that Bulgakov changes voices from chapter 1 to 2 chapters. Is this an error?is it a stylistic choice, is it the norm and why would an author employ such a technique? it seems like an odd technique to shift from 1st person to 3rd person omnipotent and in the 3rd chapter there is a shift between 3rd person and 1st person in the same chapter and along the same train of thought. is there a reason he employed this technique? for example it shifts in chapter 3 from 3rd person to "I am handsome. Perhaps I'm really a dog prince". would this be considered a surrealist technique for literature? Was there an overriding principle that made him use these multiple POV techniques ?

I recently read The Idiot (McDuff's English translation). The are many scenes that begin with more questions than answers! Understanding is revealed as you read. For example, I think the first 2 chapters should be read with a feeling of cynical humour for it to make sense. Do you get the same feeling reading in the original Russian?
