as someone who wishes to become a theatre scholar one day, greek drama is something i find fascinating and always have ever since i studied ancient greek at school. love this video series of yours and i had been waiting since the first vid for this second installment
a sophocles vlog in Japan, perfect! glad you're continuing with this series. i've only read the Theban plays but excited for these now. you should check out The Cure at Troy; it's a version of Philoctetes written by the poet Seamus Heaney and it's really good.
I haven’t watched your video yet, had to leave a comment first, but based on only reading The Three Theban Plays and The Oresteia, I much prefer Sophocles to Aeschylus (Oedipus the King was phenomenal). I haven’t yet read Euripides, but I’m guessing this video is going to motivate me to read more ancient Greek plays. Can’t wait to see what you think.
Now I really want to read more Sophocles. I'm curious to see if I will feel the same as you about Electra. I read the retelling Electra by Jennifer Saint this summer, and it's really hard to try and see things from her perspective, she's such an unlikable character. I loved The Iliad, so Ajax might be my next play, after I get my hands on this collection. Before then, I think I'll try Euripides. Great video!
@@labben1697 Thank you! Yes, I think I'm like you. I enjoy Sophocles more than Aeschylus. His plays are more character-oriented and that's why they're more emtional, I guess. At least for me. Aeschylus feels kind of cold and distant. Definitely read Ajax, for me, it was such an unexpected end to such a great hero. Let me know what you think of it once you read it :)
Hey I don't usually like to go onto other peoples channels and suggest my own videos, but oh well. One of my recent videos, Part Three of recommending Top 1,000 books, I rank Sophocles and also compare him to other Greek playwrights. I do it alphabetically, so it'll be towards the latter half of the video. 😋 Ok. Sorry for the shameless plug. Feel free to return the favor, direct my viewers to your channel/your video. I honestly don't like doing it, so 🙏🏽 know I won't make a habit of it.
Have you read Sophocles' tragedies? What do you think of his works? Do you have a favorite ancient Greek tragedy? 🏺
I've never read any of the ancient plays. Listening to you makes me think it can be a new and interesting thing to try. Thanks for the inspiration!

So happy to see you brought this series back! Watching your videos definitely makes me want to read all of these plays for myself!
Give it try :) I hope you'll enjoy them as much as I did!
I have always shied away from reading ancient plays, but after watching you and your obvious enthusiasm I am tempted to try one. Thank you.
Thank you very much for your support 💐 I hope you give the plays a try :) Let me know what you think of them once you read them :)
Kudos.
Really enjoy hearing you talk about books/plays! :) Thank you!
