Hey btw if you have yet to read any Mishima I highly suggest him. Confessions of a mask and Temple of the Golden pavilion are quite good as well. There are many others too!
@@ericgrabowski3896 Yes, Mishima is on my list for sure.I only read The Sound of Waves by him which I absolutely loved :) Thank you for all the recommendations! :)
Just imagine in this time of technology and cell phones that people communicate through poetry. The communication language of messages today, particularly in English makes that more than not likely. And if it’s the same in Japan as it is in many countries where everyone is seen with their eyes glued to the phone makes me wonder if anyone even reads books. I think you are amazing. You look very young and you are so widely read. I hope you go on posting your reading experiences because your videos are extremely interesting (and in times of reading slumps encouraging).
Thank you very much for your kind and encouraging message! 🌞 I also think that unfortunately, it's probably an old tradition, but you never know :) maybe some people in some remote corners of the country still keep it. It would be so great! 🌿🌞
Of all the Booktubers I watch, I honestly don't know anyone else who reviews books as well as you do. You make me want to read EVERY SINGLE BOOK you review! Thank you so much for imparting your knowledge and being so enthusiastic about books in general. It's a joy to watch your videos. ❤
Thank you so much for this history lesson! I've always wondered how the Asian languages relate and were developed. It's so rewarding to do deep-dives into associated history before reading. On another note, I already owned a paper copy, an e-copy and an audio copy of Wuthering Heights, but your review (even though it was mixed) made me buy the illustrated version. Waiting for a free (and not so blazingly hot) day to read it outside.
I've just started reading books on Japanese culture and mythology, but I think I am going to order those two diaries! They sound so interesting for a glimpse into everyday life of Japanese aristocracy! lol I am waiting for the heat to subside too! 98F today. Ugh!! I will spend the day being still and reading!!
I really really hope you enjoy these diaries! There's one more which is The Pillow Book by Sei Shonagon. That one is the earlier one and also the longest about 400 pages, as far as I remember, in case you wanted something more extensive. Heat is the hardest to manage! I stay all the time indoors too. Luckily yesterday we had a break from the heat with all-day long rain! That was glorious 😍 I hope you enjoy the diaries! I absolutely loved them both!
Quick comment before watching your video - when I saw the title I got very excited as it's such a perfect timing for this video! I've just finished The Makioka Sisters which I wanted to read since you've put up the video about it. And now new Japanese classics video! 🥳
@@bookishtopics I really liked it. Like you said, it was slow but not boring. I liked it because it was like looking into the time capsule of that period in Japan and also I like how we could observe these women and their families. Again, I must agree with you - they all were not bad but also not precisely good humans. Each of them annoyed me with their behaviour and their selfishness. Sachiko was most likeable but perhaps because she was most bland. She lead a good, comfortable life and her selfishness was usually in thegood name of the family. I liked how the author showed little details of Japanese culture in every day life. The last line was totally unnecessary 😂. To me, it looks like he was rushed and then said "f- this" and he stoped writing not bothering about the proper ending. I wonder why editors didn't cross this line and just stoped at Sachiko's little poem. Anyway, I really liked it and I'm proud of myself for reading almost 600 pages in English, which is not my first language :). Unfortunately the book is not translated into my language. Thank you for recommending it, after your newest video I want to read As I Crossed a Bridge of Dreams, seems really interesting :).
@@CMri I feel like you could be right about what he was thinking when he was writing the ending. :D I hope you enjoy As I Crossed a Bridge of Dreams! This diary feels like a meditation. It was so calming and soothing to me to read. I really hope you like it :)
Love the vlog. I have not read much Japanese classics so I will definitely give these 2 books a go. I also loved you placing these books within their historical context. And yes like you I hate hot weather!
I love youu I just found your channel and you're so cute and authentic in an authentic way if that makes sense lol. I just mean sometimes people try too hard to seem authentic and it's obvious when it's manufactured. Your takes on the books you read are so simple but not superficial. I'm bingeing your videos right now. I love how long they are I can just play it in the background while I'm working.
Loved this vlog. Thanks for all the historical background info. I agree that it's always useful to know at least the basics to appreciate books better. I'm going to get myself a copy of the first book
I read The Diary of Lady Murasaki after you recommended it last year and enjoyed it! Now As I Crossed a Bridge of Dreams will be the next book I buy. Always thanks for fun book recommendations!
Thanks for the great video! In modern Japan, we don't have the custom of sending poems to each other to communicate at all. People who make it a hobby to compose poems might do it. When I was in elementary school or junior high school, I remember making Senryu or Haiku for a class at school. I'm very interested in "As I Crossed a Bridge of Dreams" so I will read it soon. It's very valuable and interesting to learn about the lives of people from very different backgrounds. It is not a novel, but the next animated film by Sunao Katabuchi, the director of "In This Corner of the World," seems to be a story about the life of Sei Shonagon. (Release date TBD.) Can't wait for that to be released!
Ohhh I'd love to see an animated film about that time period I'll be looking forward to its release too! Thank you for letting me know! In the meanwhile I'll watch In This Corner of the World as I haven't heard of that movie either.
Palestinian were using poem and singing during British Mandate "occupation " My grandmother use it to communicate with grandfather when he was in prison.. unfortunately no one wrote those poems 🥲 my aunty may know them but she is not well.
Yes, I know of that one. I still don't own a copy but I'll get it along with the Gossamer Years. These will be my next 2 diaries to read 🤓 Thank you for the recommendation!
Do you have a favorite Japanese classic? 📚
Snow Country by Yasunari Kawabata ♥️
@@daminisingh3823 Absolutely! I love that book too! :)
So far its probably the Runaway Horses part of the Sea of fertility tetralogy by Yukio Mishima. Thanks for the great content.

I love Japanese classics. As to my favorite, i'd suggest anything by Junichiro Tanizaki and Natsume Soseki.
Thank you for the recommendations! Yes, these authors are definitely on my list. I read The Makioka Sisters last year and loved it!
Ohhh adding As I Crossed a Bridge of Dreams in my wishlist now!! Thank you for all the insightful feedback.
I hope you enjoy it! :)
Thank you for sharing these older Japanese classics and providing background info! Very interesting and educational 😊
I really enjoyed reading I Am A Cat. It was very different to my usual reads but very insightful
