I’m currently reading this and I am loving it so far. I think the extra-textual details are actually there to add to the idea that it’s exploring of what we know, how we know it, and who controls what we know by extending that to the reader, what do we know over and above the characters we’re reading about. In terms of its tone, it feels to me like if you took Terry pratchet world-building and crazy concepts but made it more Charles dickens but making it dark rather than funny, I’m intrigued to see how I feel at the end though!
I’m glad you enjoyed it, not surprised you didn’t love it. It’s a very specific flavour of fantasy which is personally why I love it. The gothic tones and post-fallout vibe was something that really resonated with me as a reader. It really was better than the sum of its parts. As for the sequel, I didn’t mind it. I’d bet money you’ll hate it so I don’t recommend reading it. BUT it retroactively recontextualises a lot of book 1. You get more history, new perspectives and hints of a looming threat OR a threat long past. We don’t know yet. The final book in the trilogy comes out beginning of 2025. Sidenote: the ending to book 2 is quite satisfying. I shall go back to the drawing board and return with a recommendation worth staking my reputation on.
Love this slightly unhinged review, I never knew if this book would be my vibe and I have a way better idea of what it's actually about now. Can't say it's jumping to the top of my priority list, but it sure sounds like a great refreshing read.
I love a weird book, but Mordew was a little much for me haha it definitely felt like the author was trying to say something and make a point but I could never quite figure out what
I’ve had this on my tbr since it came out, I’m so happy to see you’re covering it. Watching now!

I’ll hate the sequel you say? Perhaps I will have to read it then…

The name of this book makes me think of the killer bear from the Pixar movie “Brave”.
Also do I get extra credit for commenting before Jimmy Nutts?? 🥜
