    Ah dang, sorry you hated it lol. I love Dance a ton. It along with Feast are my 2 favorites. Also I feel confident that Jon Snow is not going to get revived like he did on the show. The opening prologue chapter about the dying warg I think is a direct foreshadow for Jon’s fate. I think Jon is dead, but he’s going to warg his consciousness into his direwolf. His direwolfs name is even Ghost. It’s like all right there lol. I’d be shocked if this isn’t the route GRRM goes.

    Feast for crows and Dance with dragons have become my favorite of the series and I like them more with each re-read. They are incredibly rich and dense with lore and world building and Intresting characters. The Boiled Leather combined reading order for 4/5 is awesome to read, but it’s recommended to do it on a re-read. That combined reading order really helped the story fall into place and see this sprawling story u fold chronologically. I also don’t like it when people say that GOT was good until they ran out of source material, because they had 2 full books of source material and decided to barely adapt them at all.

    So glad you enjoyed this one! I myself had some criticism about first two books in the series, (still loved them, especially the ending of Deadhouse Gates) but it was book 3 that got me absolutely hooked and now I’m totally sucked in. Good luck with book two, hope you like it. Love your vids by the way. Have a good one

    PLEASE DO NOT READ IF YOU DO NOT WANT SPOILERS. :) I just finished this book and honestly I had to force myself to finish it. I chose this book knowing it was going to be very dark, depressing and make me an emotional wreck. I read A LOT of books and I can say that this has been my very least favorite book ever and wish I can take all the time wasted on it back. The characters were soooo unrealistic. They kept bringing up friends of Jude that I did not remember nor care for at all. The substantial amount of rape and abuse was elaborated on a little TOO much. When they should've focussed on maybe who Jude's biological parents were? They also briefly talked about Anna, Jude's social worker when I feel they could've talked more about her and the supposably great relationship that they had. I apologize for the spoiler but halfway through the book I pretty much knew everyone was going to die. Of course, everyone dies at a young age. Literally, EVERYONE except the person you are meant to dislike from the start.. JB. I was flabbergasted by how high the reviews were on this book. I chose this book because Instagram and other platforms talked so highly of it. It is very sad yes... but I don't believe it was well written at all. The reference of first person from Jude to Harold confused the crap out of me. Maybe I'm illiterate sure but I just never disliked a book so bad. My OCD will not leave books unfinished. Jude was loved so much and he did face a lot of challenges and self hatred but he started to abuse the people he loved. Ugh.. anyways.. just my thought :) if anyone wants a good tear jerker, Read Book Thief by Markus Zusak. Amazing read. Apparently Hanya Yanagihara wrote People in the Trees and that is ALSO about pedophilia. I'm sorry but I just cant..

    It's difficult to ignore these "supermarket" authors. They are all over youtube and social media, when you're searching for book content they are there, more than the classics that have stood the test of time. So it's hard not to hate them for "polluting" everything with their fast food novels.

    I think the answer in my mind is definitively “no”. There are so many glaring issues that you and others have highlighted while the positives are really just due to the fact that it exists in a world we love. Fans cut Sanderson a lot of slack when it comes to cringe YA dialogue and corny moments but this book may be a step too far for lots of us. I think the real question to ask ourselves is would we like this if Sanderson didn’t write it? I think for many the answer would be a resounding no. It is deeply, deeply flawed and it’s only saving grace is that Brandon Sanderson is on the cover and it follows characters we care about in a world we’ve spent a lot of time in.

    This review makes me happy that I decided to end my Cosmere journey after Words Of Radiance haha. Books are special to me in many ways, one of the ways being that I have a much harder time forgiving a disappointing book than a disappointing movie or album. The reason being is that movies and albums are generally between 1-3 hours long, I can finish them in an afternoon and still have pretty much my entire day left over so it doesn't hurt so bad when I wasn't blown away by them. Books on the other hand are totally different for me. Going into a book, I generally expect to spend 3 weeks to a month reading it. That means that if that book didn't deliver, I've just wasted basically a month of my life (a month of my favorite hobby, mind you) on something dumb. THAT drives me insane, and it's caused me to become more liberal with my DNFs as well as much more selective with what I decide to read in general. Series like Stormlight Archive where I'd be investing almost half a year of my reading life on just to have it disappoint me in the end? That to me is almost unforgivable and it would be a TOUGH sell to get me to read that author again honestly.

