I like the tone switch of the idealist novice kids playing at war and dreaming of its glory and honor. Only to be confronted with it and realize war is hell on earth. I like how the reality slaps that out of all the kids.
I can see that! I think the whole new group of characters with magic powers prevented it from feeling that grounded though. If we stuck closer to the school group, I think it would have worked better for me
I have read this books but a lot of what you talk about I don't even remember. This also wasn't a favorite series for me. I did love the relationship of Rin and Nezhar. I also was very confused how the atomic bombs were used in this book.

Yup. I had the same issues with this series, however I see why people like it. Just not for me
I heard zero mention of poppy flowers duking it out. 0/10 false advertising.
