Walking Two Months After Broken Femur Bone
It has been two months since I broke my femur bone. The physical therapy place totally ripped me off. They said they would give me a walker to take home with me. I've seen Star Wars, so I expected a giant mechanical dog with a laser in his nose. All I got was an old-guy crutch.
I can walk with a cane now and have a fairly normal gate. I can walk without the cane but have a limp. I was told that it is almost impossible to un-learn a limp, so I use the cane most of the time until I can walk normally without it.
It took two months of physical therapy to be able to walk this way.

I broke my femur bone about a month and a half ago. I was in hospital with lots of morphine for a couple of weeks, then sent to a rehabilitation center. Its sort of a penitentiary for old guys who have committed the crime of having fallen and they can't get up. My home was raided. They broke down my front door and carried me out of there, kicking and screaming. They gave me fentanyl, then somet...
How did I break my femur bone?

I wore flipflop shoes and had a cluttered house. I tripped over clutter and fell against the coffee table. My life was saved because my phone happened to be where I fell. I normally didn't keep the phone in my pocket. I intend to get a life-alert pendant when I go home. Its that "I've fallen and can't get up" thing. Those can save lives. There was no way I could move after the break. When I tri...

I broke my femur bone. I had emergency surgery and was in Hospital for a week. I am now in a live-in rehab. I can lift the foot just an inch and can use a walker to go about ten feet. I get physical therapy twice a day. I can do a little more every day but its like being a baby. Hopefully I can go to my parents house in about a month. It will be July or August before the bone is healed. This su...
Crazy Boat Owner Removes Shade Frame Just Before Summer!
Просмотров 2992 месяца назад
I had been bothering Marshall to move the shade frame from the catamaran because the solar panel rack will be moved to the cat from the Carver. Its crazy because that frame held a tarp that put the boat in the shade all summer when it was so hot you couldn't stand being in there. On this day there were enough workers in the yard for us to round up enough guys to just pick it up in one piece and...
The Other Catamaran

Jeff from Xcel Marine gives a lesson on catamaran structural bulkheads. This tour was very helpful in terms of knowing where bulkheads need to be and which of the original Iroquois internal walls need to go back in. There should be bulkheads where the front and rear walls of the main cabin are. This turns the cabin into a giant box-beam that holds the pontoons rigidly parallel. None of the othe...
I Made My Dock Three Times Bigger
Просмотров 9343 месяца назад
I did a lot of work on the dock a while back. The original dock was destroyed, so the 9to5less crew rebuilt the wood frame that the deck rests on. I just laid some boards over that and nailed them down. The lower dock was just a 12 by 12 square with a 4 foot wide walkway out to it. The new dock adds a 12 by 24 section from the yard out to the 12 by 12 square, and along the boat slip part of the...
Highly Specialized Truck Moves Giant Sailboat
Просмотров 2,1 тыс.3 месяца назад
Doug bought this truck for moving giant boats. He welded the trailer himself, which is impressive because they moved a 65,000 pound boat with it. The truck can only go 35 miles per hour. It has an automatic transmission, power steering and power brakes. The hitch can be raised and lowered a lot to get the trailer over rough ground. There is even a convenient rear door so the driver can see and ...
Fiberglass Reinforcement And leak Prevention Catamaran Roof Starboard Side
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.3 месяца назад
The cabin roof of the catamaran is a dome made of urethane foam with fiberglass on both the inside and outside. Separating the layers of fiberglass with a relatively incompressible core greatly strengthens the structure. I spent a lot of time sanding through whatever was up there and cleaning before applying a couple of thin layers of glass and then some gelcoat. This should prevent any leaks w...
I Saw The Skegs Off The Catamaran !
Просмотров 5544 месяца назад
Everyone who drove the catamaran using an outboard motor complained that it wouldn't turn for crap. Its no wonder. There are these skegs at the back of each pontoon. They act like rudders steering the boat straight ahead and you have to fight that every time you want to turn. Turning with the outboard involves shoving the stern sideways with the vectored thrust, and that means shoving those ske...

I use a ground up rubber product called "soft Sand" which creates a pretty aggressive nonskid surface. You roll on some gelcoat, then sprinkle the sand all over. I push down hard on the roller to squeeze the gelcoat t...

This is good news. We both like doing stuff. I am in the Philippines at the moment, engaged in a huge task of building a house. I am finding it difficult with the heat and being 70 now. I think we need to work more smartly. In future I am switching to lighter construction. American 2 by 4 is the way to go. I am going to start usung banana waste fibre as a replacement for fiberglass when I get back to Portugal. You said you did not put wax in your resin until the final coat. With a large job say a whole boat or a roof and only one man doing all the laying up, how long can i leave that last coat before kicking it.

I probably can walk around on a boat now, but climbing on the catamaran was always dangerous with no stairs and no safety railings. My surgeon was honest when I pressed him on my prognosis. He said most people with an injury like mine (broken femur) never recover 100%. The harder you work at therapy, the more use of the leg you will recover. This is really important if you need to keep your footing on a boat that is pitching around in big waves. I hope you recover enough to use the boat at least as much as before.

Exercise to build quadricep strength and body build to keep all parts of the body strong and elastic 3. Work to improve your flexibility to loosen up and resist getting stiffer that you have allowed your body to become 4. Never give up! You were born for the seas and adventure!!!!!!!!!!! Cheers!

I didn't know how you built that boat dock in those flip flops. I'd have been in the water. So you keep up the accelerated physical therapy, and find some sensible shoes. And get well enough to walk out of there. We'll be here, when you're ready.

Thanks! The flip flops are good sand shoes, but I got some sketchers which let me shove my feet into them without tying laces. They stay on real good until I force them off.