    • @jaredghramm
      @jaredghramm 9 дней назад

      ^^Not saying that every single thing I read has to be some kind of monumental genre defining masterpiece or anything, I like an easy breezy read as much as the next guy. To me, it's all about the expectations the author has set for me going into it and whether or not they're able to fulfill those expectations within their own story, which I think should be the bare minimum that an author should achieve regardless of the kind of story they are telling.

    • @toastytowns
      @toastytowns 9 дней назад

      I 100% have that same frustration with books. For this one though, I wouldn’t say I’m disappointed just not nearly as good as I hoped it would be. If I continue Stormlight (and I think I will), I will just be going in with MUCH lower expectations!

They knew that the spren of the Oathgate was being corrupted and will turn against them. Kill the corrupted spren of the oathgate of Azimir and that battle is won, a whole singer army is out of action and Adolin and his troops could have been deployed elsewhere.

Should this have been a novella? Maybe, but if so it would have to be awkwardly out of place outside of this time period of Roshar outside the book. Ok I haven’t read WaT yet but I did watch most of your review (when you mentioned Adolin and Kaladin in particular I skipped those parts). I too enjoyed Rhythm of War, my least favorite of the four that I’ve read being Oathbringer. It sounds like there are more people expressing disappointment with WaT than any other SA books. Some of what I’m seeing is that the quippy dialogue is getting extra annoying in particular in this book - like Sanderson is trying to make SA world into Marvel. Others complain that SA now is more YA. And I can see that. I think the darkest book is my favorite of SA and that’s the Way of Kings. I still remember the poor slave in the beginning that was pulled out of the caravan for coughing too much - and the slavers bashed his head and killed him while he was drinking tea. That is a kind of bleak darkness that I did not see happen in the latter books. Yes there is war and killing - but not this sort of coldness and cruelty. Not that I like violence, what I’m saying is that that scene, as well as all of the people dying around Kaladin in the first book, made the situations in the first book dire with high stakes. Will Kaladin get out of his miserable and deadly situation? That suspense was what made the first book so special to me. Okay, I’ll get to WaT someday. I have to get through One Piece Egghead Island arc and Elbaf arc first.

      @harveyweir8061 i would be ok with the length if I felt like show vs tell balance was a bit more. So no contradiction. For physical book that we got, I felt like those 300 pages could have been trimmed but if they were filled more with exploration of the character through other means other than the characters self identity of personal feelings/emotions/conditions I would be ok with it being 600 pages longer or more! I love these characters and would have zero problem with sitting with them longer. I hope that explains my perspective a bit better in good faith. My opinion is my own

    Unfettered Owen! I had some minor gripes (mostly on the prose level), but overall I think the book was really great and the character arcs worked for me. I think opinion on this book will improve on reread. There is a fine line Brandon has to walk with the Cosmere stuff. I don’t think there was a lot this time and I don’t think it was distracting. It feels to me like you’re thinking there’s hints at stuff that isn’t actually in other books. This is a difficult conversation to have in depth though. Adolin’s arc really worked for a lot of people in part because it was very grounded and reminiscent of Kaladin’s bridgecrew arc from WoK. He really had that dogged single-mindedness and the doing whatever it takes kind of situation going on.

