    I love the contrast of Leskov writing "fancy" and in ana academic style but about regular people, versus Tolstoy writing in a simple style but about the aristocracy!

    I have been interested in 19 and 20th century Russian culture since Reading the nonfiction book "State within a State" Also I have enjoyed reading Dostoevsky. The Idiot and the Brother's Karimosov were my favorite. I first got interested with Crime and Punishment. Your description and summary of the authors of these books are just been incredible and inspiring for anybody to read these or at least for me thank you very much. I read Anna Karenina too and loved the descriptions of settings and scenes there.

    Wonderful, wonderful Video….thanks so much. Been keen on Russian writing for many years and now you mention new writers I’ve never heard of! How exciting!! Always enjoyed the well known onesbut OBLOMOV has always had special place in my heart. It is so funny and perplexing as well as enjoyable. Read it first 50 years and have always kept a copy on my shelves. Thank you so much for all you put in to your videos. I love that you mention the size and spacing of the font in your book reviews…so helpful!! Enjoying the translations by Alma classics. Their Anna Karenina is great!!👍

    I enjoyed this very impressive book haul. After you fit all of these onto your bookshelves, it would be interesting to see another bookshelf tour.
    One of your new books is in my collection (translated to English in an Oxford World Classics edition): Anton Chekhov’s The Steppe And Other Stories. My favorite of these stories is an atypical one called “The Bet”.

    I cannot believe all of the things Dmitry Likhachov experienced! Imagine getting out of prison just to experience that siege. That edition of the Master and Margherita is beautiful! I have always been so intimidated by that one. You have added so many things to my TBR! I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on all of these! 🌸 Edit: I have to order a copy of Leskov after your description of his writing style!

    • @bookishtopics
      @bookishtopics  3 года назад +1

      I know. But the 20th century in Russia was very tremulous many people, including writers, had hard lives. The Siege of Leningrad was really scary though. There was no food and people had to eat dirt, a daily portion of bread was the size of a box of matches, and that brad was very poor quality too a lot of terrifying things like that. I have no idea how people survived this. He must have been a very strong person. We also call him "the conscience of our nation" because of his strong morals.
      I very curious about Leskov myself. We could buddy read him after A Place of Greater Safety if you'd like to. :)

      I am a new subscriber and love your choice of Russian literature and your lively presentation. Would it be possible, please, for you to list the titles of the books so that we can refer back to them quickly? That would be great and very helpful. Are there also any translations you particularly prefer of Russian classics in terms of a respectful rendition of the writing style as well as the plot's inner tensions? Am very much looking forward to your next batch of novels/plays/poems/non-fiction! Thank you so much. All the best from the UK and take care, Anabel

    I have to read all my Russian literature in translation. My Russian is quite basic and not fluent enough to read in the original language. Could you talk about the best translations for these works. I would love your opinion since you also read and understand in the original language. This would be helpful to understand whose translations are most reflective of the original intent of the author. Thank you in advance.

    много русской классики 📚 Bunin won the Noble Prize for literature in 1933 (he was exiled in France at the time). Other Russian winners of the Nobel Prize for Literature were Boris Pasternak (1958), Mikhail Sholokov (1965), Alexander Solzhenitsyn (1970) and Joseph Brodsky (1987).

      Informative list of Russians who won Nobel Prizes for literature. Just for your information, however, you need to use genitive plural, not genitive singular, after много so it should be много русских классик just as you might state with equal conviction много красивых девушек в странах бывшего Советского Союза))