    • @toastytowns
      @toastytowns 17 дней назад

      Yeah its not so much that I feel like I missed stuff that happened in other cosmere books, but more so I felt this book had a lot of “this character will be a worldhopper” scenes or “this person will team up with this worldhopper” and that stuff may all happen in the mainline Stormlight books, but I just prefer Roshar dealing with Roshar stuff if that makes sense. The series as a whole is definitely gearing up to interplanetary war though which I’m not sure im as interested in

    • @Wordhopper1990
      @Wordhopper1990 17 дней назад

      @ Right. I also prefer the separate series to stick to their own worlds and honestly, I do expect Stormlight 6-10 to still do that (except we’ll see more of Ashyn and Braize, but they’re in the same system). I could be wrong there. This book changed so much about how the world works, I don’t know what to expect anymore going forward. There’s one final Sigzil scene with 12124 that indeed sets up their worldhopper future. And the Iriali in a similar vein are all getting out of dodge. And I guess a bunch of Horneaters now that Cultivation’s perpendicularity is gone. And Odium intends for the Blackthorn to go out and fight for him. But otherwise? Shallan was warned not to leave Roshar because of the time dilation. Were there other characters that you felt were set up to become worldhoppers? (Brandon is planning large-scale interplanetary stuff, but only in Mistborn Era 5. Other than that, he’s always said he wants series to stand on their own.)

      @@toastytowns I forgot, have you read the novella Dawnshard? (If not, that probably clears up a lot.) The Dawnshard is a relevant Cosmere thing, but I don’t think she’s going worldhopping anytime soon. I think Lift will stay, too. She’s one of the most powerful people on Roshar, with her Lifelight metabolism. She might be the Kaladin of the second arc. Vasher is being set up for something big, but I think it’ll be on Roshar. In any case, neither of them can leave the tower for now, and Vasher should want to stay close to where the Towerlight is, or he might start consuming his Breaths. Which would be fine, but it’s a finite resource.

    Ive seen this sentiment sooo many times... the whole "you wont know what happening for most of the book". Im reading Gardens of the Moon for the first time, and sure there are some mysteries but the general thrust of the story just isnt that opaque or impenetrable . Im at about the halfway mark and Id summarize in broad strokes as follows: there is an imperialist empire (malazan) where some shady shit went down in the recent past. The firet sword, the chief advisor, other higherups, and most importantly emperor Kellanved were all killed during a power grab by the at that time head of the claws Laseen. There is still some narrative mystery around this and events in the seven cities at the time seem to maybe be important, but ultimately whatever secret shady shit that went down pissed of some powerful peopler (ammanas and cotillion) and the House of the Shadow emerged seeking vengence. These guys have a plan that involves a fishers daughter (Sorry). The backdrop to all this is an in progress colonial invasion of Genabackis where Sorry has infiltrated a Malazan unit (bridgeburners) in her progress to bring vengeance upon empress laseen. As far as the magic lore, there is still a lot to parse out as would be expected there but clearly the magic is related to these Warrens that seem to be God related realms structured roughly in a way that echoes real world Tarot. mages/wizards/sorcerers/etc are able top open these warrens of various nature and form and harness the energy in various ways. And some races are clearly much older and ancient (e.g. Tiste Andii) and seem more adept in these mystical regards. there a lot more details but that seems to be the broad strokes so far.

    War and Peace is amazing and makes a strong case to back up Ursula K. Le Guin’s claim that it’s the greatest of all novels. That being said, some people just don’t gel with Tolstoy and I respect that. However, translation is a big factor-do you know which translation you attempted? Last year was extremely fallow for me-I burned out finishing my PhD, moving states, and suffered some personal losses. That being said, my top five were all exceptional and I’ll stand by them :)

    I love a good bromance, might give this a go. Also just finished the Count, loved it apart from some pacing issues too. At least this one is shorter despite having some pacing issues too lol.

    I always recommend people to read The Three Musketeers before they read Monte Cristo because you cant help yourself from comparing the two books after.

    My advice is that, yes, you must read Urth of the New Sun and you must reread the series as a whole...but maybe not now. Urth is a wholly different book, different feel, but worthwhile as it continues Severian's story to a conclusion. In any case, yes, both are worth your effort but give the original series room to settle first. interesting fact - the first four books were written together then separated into four pieces. the other book, thematically and practically, came later, offering Wolfe himself time for reflection. In the end, these books have sat well with me for decades and after many re-readings. I hope they can for you too.

    One day I will read Dumas. Promise. Thanks for the review. :) I think in Europe we just got new movies for Three Musketeers as well last year.
